I wouldn't say that...

It’s basically the McDonald’s of St. Louis style pizza.

It’s not bad if you are in the mood, but it’s pretty much the bottom rung. That being Cecil Whitaker’s, which is the Arby’s of St. Louis style pizza.

if Albert goes 4-for-4 with a HR and 3 RBIs, he’ll be at .321/32/90 RBIs.

If Joey Votto goes 0-for-3, Albert will lead the Triple Crown.

Lopez and Winn are part time players, in an ideal situation. IE, Freese not getting hurt. They’re on short term deals, giving us the year to develop the young talent in the minors. They were decent contracts, in my mind.

A 4.5 ERA pitcher is not worth a middle-of-the line-up everyday starter who fields like a gold glover.

Westbrook is a bad player compared to Ludwick.

Westbrook was good 5 years ago, now he’s way past his prime, too expensive, and has gotten 1 victory for us in 20 days that he’s been here (unless we somehow win this game. He won’t get the W, but he’ll at least have started the game that we won).

by boilertiger on Aug 20, 2010 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't mean it like that.

I’m just saying, Ludwick helped us win more games than Westbrook. We could send Blake out there every fifth day and get the same results as if Westbrook were pitching, and we could at least Ludwick hitting every other day. Jon Jay will cool off (like Chris Duncan) and Mozeliak is going to feel like an idiot for making him the starting right fielder.

Blaming Westbrook, or the Westbrook acquisation is stupid and short sighted. The guy has pitched incredibly well, more than we could ask from him.

by Voxx on Aug 20, 2010 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

You're being quite irrational.

Westbrook has been exceptional since we obtained him. Has he gotten BABIP’d a bit? Yes. Don’t place the blame for the losses in his starts on him. Merely poor offensive output in those starts.

Ludwick was a salary shed at a position we had capable players to replace him, where Westbrook was a position of need.

He's fallen back a little

but now that I look at it, Omar Infante is the real threat – he’s hitting 344, but he only has 322 plate appearances with 40 games to go. He needs 502 PAs to qualify, so if he played every game he’d need to average 4.5 PAs. He bats leadoff and so far Braves leadoff hitters have averaged 4.75 plate appearances per game. With Chipper out he’s not going to get many off days, though if they run away with the East he might sit a time or two.

if anyone has watched both the cards and cinc play these past 5, 6 games its obv weve had worse luck and cincy has had some better breaks…it just makes these wins/losses even worse

by guillermozeliak on Aug 21, 2010 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

It's not luck, it's the players...

Look at the lineup tonight.

6 out of the 9 hitters were hitting under .250. I know batting average is overated, but none of these guys walk or hit for power, either.

The ’55 Senators fielded a better starting lineup (except our 1B and LF are a lot, lot better, though their 1B/LF were pretty good).

Then look at the pitching side. We traded for our starter because our #5 guy wasn’t good enough. So what does Tony do? Put in the guy that wasn’t good enough to be the #5 starter into the game immediately after the starter is lifted.

What is the logic in that?

And then we put in a guy who shouldn’t even be on this team (MacDougal). Can anyone tell me what purpose he serves, other than to give up runs?

by DiscoJer on Aug 21, 2010 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions

i annoyed as hell too. we cant catch a fucking break and they keep lucking out in every game

I thought they would struggle out west but they just keep catching all these teams at the right time. When is this misery gonna end? They have to loose, or blow a lead eventually right? We have got to win a game soon! Someone tell me it will be over soon!

by mick311 on Aug 21, 2010 1:04 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

What gets me though...

is that he doesn’t seem to be trying to improve. He just dances like crazy at the plate. How is he ever going to be even an awful hitter doing that?

Al related a story about how McGwire has been trying to calm him down and not move so much, but he resists.

I like McGwire, but the players don’t listen to him, maybe we should get a coach they will? I was afraid that he would perhaps be seen more as a buddy than an authority figure.

by DiscoJer on Aug 21, 2010 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions

there is so much that is inaccurate about this.

first of all, he was hitting at an acceptable level by doing exactly that. nobody likes it, and by accounts, he doesn’t like it, but that’s how he hit at his career levels.

second of all, he spent over half a season trying to change everything about his approach. this resulted in the worst at-bats of not just his career, but probably his whole life (thanks, over-stalkerish media accounts.)

third of all, this all came about because he was listening to McGwire. by all accounts, and I mean I haven’t heard anything different — every player is about killing themselves trying to do better for Big Mac. and that is probably part of the problem.

Lick that shoulder—you're in the doghouse now.

cardfa124...i too am watching the game

w/ 1 out…blake on third ausmus gets strike three looking on a low and away pitch…unbelievable

also i was at the sf,stl game tonight…and lego got effed on that second strike…and i even checked gd…even though i dont trust that

and also why did TLR go out in the 8th to talkk to the ump? i thought it might have been bc there was rain coming or something….. just one pitch was thrown by our reliever (mcdougal)…it was strike one…if anyone knows id like to hear

by guillermozeliak on Aug 21, 2010 12:54 AM EDT reply actions

if you are still checking

I forget if it was KTRS or Rick and Al, but at the time one of them said it had to do with something left on (lights) around the centerfield backdrop that was causing a visual disturbance for the hitter.
And the ump told Tony because the home field manager is apparently supposed to tell the electro-guys to knock it off and/or be more careful in the future.
Not confirming that, just saying what they said.

Eh, I still don't buy it

Let’s just compare us to the Reds real quick.

Cardinals OPS: .747
Reds OPS: .773

So the Reds have a .026 OPS advantage over us on the offensive side of the ball. But if you look at run prevention…

Cardinals OPS against: .698
Reds OPS against: .724

The difference in pitching/defense exactly matches the difference in offense between the two clubs. Unless you want to argue that 3/4 of a season of team “clutch” performance is anything other than luck (and there are many virtual cabinets of counter evidence) than you have to accept that the Cardinals have played just as well as the Reds this year. The difference in the standings is just noise.

That ignores the fact that the Cardinals are underforming their preseason projections while the Reds are overperofmring. Now this likely means the preseason projections were partially incorrect, but not completely. You can’t just take single season numbers at face value.

I’m sick of everyone here being on the Red’s tip, and dissing the Cards. Show some goddamn pride.

the answer is not in these stats

the answer is offensive efficiency
we saw it last night in 4 hits for 1 run
i bet we lead the league in lobsters/hit
lobsters from risp
stuff like that, which doesn’t take into account inability to bunt, etc

I may be in a rut, but at least I know where I'm going

Agree, this is too much gloom and doom with 6 weeks left.

However, the obvious flaw in stats is that they do not always account for consistency – the dips from multiple bad offensive showings get smoothed out by a few blowout performances. I still blame McGwire for a lot of this inconsistency. And, situational stats are probably not great.

For all the starter woes, we have had some stout pitching and that should be encouraging for the stretch.

Where were we at this point in 2006?

by Mr. Wilson on Aug 21, 2010 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

the main problem is that there's nothing in the current stats

that suggests we’re likely to make up 4.5 games on the Reds through the end of the season, whether the 4.5 games difference was originally the result of luck or noise or whatever.

I guess we’ll just have to hope that we’ll luck into it.

by Willie McGee's Twin on Aug 21, 2010 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

current stats != most likely future stats

You still have to weigh preseason expectations and those heavily favor the Cardinals.

you know, it's almost an accomplishment for the Cardinals to be this

mediocre. They have the undisputed best player in baseball and legit triple crown threat, the perhaps odds-on Cy, another one of the most dominating pitchers in the league, the best rookie pitcher in the game not named Strausburg, an elite left fielder….I mean, to be this mediocre it’s almost as if they’d have to fill out the rest of the roster with broken down retreads, leprous castaways, and talentless gritmasters. Oh, wait….

That being said, I’m gonna stick around. The people who leave the game early when the team is down 5 or 6 going into the eighth are the ones who beat the traffic and avoid further disappointment 99 times out of 100. But that one time, they miss out on one hell of a show.

I don't remember how far behind we were

but I once saw the Cards score 10 runs in one inning. At old Crosley, vs the Reds. And I don’t think there was a home run involved. The rally went on so long it made me giddy, all the more delicious because the sulking Reds’ fans (whom I grew up despising, especially the necrotic Waite Hoyt) had to take it.
Unfortunately, that was roughly some 45 years ago.

Cardinals are going to win today....

Reds are gonna loose. I can feel it. This mess of a week is almost over but the Cardinals are gonna salvage a game or two in the standings.

I didnt think this team was capable of losing 5/6 games in a row with this pitching staff. The funny thing is we have gotten quality starts in 4 of the last 5 games and lost all of them…we never even lead in any of those games did we?

I have a new mindset. Im just gonna pretend none of those games even happened. Im going all positive, Carps gonna come out mad and shut down the Giants, when Colby returns (hopefully today) he is gonna go on one of his tears. Albert will hit 2 more homeruns this weekend to avoid hitting 400 in Pittsburgh, and neither will be a solo shot!

We have more games left than any other team and a soft schedule upcoming, im telling you it starts now, this team is gonna wake up.
