the reds fans seem to think rolen was just super bloody pissed and was going to beat carp to shit, that douchebag, but that is in my mind untrue because scotty totally had the opportunity and didn’t do anything but hug him and after the fight they were still hugging and rolen patted carp on the back.

my third edition is in japan with girlfriendup

but according to this online copy of the whiteless, public domain version you add the ‘s “no matter the final consonant”—"Exceptions are the possessives of ancient proper names in -es and -is, the possessive Jesus’, and such forms as for conscience’ sake, for righteousness’ sake. But such forms as Achilles’ heel, Moses’ laws, Isis’ temple are commonly replaced…"

by DanUpBaby on Aug 10, 2010 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

yep

Form the singular possessive of nouns ending in s with ‘s: Mr. Jones’s dog, Maris’s foibles, James’s dissertation. The only exceptions are ancient proper nouns: Jesus’ disciples.

However, you form the plural possessive of nouns by adding an apostrophe after the “s”: the dogs’ bones, the balloons’ strings, the lollipops’ centers.

In the case of the plural possessive of nouns ending in s — as in, say, the family Jones and their collective beach house — you add an es and an apostrophe at the end: the Joneses’ beach house, the Moraleses’ car.

It's just silly to worry about the batting order...

If the Reds score 3 or fewer runs or 5 or more runs the game is over. If they score exactly four, we probably won’t want our reliever who was just shelled to pitch another inning anyway. Then Craig could simply pinch hit.

Fire La Russa!

i would agree not to use the double switch in this situation

but I wouldn’t say it was because Tony doesn’t like Colby. If he thought Craig was better on defense he would have came in to start the inning.

It’s pretty likely you’re not coming to bat again. Why do you need to double switch at all? Shouldn’t you have faith that your closer will get the job done? Even if not, why would you double switch out a better defensive AND offensive outfielder for an inferior outfielder?

"Very accomplished bunter" - Rick Horton about Aaron Miles

and that’s fine. I wouldn’t have used the double switch. But there is a difference in saying," why are double switching?" and “OMG, Tony took out Colby again! One of them has to be off the team next year.”

standard double switch

last outfielder to make an out goes to the bench. Idea is to put the pitchers spot in the order the farthest. Franklin would be due up 8th that way.

RiverRat, about the recording of the game

this will get involved, do you care to do it?

the easiest way is to connect a camcoder to the dvr and just record while you play it like you normally would. then you can just throw it onto your computer

also, there was someone here that was ripping a game onto their PC from a DVR a few days back, you want me to ask how he did it?

by vico on Aug 10, 2010 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

My take on what started the brawl.

Oftentimes, players coming into the batter’s box will politely tap the umpire and catcher with the bat as a form of a “hello” or something of that ilk. I believe that when Phillips did that to Yadi (and Yadi promptly kicked Phillips’ bat away from his shin guard), Yadi was essentially saying, “No good will from you, ‘whiny bitch’.” Phillips says something along the lines of “fine man, I still hate you guys.” Molina then gets more of an attitude and there ya go.

TRL

Jaime pitched strong game we’re all impressed about how he maintained his composure given the emotions; one those games in his career where the team reached down deep gutting it out; our club did a terrific job of putting that stuff aside and just playing baseball; these guys make a commitment that they will play the game right, unfortunately sometimes you’ll deal with stuff like that, you handle it and keep going;
TLR pissed pissed pissed wants to talk baseball not the first inning
we’re taking many relentless atbats, everyone’s working their ab and even though we had some chases we are doing a good job; april and may we were 500+; june july we were under 500; now it’s the next two months; there’s no reason to not be a tough club on the road
it’s the worst nine innings i can remember EVER, probably vomitted a few times
i know our guys, this is not the first time we’ve been challenged; we have a few guys that are very tough characters but we will never back down; couldn’t be more proud, we competed, never backed out
i’m sure dusty suffered much watching the game too; the umps had to do sth, so it was probably a smart move to toss us out
what is a cather supposed to do; he said don’t touch me and he didn’t, what did the catcher do wrong?
skip got cramps; larue has slight concussion, facial tears, so does carp’s body – he’s got some scrape marks on his back
watching the brawl was terrible, too many good players on both sides

Yadi didn’t like the tapping on the shin. Benches clear. TLR & Dusty get into it. Dusty says something to Carp. Rolen SLAMS Carp into backstop. Cueto kicks people to defend himself. Rolen and Carp wrestle each other to the ground.

I learned from Scott Rolen. I learned from Jim Edmonds. I learned from some really good veterans over there. If it came from one of them, then I would respect it. But I can’t respect something like that from him.”

Carpenter said he wouldn’t concern himself with Phillips.

“I met him at the All-Star Game and he seemed like a pretty good guy,” Carpenter said. “Like I said last night, hate is a pretty strong word. If he wants to hate us, he can hate us. I really don’t care. It’s not important to me either way. We compete the way we compete. We play the way we play. I wonder if he’s asked what Scott or Jimmy or Russ Springer or [Miguel] Cairo think. I think Rolen was trying to jump on a grenade.

He knew that if Carp and Dusty kept exchanging words like they were it would get ugly. Unfortunately he acted too quickly and made the situation worse.

I'm pretty sure that Rolen knew that Carp was the most likely to pull a shiv out of his shoe

Meanwhile, the Cardinals had the great silencer standing on the mound for the opener. His name is Carpenter, and, to quote James Brown, papa don't take no mess.

wiki

Tetanus, also called lockjaw, is a medical condition characterized by a prolonged contraction of skeletal muscle fibers. The primary symptoms are caused by tetanospasmin, a neurotoxin produced by the Gram-positive, obligate anaerobic bacterium Clostridium tetani. Infection generally occurs through wound contamination and often involves a cut or deep puncture wound. As the infection progresses, muscle spasms develop in the jaw (thus the name “lockjaw”) and elsewhere in the body. Infection can be prevented by proper immunization and by post-exposure prophylaxis.

“I turn around and I’ve got Cueto kicking me in the back with his spikes,” Carpenter said. “It’s super unprofessional. I don’t know where he learned how to fight.”

Cut to Jaime on the mound. Who then, out of nowhere, starts running toward home plate.
Dan- “Look at this. Right away. Molina. And Phillips. Benches clear”
Yadi and Phillips jawing. The shin-tap has already transpired.
Rolen gets into frame just as Jaime does. Think he was expecting trouble? He wasn’t on deck at this point.
One of the Reds, plus Rolen, grab Yadi immediately. They pull Yadi well away.
Janish grabs Phillips, then Lopez is in there. Not sure if he’s peacemaking or not.
Bullpens empty (so you know it’s serious) and there is general milling about. Cueto strolls in wearing his jacket.
Rolen still has Yadi. Phillips is in the middle of the milling about.

Janish pulls Phillips out

Tony and Dusty are jawing now.
And here’s where everything goes to hell.
Dusty is yellin’ and pointin’, looks like at Carp.
Suppan, LaRue, and Rolen have Carp surrounded, along with an ump.
Whatever Dusty said set him off, and that was the ignition for the push to the net.

Cueto tries to get behind Carp. I guess to push him back the other way (?)

Wow, Big Mac is right in there near Carp.
Cueto slips back around, but is pinned in by other Reds coming in.
There are fans on the other side pushing against the pack (mostly Cueto) rather than getting the hell out of there.

And then Cueto freaks out and starts kicking anything he can reach.

Meanwhile, Rolen, Soup, and OMG, is that Reyes(?) pull Carp out of there and bring him down.
…momentarily. Carp stands up and sheds his honor guard, glaring menacingly.
At then end, Rolen and Carp are together. Carp gives Rolen a little head shake. (Like, dude, we’re good, but WTF was that?)

Upon repeated viewings

I can see why. When Carp and Dusty started jawin at each other, Rolen makes a quick move, a very quick move, in Carp’s direction and ends up pushing him back into the screen. It was Dusty and Carp jawin that started the nasty part of the brawl, but Rolen was a big part of that too. Instead of just getting between them, he moved toward Carp and pushed the pile to the screen.

Also, when Carp first yelled at Dusty, one of the umps immediately turned toward Carp and started in on him. Depending on how it’s written up, Carp could actually be fined if what he said was so “inflammatory” to have escalated the whole thing. If he is sanctioned, then, IMO, Scotty should be too.

Note that I’m not necessarily saying Carp did anything that SHOULD call for penalties, just that, based on the umps reaction to his shouting at Dusty, it’s not beyond belief that if may happen.

In the Reds’ version of the broadcast, it looks like around the 1:30 mark you can definitely see some blood on LaRue’s face. That’s not good, because even with his 2nd inning blast aside, by the end of the game Molina just looked miserable, you could see him really dropping to his knees between a lot of pitches.

From their first-inning scrum to the final out, the St. Louis Cardinals sent a message: Don’t demean the defending champs. Not without expecting a fight.
Yadier Molina jawed with Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips in the first inning Tuesday night, sparking a benches-clearing fight, and the Cardinals followed their catcher’s lead to an 8-4 victory that moved St. Louis back into first place in the NL Central.
When it was over, there were cuts and scrapes and a sense that the Cardinals had gotten the better of it all.

I’m late for the party, I’m afraid. Boy, I was just reviewing the brawl video and I have some opinions. First thing said, this infuriates me. Cueto is a bitch and I hope he gets fucking suspended and fined and DFA’d and whatever. I never wish other players bad, but this guy can suck it. It’s a shame LaRue ended up so hurt because of such a coward. Carpenter and Yadier are both ballers. Balls of steel, team players. It’s people like them that make you win championships. And, I gotta say, it looks like Skip got into the action and was the one that got in the way of Cueto’s kicks and took some for Carpenter. Real balls, again. I guess this Cardinal team is made up of real men, huh Phillips?

I am sure the Walrus can play RF...

Is Larue hurt badly? I missed that? If so, hope that tacks a few more games on to Cueto's suspension.

Unfortunately yes,

Out of the Cardinals site:

Jason LaRue suffered what Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called a slight concussion during a benches-clearing incident in Tuesday night’s 8-4 win over the Reds at Great American Ball Park.

Carpenter said. “Nobody was doing anything. I wasn’t throwing any punches. Nobody was throwing any punches. We had some guy kicking me in the back who ends up kicking my backup catcher and splits his face open. When you see [LaRue], you’ll see he could have done some real damage. [Cueto] got him in the side of the eye, got him in his nose, got him in his face. Totally unprofessional. Unbelievable. I haven’t seen anything like that.”

I am sure the Walrus can play RF...

Thanks, I found it. I have very unreliable Internet service. Just hope that Carp is all right.

Larue truly took one for the team today. I’ve been caustic about him, but you have to see him as being “stand up” in this one. Laughable that Cueto proffers a “trapped rat” defense.

They probably would need to run Yadi, if anyone else was tossed. If Tony let the umps know that LaRue was beat up, they may have been more inclined to let it go.

the more i watch it

the less i think carp and rolen were ever going after each other, carp was yelling at someone else (dusty or someone else) and when rolen quickly stepped in to calm him down everyone flipped out and it got out of hand, they were calmly talking to one another literally 15 seconds later

by LukeMP1186 on Aug 11, 2010 2:52 AM EDT reply actions

rolen being the leader of their clubhouse

should know not to make any sudden movements in a situation like that

i saw it frame by frame from several angles and from what i could gather, Carp was yelling, on the side were Cueto and Gomes and at some point those two or just Gomes jump at Carp, Rolen rushes in to go in between them and i think everyone thought he was charging and it all went to hell from there

the Washington Post's take is amusing

After saying some bad things about the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips tried to make nice with Cards catcher Yadier Molina, giving him a little love tap with the bat as he stepped into the batter’s box in the first inning of the Cards-Reds game Tuesday night in Cincinnati. Molina was having none of it and a brawl erupted, resulting in the ejection of managers Tony LaRussa (a plus for the Cardinals) and Dusty Baker.

“He talked bad about my team, he talked bad about me,” Molina said on a postgame interview with Fox Sports Midwest. “Don’t talk bad and come up and say ‘hi’ to me. That’s stupid.”
What, exactly, were the fightin’ words? Well, here you go, from Rob Neyer and Hal McCoy :

“I’d play against these guys with one leg. We have to beat these guys. I hate the Cardinals. All they do is [bleep] and moan about everything, all of them, they’re little [same bleep, plural], all of ’em. I really hate the Cardinals. Compared to the Cardinals, I love the Chicago Cubs. Let me make this clear: I hate the Cardinals.”

With their 8-4 victory Tuesday night, the Cards moved ahead of the Reds (if only by percentage points) in the battle for first place in the National League Central Division.

St. Louis has, let’s say “possessed” the Reds this season: they’re 9-5 against Cincy and have won the first two games of the series. Game 3 is this afternoon. Oooh, mama.

What I noticed about the fight video.....

…when it gets really ugly in the corner and the net – Rolen helps get Carp outta there and stays with him, knowing full well who the moost dangerous guy on the field is. Scotty is a big guy, but Carp has 2-3 inches on him and a HUGE temper. He did the same with Yadi early on before things got ugly, but when the cow pies hit the fan it seems he went looking for Carp to try and keep him from luggaging someone. Scotty knows his cards!

as soon as Dusty says / answers “FUCK YOU”, Carp starts moving real fast, Scotty goes in to intercept, and all of a sudden the Reds swarm in and the Cards react / trying to hold Carp back. What's really sad, for me at least

Is that I really liked Brandon Phillips as a player, just based on his talent. I had no idea he was kind of an ass. He’s having his best season since 2007 (5.2 WAR that year, 3.5 already this year via Fangraphs) and it’s not like he was any slouch in the years in between—2.9 WAR each for 2008 and 2009. I don’t generally dislike a player just because he’s good and plays for a rival. But now I feel like I have to dislike Phillips, since he has proven he’s a stupid hothead.

I went over with an olive branch and they have been pretty civil

also agreeing that some of this stuff was starting to cross the line

I did as well.

I have fun at the other sb nation sites and didn’t want to permanently burn that bridge. Honestly, it’s fun to be caring this much about a game in August with the Reds.

Exactly.

It sucks to admit it, but it’s been hard pressed for the NL Central to feel relevant in recent years. The Cubs have a $140m payroll that they can’t break .500 with and have only managed one solid year in the last decade. The Astros put together a couple decent years half a decade back and then fell off the planet.

I like this — I love it. I don’t think this Reds team is like the Astros or Cubs, I think they are here to stay. They have some great young talent mixed with some classy vets (unlike our ‘grit’). I may abhor Cueto and Phillips, but beyond them, there are a ton of players on the Reds I respect. I don’t like seeing a brawl get nasty, but I love thinking that the next few years will have some NL Central series that are worth getting excited over.

Also: If Votto had a beer belly he could do the best Babe Ruth impersonation ever.

Arroyo, I have to add him in the list of players I don't like.

He’s just a smug bastard.

Our “grit” is classy, he’s just not very good.

Yes, I think this Red’s team may be around for a while, unless Jocketty starts trading it away like he did us.

I wasn't planning on going to another game this year

However, I feel obligated to go to the first game of the upcoming series at Busch. I’ll proudly be wearing the best shirt that rinawear comes up with. I say we all get a shirt and find a section to sit in.

I'm trying to come up with a shirt idea for rinawear

Something along the lines of Carpenter questioning where Cueto learned to fight, since they are already working on a Cueto kicks like a girl shirt.

Too much hostility.

It’s the Reds for crying out loud…we didn’t care that they existed until like yesterday.

Feel the love up North!

I must say being a Cardinal fan up in Mich., its finally nice to get some much needed Cardinal national love/publicity through all this. Its too bad it took a fight to get it. Usually I have to wait thru all the other scores, highlights, & bottom screen feeders to get Cardinal news. Last night, lead story on ESPN, MLB, Fox & Espn Radio, & morning talk shows! SWEET. Last night was the biggest win of the season for the Cards. Lets keep it going!
