woohoo! New thread

I feel like a thirteen year old girl with mood swings right now. On one hand, Cardinals just traded one of my favorite players for a so-so pitcher, on the other hand, that so-so pitcher means I’m not watching Hawksworth pitch tonight.

On one hand, I’m glad we swept the pirates. On the other, different fingers, I mean, the pirates are now facing the Reds.

this thread is all Aaron Mile's fault.

On one hand,

the Reds have three remaining games against Pittsburgh. On the other, we have nine games remaining against Pittsburgh.

Holy hell, nine?

I knew we hadn’t played Pittsburgh much this season, but nine meetings still remain? The schedule does weird things, sometimes.

the bad news is

we’re facing the stros, who play good against us, while the already-hot reds will be taking on the team we just swept.

Fun with Sample Sizes!

Since Ludwick left, the Cardinals are averaging 10 runs per game.

Clearly, Ludwick was holding the offense back.

Astros Coming to Town Makes Me Think of Oswalt Stuff

As it turns out the Stros may have gotten more for Oswalt than any of the teams with ace pitchers to trade. Card fans were all over the Stros saying that there was no way that they would get the type of return that they were requesting. It is to early to tell, but it looks like a heck of a trade in the favor of the Stros. They get a good looking young lefty, their starting 1B, and another prospect. Wallace may not be what Card fans thought he was going to be, and the prospect may not pan out, but they may not have to because Oswalt has looked not so good and the young lefty was great in his first outing. The Stros look to be smarter than what everyone was saying, while the Cards do not look so good after the Ludwick trade. Very hard to swallow, particuarily with Wallace at 1B for the Stros tonight.

by Warcard on Aug 2, 2010 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

Well, the initial Oswalt trade did not include Wallace.

It included Goce, who was then flipped for Wallace, which was a decent trade. But, however, smart the Astros may have looked after landing Wallace, they then completed the Berkman trade, which Ken Tremendous sums up nicely on his Twitter page:

Astros paying Berkman’s salary is like a homeless guy getting robbed by a billionaire and throwing in a free shoeshine.
“We want Berkman.” “Okay.” “But you pay him.” “Okay.” “In return, we’ll give you a pile of cat vomit.” “Okay.” “Now gimme your car.” “Okay.”
“I will trade you negative four million dollars for Lance Berkman.” “Deal!”
“We want Montero for Berkman.” “How about we give you nothing and you give us four million dollars and Berkman.” “Even better!”

Oh, and then they go and sign the overperforming Brett Myers to an extension, which I guess isn’t as bad as the Lohse deal, but is still awful. They should have sold high on him this trade deadline since they likely won’t be competitive while he is on the team.

Details

per the Astros official site:

Myers will make $7 million in 2011, $11 million in ‘12 and $10 million in ’13 if the option is picked up. There’s a $3 million buyout if the option doesn’t vest, and Myers will receive a $2 million signing bonus that supersedes the $2 million buyout he had for ’11 in his previous contract.

Greene to the DL drama

I don’t see the story on the main Cardinals page but on the Cardinals mobile site there is a story detailing Tony’s frustration with Greene. Apparently after they had decided to send down Greene, Greene’s agent called Moz and said that Greene needed to go to the DL. Sorry I don’t know how to link the story.

Boog time to move over and make room in that doghouse for Tyler. I have to think this won’t do much for Tyler’s long term favor in Tony’s eyes.

by OCCardsFan on Aug 2, 2010 12:44 PM EDT reply actions

Well if they are sending him down to just DL him

I don’t blame him. Huge pay difference for him. If he is DLed on major league roster vs minor league

by FlimtotheFlam on Aug 2, 2010 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I can see why Greene would want to do it...

I can also see why Tony would be upset. Greene has been telling him he’s good to play ph, and would be able to start yesterday. Until he found out he was going onto the DL. Can’t have it both ways.

As far as sending Greene down over Miles. WTF Tony/Mo. (of course, with him only being available sparingly I could understand wanting to have a go who can go everyday.)

He should have been DL’d after he hurt the wrist. Bottom line.

this thread is all Aaron Mile's fault.

by Evilfrog on Aug 2, 2010 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

These types of situations are tough.

With injuries such as these, you have to wonder what the training staff is telling Greene and TLR (as well as what Greene is telling the training staff). I would imagine that Greene had to be doing some sort of grip strength test to gauge if he could hit. Nonetheless, it seems like TLR gripes when players complain about mild injuries and then gripes when players belatedly go on the DL.

As an aside, in the last 7 days, Greene hit .000 but had a .600 OBP.

by d-dee on Aug 2, 2010 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok found a way to link it

Here is the article

And here are the key quotes:

“That was upsetting,” La Russa said after the game. "I actually told him last night, ‘Coming to the park, there is a chance you will play.’ You know, I wasn’t sure if I would play Felipe [Lopez] or who would be at second base. ‘So come to the park ready to play.’ ‘OK’ [Greene said].

“We had a long meeting to discuss it,” La Russa continued. “It took us a while to figure, because it is a complicated thing, and it went against him. Next thing we know, I guess he called his agent, the agent called [general manager John Mozeliak] and says he has a bad wrist. [Greene] said — the quote I got — was he didn’t want to make a lot of it with the trainers because he didn’t want to get sent down. Well, I mean, that is not really fair.”

by OCCardsFan on Aug 2, 2010 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

Stupid move by Greene Tea. Be honest about your injury, ya douche! I can see why he did it (I’d be worried about staying in the majors, too), but you set yourself up for bad situations like this one.

by MaytheForschbewithyou on Aug 2, 2010 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Greene looks really bad on this

Not only underreporting the injury but not needing the DL until they send him down. Greene — “What’s that you say Tony, I need to go to Memphis? Hold on, I’ve got my agent on the phone and he needs to talk to Mo for a minute.”
Pause, phone ringing.
TLR — “Johnny you’re telling me Tyler needs to go on the DL? Well he is sitting right here. He didn’t mention it to me.”

by OCCardsFan on Aug 2, 2010 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions

i think it's the opposite

Greene was apparently playing through pain, trying to make it in the big leagues, trying to help the big league team win games. If the MLB team decided they don’t need him at his current ability level, he needs to get his ability level back to a point where he can help the big league team, and the question becomes “how best to do that”.

if the injury is going to heal faster on the DL than by playing in the minors, he needs to go to the DL. There’s no reason for him to play injured in the minors.

by SleepyCA on Aug 2, 2010 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

The issue was that

They didn’t realize he was still in pain, so they were sending him down to play healthy in the minors, not to play hurt. He didn’t tell them he was playing through pain, otherwise they surely would have DL’d him instead of sending him down.

probably McDougal for Craig

on Lohse, I think the Cards may decide to give him more than one more rehab start. They could start Soup one more game (against either Florida or Cincy) and give Lohse two more rehad starts and have him come back between Aug. 20-24. That also provides protection almost to September if another starter gets hurt. Then, I suppose Soup will go.

That's good stuff.

I think that many of the more statistically inclined here already use a broader base for analysis rather than focusing on one aspect and calling a player’s results luck.

BABIP, HR/FB, etc can be used as a club, or (along with other stats) as a scalpel. I think a lot of the folks here are doing it right.

I'm out of champagna. How about some 7-Up and Mad Dog 20/20?

by The Continental on Aug 2, 2010 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the strongest argument is that BABIP and HR/FB are not only very luck infiltrated

But also correlated with K and BB rates over the long run. As Derek said there are simply no pitchers with elite K:BB rates who have very high BABIP’s in the long run, although the converse appears to be a bit more likeily.

LARRY BOROWSKY (Founder of Viva El Birdos and editor of "Maple Street Press Cardinals Annual")

The Cards paid a much steeper price for Westbrook than I thought they’d have to. But would I have been happier if the cost had been Jon Jay, Allen Craig, or an equivalent prospect? No way. Ludwick was going to be dealt after 2010 anyway to conserve payroll, and some combination of Jay/Craig was going to replace him. The Cardinals simply accelerated that transition by two months. It’s a big gamble, and if it backfires it might cost them the division. But the trade’s statement of priorities is correct – i.e., young, cheap talent (Jay/Craig) over pricey veterans (Luddy). That’s the cost of affording Albert Pujols’ next contract.

You could also argue that the St. Louis lineup needs a left-handed table-setter (i.e. Jay) more than it needs another right-handed RBI bat (Luddy). If Jay can maintain a decent OBP, they’ll score enough runs.

I understand it improves the club

but it’s bad positioning to bring your weaknesses to the bargaining table like Mo did in this trade. It allows stronger GMs to take advantage of you. I don’t know if Mo is capable of seeing past the pressures and negotiating full market value for his players. The fact that this trade occurred right at the deadline makes this seem even more like a last resort compromise. And don’t tell me we got full market value for Luddy. And DON’T tell me we couldn’t have offered a better prospect than Kluber.

JEFF GORDON

Good deal – IF the Cards re-sign Westbrook to an extension after he settles in with Dave Duncan. The Cards have a rotation hole to fill past this season. Given the lack of internal candidates for that spot, investment in a veteran appears necessary. The Cards are way more likely to replace Ludwick’s outfield offense cheaply than fill the pitching hole cheaply.

Does Gordo just sit down and type without thinking?

I agree wholeheartedly. The upgrade Holliday brought was significantly greater than the upgrade Myers brings. I don’t see him competing for the 2011 rotation. Without him, there really isn’t much else in the way of internal options (unless, you see Hawksworth as a viable candidate for next year’s rotation). With RF, we have Jay and Craig who are ready to contribute right now.

After Greene had been told of his demotion, his agent told the Cardinals that Greene had been playing with a more severe hand injury that originally advertised.

Instead of Memphis, Greene was transferred to the 15-day disabled list with a deep bruise on his right hand. The infielder will go for an MRI today to determine the extent of the damage.

“The hand wasn’t really getting any better,” said Greene, who was hit July 17 and has since played through the pain. “Get it rest. Get it better. I should have said something right away. It was something that was there. It wasn’t 100 percent. I was playing and hoping that it would get better with time. It just didn’t.”

The Cardinals have overtaken the Red Sox as the ballclub that is the best source of local television ratings in baseball. Last week, the Sports Business Journal reported that the Cardinals have seen a 41.6 percent increase in local ratings from last year, and their 9.7 rating on Fox Sports Midwest topped the majors, ahead of Minnesota’s 7.85 and Philadelphia’s 7.2. Boston, the annual leader, experienced a 36 percent plummet and dropped to fifth behind the Cardinals, Twins, Phillies and Cincinnati Reds (6.52).

Schumaker's power drain has been disconcerting.

He’s morphing into a Miles type of hitter. Slugging percentages by year:

2007: .458
2008: .406
2009: .393
2010: .335

This year, Freese is slugging only .404, but he never slugged lower than .489 in AAA (and over .500 every other year), so some expect more power to show itself. Az is not one of those people, however, if my memory serves me correctly.

Yes. It does.

I keep wondering how people who get into positions of power in the MLB do it, and why it’s so difficult for people more qualifies to break in.

Connections? Sure, but there’s something more. Charisma? The appearance of intelligence?

Idea for a FanPost (or front pager)

I don’t have time to do this, but maybe someone does (or one of the main writers will like the idea). I’d like to see an update on all the prospects/pseudo-prospects we’ve traded or lost (in any of a variety of ways) over the last few years and how they’re doing with their new teams, what their prospect stock looks like these days, etc. We all know a lot of them, I’m sure (Walrus NOOOO!), but it would be cool to see a master list.

Some names off the top of my head: Brett Wallace, Chris Perez, Jess Todd, Brians Barton and Barden, Ben Jukich, Mark Worrell, Luke Gregerson

by mojowo11 on Aug 2, 2010 4:24 PM EDT reply actions

I was just looking up Perez

on Yahoo sports, since he’s now the Indians closer.

by sdrone on Aug 2, 2010 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

quick analysis

wallace – obvious
perez – cleveland closer
todd – was in majors at one point, still in bigs i think (cle.)
barton – playing for newark bears
barden – last i heard, got cut by FLA
jukich – don’t know
worrell – cut by padres last i knew
gregerson – padres reliever

Albert Pujols, who is batting .424 (14 for 33) with two homers and 10 RBIs versus Houston this season, is 14 for 28 with two home runs lifetime against Myers. Matt Holliday is 7 for 19 with two homers versus the Astros starter

We get some e-mails from PR types about stuff over the course of the season

and most of it gets ignored. I really liked this one though (for obvious reasons) and thought I’d share it.

Birdies in the Future for the Red Birds’ Big Swinger

King Albert may hold the keys to the Cardinals’ offense, but he’ll be holding Colby Rasmus’ clubs on the golf course. Rasmus’ king-sized homerun, surrendered by Kyle Davies in the fourth inning on July 26, measured 483 feet, earned him a brand new set of Callaway Diablo Edge golf clubs. Rasmus will be receiving those clubs during a special on-field pregame presentation tonight, Mon. Aug. 2.

For the duration of the season, Callaway is rewarding any professional baseball player who hits a homerun over 470 feet with a full set of Diablo Edge clubs. Why? Because ballplayers that embody the attitude and skill that it takes to drive a ball 470 feet and longer are exactly the type that would want to play the new Diablo Edge clubs, which are designed to blast the ball longer and straighter than ever before.

Rasmus joins Jason Heyward, Adam Dunn, and Josh Hamilton as one of four professional baseball players to hit his way to a set of new Diablo Edge Clubs.

I’m pretty sure the Cardinals have a large golfing contingent on their roster. I find the idea of Colby on the greens a bit humorous but maybe Adam or someone will take him out for some swings now.

Silly humans, this world is for robots.

Hmm, would Colby outdrive Pujols I wonder?

Although, I doubt neither of them would touch golf, as I imagine it can really mess up your baseball swing.
