Game 122 Overflow Thread - A Tour

There's a glass elevator in that picture somewhere.

Tour Guide: Do you know what this is?

VEBer: By gum, it's a win streak!

Tour Guide: WRONG! It's the most amazing, fabulous, sensational win streak in the whole world.

VEBer: What's so fab about it?

Tour Guide: This little piece of game is a three-game win streak.

Dan McLaughlin: [Burp]

Tour Guide: No Bud.  But I haven't quite got it right yet.

I love the arch.

When I’m in StL for long periods of time, I often forget about it. And then every once in a while I look up and am all Holy Crap, we have a massive, beautiful sculpture in our skyline, and that just rocks.

Joe Posnanski writes a bout Adam Wainwright, i feel happy.
There are others who probably deserve to be higher on the list considering their entire careers — Terry Steinbach, Carlos Lee, John Montefusco to name just three — but I’ll go with Wainwright here because he’s SO good and he shows every sign of being this good for years to come.

I have written here often about how so many people overrate pitcher victories, which have become a badly outdated statistic that every year (as starters throw fewer and fewer innings) shows less and less about a pitcher’s true value. That said, I do think Adam Wainwright would have the right to feel a bit cheated by the new era. He led the league in victories last year and finished third in the Cy Young voting. And this year, he is again leading the league in victories (and ERA) and the general feeling among the stats community seems to be that Roy Halladay is having an even better year (well, you know, Halladay’s xFIP is better, and according to Fangraphs Halladay’s 6.4 WAR is markedly better than Wainwright’s 5.0).

From my experience. Wainwright is a terrific guy and quite advanced in his understanding of the game. But, let’s face it, if he leads the league in victories again and loses the Cy Young again, well, you couldn’t blame the guy if he went all Jack Morris on us.

The Wainwright home run, incidentally, came in his 17th appearance — he came in to relieve Tyler Johnson, and he homered off Noah Lowry in San Francisco. He has hit five home runs in his career now — that’s already tied for eighth among active players. The most home runs for an active pitcher? You should know: Carlos Zambrano, and it’s not even close. He has 20. Livan Hernandez is second with nine.

No, not only ERA

but I think it shouldnt just be ignored. If a pitcher has consistently shown he can outperform his FIP, I think there is a legitimate argument that there are reproducible skills present that FIP ignores.

FIP should still be used in conjunction, though.

by gdm426 on Aug 23, 2010 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

Which is why you shouldn’t disparage people who want to look at FIP, which completely takes defense out of the equation. Yes it takes out some BABIP skill, but that skill is usally dwarfed by K, BB and HR skill (and it’s also correlated with it, if you get me).

by vivaelpujols on Aug 23, 2010 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I just like taking all of the information together, in context.

The more, the better. Sure there will be some noise, but I feel like Id rather mistakenly attribute a little performance to actual luck/defense than the other way around.

Just because most pitchers behave a certain way doesn’t mean they all do; there are always outliers. It would really suck to be one and not get credit for it.

That said, if a pitcher has a radical split between his FIP and ERA, or his FIP’s and ERA’s usually match pretty well, Id go with FIP as more reliable.

by ViperLjs on Aug 23, 2010 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay, but you are missing my point
Sure there will be some noise, but I feel like Id rather mistakenly attribute a little performance to actual luck/defense than the other way around.

It’s the other way around. By using ERA instead of FIP, you are mistakenly attributing a lot of a performance to defense/luck and a little to actual skill. Not to mention that ERA will always be biased in favor of pitchers with good defenses.

by vivaelpujols on Aug 23, 2010 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I must ahve worded that poorly

I meant Id rather err on the side of getting most of the skill into the equation and allowing some noise in as a result.

I think we’re mostly on the same page here; I just don’t think that using ONLY FIP is the best idea. I like to use all the numbers in conjunction to form a more complete picture.

by ViperLjs on Aug 23, 2010 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

But I would weight FIP a lot more than ERA because I think ERA – FIP includes a lot more noise than skill.

by ViperLjs on Aug 23, 2010 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

ERA isn't perfect, but I sort of split the average between ERA and FIP when evaluating what 'has' been done so far in a season.

I use xFIP moreso for looking at future performance. If you split the difference between ERA and FIP, how does the NL stack up? I’d assume Halladay still first, but not by much?

by Voxx on Aug 23, 2010 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Slightly, yes.

But while I love FIP, I don’t simply want to look at ‘only’ FIP when evaluating the Cy. There are small things that a pitcher can do to influence performance that can’t be measured by FIP, Does it have a large benefit? Well, no. But it’s still there, even if tiny.

by Voxx on Aug 23, 2010 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

But those small things are dwarfed by random noise in the ERA – FIP split.

by vivaelpujols on Aug 23, 2010 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably. 75/25 split? I dunno.

It’s just something I do as a rough measurement for myself. I don’t have a vote where I’d take things seriously to determine things. I just like to add a little bit of ERA factor into there, for the ‘small things’ even if it is defense dependant.

I don't understand that feeling

Halladay’s ERA this year is 2.16, which is a good 1 run lower than it was the past few years in Toronto. So he’s improved more than expected by moving to the NL.

He’s on pace for like 270 innings this year, and with a 2.16 ERA in a hitters park. Waino is on pace for like 245 innings this year, with a 2.06 ERA in a pitchers park.

I don’t really see how you could justify Wainwright over Halladay without using W/L record.

Let’s do ERA – league ERA / 9 * Innings pitched. So basically Runs Above Average.

Waino: 45.5
Halladay: 47.5.

If you add in park adjustments, Halladay has at least a 5 run lead over Wainwright, which is pretty large. Not to mention that yeah, Wainwright’s BABIP is much lower than Halladay’s implying that the Cardinals have played better defense for him than the Phillies have for Halladay.

cardinals are -2.5 runs defensively by UZR on the year

Phillies, -9.2. So about 7 runs difference between the teams. Not really significant, when you consider that AW/Halladay have pitched about 20% of their teams’ innings.

Atlanta is actually -16.2, FWIW, so Hudson should theoretically be hurt by his defense, not helped.

Doesn't maintaing a super-high BABIP for almost 200 at-bats

move his true-talent BABIP projection upward somewhat? Maybe he is capable of maintaining something like a .330-.340 figure.

by ViperLjs on Aug 23, 2010 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

New rule

you can’t talk about BABIP without talking about the player’s batted ball profile

Silly humans, this world is for robots.

by azruavatar on Aug 23, 2010 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Well his batted ball profile would suggest around a .300-.310 currently

given league averages. I would adjust that upwards somewhat based on his speed. Obviously his current level isn’t sustainable, but he did have a .348 figure at Memphis this year with a similar batted ball profile. He’s had a few high numbers in the past, too.

by ViperLjs on Aug 23, 2010 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I also wonder about the batted ball classifications

it can make a big difference to have a ball be classified as a fly when it was more a of a “fliner” type

Sportswriter to the effect of “yes, I heard phillips say it. I didn’t report it because I thought it was said on background (I.e., off the record).” That made sense b/c the story didn’t get picked up initially except by one outlet.

"We were men - flesh and blood - and we played baseball in the sunshine. We hit doubles off the wall, slid hard into second base. We had fights, and we made love. We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives." My Dad’s Uncle Steve Tomko was a chef and the Leland Hotel in Springfield many years back. According to a plaque from the City of Springfield (which someone in my family is currently in possession of) he was one of the co-orginators of the dish. My dad actually has the original recipe for the cheese sauce that they used.

i love his album: not afraid of course, love the way you lie is the probably the best song, 25 to life is the perfect song for hard breakups, talking to myself shows eminem’s mental battle and his doubts, no love is an incredible remix, space bound is one of my favorites although less well known…

i linked the lyrics because that’s the only way you can like his rap songs over others… anyway, im pretty positive im not gonna get a great response, because it probably would have already been mentioned… lastly, anybody hate rap, but like eminem cause i hear that a lot?

I like rap but I've never been a big eminem fan

If you like more intellectually/interior-minded rap you should check out either Lupe Fiasco album or Danny!‘s “And I Love H.E.R.” I’m also a big Kanye West fan, but he grates on people a little more (for obvious reasons.)

the ones that come to mind:

“I live in a cocoon, opposite of cancun” and juxtaposing his whining with getting his cock sucked in soundtrack to my life.

Also that line where he goes “metaphor for my liiife mayneee.” I know it’s a metaphor cudi, I went to eighth grade too. And all that interstitial garbage with Common talking about him like he’s a God-king of overblown teenage sadness.

Basically I think his musical skills are commensurate with his ambitions, but his writing absolutely isn’t, so he should get some help or tone down his scope.

His new song is great, though, I like that he’s willing to risk releasing a single that sounds like Weezer to kick off his new album.

“And I tried to piece the puzzle of the universe
Split an eighth of shrooms just so I could see the universe”
and
“Only things that calm me down, pussy and some Cali trees
And I get both, never truly satisfied
I am happy, that’s just the saddest lie” ?(which is pretty clever actually)

yeh “nobody gave a fuck, but when its all said and done, my cock’s been sucked” – that’s definitely a head-scratcher

by stlcardsfan4 on Aug 24, 2010 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I just think he's really funny

He makes the sickest rhymes and his lines make no sense taken in conjunction with eachother, but they are so good. For example:

see i didn't like his no ceilings album

because it felt rushed, lyrics were sacrificed for speed… i mean its clever and his voice gives him an advantage, but its not my thing

most of his original songs are good beats and i guess the problem is they get old fast while i don’t really get tired of eminem songs because of the lyrics… i like drake better when it comes to good beats and so-so lyrics

yeah that's pretty good

I like the use of weird words (like tobogganing). My favorite little string of lil wayne lyrics are the begining to run this town:

C-A-R-T-E-R put the beat in ER.
I’m colder than BR

Watch me like D-V-D-V-C-R

I'm pretty good at understanding and comparing the aesthetic qualities of most pop music

but a lot of hip-hop is lost on me. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the stuff, it’s just that a lot of the “seminal” works don’t really click with me. Public Enemy sounds dated to me, for example.

I'm not a huge fan

A lot of the songs sound too much alike (soft woman’s melodic voice in the chorus, hard rap in the versus), and Eminem isn’t really funny in this one, which I thought was a strong point for the rest of his albums. I also thought the beats/tunes in the songs were kinda meh. I definitely thought it was one of his weaker albums.

Then again I was a huge fan of early Eminem and 90’s rap in general, so maybe I just have different taste.

by vivaelpujols on Aug 24, 2010 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm with you on that.

I’ve listened to like 6 tracks now and the production is really weak. It’s interesting to compare this to 2001: The Chronic, which I’ve been listening to nonstop the last two weeks. That’s got to be up there for greatest rap albums ever. Great beats, great raps, Dre, Snoop and Eminem on one album…jesus.

by mattisnotfrench on Aug 24, 2010 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah it was awesome

he's changed his style a bit i think

i mean, i think i know what you mean… i love crack a bottle, the way i am, cleaning out my closet, ass like that…. but his newer album has better lyrics i’d say

he tried the funny in relapse and it didn’t come out well… not a fan of 3 AM

by stlcardsfan4 on Aug 24, 2010 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree about the lyrics

But even those seem a bit rehashed. I still think it’s a pretty good album, just because Eminem is so good, but I liked it a lot less than his others.

Pujols has homered in 10 of his last 19 games. Also, Ohlendorf had “soreness and tightness in his right shoulder”, to get MRI on Tuesday. "It got worse with each pitch. I didn’t feel great warming up but I thought I could pitch," he said. "Hopefully it’s in the muscle and not the shoulder."

so,

lohse didn’t look great, but i think it was a really promising outing. last time, he looked solid for 3 innings and then imploded. this time, he looked solid for the most part for 5 innings and they pulled him before he imploded. should be a good outing for his confidence, too. i’ll be interested to see how his next start goes, but i’m still not ready to call him “back.” he’ll get another fairly easy opponent next time and i think if he can get on a roll at the same time he starts getting that command back, he’ll be a nice asset for the stretch

I think this must be wrong

ESPN, MLB Network, etc. are all talking about how Votto is the frontrunner for the MVP and is a great triple crown candidate. To be a candidate, he’d have to be leading in at least 2 of the 3 categories, right?

defy, cards, defy. hey logic --- you suck.

it helps that Albert plays in a bandbox

and votto hits in a pitchers park, right?

to be a candidate

really i’d say he just has to be in the top three of all categories. He’s a Candidate much like Ron Paul was last election. His name is there. But he doesn’t have a realistic shot.
