What the hell is going on that there can be that many Southwest employees not working?
Who is flying the planes, checking people, and loading luggage while all these shenanigans are taking place?
Southwest employees are the bomb diggity
They get 90,000 resumes a year and hire like 800 new people. There’s a reason it’s basically the only major airline to be profitable year after year.

sometimes you get caught on a break-on-contact play. maybe he could have deked him and gone back, but again, he was probably going on contact.

Even if the play is "go on contact," which it may or may not have been
You still don’t go rumbling home on a one-hopper right back to the pitcher. There’s ALWAYS an element of player judgment involved.

the play at second was worse by far, imo. he should have scored on the single.

Am I the only one who hates baseball milestones?
This whole A-Rod #600 thing has really annoyed me.
Number of people in the “599 Club”: 7
Number of people in the “600 Club”: 7
It’s the same thing as when people get excited about 20 wins in a season for a pitcher. There’s nothing particular about “20” that makes it neat except that it flips the first digit. Why not make 21 wins the base number for an impressive win total?
Bah humbug.

My defense:
know what the difference between hitting .250 and .300 is? It’s 25 hits. 25 hits in 500 at bats is 50 points, okay? There’s 6 months in a season, that’s about 25 weeks. That means if you get just one extra flare a week – just one – a gorp… you get a groundball, you get a groundball with eyes… you get a dying quail, just one more dying quail a week

Reading through the threads and noted another CS by Yadi. Does his "D" more than compensate for the tepid "O" and all the DPs?
My gut reaction is “Yes”, but it would be nice to hear from the stat folks. Note, too, the catchers at AA – Hill and Cruz are producing good numbers. Are either of them on the radar?
Any word on Cox signing?
An optimist is a man who upon discovering that a rose smells better than a cabbage concludes it will make better soup.

One place where sabermetrics really lacks is catcher defense... It was just incorporated into Fangraphs WAR this year
And Yadier Molina improved by 3.6 WAR over 6 seasons, so a great defensive catcher is worth about .6 WAR per season, I suppose
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
and that's assuming
that the catcher defense is properly quantified. there was the BtB article about framing that suggested that the best framing catchers in baseball were worth something like 4 WAR more than average ones. correlation was pretty solid year to year, also. not sure how much stock i put in it, but i don’t have a very good argument against it besides, “i’m skeptical”

i didn’t get to watch any of this game, but don’t want to watch an entire game i know the outcome of. there’s a game that started at 1:20CT that still does not have the condensed game up. wtf
