Fan Scouting Report
Each year, tangotiger does his annual Fan Scouting Report that compiles ratings of a player's fielding ability on a scale of 1-5. You don't have to know anything about sabermetrics to participate; this is all about the wisdom of crowds and your eyeballs. I know some of you really trust your eyes so go and vote.
We've got a measly 27 ballots right now (59 behind the leader!) so even if you don't know anything about FIP or WAR or UZR, this survey is still for you. All you have to do is watch the Cardinals play baseball!

First person to catch the writing faux paus
gets to pick my next Bender avatar (within the realm of appropriateness) that I will use for the month of September.
Silly humans, this world is for robots.
In the second paragraph...
you imply that the Cardinals play baseball. This is completely unwarranted.

I would have used a comma here:
I know some of you really trust your eyes, so go and vote.
Asshattery: it's an epidemic.
Second base….I’ve played second base, how hard can it be? -TLR
Also, Dave Concepcion.
Need a comma before "so" in the following:
“We’ve got a measly 27 ballots right now (59 behind the leader!) so even if you don’t know anything…”
Colby: "There's been a whole lot of riff-raff going on"
No it's not a grammatical error.
It’s poor writing. Keep looking.

I'm sure there's at least one grammatical error in every post I've ever made.

Just a guess (but you're being WAY too hard on yourself here, Phay-Roh)
But perhaps you wanted to change the “your eyeballs” part to be in the same Subject / Prepositional Phrase format as the “wisdom of crowds”, e.g. “this is all about the wisdom of crowds and the trustworthiness of your eyeballs.”
Adios Esposito.
Adios Sarge. Say a prayer for Surf Boy...wherever he is.
And I voted
Ryan Ludwick on arm strength: “4 – Good”
My feelings after voting on Ryan Ludwick: “1 – Poor”.

Paging the department of redundancy department

That hurts to read. I blame my 15 hour day at work.

current rankings
1. Boog (4.27)
2. Yadi (4.04)
3. Ludwick (no comment)
4. Pujols (3.70)
5. Greene (3.67)
6. Feliz (3.64)
7. Jay (3.61)
8. Colby (3.54)
9. Joe Mather (3.23)
10. Holliday (3.07)
Winn is at 2.79, i’d argue he’s at least a 3.00 assuming that’s average… holliday is closer to 3.50, Feliz is closer to 3.75, i’d argue skip is worse than 2.77 (arm probably helped (wait nevermind 3.8 for arm strength? really – i put 5 because he plays second),
also lopez is most certainly not deserving of his 2.4…. more like 3.2… other than that this is a pretty cool thing… defense mishaps in the case of holliday and lopez seem to have hurt their ranking considerably of course holliday doesn’t look like a good fielder
We're the only fans really qualified to scout his defense since the Pads have scarcely seen him play.

That's why I didn't grade Feliz.
I also didn’t grade Joey Bombs because I wasn’t sure what position to grade him at it.

How is Miles getting an average rating of over a 2.00?

how is Tyler Greene rated above Freese?
wtf

I see Stav is at the bottom
makes sense

here is my order
Brendan Ryan
Yadier Molina
Albert Pujols
Ryan Ludwick
Colby Rasmus
David Freese
Jon Jay
Tyler Greene
Matt Holliday
Pedro Feliz
the other guys just really suck all around. Larue is ok I guess at defense. but not good enough to warrant being on the team

Colby would be ahead of Luddy but that arm...

Ratings
I’m not sure I understand the point of these ratings if you don’t take position into account. Schumaker has an average or below average arm for an outfielder but it’s an above average arm at second. Taking position out of the equation makes little sense really.
If we wanted to rank the best overall athletes then just do so. Why jump through hoops?
You're overthinking it, I believe.
Is Skip Schumaker a good defender, yes or no? From what I’ve seen, his arm seems good but his range is low, his hands are iffy, and his footwork is awkward, so no he isn’t a good defender.
The point of taking position out of the equation is that technically, every shortstop in the league is a better defender than every first baseman because they are simply more athletic and have more demands on them. Does that mean every shortstop should be rated above every first baseman? No, and these rankings are simply of each player’s apparent defensive skill. Albert Pujols has great reflexes and hands. He’s a good defender. I have no idea what would happen if he were put in CF, but it wouldn’t be pretty. That doesn’t change the fact that he is a good defender.

Interesting...
Presently, about 70% of the players rated are rated ‘Above Average’ — not sure if that is some sort of selection bias (ie people are more likely to rate players that are good) or some inherent positive bias from having fans rate their own teams. Incidentally the same was true of last years report.
