Just so you guys know, Iannetta is not a third baseman

He played third in 2008 for half a game (fairly well), when Tulo pulled a hammy, Barmes moved to short and Garrett Atkins moved to third. We beat Lincecum that day.

I think the Cardinals have had like 6 different people play at catcher in this past calendar year.

Matt Pagnozzi, Bryan Anderson, Yadier Molina, Jason LaRue, David Freese, and I think Jason Motte?

But Rasmus’ peak is Edmonds in his prime and his downside is still an above average player.

by joker24 on Jul 7, 2010 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

But the Starting Pitcher has much more impact on that one game they do play, than an outfielder does in the games they play. Is the influence enough to counter 5 games vs. 1? I honestly don’t know. Just that point is a fair one to consider, as well.

what do you think the difference is

by DanUpBaby on Jul 7, 2010 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions

there are plenty of mitigating circumstances

Franklin hasn’t had much work lately (red flag from last year)
Franklin got tweaked by the ump’s strike zone (red flag from last year)
normally good catcher failing to block three balls in one game
fine-control pitcher throwing too many pitches
fine-control pitcher throwing too many pitches while the temperature dropped low enough to start raining

the thing is, Duncan went up there. they had a plan. they were going to leave him in. when you deploy a Franklin-Yadi-Duncan three-headed monster, all the parts have to work for any closing to be done. and they let it go on despite several parts malfunctioning. even if Frankie is supposed to go out there to do a job, they had well over a dozen bifurcations in the strategy tree to pull the plug on him.

that this team was overrated before the season

but that you are probably right now, they are no longer overrated – they are considered to have a solid chance at the division now, rather than being a lock as runaway favorites. so the cards rating has changed, just like player projections are updated to reflect performance already in the books.

hey everyone listen up:

it’s just one game; perhaps indicative of a brutally disappointing season, but still one game nonetheless.

let’s not kill anyone. let’s not throw the season away because of this game. we have some things we need to figure out that’s for sure, and tlr and mo sure ain’t making it easy, but we still have one of the ostensibly better line-ups in baseball and even though they’re fucking trying to eat our hearts out they’re still our team. st. louis cardinals. flags fly forever.

i know that doesn’t excuse nights like tonight. i know that doesn’t excuse stav, miles, winn, suppan, etc. i know we have to be critical and we do that in love, most of the time. but calm down a little. deep breaths. deep breaths. it’ll be okay, eventually, i hope.

You are correct, but this game highlighted a lot of the problems we have.

Overthinking routine plays, relying on a vet in the 9th when he has nothing, bad player placement (Pujols holding the runner, Winn playing deep), just a bunch of things we dread came back to bite us.

i still got faith.

guys come on. veb schizophrenia is infuriating sometimes. we were all happy and chilling up 9-3 and now people want to tar and feather the manager and shoot franklin. if we had won, we’d have been like, ‘whoa we scored nine runs; holliday hit a home run with runners on (hfs); that was pretty sweet.’

i know that part of the reason for that difference is the fact that we lost and blew that lead, so the reaction was caused by the result, but i think we often swing too far the other way when stuff goes wrong.

As someone who isn't caught up in the misery of this win

I really have to ask if anyone things this is the first time that TLR had a game where his parade of 1000 relievers failed him? Often it works great but there’s at least one game each year where it fails miserably. There’s just not much here to get worked up over. I’d rather stay focused on the important stuff: Aaron Miles, Nick Stavinoha.

but his demeanor started changing somewhat, last year. mellowing out, I think, if you search through VEB. he’s made some weird decisions in areas where he’s typically made good decisions, and that’s more worrying than the stuff we’re used to bitching about.

but i heard it was 9-2, come home, wonder how we scored go to espn, check box score, see 12-9 rockies and did a triple take (screw double takes)… look at the pitcher’s lines and see franklin giving up six earned runs and i just sat there depressed staring at my screen

im just glad i didn’t watch the game, that would have been BRUTAL… im sorry for all those who suffered through it

also, i see VEB got broken, fixed, broken, fixed, broken, and is now fixed again….

btw SI ran a story on Ubaldo Jimenez and I think you woulda crapped your pants
This is being hailed as the Year of the Pitcher but no hurler has come close to matching the brilliance of Jimenez, Colorado’s quiet, humble ace
Right now, Jimenez is the Baddest Pitcher on the Planet, a 6’4, 215 pound intimidator so effective in his fifth major league season that for a while it looked like he may challenge Bob Gibson’s modern ERA record of 1.12
He is earning a paltry $1.25 million this season, making the pitcher who may already have the NL Cy Young locked up the biggest bargain in baseball

The rest of the story is a jizzfest over his pitches mostly and quotes from players who say he is the best

this was back when his ERA was 1.60 but i still can’t believe that last statement
