there is a screenshot I almost took

where the bat doesn’t even appear to be there. the bat-head is facing the camera, so it disappears into the crowd background. meanwhile everyone is looking up and Lopez is in full epiphany mode.

first, as a gesture of appreciation—and given this site’s moniker—I think we should all pitch in and buy Lboros this ’67 Cepeda jersey:

And, in honor of my benevolence for suggesting such a selfless act, this site should buy one for me too (semi-sarcastic on the first count, dead serious on the second)

As of right now, corrected for BABIP, Skip's numbers are pretty in line with last year's

Last Year (.341 BABIP): .303/.364/.393, 8.9 BB%, 13.0 K%

This Year (.292 BABIP): .262/.325/.341, 8.1 BB%, 13.9 K%

He’s actually hitting more line drives (23.8% to 21.6%) and fewer ground balls (56.7% to 61.0%) than last year

by mysterui on Jul 26, 2010 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions

For sure, but probably not as high as .341

I would say closer to .315, which is still pretty good. I mean Skip rarely hits the ball hard and isn’t particularly fast. I’m inclined to think he’s been getting lucky for the last couple of years (heh).

by vivaelpujols on Jul 26, 2010 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

His BABIP the last three years are .341, .328, .363

Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.

by mattybobo on Jul 26, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Still, those should be regressed heavily to the mean

BABIP is a skill for hitters, but there is also a lot of noise in there. I think the 50% regression point is after 1,000 PA.

by mattybobo on Jul 26, 2010 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that's a bit too high

Schumaker has a career .324 BABIP in only 1800 PA, so it seems as though ZIPS is applying practically zero regression.

by vivaelpujols on Jul 26, 2010 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I would think so as well

Perhaps it has something to do with peripheral rates?? I dunno, I’m grasping, but I’m pretty sure Dan Szymasflkjsadf has a pretty good handle on regression.

by joker24 on Jul 26, 2010 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I would think so to

But I doubt ZIPS is bringing LD rate and that kind of stuff into the discussion. When I do the stats part of my projections I do a weighted average of K/PA, BB/PA, HBP/PA, 1B/BaB (batted ball), 2B/BaB, 3B/BaB, HR/BaB. So I don’t really use BAIBP just the hit rates.

They are next to last in the majors in OBP, but crush everyone in ISO, therefore…. no frustrating lobsters. Ha, it’s not even close.

Personally, I love to watch teams that get on base at a high clip as opposed to the blue jays model. I know some people are really infuriated by LOBsters. Move to Canada!

Also, Cardinals having a higher team ISO than Texas kind of surprised me.

Can someone try to come up with an equivalent package from the Cardinals organization? Or is it even possible? All I’ve read so far is that it’s a steal by the Angels.

I can't really

because we don’t have a single good left handed starter in the entire minor leagues.

I would say that comparable talent, assuming that handedness isn’t an issue, would 2 B level pitching prospects (Joe Kelly, Lance Lynn, or Deryk Hooker but they don’t have near the upside of the two lefties in the actual trade), Kyle McClellan (the poor man’s Joe Saunders), and Fernando Salas, who’s probably better than the reliever they got.

Can Colby round out our new MV3?

by fourstick on Jul 26, 2010 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's put it this way

The D-Backs were pretty excited about what they got, which tells me they really like the 2 A-ball pitchers projectability (yes I just made that word up). I would guess that Saunders is probably outrighted at the end of the season or maybe dealt to someone else. And I have no idea what they see in this reliever.

Can Colby round out our new MV3?

by fourstick on Jul 26, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm convinced that they just see something in the two young starters that is made them request towels

This trade just looks really stupid right now. Even if Haren falls off a cliff and goes all Scott Kazmir on the Angels (man, that would suck, as they are already paying Kazmir ~11mm/yr thru 2012 for a ~5.9 FIP), this trade will still suck for AZ. They could have… should have gotten more. Haren was a hot commodity, and they didn’t HAVE to trade him… he’s not terribly expensive, and he’s not in the last year of his contract.

This move is bad for AZ no matter what happens. It could be bad for LA as well, but AZ’s moves this year are perplexing (starting with Scherzer).

I figured it must be something likethat

ie, they just happened to really like the two a ball guys. And I couldn’t think of a lefty prospect besides Garcia, so I really didn’t know if we could even put together a package like that.

by mattybobo on Jul 26, 2010 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure I said more or less that exact package the other day

maybe with Boggs instead of KMac, and you argued that it wasn’t comparable…

FWIW I kinda agree with your initial assessment, in that if they were really high on Corbin and Skaggs, we don’t really have anyone in the low minors with that sort of ceiling outside of Miller (who’s better than either, mind you). Still, I reckon something like Miller + Kelly + major league ready arm (Hawk? Boggs?) could’ve got it done.

Still bitching to contact.

It’s no reason to make a trip specifically to eat Yogurtland, but it does improve the quality of my life quite a bit by having it convenient in LA

Basically, there are like 10 flavors of frozen yogurt and something like 30 toppings. You grab a cup, get whatever you want, and pay $.30 per oz for it. I generally spend about $3.50 which is awesome for frozen yogurt (I’m looking at you, Pinkberry)

It is quite good and very refreshing with fruit toppings. So untrue

As far as fast food joints go, what other burger compares? MAYBE Five Guys, but that’s it

Plus they’re cheap and have awesome shakes

Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'

by mysterui on Jul 26, 2010 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

That's the thing
As far as fast food joints go

I’m perfectly willing to admit that, as massive fast food burger chains go, In N Out is pretty good. But in the end, it’s still a kinda crappy fast food burger. Would I take it over McDonald’s? Sure. Burger King? Definitely. Steak’N’Shake? Eh, only maybe. Would I take it over anyplace that isn’t a fast food restaurant? Nope.

Plus, In N Out has crappy french fries, in my only-sorta-humble opinion. I can’t argue with the cost, of course. It is cheap.

It just can’t be that hard to find a better burger. This place is less than two blocks from my apartment here in SF, it is an independent fast food burger place, and it rocks In N Out’s socks. You can find a vastly better burger than In N Out’s offerings anywhere.

(And if you think this is an unpopular opinion on VEB, try making it anywhere in California. The people here act like In N Out is a gift from god himself.)

by mojowo11 on Jul 26, 2010 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

...So you're saying for what it is, then In N Out is good

But if you compare it to something it’s not, then it’s not so good?

Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'

by mysterui on Jul 26, 2010 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

What I'm saying is

People don’t evangelize In N Out by saying it’s a good burger. They evangelize it by saying it’s the best thing ever and a indispensable west coast institution that you should not miss. The person who took me to In N Out for the first time told me that it was the best burger he’d ever had. I don’t know if people up in Seattle gush about this shit as much as people from California, but people here act like God himself crafted each burger from the world’s most delicious cow. Hence the word “overrated.”

It’s just a fast food burger, and it’s not even that much better than any other fast food burger, and it’s a fair bit worse than a fast food burger you can probably find at an independent place. Meh.

Well I go to school in LA, so...

Anyways, you’re perfectly entitled to your opinion about it. You’ve actually made me think of another, completely unrelated point:

How do you, in general, feel about “wisdom of the crowds?”

Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'

by mysterui on Jul 26, 2010 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Heh, of course you're from LA :P

I believe the wisdom of crowds is useful in some contexts, but not in others. For example, I understand that lots of people like In N Out, and I’m basically arguing my opinion here. In the end, I suspect people defend In N Out vigorously less because they are actually eating a more delicious burger and more because In N Out has built a tremendous company image/brand — the “secret” menus that make people feel in the know, the way they treat their employees (and, consequently, the way their employees treat their customers), clean restaurants, limited reach (allowing it to be a “west coast thing,” and thus a subject of west coast pride), and so on. I’ll be the first to admit that In N Out is a very interesting company and a better all-around fast food experience than most places. I just think the burgers aren’t that good. That said, that’s just my opinion, and if my opinion mattered for shit against the crowd’s, In N Out wouldn’t be as hugely popular as it is.

On the other hand, the majority of baseball fans believe that RBIs are an important measure of a baseball player’s worth, even a lot of very smart people. So the crowd kinda sucks at that.

Not to dodge your question or anything, but it’s just a simple question with, I imagine, a long answer that would require a great deal of thought.

by mojowo11 on Jul 26, 2010 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

No no, that was a great answer

There are just certain types of people (and I’m absolutely not accusing you of this) that seem to always go against the wisdom of the crowd or instantly pan something because it’s popularly received, when these people are usually pretty intelligent and would appreciate the statistical value of the “wisdom of the crowds”

Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'

by mysterui on Jul 26, 2010 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

What is it wrong about?

What is the crowd really saying? It’s not saying that it’s a good technical film… a lot of low-revenue films are sound technically

I think the crowd is saying that it was a perfect summer film, released at the right time, with innovative technology, that made for a must-see film. Not just for the movie-going experience, but for the water-cooler conversations at work.

That first question that I posed is the most important part of the equation, right? I’m not saying that the crowd is always right, but you have to frame the question accurately to depict what the crowd is actually saying

Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'

by mysterui on Jul 26, 2010 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Also, I rather enjoyed Avatar, though I found the writing painful, the plot clichéd, and the message ham-handed. I was in it for a 3D CGI spectacle of epic proportions, and it did not disappoint.

by mojowo11 on Jul 26, 2010 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's how I felt about it too

It’s also why I didn’t like azru’s criticism of “Inception.” Sure, there are flaws you can point out in the movie, but in the end: it’s just a really fucking fun ride that makes you think at the end.

I would make a horrible movie critic because I don’t try to look for flaws in a movie. I try to enjoy it as best as I can and look for things to praise about it

Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'

by mysterui on Jul 26, 2010 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Well it would be okay if Avatar or Inception were advertised as summer blockbusters

But there were both advertised as “science fiction with subtle political undertones (in the case of Avatar)”.

by vivaelpujols on Jul 26, 2010 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

How were they NOT advertised at summer blockbusters?

1) They were released in summer

2) They both have HUGE name directors

3) They both have huge budgets

And isn’t a blockbuster something you name something after the fact? People have to line up to watch it for it to be a blockbuster

by mysterui on Jul 26, 2010 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's bull

a) They were both science fiction movies…so, what’s wrong with them advertising them as science fiction movies, exactly?
b) Avatar’s trailers basically showed lots of aliens, spaceships, and explosions and never said anything about political undertones, let alone the subtlety with which they would be presented.

by mojowo11 on Jul 26, 2010 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

it wasn't very subtle at all

But yeah, they were Science fiction movies, so why not advertise them as is?

this thread is all Aaron Mile's fault.

by Evilfrog on Jul 26, 2010 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay, but people's criticism of the movies was that they were poorly executed

The plot was dull, the characters were cliched, the diologue was bad, the science wasn’t interested – whatever tickles your fancy.

If you want to ignore that by saying it’s just a summer blockbuster and a fun ried so you can’t criticize it for those things, that’s fine, but the movies did not present themselves as “fun rides” they presented themselves as high quality movies.

by vivaelpujols on Jul 26, 2010 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions
