The Next Cardinal Manager
After watching the Cards get beat down in person last weekend in DC (and after the Tony LaRussa debacle at the Glenn Beck love-in), I had a funny feeling that I was finally watching the beginning of the end of the Tony LaRussa era. Maybe it was the overpriced beer or the extreme heat, but I experienced... a vision. A vision of the next Cardinal manager. And he was Tony Pena.
That's right, Tony Pena. Any why not? He was my idol while catching for the mid-to-lat 80's Cardinals teams. A very smart catcher and great personality. Won AL manager of the year several years back with the Royals and is currently a coach with the Yankees.
Other upsides: he's Dominican, which should appeal to Pujols. He's a minority, which would appeal to the commisioner (not like I really would care). Furthermore, he was Whitey Herzog's unoffical on-field leader during the 80's heyday. The Anti-Larussa. The answer to our prayers.

I like it!
And he and Dunc should hit it off just fine as former catchers.
I'd like to see some research
like what has Tony Pena been up to? cmon, there’s an entire internet for you to look on. does he have any managerial experience? is he at all interested? this could be so much more of a fanpost. you could also look at other candidates. I’m pretty bored with reading 4 minute fanposts, spend 4 hours instead.

Managed the Royals from '02 - '05
Apparently, he was AL Manager of the Year in ‘03, so something had to go right for him that year. Royals went 83-79, so it’s hard to say exactly what, aside from the obvious of just getting the Royals over .500.
Currently, bench coach for the Yankees. Was their first base coach from ’06 to ’08.
thank you.

what is a Glenn beck Debacle?
I didn’t get on base. One time I did (Wednesday) and we scored a run. That shows if I get on base, things can happen - Oilspill

wht was the Tony LaRussa Debacle at the Glenn Beck love-in
what did Tony do to make it a debacle. I’ve been on vacation for the last week.
Also, Did Pujols not decabilate this either? Should we also be looking for new first baseman?

some folks view it as a debacle

any mixture of sports and politics is ill advised
some people just aren’t comfortable seeing their field general supporting a shock-jock who would sooner root for civil war than a reversion to pre-bush taxation on the small demographic that holds 50% of the nation’s wealth.
at the end of the day, it’s really just a popularity thing and not really indicative of the horrible decisions larussa actually makes on the field (or IS IT??).

nope
ditto for albert in my mind. personally, the attachment i once had to the guy is waning quickly. < cry > because i love my team so much…
ok, i’ll stop.

the saddest part is that the Cardinals have had a lot of players involved in civil right movements
now we get to have association with Glenn Beck. my friend told me his soul hurts once he found out that Pujols went. I find trouble wearing my Pujols shershey now. sad.

that's the way I see it too.
when it was announce that Tony and Albert would be attending I thought it was a bad idea. I’m not exactly sure why and it may not be fair but it doesn’t seem wise. It’s kind of like tipping your hand.
I thought I heard that someone in the front office had warned Albert against it. It was a short blurb.
Personally, I wouldn’t have done it. All it can do is stir up controversy.
Politics is too volatile these days.

yeah, good idea tony and albert
as two prominent members of a team, go to a polarizing figures “rally” and thus association your team with said polarizing figure. that’s not going to cause any rifts with the fans or other players. great idea, TLR!

did you see me stating that I don't even feel like wearing my Pujols shershey anymore?
Tony has seniority here. so he gets blame for the idea. he could have said, maybe this isn’t such a good idea here, Albert. if it was Albert’s idea. sheesh

Didn't Tony say it was his idea?
Tony said: “I wouldn’t even have taken this to Albert if I thought it was going to be political.” Pujols still has to take responsibility for going along with it though.
Tony is truly out of touch with reality if he thought it wasn't political
but he’s probably just lying some more

To me
it says a lot that Pujols would go. He cares about his (adopted) country. I have more respect in Albert today.
Politics will always be volatile, you don’t have to agree… but at least he cares.
he went
even though we know he has a different stance than Glenn on immigration reform.
Anyway, what were they there for? They were invited correct?
I didn’t get on base. One time I did (Wednesday) and we scored a run. That shows if I get on base, things can happen - Oilspill
My take on Albert going
was that he was manipulated by TLR into going through with it. “Yeah Albert, it’ll be great! You can talk about how great the country has been to you. It’s going to be a group of born-agains. You can talk about your charity…”
No matter your political leaning, I can’t see what the team had to gain by them attending. Like TLR is any authority on political matters – talk about having no moral compass. He basically abandoned his kids, was probably the biggest enabler of the steroid era. No wonder he’s always dependent on the numbers, since he has no gut to get a feeling from. What a douchebag.
This is inappropriate
Pujols didn’t go and talk about politics. He got up, accepted an award, and then talked about his Foundation and his faith. I can’t see how anyone can fault him for what he said.
Any dicussion of the political nature of the event is out of bounds on this board. Let’s follow Albert’s lead. He didn’t talk about politics, so we shouldn’t bother discussing it.

I like it as well as the Jose Oquendo idea.
You don’t need to spend 4 hours on this fanpost, you probably have another life.
I’m interested in what he’s been up to even though you already said he’s is currently a coach with the Yankees and said he has managerial experience with the Royals.
I think I’ll spend a little of my time and go look up what else I want to know.

Lighten up, fellas!
What can I say, I’m brand new to this blog, and am not completely aware of all the protocol. There’s nothing I would like more than to spend all day writing about Cardinal baseball. Unfortunately, I do have other responsibilities that take priority over doing so.
I did want to throw the idea out there, as I think Tony Pena would be a great fit for the organization. If not for his skills alone, it would be great to have someone who could bridge the gap between the current state of Cardinals baseball and the not-too-distant past that made the organization great.
I agree with your idea
I didn’t mean to single you out, but I’ve been doing this to anyone who writes short fanposts in the hope of stemming the tide short fanposts. but I give up, I’m done trying to stop the short fanposts, since I’m not really an arrogant person and I don’t want to give that impression. the interwebs can distort things.
anyways, if Tony Pena were to be the new manager I would be nothing less than thrilled for the Cardinals.

and I'm not trying to be a dick about this or a stickler for the rules
I want people to be more creative, interesting, thought provoking, and not just write something that takes 2-5 minutes, you can write something like that in a discussion thread, a fanshot chat, etc. there are places for it. the fanposts are for well researched, quality material. or more thought out at least, this quite obviously didn’t have much work put into it. so go ahead, demean people who put a lot of time and effort into writing. because they should have “another life”.
not trying to disrespect the person who wrote this, or tony pena as manager, or anything like that. just realize what you just said, and that you just disrespected every person who spent a lot of time writing for this site.

You're right
We should just allow anyone with a drunken crazy thought at 2 AM to post 4 sentence FanPosts about who our next manager should be.
Do you have any idea how many of these posts we would have if it weren’t for people pointing out what the FanPost guidelines are? This kind of post belongs on the stltoday boards — there’s no analysis, just one person’s convoluted opinion. We strive to be better than that at VEB. If you feel differently, then I suggest that you move along. The website will survive without you.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
I'm glad we agree.
Right now there’s a fan post on the front page from 12 days ago so we’re hardly being inundated with them. This was an interesting suggestion. It’s not one that has been made anywhere else.
Everyone is in an ugly mood because of the way our team is playing (me included), but that’s no excuse to scream at people every time we disagree with them. I’m as guilty as anyone of posting while in an extremely bad (baseball induced) mood. The last 10 days suck (with the exception of Jaime, peace be upon him). That’s no excuse for screaming at people.
Who's screaming?
Chitown simply asked that more analysis be provided instead of an off-the-cuff idea that just came off the top of the OP’s head. Anyone here can make a 3 sentence FanPost about a move the club should make, but just because they CAN doesn’t mean they SHOULD.
We have guidelines. We expect participants to follow the guidelines. If you have a problem with the guidelines, then we would prefer you find another outlet (like the stltoday.com boards). That’s it — no argument about it actually. It’s plain and simple.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
Well I just had a burr put under may saddle lately
and I felt like the guy needed a little support.
I didn’t demean those who put more time into their writing, just defend those who don’t.
There aren’t any set rules about how much material or research should go into a fanpost.
If what you want to say only takes a paragraph or two, then so what?
A discussion can be generated with one sentence. Discussion, isn’t that the point?
I get bored with some things here too but they don’t break any rules.
I don’t see anything wrong with a casual fanpost, myself, but you just can’t please everybody.

I had forgotten about Tony Pena. He was a good manager and an excellent catcher.
I have been having the same feelingabout TLR – that this is it as the Card’s skipper. I follow the games on the Cards site gameday or the Post Dispatch. Just feel like the rest of the season is slipping away and there is nothing being done about it. Just my own feelings. Hope I am wrong.
Nice post, pm
I want it to be
Mike Matheny
with Orel H as pitching coach
Ken Oberkfell as bench coach
John Mabry as hitting coach
Jack Clark as overall s—t kicker
Matheny
Whenever he is ready (he has said in the past his kids are still too little to leave them all year) he should be given a shot somewhere on the farm. He was another great field general and is very well liked by players and fans. The catchers in the system speak highly of his spring coaching as well. Seems like he has the skills and make up, hope he gives it a shot some day soon.

I like the idea
of Terry Pendleton taking over. Pena would be a good choice too. If Jose Oquendo got the job I would be upset. I would like Duncan to stay another year. I would llike to see Ozzie coach third, and Matheny (if he could) would be great to have on the coaching staff as well.
plus when the players start being "little bitches"
the coaching staff can put them in their place by challenging them to a game and kicking their asses.

Dave LaPoint could make an excellent manager. He currently manages (Sid Ponson) for the Long Island Ducks. I would also venture to guess his managing style would resemble Whitey’s…but who really knows?

I just want someone who will shut up and let the best players play at this point.
and not play Stavinoha, Miles, McDougal, and the rest of the shitty players who made this team worse the second we started playing them.
Off the top of my head, in order of preference:
1. Pop Warner
2. Fredi Gonzalez (though I hear the Braves might be keen)
3. Chris Maloney
Basically, keen on an internal appointment (though I’m still not sure I subscribe to the Oquendo idea, I’m not 100% sure why people necessarily think he’d be any good, and I’d also like to see something of a change at the top whereas I think Jose could just be the closest appointment to the current status quo). That or Fredi, who I’ve always liked.
Still bitching to contact.
Tony Pena - Adulterer?
I would like to see Tony Pena squatting (one leg out) in the dugout as well. He did have some off the field issues though. Not sure if this is a consideration…

a team that currently employs an admitted steroid user as a hitting coach might be able to give an adulterer a chance.
