“The considerable energy . . . transferred to the bat . . . is generated largely by the large muscles of the thighs and torso. The arms and hands serve mainly to transfer the energy of the body’s rotational and transverse motions to the bat and add little extra energy to the bat. In particular, the contribution of the hands and wrists to the energy of the bat is almost negligible.”

sometimes you get caught on a break-on-contact play. maybe he could have deked him and gone back, but again, he was probably going on contact.

Miles .264 is the 2nd worst wOBA projection for a non-catcher to John McDonald’s .259, who is a +5 defender at shortstop vs. Miles -5 at 2B. So yes, Miles is projected to be the worst position player in the big leagues.

know what the difference between hitting .250 and .300 is? It’s 25 hits. 25 hits in 500 at bats is 50 points, okay? There’s 6 months in a season, that’s about 25 weeks. Reading through the threads and noted another CS by Yadi. Does his "D" more than compensate for the tepid "O" and all the DPs?

My gut reaction is “Yes”, but it would be nice to hear from the stat folks. Note, too, the catchers at AA – Hill and Cruz are producing good numbers. Are either of them on the radar?

Any word on Cox signing?

One place where sabermetrics really lacks is catcher defense... It was just incorporated into Fangraphs WAR this year

And Yadier Molina improved by 3.6 WAR over 6 seasons, so a great defensive catcher is worth about .6 WAR per season, I suppose

and that's assuming

that the catcher defense is properly quantified. there was the BtB article about framing that suggested that the best framing catchers in baseball were worth something like 4 WAR more than average ones. correlation was pretty solid year to year, also. not sure how much stock i put in it, but i don’t have a very good argument against it besides, “i’m skeptical”
