Kelly Johnson

I read this morning that the Cubs and DB's are in discussions about a trade of Ryan Theriot and Kelly Johnson.  I don't understand the logic here for the Cubs, but it appears that the DB's are looking to get a long term solution at 2B.  Surely the Cards could come up with something more valuable to get Kelly Johnson.

Johnson hit is 17th homerun last night against the Mets and now has more than 50 RBI's.  He looks to be a poor man's version of Dan Uggla except that his defense may be better than Uggla.  Uggla has 22 dingers so far after a hot streak where he hit 6 in 6 games.  Kelly Johnson has not produced consistently at 2B year after year like Uggla, but he is putting up those numbers right now.

Johnson offers another powerful bat like many have been suggesting, and he is not a lateral move.  The Cards have been absolutely horrible at 2B, defensively and offensively, and even though Lopez offers some improvement when he most surely will slide over from 3B, he does not provide the improvement that Kelly Johnson would provide.  Lopez has some power and he and Johnson will probably hit for a similar average, but 17 dingers from a 2B is HUGE, particularily for the Cards who get nothing from the SS, 2B and C positions.

A SS upgrade would also be nice, but there is no one out there who upgrades significantly over Ryan or Greene.  Drew is a better player offensively, but he is not better defensively and there is minimum upgrade offensively.  On the other hand Kelly Johnson is like adding a legit number 5 or 6 hitter at the bottom of the line-up where power is non-existent.

What would it take to get Johnson?  There has been proposals of Rasmus going to the DB's for Drew and there was a suggestion yesterday of Drew for Jon Jay and AAA pitcher.  As good as Jon Jay looks right now a Jay for Drew, or a Jay for Kelly Johnson straight up might work, but is Jay really the guy that the Cards need to move.

Jay has been starting practically every game and after going 3 for 4 Friday night he will most certainly be in the line-up for Rasmus today.  Ludwick and Rasmus sitting may not be ideal, but right now Jay has forced his way into the lineup and he seems to want to stay there.  Competition is a good thing, but can you really afford to have Jay, Rasmus, or Ludwick sitting on the bench when either of the three could probably be traded for a Kelly Johnson.  Rasmus and some combination of Ryan/Greene and prospects might even net you Drew and Johnson.  If you don't want to trade Rasmus then move Ludwick for pitching or a middle infield bat to a team in contention needing an outfield bat .  Don't want to trade Ludwick or Rasmus then move Jon Jay while he is playing lights out.  My point is that one of them needs to be moved because of what they can bring in return - starting pitching or a middle infield bat.

I like Rasmus, Ludwick, and Jay and do not want to see any of them go - but my dislike for what is going on at 2B / SS far outweights everything else.  If we were to take a poll I would guess that most fans would be evenly split between four categories:  Keep all four and play the hot hand, move Jay while he is hot, move Ludwick because his contract will eventually force him out, or move Rasmus because he has the most value and can net the most in return.

Cards seem to have a decision to make and even choosing to not move any of the three may be the most important decision of all.

Ludwick Linked to Pads / Cards Talks

Looks like the choice the Cards are making is to try to move Ludwick to a contender.

that sucks!

Baseball first, teams second, players third, agents last.

I seriously doubt

“move Ludwick to a contender” is the motive behind the trade. The Cardinals ARE a contender. A very good contender. A team that has both pitching and offense, albeit streaky. Making sure Ludwick gets the playing time for a team he deserves is hardly the attitude that the Cards would have right now.
We’re not the freakin’ Astros.

i doubt anyone was suggesting we were trying to do luddy a favor

it’s just common sense that it would take a contender to be interested in trading for him at this point.

Common Knowledge - Ludwick would have to be moved to a contender if he was

moved. I have no problem with them moving Ludwick, and I also thought the 3-way was a way to do it. However, I thought for certain that they would be moving him for a good bat to play second or SS. Kelly Johnson is the guy that I thought made the most sense. He has power and he is hitting for average and he is above average defensively. The home and away splits are not good but everything else is and a guy who could play defense and provide power from the middle infield position is exactly what the Cards needed.

Ludwick Trade Makes this irrelevant

But it was an interesting topic of discussion. For what its worth, I like Kelly Johnson, and think he would be a great fit. But I think we’re looking at internal options for the forseeable future.

Oh, and I am getting tired of people who suggest trading Colby Rasmus. While the kid still has some growing to do, there is almost NO trade situation this would make sense. When your lineup is this top-heavy, you don’t trade a great cost-controlled player with four years left for ANY reason. It would be financial suicide.

Past Keystone Talent

This post also made me a little nostalgic. Consider who the Cardinals have been throwing out there the past ten years. Now consider past Cardinals Second Basemen include:

Red Schoendienst
Frankie Frisch
Rogers Hornsby

And I didn’t even mention Tommy Herr, who probably couldn’t hold Hornsby’s jock strap. Heck, Hornsby back in 1924 had a batting average of .424, 25 Home Runs, and an OPS+ of 222. How’d you like to have THAT guy hitting ahead of Pujols?

222 ops+

the original ridiculous.

Figgins

should easily clear waivers because of his huge contract. On the other hand his numbers are absolutely and do not look to be an upgrade. I am still holding out hope for Johnson, but I do not think he will clear waivers but you never know.

I don't think we have the pieces

To pick up Johnson right now. He’s young, and having effectively his best year. The players we have either wouldn’t generate the interest, or would be too pricey to give up. The only possible fit would be Jay, IF you think that Craig could come up from Memphis and play right field full time.

Otherwise, we work with what we’ve got.

I like Jay but

I like Craig more. Craig obviously provides more power and he has been an RBI machine. I just think he is the real deal. Therefore, as much as I like Jay, I would move him in a package for Kelly Johnson.

Update

Johnson has continued to hit and after a 3 hit night on Thurs he is now at .290 with 17 HR’s and 52 RBI’s. Probably a dead horse but while people are talking about upgrading 3B and how a 3B upgrade would allow Lopez to slide over to 2B, a upgrade at second base of someone like Kelly Johnson at 2B would provide the power bat that the Cards need.

In my mind second base is still the weakest spot and therefore the spot that should be upgraded.
