Game 120-whatever open thread: Let's get ready to Suppan!

St. Louis Cardinals at Houston Astros, Sep 1, 2010 2:05 PM EDT

Cardinals going for the series shutout.  Tony's done his part by starting Miles and batting him second, but we can't do this without a healthy does of dejection from VEB.  C'mon guys I know you can do it!

i bet there is a higher probability Yadi hits into a DP than

Any given runner gets thrown out trying to steal second. The guy on first should be attempting to steal or at least hit and run every single time with Yadi up and 1 or less outs.

by mick311 on Sep 1, 2010 2:32 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

earlier in the year someone posted Yadi stats

And he hit into the DP with a man on first almost 30 percent of the time. So yea I don’t see why we don’t try and steal every time, ESP with someone like Colby who has speed.

That's actually right

Yadi’s had 88 PA with a runner on first base and less than 2 outs, and he has 18 DP’s. That’s 20% DP rate. So you need at least an 80% success rate to do a steal.

Interestingly enough, Yadi’s OPS in double play situtations is .891.

but if you look at the career highs for innings pitched (rhodes for example)

he pitched in 66 games last year… he has appeared in 60 now with a month to play.

games are what I listed

IMO the number of appearances matter more than the innings when looking at relievers, especially LOOGY’s and closers.

Dusty has all three Masset/Cordero/Rhodes on pace to beat their career high in appearances and that is before the postseason.

Cardinals

there’s still a very strong core, with talented young players in the organization to surround them. Imagine Tyler Greene instead of Miles, Allen Craig instead of Winn, Matt Carpenter instead of Feliz, Brandon Dickson instead of Suppan, Salas instead of MacDougal … well, you get the point.

Shed the stupid panicky acquisitions, the deadweight anvil around the neck of this team, and a manager who sticks to conventional lineups rather than his pet theories …

I’ve read it here before, nobody takes an 80-win team and makes them a 90-win team, and nobody takes a 95-win team and makes them a 90-win team better than LaRussa.

Well ...

Memphis is a game behind Iowa in their division, with a four-game series in Des Moines this weekend.

Springfield is three games back in their division, so they’re still in their race.

So that’s why the team hasn’t promoted all the minor leaguers they can. Plus, as long as Miles, Winn, Stavinoha, MacDougal, Suppan and Felix remain on the roster, you know they’re going to get the playing time.

No guarantees

I just think they looked a little better as the year went along, and they have several legitimate candidates for a breakout season. Not all of them will progress, but you have to think a couple of them will. Plus the West was really stacked last year. Many years they may have snuck in with that type of record.

by Merry CRasmus on Sep 1, 2010 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

true. hope for a couple breakout years from rookies and sophomores,

and get the expected production from a few guys that underperformed last year, and we could see a middle playoff seed. I’ll take it.

WWL

Who are the guys commentating on ESPN?
Forgive my ignorance, i don’t get to see the cards much in the UK, only when the WWL have them as the live game.

Anyways, i’m sure i just heard one of them say that TLR totally wasn’t interested in Soup getting the win and was more interested in us winning the game.

WTF, i think that’s exactly what was on his mind, gotta get the grizzled vet through 5 to get him the win!

by NoWayMan! on Sep 1, 2010 3:56 PM EDT reply actions

can't get the ESPN feed here,

but I presume Tony will also say he’s more interested in a team win than a pitcher’s W. However, I’m sure his preference for any pitcher is to get at least 5 innings, if only for the bullpen’s sake.

They look worse than the Pirates right now. They are playing, literally, like the worst team in baseball at the moment. No hitting, no pitching, sloppy defense. It’s a trainwreck.

i dont know about that

If we resign albert there won’t be much money at all to spend on players but after this seasons collapse there will be pressure to add more pieces, which I would imagine will result in just some other crappy, cheap veteran players instead.

Also, we should have won 70 games 2 weeks ago. I wonder how many games we will actually win this year. Its sad. This was a 90-95 win team and Larussa has turned it into an 85 win team, if that.

Story about Mark Prior at Yahoo

He’s pitching in an independent league, throwing in the low 90s, and has struck out 20 in 10 innings.
There was also this funny bit: “One batter walks and another belts a drive that Prior’s right fielder flags down over his shoulder at the warning track. Despite the catch, the batter touches them all as if he’d hit a home run, a goofy independent league moment that Prior does his best to ignore.”

TB's Uninteresting Game Notes, 9/1/10
  • Where the hell is the Cards? No sign of the team until after the lineups were announced over the PA (at 12:45).
  • WTF Miles? At SS?
  • It’s Milo Hamilton Day (65 years of broadcasting). Milo gives props to TLR for being gritty back in 1971 with Atlanta.
  • Miles? At SS? Really?
  • Damnit Miles!
  • Why is my row the only one in the stadium that is full?
  • Brett Wallace is a hefty healthy kid.
  • Calling it: Molina = in play, outs. Yeah, I’m psychic.
  • 69 mph curve from Suppan….with a tail wind.
  • Lunch special today at MMP: Lobster, 3-for-1.
  • Colby doubling is Molina-proofing the inning.
  • Time between pitches is being measured in epochs.
  • Scoreboard watching: CIN 2, MIL 0 right now (5 hours before gametime).
  • Clearly, Pence’s homer is Boog’s fault. I mean, Houston scored no runs while Miles was in the game.
  • How can anyone tell if Stavinoha pinch hit for Suppan?
  • Actual screen info on the big board: Wallace needs 278 more HBP to tie Biggio for all-time record. Witty, guys in the PA booth.

Left the game after the Ryan-Pujols-Holliday fail in the 7th. My 4 year old was tossed from our seats for his potty mouthed rant on Miles, Suppan, TLR, and the fact the ballpark’s playground was closed today.
