that last line
pretty much sums up my feelings about WPA and all it’s derivatives
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
twatter
i don't care if they did added nothing
he got 3 hits. everything else is out of his control. WPA is a gimmick
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
twatter
i suppose
it’s kind of like RBI. fun to look at, but not real meaningful
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
twatter
It's plenty meaningful
just not particularly predictive.
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
WPA
RBI always struck me as a bizarre thing to keep track of, even when I was a kid.
But WPA is a decent way to tally what you actually got out of a player, rather than what you could expect to get out of them going forward.
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
i dunno
i think WPA is just as bad a measure of how good the player is or how well the player did.
אנא טוני לא יותר ט.א.ס.ס
Why?
It tells you how much the player improved the teams chances in a given game. That seems to be exactly what a measure of how a player did should be.
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
but
it’s entirely too dependent upon things outside the player’s control
like jon jay going 3 for 4 and having a .003 WPA, but boog is .166 because he reached base on an error at the right time
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
twatter
It was ruled a hit, I'd assume the stat
would reflect that.
Asshattery: it's an epidemic.
Also, Dave Concepcion.
i dunno what it was ruled
i assumed it was an error because it clearly should have been
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
twatter
I think it got changed
I’m not sure if FG has updated to reflect that yet. The AP box score I read was inconsistent…..
ah, then yeah
that’s probably why
but i still think jay’s 3 hits wtih nobody on should be more valuable to a metric than boogs “hit” to score the winning run
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
twatter
I think it's more that the definition of WPA is kind of arbitrary
because when somebody is 3 for 4 they’re going to help the team win more often than not…..giving them a break-even WPA makes no real-world sense. That’s the problem, is that sometimes the numeric output of the model doesn’t seem to correspond with reality terribly well.
Other times it does though. Carp’s high pitching WPA makes perfect sense, doesn’t it?
not exactly
if all of Jay’s hits had come with the bases loaded in a tie game, he’d have enormous WPA. Did he perform worse, then, since his hits instead came with the bases empty? Is he at fault for the previous batters not having hit?
אנא טוני לא יותר ט.א.ס.ס
Though there are weird artifacts to WPA
like Trever Miller accumulating a fifth as much as Carp in this game.
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
i think if WPA is meaningful
then RBI is meaningful. it shows you exactly how many runners scored as a result of the hitter’s PAs
WPA shows you how much the teams winning percentage changed as a result of the hitter’s PAs
they’re pretty similar stats in meaningfulness
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
twatter
what's bizarre about RBI?
I mean, I get that using it to evaluate an individual batter’s skill isn’t very useful, but it does matter in each individual game context, doesn’t it?
I mean, if you hit a single, your BA & OBP go up, but you don’t score unless somebody else does something positive…..
agreed
shenanigans.
Is there another stat that is like WPA but corrects for obvious screwjobs like that? Like RE24 or something?
i dunno what you mean by "like WPA"
gimme wOBA or gimme death!

i love cheese
but honestly, if i have to pick between someone that will go 3 for 4 every start or someone that will strike out 2 or 3 our of 4, it’s a no brainer
he plays CF and RL, have him play left so lego can get a break
teach him to catch (he seems like he has the body for it), and we’re all set – of course i’m kidding
c'mon
it won’t last. I’ve on the JJ bandwagon, but it’s a mirage. He’s good, but he ain’t that good.
of course he's not that good
but until he shows signs of regression, i see no reason to sit him too often
i don’t say play him for colby all the time, though
but he deserves to get starts, he’s trying hard and if tlr brigs up another washed out gritty vet pet project, he’ll be one of the first ones to go
let the kid enjoy it while he can
But..... and I am just sayin.... what if he is that good...
Most of our best players come from unexpected places… see Pujos, Albert

that's a shame
i like winn
maybe tony will surprise us all and realize who needs to be dfa’s first

but jon jay is getting lucky

"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."

yes, .225 BABIP
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
twatter
jesus
didn’t realize he’d been that bad for that long. He needs a rest. Give him a week and let Craig play 1st.
i just don't understand the double standard
you can sit boog for weeks because he “needs a mental break”
but you can’t bring craig and give albert a mental break?
cuz that would make Albert angry and honestly Albert is at the point where he gets what he wants period
Not to mention
There a A LOT of fans that are paying good money to see Albert play. Slump or not.
Boy a frosty cold Budweiser would be great about now"…long pause…then an "aahhh". --Mike Shannon
yeah,
i don’t think tony has a lot of control over albert
i don’t remember when it was, within the last week or so, but albert had just argued a call. a pitch went near albert’s foot and tried to sell it like he was hit, though he clearly wasn’t. tony ran out there to argue the call and albert just waved for him to go back to the dugout. tony turned around and went back. i remember thinking that that showed a lot about what goes on in the dugout
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
twatter
albert and boog
are understandably held to different standards and give different levels of control over their situations. i bet tony would like to give albert a couple days off

no, him being lucky does not mean he should be benched
but his luck does not mean colby should be the 4th outfielder
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
twatter
it's not an easy decision really
Holliday = lock to start
RFL probably should be a lock, but I guess they are letting him come back slowly
Rasmus = slumping
Jay = on fire, ride the hot streak
so what would you do?
chief justice
by Cards Fan in Chitown on Jul 31, 2010 2:30 AM EDT up reply actions
i think rasmus should be a lock to start
maybe have a three man rotation where each of them takes every third day off
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
twatter
that's what it should be
just give equal playing time to all 4 players. if you look at tony’s reputation of giving equal playing time, you would think that would be the way it would go

Hasn't he been a value in the past?
aka if you factor in overpaying him in the future and underpaying him in the past will it roughly balance out? If so I’m fine with it… even if not I think he sells tickets so the ownership is fine with it if he isn’t other worldly in the future.

"The two most important things in life: good friends and a strong bullpen." - Bob Gibson
I just hope pujols realizes he wants to be a cardinal the rest of his career
and that his contract would hurt how they compete, so he pulls a joe mauer and goes pretty cheap.
Well I think we all hope that,
but at the same time I couldn’t fault him for getting all he could from whatever team he could… I’d do the same in his position.
"The two most important things in life: good friends and a strong bullpen." - Bob Gibson

just got back from the game.
I spent 2+ hours at bb’s waiting for the game to start, only to see 10 innings of pathetic baseball. I’m glad we got the win but damn. Karstens again? I think it was up to 1 run this team scored over a 26 inning span. That was a really bad game to watch. Carpenter didn’t look very sharp but was still good enough to shutout the pirates. Lol.
I don’t know how I would of handled sitting through that entire game to see a loss. I had a feeling we would win the whole game but it was still painful to watch. All I can say is i hope the offense turns it around for Suppan tomorrow and if they don’t hopefully Mozeliak can do something to make us happy. Jake Westbrook please! Mo was quoted tonight as saying ‘all is quiet’ though. I sure hope that’s not true and is some sort of ploy. All better not be quiet with all the holes we have right now. If I have to see another game like tonight from the offense plus Jeff Suppan tomorrow and the deadline pass without us adding a pitcher I’m not sure I will survive.
