Just so you guys know, Iannetta is not a third baseman
He played third in 2008 for half a game (fairly well), when Tulo pulled a hammy, Barmes moved to short and Garrett Atkins moved to third. We beat Lincecum that day.

I think the Cardinals have had like 6 different people play at catcher in this past calendar year.
Matt Pagnozzi, Bryan Anderson, Yadier Molina, Jason LaRue, David Freese, and I think Jason Motte?

It’s a hard call.

But he is certainly an injury risk

by Andrew T. Fisher on Jul 7, 2010 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah Strasburg could very well be the best pitcher in baseball next year
But Rasmus’ peak is Edmonds in his prime and his downside is still an above average player.
by vivaelpujols on Jul 7, 2010 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions
Strasburg's peak is probably a 2.50 FIP for 200some innings
Not sure what the WAR on that is, but I think it’s a lot.
Not afraid to nitpick
Yeah, that's probably 8 WAR
Rasmus’s peak is probably a .400 wOBA and +10 defense over 155 games, which is about 7 WAR.
by vivaelpujols on Jul 7, 2010 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions
.400 is his peak
when he’s been flirting with .400 all his age 23 season?
i’m in such disagreement with that that i accidentally typed a ‘?’ after his name when searching for him in fangraphs
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
It's hard to project a guy much higher than .400
Pujols career is “only” around .430. And Rasmus’ BABIP is definitely too high this year.
by vivaelpujols on Jul 7, 2010 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions
His BABIP has been high, but by the same token
I expect his K rate to improve, negating a chunk of that.
He is?
I thought he was a ‘usually start against righties, usually not against lefties’ platoon guy. I mean, he’s young, and unproven, after all.
well, the quirks of TLR notwithstanding
all I meant is that he’s a position player so he plays more than once every 5 days.
Yeah.
But the Starting Pitcher has much more impact on that one game they do play, than an outfielder does in the games they play. Is the influence enough to counter 5 games vs. 1? I honestly don’t know. Just that point is a fair one to consider, as well.
It's probably what McLane is looking for
Actually, no….he’d turn that down. Miller is too far from the big leagues.

what do you think the difference is
between the odds that ryan franklin or mitchell boggs records one out in one chance? I just don’t think there’s a right decision to be made there. franklin got a few swinging strikes, didn’t he?
there are plenty of mitigating circumstances
Franklin hasn’t had much work lately (red flag from last year)
Franklin got tweaked by the ump’s strike zone (red flag from last year)
normally good catcher failing to block three balls in one game
fine-control pitcher throwing too many pitches
fine-control pitcher throwing too many pitches while the temperature dropped low enough to start raining
the thing is, Duncan went up there. they had a plan. they were going to leave him in. when you deploy a Franklin-Yadi-Duncan three-headed monster, all the parts have to work for any closing to be done. and they let it go on despite several parts malfunctioning. even if Frankie is supposed to go out there to do a job, they had well over a dozen bifurcations in the strategy tree to pull the plug on him.

JUST COPY AND PASTE “FUCK TONY LARUSSA AND FUCK RYAN FRANKLIN” 500 TIMES
aaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I've had that feeling
for a couple months now. I hate to say it, but this really cinches it. What the something is I don’t know, but it is definitely there.
Ok, how do you not take Franklin out before he gives up the lead?
Everything he pitched was being hit hard, even the foul balls were scorched. It was obvious to every fan, EVERYWHERE that he was grooving pitches and he was out of gas.
Guayzimi, I am officially aboard the Fire Tony LaRussa bandwagon. That was absolutely piss poor managing.

the season turned a while back
all the talk of luck for the reds blinded most to that. and they will get better, yet many wouldn’t trade miller in order for us to keep pace? then kiss it goodbye.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
remember that time
that tony pulled franklin
those were times of good managerial decisions. if boggs comes in after fowler doubles (after franklin clearly doesn’t have it) is the game lost?
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
Exactly...
It’s not like TLR didn’t do that earlier in the season, when Franklin was toast.
So why not now?
Who's left in the pen to bring in? Boggs?

hey, this was just unlucky
it was really a win. of course the cards will never win a game so luckily because we’d have already thrown in the towel.

This makes it even better...
Cardinals use 6 pitchers
Rockies use 3 pitchers
>Pitcher Change: Felipe Lopez replaces Ryan Franklin, batting 7th, replacing third baseman Felipe Lopez
Adam Wainwright reaches on force attempt, throwing error by Aaron Heilman. Jaime Garcia scores. Brendan Ryan to 3rd. Adam Wainwright to 2nd. None out.
Motte was fine. KMac too.
Why TLR went into matchup mode and didn’t let either pitch a second inning is baffling.

that's just terrific
plenty of blame to go around on this one. Lots of bad defense. Some epically bad pitching. Up 9-2 after 6 and we lose 12-9.
At least this is different; the offense didn’t cost us the game for once. Wow.

i left with the game in the bag. miles had a couple hits, didn’t he? this had nothing to do with miles. this team was just overrated, or the players aren’t playing up to expectations, however you want to frame it.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
The team is not overrated
Even looking at their Pytahg/BaseRuns will show they have played just fine. Their record is not reflective of their talent, not the other way around.
by vivaelpujols on Jul 7, 2010 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions
they've played fine
they are over a .500 team, maybe even 90 wins, but that’s not what was expected.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
that this team was overrated before the season
but that you are probably right now, they are no longer overrated – they are considered to have a solid chance at the division now, rather than being a lock as runaway favorites. so the cards rating has changed, just like player projections are updated to reflect performance already in the books.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
They are only overrated because they have played "poorly" thus far
That doesn’t mean they were overrated at the start of the season, it only applies if you look at it from a revisionist point of view.
The current projections don’t tell us how good the team was at the start of the season, they only tell us how good they are now.

hey everyone listen up:
it’s just one game; perhaps indicative of a brutally disappointing season, but still one game nonetheless.
let’s not kill anyone. let’s not throw the season away because of this game. we have some things we need to figure out that’s for sure, and tlr and mo sure ain’t making it easy, but we still have one of the ostensibly better line-ups in baseball and even though they’re fucking trying to eat our hearts out they’re still our team. st. louis cardinals. flags fly forever.
i know that doesn’t excuse nights like tonight. i know that doesn’t excuse stav, miles, winn, suppan, etc. i know we have to be critical and we do that in love, most of the time. but calm down a little. deep breaths. deep breaths. it’ll be okay, eventually, i hope.

You are correct, but this game highlighted a lot of the problems we have.
Overthinking routine plays, relying on a vet in the 9th when he has nothing, bad player placement (Pujols holding the runner, Winn playing deep), just a bunch of things we dread came back to bite us.

I remember going over the thread
for the Reds when they lost that 6 run lead against Atlanta and comments were flying all over the place about how that game was the definitive one of their season and how it would ruin it the rest of the way. I agree with you. Though, today, TLR’s ineptitude was exposed and something should be done about that

what this game has proved is that we need to rethink the back of the bullpen. there is no such thing as a non-traditional closer. I’ll take a closer by committee over franklin for the rest of the season, even if today was a “fluke” by franklin.

i still got faith.
guys come on. veb schizophrenia is infuriating sometimes. we were all happy and chilling up 9-3 and now people want to tar and feather the manager and shoot franklin. if we had won, we’d have been like, ‘whoa we scored nine runs; holliday hit a home run with runners on (hfs); that was pretty sweet.’
i know that part of the reason for that difference is the fact that we lost and blew that lead, so the reaction was caused by the result, but i think we often swing too far the other way when stuff goes wrong.
I’m pretty sure in big situations, they’d walk him [Pujols] to get to Babe Ruth.-- Matt Holliday

Seriously, if Stav and Miles are consistently getting starts, plus all of his usual reliever shenanigans. How much fucking leadership is he offering? It’s not like we have a team full of young guys that need encouragement. And the one guy who we do have is not being helped by TLR!
As someone who isn't caught up in the misery of this win
I really have to ask if anyone things this is the first time that TLR had a game where his parade of 1000 relievers failed him? Often it works great but there’s at least one game each year where it fails miserably. There’s just not much here to get worked up over. I’d rather stay focused on the important stuff: Aaron Miles, Nick Stavinoha.

gotta be realistic and go with people actually on the roster
in that case though, this isn’t realistic. i guess i (we) should just start accepting that while ludwick and freese are out one of (or more) miles/stavinoha/winn is going to be in the lineup every night.

holy shit i didn't watch the game because i was in FIFA tournament (not serious of course)
but i heard it was 9-2, come home, wonder how we scored go to espn, check box score, see 12-9 rockies and did a triple take (screw double takes)… look at the pitcher’s lines and see franklin giving up six earned runs and i just sat there depressed staring at my screen
im just glad i didn’t watch the game, that would have been BRUTAL… im sorry for all those who suffered through it
also, i see VEB got broken, fixed, broken, fixed, broken, and is now fixed again….

btw SI ran a story on Ubaldo Jimenez and I think you woulda crapped your pants
This is being hailed as the Year of the Pitcher but no hurler has come close to matching the brilliance of Jimenez, Colorado’s quiet, humble ace
Right now, Jimenez is the Baddest Pitcher on the Planet, a 6’4, 215 pound intimidator so effective in his fifth major league season that for a while it looked like he may challenge Bob Gibson’s modern ERA record of 1.12
He is earning a paltry $1.25 million this season, making the pitcher who may already have the NL Cy Young locked up the biggest bargain in baseball
The rest of the story is a jizzfest over his pitches mostly and quotes from players who say he is the best
this was back when his ERA was 1.60 but i still can’t believe that last statement
