Hey guys,

Aaron Miles being on the roster isn’t a big deal because he is the 25th man and therefore won’t play much at all.

anyone have the PD's Cardinals iphone app?

worth the $3? And I also noticed that individual games are available for purchase on itunes, though they only have about 6 of them.

by mattyp on Aug 8, 2010 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

I have the Droid app.probabl

I would say that it isn’t worth it. You can get every story on your smartphone web browser and the app has been late in uploading new stories and posts these last few weeks. For example, yesterday the game story didn’t load until 10:30 a.m. for me. By that time, I had already read Leach’s recap on the official site and the P-D game story on stltoday.com two hours earlier. I probably wouldn’t buy it, if I were you.

and then tell Motte and Boggs to prepare themselves to close ballgames and see what happens in spring training between Franklin/Motte/Boggs

i know

Supp has been bad this year and that might be an understatment, but facing the marlins is what he needs. they are not good junk ball hitters and outside of Hanley and Uggla they are very young and inexperienced.. Logan Morrison batting 3rd! So this is a good team for Supp to face. Before the whole they beat us yesterday thing comes up, they hit three bombs and Hanley’s last hit was deep, but all those were on fast balls or some variation that was left over the plate. other than that the look like little leaguers just flailing around

In order to get to opportunity to have moments such as that one,

the team itself has to be talented and lucky enough to be in situations like the ones above. If the Cards and Reds with the division and wildcard and then face eachother in the CS and Holliday hits a game winning home run off of Edinson Volquez who enters the game in relief blah dee blah it’s all really built on things like that 4.4 WAR that got the team to that point.

by hazel on Aug 8, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

the game-winning home run off Hoffman was pretty momentary.

the game winning double off of Broxton was pretty nice as well.

The game-tying hit off of Gregg in the top of the 9th; the 3-run home run off of Wandy; the bases-loaded double off of Bronson Arroyo…

Holliday has 10 PA’s with an individual WPA of over .200 this year- albert has five. FYI.

This is ridiculous

A “moment”? That is so subjective. All four ones you mentioned were NLCS or beyond, which Holliday has not yet reached as a member of the Cardinals. How is that solely his fault? Additionally, except for Wainwright, the other three guys had been on the Cardinals for a long time. Holliday has barely been here a full year. Additionally, I didn’t know you had to have a “moment” to become a “true Cardinal”, especially when said moment is so subjective.

3.5 back

This ship is sinking. I blame Lohse, Penny, La Russa, Ryan, Soup, Skip, Freese, Molina, Miles, and Hawksworth in that order.

Fire La Russa!

by guayzimi on Aug 8, 2010 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

No...

Aren’t we 1.5 back? The Reds will obviously win today – that’s 2 back. Then we’ll likely lose with Soup going on the road – 2.5 back. Then we have three in Cincy, which will most likely result in one team winning 2 of 3. I think it’s more likely they’ll win two than us.

Hopefully we’ll get rained out today. That will allow us to skip Soup. The game will not be made up unless absolutely necessary in which case it would be tacked on to the end of the season. Then we can arrange things to have a better pitcher going, Rasmus in center field, and someone other than Aaron Miles playing second. That is assuming La Russa puts out the best lineup for a do or die game 162, which I think he will do.

Fire La Russa!

IIRC

in 2006, the Cards only played 161 games and Milwaukee lost their last game, so we didn’t need to play the make-up (against the Giants, I think). Carp started game 1 against SD; if I’m not mistaken, TLR said Carp would have started the 162nd game.

radar

here.

Showers and thunderstorms will move east at 10 mph affect most of Metro Broward County through 3 PM, producing occasional to frequent lightning strikes, very heavy downpours causing localized flooding, and gusty winds to 30 mph. Over Miami-Dade County, only isolated showers are expected through 3 PM. Over the Atlantic waters, showers and thunderstorms will be more numerous into late afternoon. Additional showers and thunderstorms moving down the Florida Peninsula will eventually reach Broward and Miami-Dade counties around 4 PM.

I don’t think this game is going to happen, but they’re gonna wait as long as they can. I doubt any decision is made before 5 or 6 at the earliest….

you can’t help but hear that and go, now why couldn’t they have built a whole song out of that instead of surrounding eight bars of win with several minutes of heroin jazz? There There is a great song as well. (Video didn’t make any sense though.) Again that’s what I think is cool about Thief is that it’s got the abstract stuff living comfortably with the more typical Britpop kind of songs.

I get that lyrics aren't always that important.

I listen to Bob Dylan for a different reason than I listen to Animal Collective. But there’s a point where the lyrics get too ridiculous. “Businessmen drink my blood

I found this article on cincinnati.com

The article talks about how the Cardinals are the gold standard of the NL Central because they draw so well and can have a bigger budget.

I really didn’t realize what it must look like to other teams. Kinda like playing in the AL east and not being the Yankees.

Of course, the Cubs outspend the Cardinals by a mile…..so you still have to spend the money wisely.

"I told myself from the very beginning: 'If he's going to throw a shutout, then he's going to tie,'" Wainwright said. "He was not going to beat me today."

I don't know who the guy is who wrote the article

But it sounds like the Reds are kinda in awe of the Cardinals. At least it was very respectful. I wasn’t expecting that.

"I told myself from the very beginning: 'If he's going to throw a shutout, then he's going to tie,'" Wainwright said. "He was not going to beat me today."

by spfldbird on Aug 8, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

It may have been well written, but the content was garbage.

The whining about the smaller population base completely overlooks that Cincinnati is in Ohio, which has twice the population of Missouri jammed into a smaller state. The fans are there to attract. The Reds just aren’t as good at attracting them.

So if they had a better product they would attact more fans, you think?

They are well on their way to a better product. Can they increase their budget?

Garcia may get skipped

per a twitter comment attributed to Tony today, which could mean a Aug 15 start for Suppan if Lohse isn’t ready. The team might actually give Garcia more time off in order to have Jaime available for October. He’s at 121 IP now and is scheduled for 10 more starts this year. If Jaime took all the starts and averaged 5.1, he’d be at 174 IP before the playoffs, which is alot for a young TJ repaired arm.

I know it's a comic, but let's do a body count here.

I count at least 4 probable deaths here.

We have the Red Baron crashing with the person in the green plane in the background. That’s two people. Then there’s the window washer falling lord knows how many stories to his probable death. Then we have the most unlucky guy ever apparently. Not only was a car attempting to run him down but he will most likely die when he dives out of apparent safety only to land directly under a falling scaffold.

Also, Jughead there appears to be talking despite the fact that his jaw is most likely broken from falling directly into a fire hydrant. Did I miss anything?

man thats really too bad its rained out.

I don’t see how in the hell they are going to make it up if they don’t have any common off days? I know there’s a lot of rain in the area but they had all night to play the game. Its not like they had a day game tomorrow. How will they make this up?

There are some advantages though.
1.We are well rested, with the top of our order vs. Cincy
2. Suppan doesn’t start.
3. Whenever it is made up someone better than Suppan will start

Disadvantages
1. We are 2 games back
2. We probably won’t see West when we make it up
3. We have to travel to Miami on one of our off days later this year

are either of these scenarios possible?

Is there anyway they just don’t make the game up? I would think that would be unfair if one team only plays 161 games.

Could they wait until the end of the season, and if the missed game has any impact for either team and playoff implications than they make it up the day after the season ends?

Is it possible for us to travel to FLA on one of our days off and have them play a doubleheader on one of those days? I have never heard of a team hosting two different teams to a doubleheader

Rotoworld gets Boog
Brendan Ryan has been keeping his body movement consistent before he swings, which has resulted in much better production at the plate of late.

Ryan is fidgety and moves around a lot at the dish, but he’s simplified it somewhat, and it’s led to a .413 average over his last 12 games, as his batting average has risen from .186 to .223. “I need to go up another 40 (points) or so,” said Ryan, who hit .292 last season. Last year’s average was likely a fluke, but this year’s has been, as well. The shortstop is probably around a .270 hitter in reality.

that rainout sucks.

only possible date in season would be 9-20, and that would force the cardinals to play 31 games in 31 days to finish the year, something that would have to approved by the players union.

that said, i bet they wait and see if it will matter. but considering the cardinals are 2 games back of the reds (1 on the loss side) and 1 game out of the wild card (tied in the the loss column), i’d be willing to bet the game is going to matter. it’s probably an advantage to the cardinals if they make it october 4th. if that’s the case the marlins will have nothing to play for and the cardinals would gain a huge advantage if that game ends up being for the division or the wild card.

by stlcardinalsfang on Aug 8, 2010 10:07 PM EDT reply actions

i was thinking the same thing if they were gonna make it oct 4th

It would mean nothing to florida and we would be able to put one of our best starters out there.

But the cardinals website is already saying the 20th. I didn’t know it had to be approcved frist though. That could really help. It would suck to have us play all those games in a row down the stretch.

by mick311 on Aug 8, 2010 10:58 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

31 games in 31 days?

Good grief. If it wasn’t for bad luck, the Cards wouldn’t have any luck at all this season. Early-season wins seem to count for more than most people think since the team’s still within distance of the Division and wild card slots.
