Your bad feeling probably doesn’t mean anything. Unless, of course, you sometimes call the police and tell them where dead bodies can be found…

You don’t, do you?

Did you read that review of GRRM?

Curious what you thought.

Silly humans, this world is for robots.

by azruavatar on Aug 22, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I did

and I thought it was a very good explanation for how Martin has become bogged down in the details, especially concerning Westeros being divided politically (setting up Dany’s return, etc). That could have been handled in the first book or two, not four or five.

I also thought that the fact that the reviewer was coming to the series after reading some of the other “brutal/killing characters” authors was interesting. For me, Martin was first author I read to do so. It was interesting to see how different the series felt to someone who had read Martin’s predecessors first. I think it actually hurt the reviewers enjoyment of the books, but it made me wonder if I’d enjoy Martin as much now that I’ve fallen completely for Erikson and have read some of the other new wave authors.

Finally, I think he undersold the fantasy aspects in the review. There’s still quite a bit of “magic” in Westeros—Melisandre, Direwolves, etc.—so I think he was a little bit unfair or just off on that point. It’s most certainly not all politics in Westeros. I also think it’s fair to say I like the series more than the reviewer did, but I don’t have the same devotion to it as some people (in other words, it’s not at the very top of my list)

Thanks for sharing that link. I’ve read a couple of his other reviews to get some ideas for the next series to dive into. Very handy!

No, of course not

I could see him being a .280/.345/.450 guy though. If he could play solid defense in a corner he’d be more than adequate.

by redbirdnation8206 on Aug 22, 2010 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Just go with .280/.350/.450

.350 and .800 OPS look so much better. :)

by stlfan on Aug 22, 2010 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

That's probably his upside

If I had to guess I’d say .270/.330/.410 though, which is a useful player given his defense, though probably not an everyday starter.

I counted only six swinging strikes

Jaime sometimes posts some really insane swinging strike numbers, but 6/80 doesn’t seem especially high. The Giants seem to be swinging a shitload… which honestly doesn’t seem like a bad idea when Garcia is throwing almost nothing but strikes. (58 strikes in 80 pitches = 72.5%)

They still had Molina then. Since they sent Molina out he's been mostly catching.

They were also having trouble in the outfield, so Huff moved there for a while (IIRC).

I do wonder if Posey is going to stick at C long-term, though.

Panda will be at 1B within a year or two, barring a massive change in his conditioning.

Problem is, his bat so far this year doesn’t really play at first. Last year? Certainly.

He’s pretty athletic for a guy with his girth, but he’ll have to be moved sooner or later. He can get away with it for a few years here because he’s so young.

I think Posey is their long term catcher.

He has a very strong arm, though it tends to sail to right a little at times.

They’ll probably just give him days off at first base when Sanchez is pitching in particular, since he prefers Whiteside. Keeps his legs fresh(er).

there is a decreased incidence of flying chest bumps, it's true

but IMO it’s better to say they don’t have as much fun as last year, which was really above average in the hijinx. this year they’re definitely making time to inject fun into the proceedings. it’s just not as crazy and/or not out in public. a handshake for every occasion and dance parties in the clubhouse.

and also it’s hard to have fun without winning streaks.

No

Any number of teams have had 2 of the 3 awards in a season, but none with all 3. The MVP dates back to 1931, the Rookie of the Year to 1949, and the Cy Young to 1956. There was only one Cy Young winner for MLB from ’56 thru ’66. In 1962, Tom Tresh won the Rookie of the Year for the Yankees, Mickey Mantle won the MVP, and either Whitey Ford or Ralph Terry had at least an outside shot at the AL Cy Young, had it been awarded one per league that year (although Aguirre of the Tigers had an excellent season, as well). As it was, the top 4 vote-getters for the Cy Young were all NLers.

a triple crown is pretty much the only way right?

because at this point, it would be hard to argue how one is really much more valuable than the other. in the minds of voters, with it this close, making the playoffs would be the deciding factor, but if either wins the TC, i dont see how he doesnt also get the mvp.

cmon fangraphs

their most recent article starts off promising, and then abruptly stops before any real analysis is done. for example, why is carl crawford given such different scores by +/- and uzr? it seems as though the rest of the article was accidentally left off. maybe my expectations are too high, but the analysis there is often very superficial. also, many of the commenters are intolerable, so maybe that makes me biased.
