Game 128: St. Louis Cardinals @ Washington Nationals

St. Louis Cardinals at Washington Nationals, Aug 29, 2010 1:35 PM EDT

  Wainwright_medium
Lannan_john_medium
Adam Wainwright John Lannan
2.18 ERA 5.23 ERA
2.86 FIP 4.80 FIP
2.82 tERA 5.47 tERA

Time to try and salvage a split. It saddens me that that is the goal we're left with against the Nationals.

For everyone that is not GDM and has mustered the ability to install StreamTorrent,
the link to today’s stream is to be found here

the channel is IceTV3 240k ST

or put this string together (remove only the line feed breaking
it in two and nothing else) and throw it into Stream Torrent:

w/r/t the Nyjer Morgan thing...

I had forgotten about this but Morgan’s teammate Adam Dunn steamrolled Carlos Santana on a sort of similar play and got a lot of props for being the take-no-shit veteran teaching the rookie the rules of the game:

http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=8961373

I bet Morgan wanted to repeat the same trick on Anderson. It appears in the video that his attempt at taking out Anderson actually caused him to miss home plate, as he was looking up instead of down. Douche…

Fire La Russa!

by guayzimi on Aug 29, 2010 1:30 PM EDT reply actions

yeah but
“If Nyjer was playing today, he’d get hit,” Riggleman said. “If an opposing player did that to my catcher and came to the plate, he’d get hit.”

a team still chasing the division title doesn’t do that. riggleman can’t know what that’s like though..

morgan will get drilled next season, he’ll get what’s coming to him

not even close

that was 2nd inning tie game

santana was on the plate

dunn didn’t go out of his way

checked to see if he was okay afterwards

the only thing similar was there was contact

by YesWeOquendo on Aug 29, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not personally equating the two events....

just saying maybe the Dunn incident planted a seed in Morgan’s mind… or maybe he really did think it was Riggleman behind the mask.

I'm trying to tell you

1a. this is not a non-story because we’ve been waiting for Rasmus for ages,
1b. the constant updates from all outlets = no one in the pressbox is letting it go
2. Strauss is not the only person reporting this

I’m not arguing the point that he’s a douche, but until we hear more, that is the actual news. it’s news in itself that the pressbox doesn’t have a straight answer for this.

More about Colby. Excuse the comment length.
The intrigue surrounding center fielder Colby Rasmus continues to grow, though this time apparently not through Rasmus’ doing.

Minutes away from making his first start since Aug. 15, Rasmus was removed from Sunday’s lineup by manager Tony La Russa due to what sources familiar with the situation say were La Russa’s concerns about a matchup of Rasmus and plate umpire Rob Drake. La Russa met with the umpiring crew before Sunday’s start over a Saturday eighth-inning incident in which Washington Nationals outfielder Nyjer Morgan gave a blind-side forearm to catcher Bryan Anderson. It isn’t known at this time if Rasmus’ history with Drake was discussed. La Russa discussed Rasmus’ return to the lineup at length prior to meeting with the crew and offered no second thoughts regarding Rasmus’ start. Rasmus was posted as the Cardinals’ No. 6 hitter about two hours before first pitch.

Rasmus was stunned when La Russa notified him of the scratch less than 30 minutes before first pitch, according to the source.

I wouldn't say it's laying down

Injuries and stuff have left a team that just cannot hit outside of Pujols and Holliday. Miles and Jay are/were bound for regressions (and high batting average aside Miles hasn’t been that great anyway), Boog isn’t that great of a bat in the best of times, and Feliz can’t hit at all. Add in Molina’s down year stats, no Rasmus, and the pitcher you have a pretty weak set of hitters.

If the Cards fizzle out in September, is anyone looking forward to STL Hockey and Football more this year than the last 5 or so?

I don’t expect the Rams to win more than 2 games, but I think watching Steven Jackson will be nice as usual, and it will be interesting to see how Bradford can perform.

The Blues took a bit of a step back last season, but it’s still exciting to see what Eric Jackson, Perron, Oshie, Steen and Backes can do. Can’t wait to see what Halak can do in goal. Love to see Janssen (or is it Jannsen?) whoop on somebody.

Rams +2500 to win the division...

I’m liking that. If you think about the quarterbacks and O-lines in the NFC West, the Cardinals, Seahawks, and Niners could all conceivably slump to 6 or 7 wins. The Rams would have to overachieve to win 8 or 9, but it’s very possible.

I don't even have words-
According to Cards manager Tony La Russa, Colby Rasmus’ approach at the plate will determine how frequently Rasmus is in the lineup over the season’s final five weeks.

A Cardinals team in need of a boost could certainly use Rasmus’ combination of power and on-base ability in the lineup every day or close to it. However, La Russa still feels that there is too much inconsistency in Rasmus’ at-bats. The more the second-year center fielder erases that tendency, the more he’ll play.

this sums it up for me

“He’s had all the work,” La Russa said. “He’s never backed off the work, taking batting practice. I think it all has to do with what his concentration is, and what his focus is. I do believe that, you just watch his swings in batting practice and in the game, I think he is convinced that he helps us more if he just yanks the ball out of the park. That normally is not the case, because you’re limiting yourself to a side of the park and you’re vulnerable to too many pitches. We really push, ‘Just play the game.’ That’s what Jon [Jay] does. He plays the game. take a single, take a walk, let the home runs come.”

La Russa is a moron.

Colby Rasmus: 131 wRC+
Jon Jay: 139 wRC+

One of those numbers is the product of an insanely high BABIP though. From StatCorner:
Rasmus: .354 wOBA (adjusted for park and batted balls)
Jay: .337 wOBA (adjusted)

At what point do we just acknowledge that the game may have passed up La Russa? Or at the very least, that he’s a terrible evaluator of talent.

Silly humans, this world is for robots.

add in the defense

and it’s clear that Jon Jay isn’t anywhere near the level of talent that Colby is, notwithstanding Jay’s commendable effort this year. To throw Colby under the bus like that while touting Jay is just indefensible.

by mattyp on Aug 29, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I would argue that Rasmus has more power but is not tons better than Jay at defense when you factor in his arm

his throws from the outfield have never been too impressive. but his speed is. he’s even faster than Jay and makes it look easy.

That's the way it should be.....

And not just with Colby, but with just about everybody not named Albert, Holliday, Waino, and Carp. Unless you are a bona-fide, proven all star, you shouldn’t have an automatic spot in the lineup or the rotation.

Colby takes some piss poor AB’s. If it were a funk, or a talent issue, that would be one thing. I think TLR thinks it’s a concentration/effort issue. Why the **** would you not limit his playing time? I think some of you forget that we struggled WITH Colby in the lineup for much of the year. He isn’t some kind of savior.

Huh?

When has either of those players gotten substantial time IN PLACE OF Colby? It hasn’t happened.

That said, if Colby can’t show the effort, or fire, or professionalism that TLR wants, and that the vets want, and that the organization is built on, sit him. He’ll either learn, or he’ll be gone.

I can say that, b/c I don’t think Colby is some perennial all star like a lot of folks on here do. First it’s TLR doesn’t like rookies, then he starts Garcia all year, and Jay and Freese most of it. He’s given plenty of young pitchers innings the last few years. It’s retarded. I don’t see how it’s TLR’s fault that Waino laid an egg today. I don’t see how it’s TLR’s fault that Lohse stinks. I don’t see how it’s TLR’s fault that Holliday pops up to the infield with a guy on 3rd and less than two outs.

Some of you guys don’t want to be wrong about your player evaluations, so you blame EVERYTHING on the manager. Lineup construction isn’t this teams’ problem. If you must blame one person, I’d start with Big Mac. I don’t like the things I’ve seen at the plate from this year’s team. That starts with the hitting coach.

I playerd a lot of select basketball for very good teams

One year, we had this coach who though he was a genius, and his emphasis for that year was shot selection and shot making. So, any time you took what he considered a bad shot or missed what he considered an easy shot, no matter how well you had been playing up to that point, he would immediately pull you out of the game, yell at you in front of everyone, and then bench you. Obviously, this strategy vastly improved our team and we made all our easy shots from there on out and never again took a bad shot, right? No, actually we just got worse and worse as we played tighter and more timidly with each passing game. I seriously think that’s the effect Tony is going to have on Colby, if he hasn’t already.

by mattyp on Aug 29, 2010 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

That might be true

But Tony can’t treat other players that way, and then “baby” Colby. If it’s ONE player that has a hard time with TLR’s style, maybe that player shouldn’t be here. Unless that one player is Pujols. Then maybe we should look at changing managers.

by Stanley1 on Aug 29, 2010 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Proves my point.....

TLR didn’t say Raz hits too many HR’s. He said he tries to do that all the time, including in BP when he should also be working on other things. We don’t need Raz to be a slugger…..hell, he’d be terrible in that role. We need him to be the complete baseball player we were told he was. And if he isn’t even trying to do that, then I don’t care how much or little he plays. Jay is being coachable. Garcia is being coachable. Freese is being coachable. If Raz isn’t, do you really want him taking AB’s away from guys that are? We aren’t the Brewers, or some other poorly ran organization. I’d be the team leaders would agree.

I don't see the problem

with TLR’s argument.

Part of being an advanced hitter is being able to hit all pitches, to all fields, against both righties and lefties. Does Jay not do that considerably better than Colby? I think he does.

by Stanley1 on Aug 29, 2010 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Who cares if he can hit the ball better to all fields?

When Colby hits the ball it has a more positive outcome on the game than when jay hits the ball. Period. Fuck this nonsense about being “advanced”. It’s a bad smokescreen for a personality conflict.

this is an org that has turned a likely 95-win team

into a team on pace to win 88 games. We’ve brought the two worst payers in baseball into our organization, given them de facto starting jobs, traded a potential MVP-caliber bat for a league-average pitcher, and let pitchers hit something like 5 times with RISP in extra inning games.

I’m not really giving their opinions a lot of weight, at this point.

Sometimes that happens.....

Sometimes good teams underachieve. And sometimes there is not good answer as to why. Unfortunately, STL took injuries to the few guys we couldn’t replace. We could probably have replaced one of Lohse/Penny getting hurt. But not both. We really needed Freese to be “average” at 3B this year. He was until he got hurt. I can’t think of anybody that would have expected Lopez to be as bad as he has been, at the plate or in the field.

If you want to blame somebody for not having better “plan B’s”, blame Mo. He is the one that spent so much on Lohse. I don’t care if Matty H. plays the final 2 years of his contract in a wheelchair, that contract won’t be half as bad as Lohse’s. The team is handcuffed financially. All we can do is sign a bunch of guys that will play for next to nothing. That, and use our farm, which we have.

by Stanley1 on Aug 29, 2010 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

well, yes

it is correct to blame the GM, when the team underachieves. And players get hurt. Thanks for that insight.

Just because his baseball philosophy/viewpoint differs from the vast majority here doesn’t mean he should be banned.

Just because he thinks its reasonable to trust the Cardinals powers that be doesn’t make him necessarily irrational.

lead Round Rock, 11-2, this afternoon, and thanks to Omaha’s comeback, the Iowa Cubs are losing, 7-4. If those scores hold up, the Redbirds will be a half-game in first.

There is one seriously great pennant race going on in AAA, and while the 2010 St. Louis Cardinals are not worthy of the great fans who cheer them on, Memphis certainly is.

I say we all make a pilgrimage to Memphis and bask in a little sunshine.

In the final four games

of the AAA regular season, Memphis goes to Iowa in what likely will determine the division title.

Cardinals AAA team vs. Cubs AAA team.
Now THAT should be a great series of games to watch.

I swear, FS Midwest should cancel the Cardinals and air that series. And make the Cardinals sit there and watch what a hustling, never-say-die team that can sustain a rally looks like.

He’d tell us that if we didn’t start moving our asses he was going to sit us and put in the 5th graders and let them play, if we were going to lose, do it right.

he’s mad at Colby for trying to hit home runs and yet sends him up today in about as obvious a ‘we need an HR’ situation as there is. This after determining he was not well enough to start.

I look at the short list of centerfielders

with better rate stats than Rasmus, and then listen to the way he’s talked about, and I can’t remember a wider disconnect. I assumed the kid has been much more seriously hurt than they thought, which is pretty much par for the course with any injury we have anymore it seems. Then you hear talk about umpire matchups and comparisons to Jay and realize this is probably something completely different.

I realize that there is an alternate universe of Cardinals fans

(see above, the commenters on the mother ship who think Miles is a little bit of heaven, and fans who do the wave at the park), but, believe me, all the Cardinals fans are not gonna hate Rasmus. We will probably watch his success on another team with great nostalgia and sadness.

bit of an exagerration

but i can see some people saying how rasmus doesn’t try or have work ethic and yes he really needs to cut down on the home runs…

also referring to non-VEB fans as well

by stlcardsfan4 on Aug 29, 2010 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think anyone wants him to "cut down on home runs".

It’s reasonable to want him to “cut down on trying to hit home runs”, however.

Zips ROS predicts that he’s a .780 OPS player going forward- clearly we should hope for something more than that out of him. He’s had a mere .269 BA with a .341 BABIP, so it’s not unreasonable to expect him to do some things other than swing for the fences in BP.

Just like they don't go on two 8 game and one 7 game losing streak during a season?

No

In so many ways, it seems the team put their eggs in the 2009-2011 baskets. We’ve had a steal of a deal in Pujols and Wainwright’s contract. That won’t continue for long.

No matter who comes next, this organization is going to have their hands full soon. That makes them crapping the bed now so much more bitter to me.

But the wilderness found him out early, and had taken vengeance for the fantastic invasion. I think it had whispered to him things about himself which he did not know, things of which he had no conception till he took counsel with this great solitude—and the whisper had proved irresistibly fascinating. It echoed loudly within him because he was hollow at the core.”
