speed has a way of increasing BABIP
what is his BABIP in the minors?
Miles, in at third for his defense
.330 in MiLB; he could probably keep a .330ish babip in the majors i suppose, but it seems more likely for him to be at .300-.315.
there’s a ton of luck in his current line, though.

And the minors have much higher BABIPs than MLB
My WAG is that MLE is more .300-.310
Not afraid to nitpick
Not really
Basically every player has a higher BABIP in the minors than in the majors.
Not afraid to nitpick
I understand
I just wanted to get some sort of feel what his average would be without all this luck.
That's sustainable, right?
on a side note, apparently fangraphs has finally acknowledged his existence.

Is it possible that Carp and Rolen
actually escalated the brawl? I couldn’t tell from the video feed. The take on it so far was that Rolen was acting as a peacemaker, and he was to Molina….
oh they definitely did
but i think it was accidental. carp was going to go after dusty because dusty started talking shit at carp and tlr, and rolen grabbed him.

this is my take as well.
the reds fans seem to think rolen was just super bloody pissed and was going to beat carp to shit, that douchebag, but that is in my mind untrue because scotty totally had the opportunity and didn’t do anything but hug him and after the fight they were still hugging and rolen patted carp on the back.
there wasn’t a fight between them in any case.

my third edition is in japan with girlfriendup
but according to this online copy of the whiteless, public domain version you add the ‘s “no matter the final consonant”—"Exceptions are the possessives of ancient proper names in -es and -is, the possessive Jesus’, and such forms as for conscience’ sake, for righteousness’ sake. But such forms as Achilles’ heel, Moses’ laws, Isis’ temple are commonly replaced…"
yep
Form the singular possessive of nouns ending in s with ‘s: Mr. Jones’s dog, Maris’s foibles, James’s dissertation. The only exceptions are ancient proper nouns: Jesus’ disciples.
However, you form the plural possessive of nouns by adding an apostrophe after the “s”: the dogs’ bones, the balloons’ strings, the lollipops’ centers.
In the case of the plural possessive of nouns ending in s — as in, say, the family Jones and their collective beach house — you add an es and an apostrophe at the end: the Joneses’ beach house, the Moraleses’ car.

Since when...
does any manager, especially La Russa, worry about the batting order when you have a four run lead going into the bottom of the ninth? He must think that Craig for Rasmus does not degrade the defense.
Fire La Russa!

the 1980s when they started using the bullpen this way. If we had any of the infielders left it could have been them (though no one’s position would put them that far away.) Also could have done LaRue for Yadi.

I am pleasantly pleased, thankyouverymuch, but not with Johnny Mo!
by mattyfrommo on Aug 10, 2010 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions
It's just silly to worry about the batting order...
If the Reds score 3 or fewer runs or 5 or more runs the game is over. If they score exactly four, we probably won’t want our reliever who was just shelled to pitch another inning anyway. Then Craig could simply pinch hit.
Fire La Russa!
i would agree not to use the double switch in this situation
but I wouldn’t say it was because Tony doesn’t like Colby. If he thought Craig was better on defense he would have came in to start the inning.
Miles, in at third for his defense
It's just because TLR. That's all.
Tony doesn’t think Jay is a better center fielder than Colby. Stop it.
"I told myself from the very beginning: 'If he's going to throw a shutout, then he's going to tie,'" Wainwright said. "He was not going to beat me today."
Regardless
Why are you playing for the 10th inning when you have a 4 run lead in the 9th and you are dramatically downgrading your defense?
Not afraid to nitpick
AND your offense!
"Very accomplished bunter" - Rick Horton about Aaron Miles
by jd is legend on Aug 10, 2010 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly...
La Russa thinks Craig is equal to, or better than, Rasmus defensively. That means he’s either A) succumbing to dementia, or B)has an irrational dislike of the kid.
Either way he needs to go.
Fire La Russa!
not at all
otherwise Craig would be starting over Rasmus a lot more. You are not thinking logical about this.
Miles, in at third for his defense
still doubtfull
if Jay or Holliday made the last out they would have been the ones out in the double switch.
Miles, in at third for his defense
This is a festival of irrationality...
This is the biggest series of the year. What rest is Rasmus going to get from playing 8 innings instead of 9? And why in the world would you downgrade your defense just in case the Reds score exactly four runs?
Fire La Russa!
You're the road team, you're winning by four in the bottom of the ninth
It’s pretty likely you’re not coming to bat again. Why do you need to double switch at all? Shouldn’t you have faith that your closer will get the job done? Even if not, why would you double switch out a better defensive AND offensive outfielder for an inferior outfielder?
"Very accomplished bunter" - Rick Horton about Aaron Miles
by jd is legend on Aug 10, 2010 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions
ok
and that’s fine. I wouldn’t have used the double switch. But there is a difference in saying," why are double switching?" and “OMG, Tony took out Colby again! One of them has to be off the team next year.”
Miles, in at third for his defense
I said that and obviously it's a little premature to make such pronouncements...
but seriously – switching out Rasmus for Craig repeatedly while leading in the ninth is such a strange thing to do… I’m really having a hard time coming up with any rational explanation.
Fire La Russa!
it really is just because the last few times Colby has been the last outfielder
to make an out.
Counting today Rasmus has been pulled 10 times
Ludwick 9 times
and Holliday 14 times.
Lately it has been an OFer coming out instead of a IFer because lack of infield depth.
Miles, in at third for his defense
You are wasting your breath frog.

I'm amazed that noone at RR seems to have a problem with the conduct of Phillips.
If a Cardinal made those comments, I’d be embarrassed. That kind of thing is wholly unprofessional and childish and reflects badly on him, the team, and the organization.
Not to mention being totally stupid and bound to provide great bulletin board fodder to motivate the other team.
"I told myself from the very beginning: 'If he's going to throw a shutout, then he's going to tie,'" Wainwright said. "He was not going to beat me today."

"I think everybody is ready to go and we're excited about this series." -- Carp
My take on what started the brawl.
Oftentimes, players coming into the batter’s box will politely tap the umpire and catcher with the bat as a form of a “hello” or something of that ilk. I believe that when Phillips did that to Yadi (and Yadi promptly kicked Phillips’ bat away from his shin guard), Yadi was essentially saying, “No good will from you, ‘whiny bitch’.” Phillips says something along the lines of “fine man, I still hate you guys.” Molina then gets more of an attitude and there ya go.

Jaime pitched strong game we’re all impressed about how he maintained his composure given the emotions; one those games in his career where the team reached down deep gutting it out; our club did a terrific job of putting that stuff aside and just playing baseball; these guys make a commitment that they will play the game right, unfortunately sometimes you’ll deal with stuff like that, you handle it and keep going;
TLR pissed pissed pissed wants to talk baseball not the first inning
we’re taking many relentless atbats, everyone’s working their ab and even though we had some chases we are doing a good job; april and may we were 500+; june july we were under 500; now it’s the next two months; there’s no reason to not be a tough club on the road
it’s the worst nine innings i can remember EVER, probably vomitted a few times
i know our guys, this is not the first time we’ve been challenged; we have a few guys that are very tough characters but we will never back down; couldn’t be more proud, we competed, never backed out
i’m sure dusty suffered much watching the game too; the umps had to do sth, so it was probably a smart move to toss us out
what is a cather supposed to do; he said don’t touch me and he didn’t, what did the catcher do wrong?
skip got cramps; larue has slight concussion, facial tears, so does carp’s body – he’s got some scrape marks on his back
watching the brawl was terrible, too many good players on both sides

MLB Network's take
Yadi didn’t like the tapping on the shin. Benches clear. TLR & Dusty get into it. Dusty says something to Carp. Rolen SLAMS Carp into backstop. Cueto kicks people to defend himself. Rolen and Carp wrestle each other to the ground.
Not sure I believe all of that, but it seems that that it’s a little more biased towards what I think happened (as opposed to what ESPN’s reporting.)

But I can’t respect something like that from him.”

“I met him at the All-Star Game and he seemed like a pretty good guy,” Carpenter said. “Like I said last night, hate is a pretty strong word. If he wants to hate us, he can hate us. wiki
Tetanus, also called lockjaw, is a medical condition characterized by a prolonged contraction of skeletal muscle fibers. The primary symptoms are caused by tetanospasmin, a neurotoxin produced by the Gram-positive, obligate anaerobic bacterium Clostridium tetani. Infection generally occurs through wound contamination and often involves a cut or deep puncture wound. As the infection progresses, muscle spasms develop in the jaw (thus the name “lockjaw”) and elsewhere in the body. Infection can be prevented by proper immunization and by post-exposure prophylaxis.

Upon repeated viewings
I can see why. When Carp and Dusty started jawin at each other, Rolen makes a quick move, a very quick move, in Carp’s direction and ends up pushing him back into the screen. It was Dusty and Carp jawin that started the nasty part of the brawl, but Rolen was a big part of that too. Instead of just getting between them, he moved toward Carp and pushed the pile to the screen.
Also, when Carp first yelled at Dusty, one of the umps immediately turned toward Carp and started in on him. Depending on how it’s written up, Carp could actually be fined if what he said was so “inflammatory” to have escalated the whole thing. If he is sanctioned, then, IMO, Scotty should be too.
Note that I’m not necessarily saying Carp did anything that SHOULD call for penalties, just that, based on the umps reaction to his shouting at Dusty, it’s not beyond belief that if may happen.

More worried about LaRue.
In the Reds’ version of the broadcast, it looks like around the 1:30 mark you can definitely see some blood on LaRue’s face. That’s not good, because even with his 2nd inning blast aside, by the end of the game Molina just looked miserable, you could see him really dropping to his knees between a lot of pitches.
right after the kiss cam incident
Carp looked like he noticed that LaRue wasn’t tracking very well, did a concussion check.

Yahoo takes our side
From their first-inning scrum to the final out, the St. Louis Cardinals sent a message: Don’t demean the defending champs. Not without expecting a fight.
Yadier Molina jawed with Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips in the first inning Tuesday night, sparking a benches-clearing fight, and the Cardinals followed their catcher’s lead to an 8-4 victory that moved St. Louis back into first place in the NL Central.
When it was over, there were cuts and scrapes and a sense that the Cardinals had gotten the better of it all.

definitely; love seeing the P-D not mincing words
Also dug this from Bernie….
So in his desperate, pathetic attempt to get noticed, Phillips became the perfect foil for the Cardinals. But the lightning rod became a divining rod instead. Because of large-mouth Phillips, the Cardinals found something that had been missing for much of the season.
He used the verb "bitch" to say that we complain.
You’ve got parents and kids reading this stuff, they just want to be careful and not get into trouble.
And for the record, the Post-Dispatch didn’t edit anything when they quoted Phillips.
"I turn around and I’ve got Cueto kicking me in the back with his spikes. It’s super unprofessional. I don’t know where he learned how to fight."
-Chris Carpenter commenting on a bench-clearing fight with the Reds, 8/10/10
He used both.
First he said that all we do is “bitch and moan.” Here, he uses it as a verb. It’s saying that we complain. Then, he uses the term “little bitches.” Here, it is a noun. However, because of what he said earlier, he basically means that we whine and complain about everything.

Hey guys,
I’m late for the party, I’m afraid. Boy, I was just reviewing the brawl video and I have some opinions. First thing said, this infuriates me. Cueto is a bitch and I hope he gets fucking suspended and fined and DFA’d and whatever. I never wish other players bad, but this guy can suck it. It’s a shame LaRue ended up so hurt because of such a coward. Carpenter and Yadier are both ballers. Balls of steel, team players. It’s people like them that make you win championships. And, I gotta say, it looks like Skip got into the action and was the one that got in the way of Cueto’s kicks and took some for Carpenter. Real balls, again. I guess this Cardinal team is made up of real men, huh Phillips?
I am sure the Walrus can play RF...
Is Larue hurt badly? I missed that? If so, hope that tacks a few more games on to Cueto's suspension.

Glad to see the Cards end well. Any other flareups?
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
Unfortunately yes,
Out of the Cardinals site:
Jason LaRue suffered what Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called a slight concussion during a benches-clearing incident in Tuesday night’s 8-4 win over the Reds at Great American Ball Park.
Carpenter said. “Nobody was doing anything. I wasn’t throwing any punches. Nobody was throwing any punches. We had some guy kicking me in the back who ends up kicking my backup catcher and splits his face open. When you see [LaRue], you’ll see he could have done some real damage. [Cueto] got him in the side of the eye, got him in his nose, got him in his face. Totally unprofessional. Unbelievable. I haven’t seen anything like that.”
I am sure the Walrus can play RF...
Thanks, I found it. I have very unreliable Internet service. Just hope that Carp is all right.
Larue truly took one for the team today. I’ve been caustic about him, but you have to see him as being “stand up” in this one. Laughable that Cueto proffers a “trapped rat” defense.
Unreal. . .

if molina was ejected, larue with a concussion would’ve had to play.

Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
the more i watch it
the less i think carp and rolen were ever going after each other, carp was yelling at someone else (dusty or someone else) and when rolen quickly stepped in to calm him down everyone flipped out and it got out of hand, they were calmly talking to one another literally 15 seconds later
rolen being the leader of their clubhouse
should know not to make any sudden movements in a situation like that
i saw it frame by frame from several angles and from what i could gather, Carp was yelling, on the side were Cueto and Gomes and at some point those two or just Gomes jump at Carp, Rolen rushes in to go in between them and i think everyone thought he was charging and it all went to hell from there
..i miss ludriguez-wick..
Intentions were good. Others' perception of said intentions was bad

got 130
was lucky on some two-fer names, like Thomas & Johnson.
I thought of Mike Schmidt with about 1:30….got Ripken with about :45. Derp.
me neither
I was racking my brain for Jim Rice, and couldn’t come up with it. Also, who the hell is Greg Luzinski?
I did the worst around the time I was born (late 70s)….
i got mcgriff..just cause i loved him
and i didnt get adrian gonzlalez bc for some reason i thought his name was alex so i got a 95..that woulda made 96
i didnt know about the last name thing…ill try it later after my memory lapses and see how i do…only result that i remembered not getting was jay buhner
that was cool

Got a lot but missed some dumb ones: Alfonso Soriano? Also, Piazza was never in the top 5?
"What exactly is that thing? A pessimism meter?" - Bruce McCurdy
i was thinking the same exact thing with piazza
i was like damn, not only did i think of him but he wasnt in there
others that i was suprised that werent in the top 5 that i guessed were:
ken caminiti, piazza, mo vaughn, sheffield, any alomar :),
nota bene…130…is a damn good score
after some hints, and retaking a few more times with the last name trick i got a 140..so if anyone on here can score above that they are pretty crazy but my original was 95 with first names…id advise reposting this and telling peolple to uncheck “show me what i missed” if they want to try again

Scotty’s serious expression does him no favors. and he probably shouldn’t have started yelling ‘whoa whoa whoa’.
what I really want to see is whether Carp said something first, or Dusty did, because on tape Dusty just suddenly points at Carp… and it’s unclear who instigated.

I was a little surprised by Phillips trying to act like nothing happened.
Not surprised by Molina’s reaction and the ensuing melee.
Will be very surprised if Cueto doesn’t get a 2-3 start suspension. (Heh, it might be worth it to DL LaRue just try to force the league office into it.)
>While Albert Pujols batting, This Signature picked off second. Three out.
the Washington Post's take is amusing
After saying some bad things about the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips tried to make nice with Cards catcher Yadier Molina, giving him a little love tap with the bat as he stepped into the batter’s box in the first inning of the Cards-Reds game Tuesday night in Cincinnati. Molina was having none of it and a brawl erupted, resulting in the ejection of managers Tony LaRussa (a plus for the Cardinals) and Dusty Baker.
“He talked bad about my team, he talked bad about me,” Molina said on a postgame interview with Fox Sports Midwest. “Don’t talk bad and come up and say ‘hi’ to me. That’s stupid.”
What, exactly, were the fightin’ words? Well, here you go, from Rob Neyer and Hal McCoy :“I’d play against these guys with one leg. We have to beat these guys. I hate the Cardinals. All they do is [bleep] and moan about everything, all of them, they’re little [same bleep, plural], all of ’em. I really hate the Cardinals. Compared to the Cardinals, I love the Chicago Cubs. Let me make this clear: I hate the Cardinals.”
With their 8-4 victory Tuesday night, the Cards moved ahead of the Reds (if only by percentage points) in the battle for first place in the National League Central Division.
St. Louis has, let’s say “possessed” the Reds this season: they’re 9-5 against Cincy and have won the first two games of the series. Game 3 is this afternoon. Oooh, mama.

What I noticed about the fight video.....
…when it gets really ugly in the corner and the net – Rolen helps get Carp outta there and stays with him, knowing full well who the moost dangerous guy on the field is. Scotty is a big guy, but Carp has 2-3 inches on him and a HUGE temper. He did the same with Yadi early on before things got ugly, but when the cow pies hit the fan it seems he went looking for Carp to try and keep him from luggaging someone. Scotty knows his cards!

On Brandon Phillips
I didn’t get a chance to post here last night, so I thought I would just submit my feelings:
Anyone who condones Brandon Phillips actions is either a blind Cincy fanboy, or a person who lacks any cognitive ability whatsoever. What started this wasn’t Brandon tapping Yadi on the leg the first time, it was when he did it the second time, which every network seems to forget about. You can clearly see Phillips instigated the entire situation. Yadi kicked the bat away, essentially saying "Don’t do that after what you said," Phillips proceeded to greet the umpire, and then tap Yadi on the leg again.
Brandon Phillips is an attention seeker and when you’re hitting a career .268 with a 317 OBP and were essentially traded to the Reds for a bag of balls and a Fungo bat, I imagine you have to find other ways to get noticed. Notice how you never hear those comments come out of the mouth of a Jeter or Pujols, it’s because they don’t need to, their stats bring all the attention they deserve.
I may be from Saint Louis, but if one of our players had said what Phillips did, I would never give them a standing O; I’d be embarrassed to be a Cardinals fan. Also, where’s this personal army Phillips says he has of people who feel the same way. Last time I checked, players would kill to play in Saint Louis a-la Roy Oswalt.
The Reds announcers were incredibly biased about last night, talking about Carpenter’s "whining at his own player and now on the field." Chris Carpenter is a competitor who plays under the mindset of old pitchers like Gibson.
Also, to wrap it up, as much as I hate players who flash when they hit a homerun, Yadi’s impersonation of Phillips when he ran the bases has earned him a lifetime membership to the BAMF club in my opinion.

What's really sad, for me at least
Is that I really liked Brandon Phillips as a player, just based on his talent. I had no idea he was kind of an ass. He’s having his best season since 2007 (5.2 WAR that year, 3.5 already this year via Fangraphs) and it’s not like he was any slouch in the years in between—2.9 WAR each for 2008 and 2009. I don’t generally dislike a player just because he’s good and plays for a rival. But now I feel like I have to dislike Phillips, since he has proven he’s a stupid hothead.

by CarpIsMyManCrush on Aug 11, 2010 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions
It would have been one thing if Phillips was trying to apologize or something
but you’d think he’d say something to that effect if he were. I haven’t seen any evidence that he was either.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
He wasn't going to
In fact he said the next day after asked about his comments:
"I said what I said and the Cardinals can say what they said. They can say all they want about what I said, I don’t care. I’ve said all I’ve got to say. All I want to do is win, beat those guys and win."

…when they said today was the rubber game – the rubber game is not the 3rd game all the time, it only happens when the 1st two games are split and the series can go either way – hence the ‘rubber’. Stoopid Reds announcers…

Exactly.
It sucks to admit it, but it’s been hard pressed for the NL Central to feel relevant in recent years. The Cubs have a $140m payroll that they can’t break .500 with and have only managed one solid year in the last decade. The Astros put together a couple decent years half a decade back and then fell off the planet.
I like this — I love it. I don’t think this Reds team is like the Astros or Cubs, I think they are here to stay. They have some great young talent mixed with some classy vets (unlike our ‘grit’). I may abhor Cueto and Phillips, but beyond them, there are a ton of players on the Reds I respect. I don’t like seeing a brawl get nasty, but I love thinking that the next few years will have some NL Central series that are worth getting excited over.
Also: If Votto had a beer belly he could do the best Babe Ruth impersonation ever.
Arroyo, I have to add him in the list of players I don't like.
He’s just a smug bastard.
Our “grit” is classy, he’s just not very good.
Yes, I think this Red’s team may be around for a while, unless Jocketty starts trading it away like he did us.

However, I feel obligated to go to the first game of the upcoming series at Busch. I’ll proudly be wearing the best shirt that rinawear comes up with. I say we all get a shirt and find a section to sit in.

Feel the love up North!
I must say being a Cardinal fan up in Mich., its finally nice to get some much needed Cardinal national love/publicity through all this. Its too bad it took a fight to get it. Usually I have to wait thru all the other scores, highlights, & bottom screen feeders to get Cardinal news. Last night, lead story on ESPN, MLB, Fox & Espn Radio, & morning talk shows! SWEET. Last night was the biggest win of the season for the Cards. Lets keep it going!
