it's 4:45am where i am Dan
and i love the last part of UniStraussy’s latest column
Entering the series, La Russa responded to a question about the team’s roster strength by insisting, “We have enough.”
The last four games raised the question: Enough, exactly, for what?
apparently enough to piss away a very promising season Joe

We lost the game he was supposed to pitch
Lopez at SS for 4 innings offset any gain in not facing Stevie
That was about the dumbest thing I've seen.
In what parallel universe, does it say that Lopez is a good trade off for Boog at short?

And this is after...
he washed out at third b/c of bad defense.
I just don’t understand why we can’t have:
C-Molina
1b-Pujols
2b-Lopez
SS-Boog
3b-Feliz
RF-Jay/Craig
CF-Rasmus
LF-Holliday
with a bench of Anderson, Jay/Craig, TGreene, Skip, and Winn.
Every day from now on, no drama.
Fire La Russa!
well... except for Yadi.
not every day.

Okay, so you chose defense first.....
That means don’t bitch when that lineup only puts up 1 run.
It’s hard to put Skip on the bench when he has been hitting much better of late. But having Lopez, Boog, Feliz, and possibly Craig in the same lineup, day after day? No thanks. When you have so many guys that are playing so poorly, you just about have to try and get them AB’s in “best case scenarios”, and play the hot hand. I know, I know, some of you don’t believe in a hot bat. Fine. I do.
Greene cooked his own goose. Based on what he did, he may not even get called up on Sept 1.
What on the bench would produce more?
Skip isn’t the answer. And Craig would only be facing lefties so Jay would get the majority of the starts.
Life is tough, but it's tougher if you're stupid.
- John Wayne
Skip would be better than Lopez vs. righties
After his disastrous start his BA is up to .271 (Lopez is .240). Skip’s hitting has been pretty good since the ASB.
Skip since the ASB
.316/.380/.408/.788
Much better.

I'm just saying he's been better since the ASB
When I said “Much better” I meant much better than he was doing earlier this year. I didn’t mean for it to sound like I was saying he was “much better” than Lopez vs righties.

And has 104 PA. The Cardinals are basically giving a guy projected to be one of baseball’s very worst players ~2 PA a game. That’s scary.

I've made an error here
He’s played 54 games for the Cards this season, but been with the team for longer than that. Still, Alxfritz’s point still holds. He’s not been with the team the whole season nor in MLB the whole season. So saying it’s 104 PA in 129 games isn’t any more accurate than my original comment.

I could only pay so much attention to the last couple games. Since they were disastrous I didn't think much of it.
Then I logged onto VEB and discovered yet another La Russa-centered Shit-storm. This team has become such a nightmare.
No matter which theory you ascribe to the Tony quotes and actions regarding Rasmus, I don’t think there is really a satisfactory endpoint to it. If this is some bizarre “protection” of Rasmus, then why in the hell is Tony so terrible at talking about this stuff out loud? Why the sudden comparison to Jay as if we are talking either/or? If he really does think that Jay might make us more likely to win games the rest of the season with Colby healthy, then he probably needs one of those MRI scans to make sure there aren’t any tumors in there. If it was merely to “give him some time to chill” now that he’s healthy to get back into “game mode” or some other weird thing like that, why frame it in terms of pulling the ball too much and hitting to many homeruns, things that Jon Jay doesn’t do?
And of course there is probably a lot of overreacting going on by us, the fans. I couldn’t read the entirety of the aftermath thread, but I think it is reasonable to conclude that this is not good.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
I agree. I'm tired of overreacting. And whatever it is, it's not good.
Although it was fun for a while to overreact. Colby/TLR has always been a bit of a muddle. Neither are perfect, and we really don’t know what is going on. But it seems to be something everyone has an opinion on. :)
"I'll be in the conversation at the end of the year." Adam Wainwright
Yeah.
Although, I hope I’m not misunderstood… I was trying to say that, whether or not people overreact or make this into something it’s not, it is clear something “not good” is going on with TLR/Colby/the entire season. Overreactions aren’t good either, but I’m more concerned with the Colby situation, because clearly there is one.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
re Jay going the opposite way
I have no numbers to back it up, but my eye-ball tells me that when Jay hits the ball to left field it’s NOT because he goes with the pitch. It’s usually an accidental flare off his bat. Not as severe as Colby, maybe, but Jay IS a pull hitter. Over the long haul, I don’t see his “approach” being much different (less faulty) than Rasmus’.
That said, Colby DOES strike out too much; when he makes contact his bat is lively. And lastly, part of the reason for the Colby Ks, by no means all, but part, is that he routinely gets hosed by plate umpires, thus gets behind in the count too frequently.
Damn umpire match ups.
"In 2035, 25 young men will be able to call themselves world champions. Some of those guys haven’t even been born yet. And some of them are Asian." -Mike Shannon

Apparently, the Colby-umpire matchup was one of the reasons given for his last minute lineup exit last night.

Well, honestly, it depends
If the amount he stands to gain by going to left exceeds the offense that he will forego by going to right less, then he should go the other way more, correct?
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
Also depends on how he's being pitched
and whether he can pull the ball away consistently for base hits and doubles, without sacrificing the plate coverage on the inside half that allows him to keep the ball inside fair and to square it up consistently.
He’s not a spray hitter, and he hits some big flies at times, so him trying to square the ball up the other way a la Wade Boggs or Tony Gwynn is just silly. He should be up there taking his rips unless he’s incapable of pulling the outside pitch for hits (or incapable of laying off of it). I remember that Mac used to stand on top of the plate and dare pitchers to throw the ball inside, because his hands were so quick that he could keep the ball inside fair while still pulling the ball on outside half for hits to left center.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
Wasn't JimmyBaseball a pull-type hitter?
Lefty’s have that tendency, not all, but it seems like a majority like to pull hit.

Leaves him somewhat susceptible. Could that be why when he goes after O-pitches, he either swings and misses or hits weakly?

This happens to relatively every above average power hitter
late in their careers. Manny Ramirez is one glaring exception, but his power numbers have steadily declined, and I think not becoming a pull hitter might be part of the issue. Or it could be lack of steroids (kidding!)

But you never remember JEd
hammering line drives in the left-center gap or hitting line drive singles over the head of the SS, which is what I’m talking about, and what TLR preaches if “Men At Work” is to be believed.
IMO, I’d rather have Rasmus taking his swings with 2 strikes rather than choking up and trying to poke the ball to left field.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
I agree with this, fourstick
When you can smash a ball into a gap or hitting a moonshot bomb on nearly any swing, there’s no reason to choke-and-poke.

Very true.
Edmonds would launch high fastballs over the left-center field wall, but I don’t recall many times where he choked up and took what the pitcher gave him. Nor would I want to see that from him. Same thing with Rasmus. Let him take his swings. The club is better off with his walking ability and power in the lineup walking and hitting homers.
"I'm gonna throw the nastiest curveball I have ever thrown...if he hits it, I'll tip my cap, but if not we're going to the Series."

Right
Was Mark McGwire a better overall player from ‘86-’89 when he was choking and poking with 2 strikes…..
OR
Was he better in ‘96-’99 when he was gripping and ripping all the time while walking a lot more?
I’d say the latter, no matter what you think about steroids. I don’t think Mac would admit it, but I think TLR did as much as anyone to fuck him up mentally when he was younger because of his desire for everyone to “play the right way”.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
spray charts for busch in 2010
select all, then deselect groundouts and flyouts to decrease noise.
if you look at the hit distribution, i see 5 hits for colby in the left field area. jay’s hits are spread everywhere from line to line. i think that calling rasmus a pull hitter and saying jay uses all fields is accurate.
"We were men - flesh and blood - and we played baseball in the sunshine. We hit doubles off the wall, slid hard into second base. We had fights, and we made love. We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives." Buck O'Neil, from "The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O'Neil's America."
That is accurate.
Jay has always been more of a slap hitter than Rasmus. Jay usually has a single in around 20% of his PA’s, which is almost exactly what he has done in St. Louis this season (with a lot of luck). That’s why he slugs in the mid-to-upper-.400’s, too.
Rasmus is more of a pull hitter, and typically has more power than Jay (perhaps, even likely, because of his pull tendancies). I think most people saw the potential for .500+ slugging percentage in him.
The thing that worries about TLR’s statements is that it seems to me that he is needlessly criticizing the type of hitter Rasmus is (a pull hitter) and encouraging him to change his entire approach to be more like Jay (a slappy hitter). To me, this makes no sense.
Also, just to ask because I haven’t sifted through yesterday’s post-game thread comments, Rasmus has a walk rate of 11.4% and Jay has a walk rate of 7.0%, so why would TLR cite to Jay’s ability to take a walk when criticizing Rasmus’s approach?
"I'm gonna throw the nastiest curveball I have ever thrown...if he hits it, I'll tip my cap, but if not we're going to the Series."
--Adam Wainwright on the final pitch of the 2006 NLCS
and honestly, why on earth would you publicly compare two players on your own team in this way?
as a boss, as a parent, who would ever say “why don’t you do it like he does?” and in such a public way?
that seems calculated to engender resentment of the manager, engender conflict between jay and rasmus, and prevent any likelihood of actually changing how colby bats.
generally, i think constructive criticism of a player should be done in private. at worst, you’d say “we’re looking at getting colby to hit to all fields. he has a lot of success pulling the ball, but in the long term i’d rather see him use all fields.” not this “why can’t you be more like your brother” shit.
just terrible management of your players as people. if my boss did this to me in front of my co-workers, i’d be pissed, even if it was otherwise fair. in front of major media?

TLR is wearing very thin on me.
The wearing started with him running Rolen out of town. I’m tired of him out-thinking himself. I’m tired of the overmanaging. I’m tired of Aaron Miles. I’m tired of Pedro Feliz. I’m tired of Skip Schumaker in right field. I’m tired of Mike MacDougal. I’m tired of relief pitchers batting. I’m tired of unnecessary double-switches. I’m tired of being tired of TLR.

Here's what I'd lke to know.
Aaron Miles. Who, really, do we blame him on. TLR? Mo? Both? I mean, Mo did acquire him. But I gotta think that had to be TLR’s request.
I swear. I don’t know.
I blame Mo.
TLR can ask. Mo signs the contracts. Sometimes, part of being the boss is having to look at the forest instead of the trees and say no when somebody asks for something they think will help, but really likely won’t.
Both.
The 25-man roster is a collaboration between manager, pitching coach, and GM, in St. Louis. I suspect it is in most other franchises, too, but it seems particularly clear that TLR has a lot of input into how the 2010 roster has taken shape. That shape has put the Cardinals at a disadvantage when trying to win games.

how soon we forget.
When asked what role La Russa’s support and open lobbying had in his promotion and his return to the Cardinals, Miles didn’t hesitate: “Huge.”
“I think it’s huge,” he said. “I think it’s definitely big. He knows what he’s got in me, and I’m going to prove to him that I’m still that guy.”
That’s from a Commish blog (though I don’t recall who wrote it), and of course the P-D has broken that link.
And if you don’t buy that, there is the interesting coincidence that he was picked up after the Cardinals played in the Bay Area.

that TLR has access and favor from the guy above Mo that gives TLRs whims much more weight

I'm at the point
that if Pujols leaves to make that kind of money somewhere else, then more power to him. We won before he showed up and we will win again after he is gone. If life has taught me nothing else, it’s that nobody is irreplaceable. That may be viewed as blasphemy, but it’s true. That being said, I hope he doesn’t leave.

during the wonderful 9th inning comeback vs the nationals Dan and Al speculated that even though Craig was on deck Franklin would be allowed to hit for himself, because clearly the Cardinals had scored enough runs. Now we’ll never know because there was 1 out, a runner on 1st and Yadi was up to bat, but I’ve seen Tony do this exact thing, but my it’s frustrating to watch the team decide that they’ve scored enough when they’ve got a two run lead in a what’s been a high scoring affair.
Dan and Al liked the idea of Franklin staying the game too.

Isn't TLR's big contribution to team management...
…supposed to be his ability to “Get the most out of his team and make sure always prepared and ready to go?” Or am I just making that up from some sequence of convenient narratives composed media coverage/Dan & All quotes over the years?
And if it’s true, isn’t he kind of failing at it this year? We all know that TLR makes some head scratchers in-game and occasionally outthinks himself. But whatever negative impact those issues had were supposed to be subsumed by the net overall positive impact of his ability to motivate and prepare the team. If that latter aspect of things is gone, then all we’ve got left is the questionable game management.
I’m not trying to bash TLR here – I’m just want to engage in a thought exercise and see if I can get myself to some sort of conclusion regarding the failures against bottom-half opponents, because it sure as hell seems to me like the team isn’t really motivated this season at all.
all accounts coming out of there are that they're mentally drained.
losing does that.
the thing is, when we could’ve had a few winning streaks — aka when everyone was healthy — that third game would inexplicably be dropped. then it became the second game. then when it hit the fan, they were losing series.
the Cardinals are purported to be the hardest-working over-prepared team in the league. if call is at three, they come in at noon, etc. when guys put that much work into it and still lose and lose and lose, yeah, that’s going to mentally wear down. from a route to a battle of attrition.

(I personally don’t like it as an excuse … more as a known condition.) Now, might there be a more complicated explanation? Of course. But this is the Occam’s Razor option. We’re tired of this, and we didn’t do any work. Imagine being the guy on the spot, doing the work and even more work on top of it, and then living through this season.

This is the guy who brought in war heroes to talk to the club — when what they needed to do was loosen up and not press, and that was this April.

That is an egg/chicken argument
I’d argue that winning helps you to play loose. There is no “right” answer on something like this. We have enough vets on the roster that THEY should be the ones controlling the clubhouse, and I have no reason to believe they aren’t. It just happens that most of our vets are “serious” types as well. Carp. Waino. Pujols. Holliday. Those guys aren’t jokesters. Yadi is. We know Ryan is. To me, we seem to have a pretty good mix. We can sit here and guess at the “problem” all day, but fact is, we just don’t know. Could just be that we aren’t as good as we thought. Could just be a tough year. Could be massive chaos in the clubhouse. Who knows.
I am basing this on several months' worth of written and televised reports.
we don’t know everything, but it’s not exactly closed-doors anymore.

I find it telling
as I generally agree with the over-prep, too tight arguments above, that the two players I see standing out (ie stifled by this) are Rasmus and Boog.
Colby, diffident and ‘shy’ and responds to pressure in a retrograde way.
And then the lovable clown, B Ryan, who gets told to check his ADD problem and boyish good heart at the door.
aren't people scared of clowns?
Might be a little simplistic, imo. Brendan kind of twisted himself up this year, by his own admission. For the most part I think he bought in last year, as much as they bought into him. So I don’t think it’s quite that. I’m almost not worried about him ‘cause he’s hit rock bottom without ledge-jumping, and he’s, well, older.
Colby’s an enigma. Maybe not on the Cazana level of enigma. He’s still young and his family life has done a 180 in the last twelve months. Sometimes I think he’s just trying to find the right gear while he fiddles with the clutch, and other times I wonder if he’s internalizing stuff that doesn’t come out quite right. But most people his age are like that. The big X factor is what stuff is getting thrown at him, and we don’t entirely know that either, just that there is something.
It’s almost like… we know the ingredients of the man stew are supposed to work, but somebody left the burner on and now it smells funny.

I think Colby should be ready for a monster year next year
but he’s gotta start playing this year and gaining experience and contributing.
I think maybe the whole problem is the focus on both developing new talent and having a lot of veterans around, and actually losing focus on the here and now and making the playoffs. too much focus on all the other stuff and not on winning games.

So then,
the solution, as Bill Parcells would put it, is to “Just Win, Baby!” :-)
That’s a bit more results-oriented than we tend to like here.
I didn't say that was the solution
the systemic problem is mental focus. (and injuries, but we can’t seem to do anything about that, curse you GOB.)
now, will mental focus improve by preparing even more?
or will mental focus improve by getting everyone to loosen up and stop pressing?
so forth. we don’t know what the clubhouse is like. there’s no Occam’s razor in the solution box, from where we’re standing.

I agree
This team has done so much to fray my fandom psyche. One week they are looking like they are about to start playing like the 93-95 win team that I thought they could be, the next they are losing 4 of 6 to the Pirates/Nationals. It’s been so frustrating that I (for the first time since I can remember) purposefully skipped watching Sunday’s game. I would almost prefer to resign hope for this season, enjoy us winning 87 games and look forward to next year.
Yet, i look at the standings. We are only 3 games behind the Phillies and 5 behind Cincy. The Phillies have looked as resistant to playing more than 162 games as the Cardinals, and the Reds are about to go through the most stressful month (almost) any of the central players on the team have experienced. Nobody has yet to put their foot on our throats and ended the season, so I have faith. Which frustrates me even more.

A manager's primary job
is to get his players ready to play to their best abilities day after day, not matchups, not small-sample-size lineup decisions over which he agonizes as if it’s poor Yorick’s skull.
If LaRussa is unable to do that, he needs to go and the team needs to find someone who will get these players ready to play every day.
And if the organization’s focus is on player development, then LaRussa is psychologically mismatched in the long term, what with his preference for Proven Veterans™.

This segment I think shows the good and bad of TLR… The first caller who insists on a specific lineup (however silly it is), is pretty much berated by Tony. The next caller who compliments him for the Cardinals resiliency, he actually deflects the positive onto the players.
I’m not sure if I buy alot of the “rifts” discussion. There does appear to be some sort of a disconnect between Tony/Cheesemus, but there are an incredible amount of reasons for that. But I have always thought that Tony has done a solid job of not publicly throwing players under the bus (there are exceptions), and gives them credit when the team is successful.
I saw some discussion in earlier threads about TLR and Lud Pud having arguments/problems, and that was a major reason for Studwick being shipped out. That seems silly to me. Mo’s job as GM is to put together a team that creates the most advantageous competitve/financial situation for the organization. If he traded away a hard-working, talented fan favorite because of an argument, he should be fired.
Mike Shannon: "That strikeout was brought to you by...by...well, I don't know what it was brought to you by!"
John Rooney: "It wasn't brought to you by anything Mike."
yeah, I don't buy the Ludwick craziness.

Still...
It was a bummer to see Studwick go. He was one of my favorite players. That being said, I think that we may have come out ahead on that trade. Westbrook has been a more-than-serviceable back of the rotation guy. It doesn’t seem like Luddy has contributed to SD.
Mike Shannon: "That strikeout was brought to you by...by...well, I don't know what it was brought to you by!"

I thought TLR was pretty calm about the whole thing.
From the comments I read here, I thought he was foaming at the mouth or at least hostile.
Now, that’s not to say, he still hasn’t made a lot of screwy decisions. I just don’t see that he was out of line at all on that segment.
I know I tend to read between the lines when it comes to TLR and Rasmus. I don’t want to see another Anthony Reyes.
"I'll be in the conversation at the end of the year." Adam Wainwright
TLR on Anderson
When asked about Anderson on defense, TLR describes him as “gutty,” “scrappy,” and “tough as nails.” That bodes well, I would think, even if TLR concludes with the old standby that Anderson could use more time in AAA to become the best player he can be.
"I'm gonna throw the nastiest curveball I have ever thrown...if he hits it, I'll tip my cap, but if not we're going to the Series."

The scary thing...
is that our manager is advocating for Skip to play second because “he’s got his average up to 270” and “he’s hit 300 a few years in a row” and “we won 90 games with him last year.”
These statements wouldn’t fly in a freshman-level logic class, and this guy is the leader of a $500 million enterprise. What is it about baseball that makes so resistant to innovation?

The last seven games have been, to say the least, troubling
For the forseeable future the only offensive cavalry, riding to the rescue, is Colby Rasmus. Something, well, weird is going on there. I don’t have many of the facts of the matter beyond a typically La Russian post-game quote that, given it’s source, was either a thinly veiled insult or a poorly worded defense of his player (I’m inclined to believe the first though with La Russa you never do know. Seriously this man’s got a law degree and his speaking and communication skills are completely nonexistent. How does that happen?). So who the hell knows when Rasmus will get consistent playing time again.
Even with Colby in the lineup, the Cardinals will be playing with a black hole of offensive suck at 3rd and the mash of Schumaker/Miles/Lopez/Boog up the middle that even in the best of times can’t be considered a crew of thunderous bats. They’re going to have a brutal time scoring runs, probably even with Rasmus’s bat in there, unless Pujols and Holliday go unconscious every game from here on out. AND EVEN THEN it may not be enough juice. I actually didn’t hate the Ludwick trade because I figured with Rasmus in CF and the Jay/Craig combo in RF the Cards could probably cover the hole up esp. if Mo could find another piece. However with Feliz in the mix I’m not so sure anymore. For the first time all season I’m genuinely worried about this team’s ability to make the playoffs.

Haven't had a winning record in September since 2004
For all the successes the team has had, finishing strong has not been a trademark of this team for a long time. I think it is fair to question if the team is beaten down annually by this stage of the season. All the lineup changes, etc., are presumably designed to keep guys fresh for the end of the season. A critical thinker might start questioning whether our approach is having the desired impact at this stage….but do we have any of those?

Just a thought here, but...
…amidst all the hand-wringing and doomsaying (myself included in both of those) it bears mentioning that a case can be made that the Cards are actually doing pretty decently just to be where they are right now.
If I had told you that, at the start of the season,
1) We’d lose 2 of our 5 starters for the season (or at least lose their effectiveness, in Lohse’s case.);
2) Two separate plans for third base would evaoprate out from under us;
3) Skip, Boog and Yadi would perform at or near career-worst levels on offense for the first half of the season,
4) Colby would end up with maybe 130 games played on the season (ok, maybe this wouldn’t have been a shock);
5) We’d trade out third-best hitter away in hopes of replacing Penny/Lohse;
6) For extended stretches, our roster would boast the presence of Aaron Miles, Jeff Suppan, PJ Walters, Pedro Feliz, Nick Stavinoha and Mike MacDougal, and all would get at least some playing time in leverage situations;
7) Our global “insurance policy” player – Felipe Lopez – would try 2/3 of the way through the season to take some of the slack off Miles for all the “worst player in the majors” comments,
then would you really expect us to be anywhere CLOSE to first place?
I’m not happy with the way things have gone either, but I thought it might be a nice palate cleanser to at least think things could be much, much worse.
yeah
this is a good point… we could easily not even have a chance by now. at least there’s still a small window of opportunity left since the Reds really aren’t all that great. and this team should theoretically be able to win games with Pujols, Holliday, Wainwright, and Carpenter (not to mention Garcia) on the team. Unfortunately, Waino hasn’t looked like himself lately and there’s only so much 2 players can do for your offense.

This doesn't really fly...
with the big four performing at a high level we should win a minimum of 90-92 games regardless of what happens with anyone else. What’s knocked us off that pace is bad luck (-5 vs pythag) more than anything. LaRussa also hasn’t helped, obviously…
Fire La Russa!
Pujols + Holliday + Waino + Carp alone = 90 wins?
Regardless of surrounding talent? I’m hard pressed to believe it’s that simple.
well...
those guys were worth 25 wins last year and are at 20 wins this year with a month to go. If you pencil them in for 23 wins and assume 49 wins as replacement level that gets us to 72. Molina is a 3 win player if he doesn’t hit a thing, Rasmus is worth 2 in a down year, Ludwick/Jay/Craig is worth 2 in a down year, Miles/Feliz/Greene/Ryan/Freese/Skip/Lopez will be worth 5 wins this year and the group has been worse than expected for one reason or another… That gets us to 84 wins. Could we get 6 more wins out of 3 starters/bullpen/bench if things went poorly? Probably…
Fire La Russa!
Me too but I do agree Tony has cost us
4 or 5 wins……which would mean we should close to 20 games over .500 not 10

Hanging out here with you guys is starting to remind me
of cubs fans around here… the biggest difference is that none of them have seen a team get to the WS in their life times.. where as on average I would say most VEBers have seen the Cards in about 4 or 5… some of the elders may have seen the really good days in the 60’s.. I doubt anyone posting here has seen anything older than that. but I am getting off my own topic…
We are so gloomy and angry all the time.
Oh another difference… at least there is attempt at intelligent discussion instead of getting drunk and telling everyone else their team sucks just because they arent’ the cubs.
I am getting that kind of feeling though that I use to get from talking to them.. This year they haven’t been giving me crap though… could it be pity?

You know what I remember of 1998
Manny Aybar and Juan Acevedo in the starting rotation. Todd Stottlemyre was the staff ace.
Yes, yes, McGwire, very good, and all that.
But I remember John Frascatore and Donovan Osborne. That’s what I remember about that year.

unfortunately, it caused me to mostly miss the ’82 WS win. And then I WAS paying attention by the time ’85 and ’87 rolled around.

1998
Was my first year with MLB Extra Innings. So I got to enjoy every excruciating blown save, Manny Aybar appearance and McGwire homer.
My formative years were the Ted Simmons late 1970s Cardinals.

ohh rough.. late 70's
I really became a true fan (as in not just cuz my dad is a fan) in the late 80’s when I was swooned by Willie McGee, Jose Oquendo, Tom Brunanski, Ozzie Smith. and of course Vince Coleman…. But I also loved young Ray Lankford and Brian Jodan in the early 90’s ..
I was stoked about big Mac when we got him… but that was nothing compared to Jim Edmonds.. I loved that move so much.. He was soo much more exciting than Big Mac and I have more fond memories of Jimmy’s heroics than Mark’s… The came PUJOLS!!

I vaguely remember the 70's teams.
I remember Simba catching and the Mad Hungarian and Bob Forsch of course. As for the good and the bad of them, not so much. Hell, I was only 6-9 in that time span, and baseball coverage was a little different back then. I do remember getting Ozzie and the events leading to that trade.

I know Memphis needs most of their guys for the stretch run so it will be intersting to see who comes up….hopefully enough guys to avoid Kyle Lohse batting 5th in an extra innings game.
Too bad Gotay, Descalso and Lynn arent on the 40 man, those are all guys id like to see get some PT. I figure probably Greene, Mather, McLane….who else?

Occasionally I do because there’s a handful of people that post elsewhere that I’m interested in reading their comments. The downside is that I have to sift through a ton of lunatic bullshit to find anything remotely interesting — hence why I don’t do it very often.
Today I happened across some disparaging remarks towards me and VEB. I don’t mind it much though because the people that made them did so on a forum I don’t care for personally and the company they keep speaks towards their level of intelligence. i think she is disagreeing with the premise of why gay men and straight women make good friends.
and i disagree, too. part of it is instinctual competition, i think. i don’t know what the rest is. i like male friends better than women as a general rule, straight or gay. but then the gay ones are extra nice because we have other things in common.

The evidence is two-fold
First, it’s visual. I know quite a bit about baseball, and the baseball swing. TO ME, his swing looks slow.
Secondly, it’s been SAID (not verified), that both Mac and Tony think he needs to make changes to succeed consistently at the big league level.

I think there's a lot of evidence that
Craig’s swing has worked for him in the past. I don’t see any red flags with his swing.
If you normalize his prodution for batted ball rates he has a .312 wOBA which is no great shakes but better than what he’s done to date.

Because you disagree?
I think it’s weak to call Craig a top anything hitter for STL right now. I don’t care what his LD rate is, or his babip. I’ve watched nearly every ML AB he has taken, and I’m not impressed. Is there some potential? Sure. Is he likely to have to make big changes to realize that potential? I, personally, think so. Maybe I’m wrong, and if so, I’ll come back and admit it.
Why would you not care how many...
line drives Craig has hit when we’re trying to figure out if Craig is a good hitter?
A good hitter being mostly defined by a guy who hits lots of line drives.
Fire La Russa!
by guayzimi on Aug 30, 2010 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
For several reasons
I love how nobody on this board ever wants to take the SSS route with the LD stat.
I also don’t like how the classify them. I’ve seen Craig hit, with my own eyes, 3-5 balls that were probably categorized as LD’s, that were terrible balls. A couple of them he got sawed off on, but the ball still managed to SOFTLY, uh, line itself, out to 2B. How is that better than a hard hit ground ball? Or even a fly ball to the track?
But again, SSS can effect LD rate as well. There is nothing unlucky about getting sawed off, and hitting a soft line to 2B. And like I’ve said, I’ve seen Craig do that 2-3 times alone. With his sample size, 2-3 balls makes a pretty big difference.
MILES!!!
oh wait… not an option
"When a pitcher's throwing a spitball, don't worry and don't complain, just hit the dry side like I do." - Stan Musial
"When I knocked a guy down, there was no second part to the story." - Bob Gibson
"Son, what kind of pitch would you like to miss." - Dizzy Dean
i would like to know how Stanley sees that
but you know, he’s ignoring me
i’ll go cry in the corner now
..i miss ludriguez-wick..
there's a simple reason for that.
batted ball rates and plate discipline stats are cited more often in small sample sizes because they have less noise in them. they accurately reflect what the hitter is DOING.
result stats, like batting average, reflect some of what the hitter is doing, some of what the defense is doing, and a lot of luck. so there’s more noise in the mix.
I don't disagree completely
But Craig’s small number of AB’s this year is still too small IMO.
Also, there is a human element to what is considered a LD vs what is not. Give me a hard ground all over a sawed off LD. And while I don’t want Miles trying to muscle up and go yard, I’d say that a deep, hard hit fly ball from a power guy is in some cases better than a weak LD.
Well...
I just trust the guys who sit at games and record this stuff more than you or me or any other fan. Not that they are perfect.
Even if you aren’t impressed by his line drives, he’s hit 22 ground balls and only 2 have resulted in hits. By comparison, Aaron Miles is 16 for 48 on ground balls and you can’t possibly tell me that Craig has hit his grounders softer than Miles.
Fire La Russa!
Another problem I have
What if Craig is pounding his ground balls into the ground? What if none of them are hit particuarly hard? How would that be “bad luck”? I’m not saying that is the case, I don’t really know. But it certainly could be. What stat measures that? On the other hand, I’ve seen Miles hit several ground balls hard. It doesn’t suprise me that a good number have snuck through the infield. Again, what stat can differentiate between a guy that is slapping hard grounders all over the infield, vs a guy that is on his front foot, and pounding ground balls into the ground?
I have personally witnessed several ground balls that Aaron Miles hit softly that snaked through the infield.
I therefore declare his BABIP to be lucky.
"I'm gonna throw the nastiest curveball I have ever thrown...if he hits it, I'll tip my cap, but if not we're going to the Series."

If you don't know...
whether his grounders were hit hard or not, it’s better to assume what’s more likely instead of what is less likely. And what’s more likely is that the distribution of grounders in terms of how hard they were hit is similar to the average major leaguer. The average major leaguer gets about 1 hit every 4 grounders. If Craig followed this he would have had 5 hits off grounders instead of 2 and his batting average would be 50 points higher.
Fire La Russa!
I’ve seen Craig hit, with my own eyes, 3-5 balls that were probably categorized as LD’s
If you’d stop saying things that are 100% random, baseless conjecture, other posters might be more amenable to your points. Instead you continue to make things up that are problematic because they’re so easy to nitpick.
Silly humans, this world is for robots.
How is that random?
I watch the games. There is nothing random about that. Fact, there are some balls hit that are categorized as LD’s that aren’t “good hits, or well hit balls, or balls that have a good chance of being a hit”. Until babip finds a way to account for that, to me it’s just another stat that has a hole in it. Maybe it doesn’t affect most guys…..I don’t recall AP hitting many soft liners, given his number of AB’s, and maybe some guys are affected a lot. Right now, I don’t think LD% and babip reflect how well Craig has hit the ball.
How do you know which balls are categorized as line drives?
More specifically, how do you know that there have been 3-5 instances where a ball was classified as a line drive but, in your opinion, were in fact terrible?
I’m not engaging in the BABIP argument. That’s not my point. My point is that you like to make statements that are unfalsifiable to support your point. How can anyone have a conversation with someone who does that?
Silly humans, this world is for robots.
Show me a stat that proves...

Your evidence...
…is what you’ve seen watching the guy play and a quote from the manager and hitting coach. Here’s the problem with both…
- What you see watching a game in real time doesn’t really matter. Ask our resident mechanics of baseball expert, Chris O’Leary (aka thepainguy) if watching games in real time is the best way to judge a guy’s physical movements. The human eyes just don’t work that well. If you’ve taken any class in Biological Psychology or Sensation and Perception you’d know that. Our eyes aren’t good for objectively judging how fast something is moving or else cops wouldn’t need radar guns and stuff. Long story short, your real-time perceptions of Craig’s swing speed don’t hold much water.
- You’ve provided neither a link to this reported quote by LaRussa and McGwire nor any other way to check and see if it were actually said. That means we’re just going to take your word for it, and I’m sorry but that’s just not how the world works.
So that’s why your argument is weak, and because it’s weak I disagree, not the other way around. You argued he had a slow bat and used weak evidence to support it, so I’m forced to say that while you very well may be actually correct, I’m not about to just take your word for it.

I'm not measuring bat spped
with my eyes. I’m seeing that Craig gets jammed more than most guys. I see that Craig gets sawed off more than most guys. I see that Craig is simply late on balls, more than mot guys. Is that not a sign? I also see that he has an odd, long starting mechanism. Can some guys get away with that? Sure. Julio Franco comes to mind.
I cannot provide you a link to something that was said on tv, during two seperate games. Either call me a liar, or accept it as true. Or go rewatch the game. That is all I can offer you.

Not exactly what I meant
I’m replying to dozens of posts, you guys are just replying to me. I’m in a hurry.
I’ve watched Craig in the past, and not been super impressed. I figured average ML bench bat was probably his upside, with maybe a role in RF as a platoon guy. I started watching closer this year, especially upon his last couple of recalls.
I’m out for the day. Or at least for awhile. There is a lot fo good info on this board, but damn, God forbid somebody disagree with the group of guys that run the site, and those that all happen to be on the same page. You guys aren’t always right, and neither am I. But to essentially say that any of you could run a team or an organization better than guys that have been schooled for it, and having been doing it, successfully in several cases, is laughable. There are plenty of good teams that have bad years. It happens. Ever heard the expression “that’s why they play the game”? If putting together a good team on paper meant everything, the Yanks would have even more WS titles.
I’m think skinned, it doesn’t “bother” me, but I’d suggest some of you think about how you respond to people that having differing opinions. I haven’t come onto the board saying I’m 100% right, and you guys are wrong. All I’ve done is post my opinion, that happens to differ. Sure, some of my support isn’t “good” support. Doesn’t mean it is wrong though. And I did present facts and stats, specifically when talking about Craig as the 4th best hitter today.
but you didnt present facts,
just opinions that you SAID are facts. i dont doubt your sincerity, but i think you are wrong.

um, guayzimi said that allen craig was the fourth best hitter.

if you want to complain about people’s responses, then maybe you shouldn’t start shit. it’s not like you said “jon jay is the fourth best hitter on the team” and everybody piled on and said “oh no, how stupid are you? it’s allen craig!”
if you want the blog to be a nice quiet one where everybody gets to believe different stuff then don’t challenge people in an obnoxious way.

if we are trying to predict what Craig is going to do in the future
at what point do we mix in some of his major league at bats into the minor league predictors? also, what does Jay have to do to get rated above Craig? go back into the past and do better in the minor leagues?

Oh, I'm not disagreeing with you that Jay isn't hitting better than Craig right now
Craig’s clearly in a funk. But I think that he’s a better hitter overall than Jay
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
he may end up being that
but I take issue with so many people here saying that he IS a better hitter than Jay, when clearly he hasn’t shown that yet.

ZiPS RoS projection does this,
and projects a .319 wOBA.

again
that could happen. but I think he has more muscle than that and more skills than that. I usually defer to stats and projections, but Jay is not that bad a player, I will be very very surprised if he puts up a .319 wOBA for the rest of the season or for next season.
"Nah….He’s an infielder. Second base…..I played second base, how hard can it be?"
by Cards Fan in Chitown on Aug 30, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions
It would take a full season or two...
keep in mind Jay has had about 230 at bats and Craig about 90 in the majors this year. Craig’s babip is about 150 points below Jay’s and Craig’s “slow bat” is hitting more line drives and he walks more.
Fire La Russa!
There isn't a stat or projection out there
That would call Craig our 4th best hitting option today. Not one. He just had an entire month to prove himself…..he got plenty of August AB’s, and he managed to OPS .670 for the month.
A few comparisons, over that same time frame:
Miles – .801
Skip – .775
Molina – .795
So…..you cannot show me any kind of prediction, either preseason or current that would put Craig in the top 4. Craig hasn’t had a top 4 season (not even close) in the bigs this year. AND…..he hasn’t been top 4 in the last month, despite getting consistent playing time.
Sounds to me that you want to CALL him the 4th best hitter, even though there is no proof of that at all.
As for trolling, this isn’t trolling. If you want to talk baseball, talk baseball. I’m done having people start shit b/c they have low self esteem, or whatever your problem is. Going forward, people that attack me and not my thoughts, I’m ignoring. I’m not dealing with the games.
I'm going to have to agree
you can’t JUST say that Craig is your 4th best hitter JUST because he was good in the minor leagues. I realize this will change once he gets more major league at bats
"Nah….He’s an infielder. Second base…..I played second base, how hard can it be?"
by Cards Fan in Chitown on Aug 30, 2010 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Even so
taking his great AAA stats, if you projected them to the majors, and he actually lived up to that prediction, I still don’t think that would be top 4. Probably not even top 6-7.
I'd say given how cruddy this team is past the top 3 hitters
he’s probably 5th or 6th best hitter
"Nah….He’s an infielder. Second base…..I played second base, how hard can it be?"
by Cards Fan in Chitown on Aug 30, 2010 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions
If that is true.....
It’s no wonder we stink. There probably won’t be a playoff team one who’s 5th or 6th best hitter isn’t leaps and bounds better than Craig.
our top 2 hitters are so good it makes our team offense look better than it actually is
"Nah….He’s an infielder. Second base…..I played second base, how hard can it be?"
by Cards Fan in Chitown on Aug 30, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions
That is the problem with our offense.
Without Rasmus, we have an extremely poor offense that has been plagued but some severe batted ball bad luck.
"I'm gonna throw the nastiest curveball I have ever thrown...if he hits it, I'll tip my cap, but if not we're going to the Series."
--Adam Wainwright on the final pitch of the 2006 NLCS
Yes, let's make judgments on player ability based on 30 days and a handful of PA's.
I agree that Craig is not the 4th-best option on offense, but the whole, “he just had an entire month to prove himself” logic is just as nonsensical. I don’t think that “entire” should ever be used as an adjective before “month” in baseball.
"I'm gonna throw the nastiest curveball I have ever thrown...if he hits it, I'll tip my cap, but if not we're going to the Series."
--Adam Wainwright on the final pitch of the 2006 NLCS
A month is plenty
of time to analyze the here and now.
We aren’t trying to figure out what kind of potential Craig has for the future. We aren’t trying to figure out next year, the next 5 years, or the next decade. If that were the case, I’d agree with you that a month means squat.
But if you can’t use the season as a whole, and the last month to predict/analyze/evaluate the NOW, then what can you use? The only thing that might be better is simply watching his AB’s. I don’t come away particularly impressed using that method either.
You have disproven your own argument.
In fact, we are attempting to project to the future: tonight’s game.
"I'm gonna throw the nastiest curveball I have ever thrown...if he hits it, I'll tip my cap, but if not we're going to the Series."
--Adam Wainwright on the final pitch of the 2006 NLCS
That is one way of looking at it
I don’t agree though.
If you think Craig’s long term potential has more of an impact on tonight’s game then the last month, well, we just aren’t going to agree. That is ridiculous to me. Craig may never realize his long term potential. Or it may take him 5 years. Or 2 years. Or another year. The chances of that transformation happening tonight? Slim in my mind.
There is no more reason to believe that Craig will reach his potential this week than next July or June 2012.
"I'm gonna throw the nastiest curveball I have ever thrown...if he hits it, I'll tip my cap, but if not we're going to the Series."
--Adam Wainwright on the final pitch of the 2006 NLCS
I disagree
That is like saying a roulette wheel is no more likely to hit a number between 15-30, then it is to hit one. If it’s random, then having more options is more likely. It’s more likely Craig will “find it” in the future, since the future contains a hell of a lot more games then tonight does.

No, that is not remotely sustainable—-not even “well kinda”. Michael Bourn hits .260 on groundballs. Just normalizing that and Miles is rocking a .270/.295/.310 type line. The guy blows.

lord, i really just hope Mo did most of the questionable moves this year at TLRs behest, just so he could turn to DeWitt and say, i did it his way and it imploded, can we move on b4 Pujols walks…..
Stupid roster management again.....
If they wait 2 days, both would be available for the playoffs…..not that we really need to worry about that.

Late-season Meltdown
It seems to me LaRussa teams have a history of this. The only time they get in the playoffs is when they coast for the last month. I was faintly disgusted when the ‘06 team backed its way in losing the last, what, 8 games in a row, just because the astros were making a run to put a little pressure on them, and then they won it all (because there were no longer any expectations!) Witness also the ’04 series, and the ’05 nlcs against Houston, and last year’s choke-job (Holliday’s miscue notwithstanding). And his A’s blew one of the all-timers against Kirk Gibson and the Dodgers… (‘88?). Just my impression. I’m not a TLR fan at all – I think he overmanages like crazy – but even aside from giving away games, he winds his teams so tight it’s hard for them to respond positively when the crunch comes.
In 2001
the Cardinals rallied to grab the wild card. That remains the one and only time a LaRussa-managed team came back from as many as five games back in late August to make the playoffs.

to continue the tony bashing
because, well, I’m bored.
Tony qualities:
- manipulative
- not afraid to use a situation to his advantage, or to be dishonest (sometimes that actually helps the team I must admit, but he kind of breaks even here since sometimes it blows up in his face)
- probably takes things too seriously for the team’s good
- dogmatic
- judgmental
- relies on batting average when it’s been pretty clear for a while now that on base percentage is superior
- has unrealistic views (Miles?)

And only start one? I hope not….i hope this was him just wanting to give Jay a rest and not bat too many lefties.

Can I say that I don't think Craig has performed well at the majors?
Because he hasn’t. I feel like that gets lost in the conversation — at least for me. It’s more that I don’t think his performance to date is indicative of a mechanical flaw or that it’s predictive given the sample size. If you normalize his wOBA you still get just a .312 when batted balls are considered.
I’ve thought Craig has a major league bat for a while. But he hasn’t been a good hitter so far.

who?
"We were men - flesh and blood - and we played baseball in the sunshine. We hit doubles off the wall, slid hard into second base. We had fights, and we made love. FSH just showed two middle aged guys sitting next to each other
One in an Astros jersey, one in a Cardinals.
Neither looked happy to be there.
So, now TLR is saying that Colby sat yesterday because Tony wanted to give him an extra day of rest?
WTF was all that about yesterday, then?
