there is a screenshot I almost took

first, as a gesture of appreciation—and given this site’s moniker—I think we should all pitch in and buy Lboros this ’67 Cepeda jersey:

And, in honor of my benevolence for suggesting such a selfless act, this site should buy one for me too (semi-sarcastic on the first count, dead serious on the second)
second, the Mang himself is going to be a guest on Letterman tonight.

or is it Lopez’ ?
Blaine Matthew Burns: Albert Pujols' biggest fan (his first words will for sure be "Albert Pujols is RIDICULOUS")
As of right now, corrected for BABIP, Skip's numbers are pretty in line with last year's
Last Year (.341 BABIP): .303/.364/.393, 8.9 BB%, 13.0 K%
This Year (.292 BABIP): .262/.325/.341, 8.1 BB%, 13.9 K%
He’s actually hitting more line drives (23.8% to 21.6%) and fewer ground balls (56.7% to 61.0%) than last year
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
I guess we probably shouldn't have expected a .340 BABIP again for Skippy
by vivaelpujols on Jul 26, 2010 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions
but if he's hitting fewer ground balls and more line drives, wouldn't you expect a higher BABIP than .292?
"Did you just grow a mustache?"
"While SPINNING."
For sure, but probably not as high as .341
I would say closer to .315, which is still pretty good. I mean Skip rarely hits the ball hard and isn’t particularly fast. I’m inclined to think he’s been getting lucky for the last couple of years (heh).
by vivaelpujols on Jul 26, 2010 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions
His BABIP the last three years are .341, .328, .363
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
Still, those should be regressed heavily to the mean
BABIP is a skill for hitters, but there is also a lot of noise in there. I think the 50% regression point is after 1,000 PA.
by vivaelpujols on Jul 26, 2010 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions
You're smarter than me on these things so I'll just assume what you said makes sense
Heh. But seriously, I was just really surprised they had been that high for him three years in a row.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
I think that's a bit too high
Schumaker has a career .324 BABIP in only 1800 PA, so it seems as though ZIPS is applying practically zero regression.
by vivaelpujols on Jul 26, 2010 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah I would think so as well
Perhaps it has something to do with peripheral rates?? I dunno, I’m grasping, but I’m pretty sure Dan Szymasflkjsadf has a pretty good handle on regression.
Not afraid to nitpick
I would think so to
But I doubt ZIPS is bringing LD rate and that kind of stuff into the discussion. When I do the stats part of my projections I do a weighted average of K/PA, BB/PA, HBP/PA, 1B/BaB (batted ball), 2B/BaB, 3B/BaB, HR/BaB. So I don’t really use BAIBP just the hit rates.

LOBster update
This just confirms that Toronto is having one of the weirdest seasons of the past decade.
They are next to last in the majors in OBP, but crush everyone in ISO, therefore…. no frustrating lobsters. Ha, it’s not even close.
Personally, I love to watch teams that get on base at a high clip as opposed to the blue jays model. I know some people are really infuriated by LOBsters. Move to Canada!
Also, Cardinals having a higher team ISO than Texas kind of surprised me.
"If I'm in a slump, I ask myself for advice" - Ichiro
No kidding.
I would have thought that Josh Hamilton plus 8 Aaron Miles’s could have a higher ISO than the Cards.
Baseball's only fun if you're playing it, watching it, or thinking about it.

Ugh. I was happy that we salvaged a game (somehow) but man, Saturday was a tough one. And I knew it was going to be after Colvin’s leadoff pop fly sailed out.
Anyway, happy to be back in Saint Louis.
Maybe this has been discussed previously in the thread, but....
Cardinals have restructured their starters for the series against the Mets….Wainwright, Garcia, and Hawksworth will pitching instead of Garcia, Hawksworth, Suppan

Can someone try to come up with an equivalent package from the Cardinals organization? Or is it even possible? All I’ve read so far is that it’s a steal by the Angels.

Joe Saunders is a ML pitcher that's better than what we have to offer
He’s not worth $6 million, no, but he’ll contribute positively to the rotation. That’s the one thing that we don’t have in a potential trade

I can't really
because we don’t have a single good left handed starter in the entire minor leagues.
I would say that comparable talent, assuming that handedness isn’t an issue, would 2 B level pitching prospects (Joe Kelly, Lance Lynn, or Deryk Hooker but they don’t have near the upside of the two lefties in the actual trade), Kyle McClellan (the poor man’s Joe Saunders), and Fernando Salas, who’s probably better than the reliever they got.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
Let's put it this way
The D-Backs were pretty excited about what they got, which tells me they really like the 2 A-ball pitchers projectability (yes I just made that word up). I would guess that Saunders is probably outrighted at the end of the season or maybe dealt to someone else. And I have no idea what they see in this reliever.
Can Colby round out our new MV3?
Yeah, I'm convinced that they just see something in the two young starters that is made them request towels
This trade just looks really stupid right now. Even if Haren falls off a cliff and goes all Scott Kazmir on the Angels (man, that would suck, as they are already paying Kazmir ~11mm/yr thru 2012 for a ~5.9 FIP), this trade will still suck for AZ. They could have… should have gotten more. Haren was a hot commodity, and they didn’t HAVE to trade him… he’s not terribly expensive, and he’s not in the last year of his contract.
This move is bad for AZ no matter what happens. It could be bad for LA as well, but AZ’s moves this year are perplexing (starting with Scherzer).
"If I'm in a slump, I ask myself for advice" - Ichiro
I figured it must be something likethat
ie, they just happened to really like the two a ball guys. And I couldn’t think of a lefty prospect besides Garcia, so I really didn’t know if we could even put together a package like that.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
I'm sure I said more or less that exact package the other day
maybe with Boggs instead of KMac, and you argued that it wasn’t comparable…
FWIW I kinda agree with your initial assessment, in that if they were really high on Corbin and Skaggs, we don’t really have anyone in the low minors with that sort of ceiling outside of Miller (who’s better than either, mind you). Still, I reckon something like Miller + Kelly + major league ready arm (Hawk? Boggs?) could’ve got it done.
Still bitching to contact.

How to make a Double-double from In-n-Out:
Welp there goes my weekend
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
that made me so hungry
and i don’t even like mustard
"Did you just grow a mustache?"
"While SPINNING."
Do you have In-n-Outs in AZ?
None in Seattle, which angers me to no end.
Also: Do you have Yogurtland?
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
we have so many in n outs....its a challenge not to eat it daily
i have never heard of yogurt land, but that doesn’t mean much.
"Did you just grow a mustache?"
"While SPINNING."
aaand it turns out there are 4 in arizona
though none in the city of phoenix. is it good? if so, i will hit that up next time i go to snottsdale
"Did you just grow a mustache?"
"While SPINNING."
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes
It’s no reason to make a trip specifically to eat Yogurtland, but it does improve the quality of my life quite a bit by having it convenient in LA
Basically, there are like 10 flavors of frozen yogurt and something like 30 toppings. You grab a cup, get whatever you want, and pay $.30 per oz for it. I generally spend about $3.50 which is awesome for frozen yogurt (I’m looking at you, Pinkberry)
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
There are tons of these places now
We are partial to Cherry on Top but there are also a bunch of Golden Spoons too. I haven’t been to Yogurtland specifically but it sounds the same. Of course the yogurts sound really healthy before I pile on a bunch of toppings like hot fudge, reeses, etc.
It's frozen yogurt
It’s essentially a healthier ice cream
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
so it's really nothing like real yogurt?
i guess i have to try some
any frozen yogurt places in stl?
is that really how you spell yogurt? i seem to vaguely remember an h taking place somewhere in that word
only if you're british
in which case it’s spelled yoghurt and pronounced “yog-urt” instead of “yo-gurt”
אנא טוני לא יותר ט.א.ס.ס
Yeah, it's not very similar to yogurt at all texturally
I’ll have to defer to other people about places in STL though. My guess is that there will be SOME places, but it isn’t popular enough in the Midwest to have economies of scale to make it as cheap as places out west
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
i seem to recall getting some frozen yoghurt drink
at the chicago airport last year
it was expensive
and awful
if only i could remember the name of that joint so i don’t go there again..
There are some around, but I'm not aware of any chains.
We go the other way with our frozen treats. Ice cream isn’t bad enough- frozen custard is where it’s at.

can’t say i prefer it to icecream
I thought I heard somewhere
that most commercial ice cream had eggs these days, making it technically custard.

Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
Pinkberry's original flavor is actually really yogurt tasting
It is quite good and very refreshing with fruit toppings. The Golden Spoons and Cherry on Tops that we have out here in CA are not really the same sort of tart yogurt, but more similar to the frozen yogurt you would find at TCBY. These places have an assortment of flavors like chocolate, cookies and cream, peanut butter, etc.
I've never heard of either of those. And you live in the OC?

obviously i am going there tonight.

Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'

Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
It's a) more expensive and
b) slower (and has no drive through).
It’s trying to be more of a gourmet place, but it’s still really a fast food joint that is very reminiscent of In n Out (I mean, even the decor is very similar), and since In n Out came first I choose to believe they’re being a little copycat-ish.
I like Five Guys
Never had In ’n Out
I don’t really consider Five Guys fast food, since you have to wait a little while on it. My favorite fast food burger (that I’ve eaten) is between Whataburger and Wendy’s

So untrue
As far as fast food joints go, what other burger compares? MAYBE Five Guys, but that’s it
Plus they’re cheap and have awesome shakes
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
That's the thing
As far as fast food joints go
I’m perfectly willing to admit that, as massive fast food burger chains go, In N Out is pretty good. But in the end, it’s still a kinda crappy fast food burger. Would I take it over McDonald’s? Sure. Burger King? Definitely. Steak’N’Shake? Eh, only maybe. Would I take it over anyplace that isn’t a fast food restaurant? Nope.
Plus, In N Out has crappy french fries, in my only-sorta-humble opinion. I can’t argue with the cost, of course. It is cheap.
It just can’t be that hard to find a better burger. This place is less than two blocks from my apartment here in SF, it is an independent fast food burger place, and it rocks In N Out’s socks. You can find a vastly better burger than In N Out’s offerings anywhere.
(And if you think this is an unpopular opinion on VEB, try making it anywhere in California. The people here act like In N Out is a gift from god himself.)
...So you're saying for what it is, then In N Out is good
But if you compare it to something it’s not, then it’s not so good?
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
What I'm saying is
People don’t evangelize In N Out by saying it’s a good burger. They evangelize it by saying it’s the best thing ever and a indispensable west coast institution that you should not miss. The person who took me to In N Out for the first time told me that it was the best burger he’d ever had. I don’t know if people up in Seattle gush about this shit as much as people from California, but people here act like God himself crafted each burger from the world’s most delicious cow. Hence the word “overrated.”
It’s just a fast food burger, and it’s not even that much better than any other fast food burger, and it’s a fair bit worse than a fast food burger you can probably find at an independent place. Meh.
People in the Northwest gush about Burgerville
I’ve been there loads of times because my in-laws are from there. Never even had an In N Out burger.
However, I will gladly sing the praises of Whataburger. I can’t help it, I love that place.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
I loved Whataburger but apparently people in my town hated it and it closed like 8 months after it opened.
Lame! (Lame that it closed so quickly I mean)
I get periodic cravings for the bacon cheeseburger, the chicken strips, and the strangely addictive proprietary ketchup.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
Whataburger is overrated for burgers
But their chicken strips are good. They lace the toast and gravy with heroin.
Disclaimer: I had lunch at one in Schulenberg today.
>Pitcher Change: Felipe Lopez replaces Ryan Franklin, batting 7th, replacing third baseman Felipe Lopez
Adam Wainwright reaches on force attempt, throwing error by Aaron Heilman. Jaime Garcia scores. Brendan Ryan to 3rd. Adam Wainwright to 2nd. None out.
In Seattle it's all about Dick's actually
It’s a good burger. Not quite on par with In N Out, but it’s alright. Cheap as shit
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
Ah. Maybe Burgerville is more just a Portland thing
Come to think of it, I am not sure I’ve been to one in Washington.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
Burgerville is based in Washington.
But it’s Vancouver, and most of its restaurants are in the Portland area.
Known for using fresh, local ingredients. Their burgers are good, but I don’t hear people praising them to the extent that they praise In-N-Outs.

Most of those words in succession mean nothing to me
Whereas “Double-double Animal-style, protein-style with extra spread” is perfectly intelligible
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
It's surprisingly literal
rings of walla walla onions, shake made with blackberries. Although it’s funny, blackberries are weeds up there. People seem to get much more excited about the raspberries and strawberries.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
to be fair, blackberries deserve to be weeds
the plants are all thorny and shit.

Ah, I didn't know walla walla was a type of onion

yeah and i thought mysterui would know that since he LIVES THERE!*

I've been here for two months!
All I know is the area immediately surrounding downtown Seattle.
And Forks. Man, that place sucks.
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
Yeah, I asked my wife and mother-in-law
Burgerville is pretty much just Portland. So you won’t getting it in Seattle.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
Do you shop for food at markets?
Walla Wallas are in season now, and they’re all over all the supermarkets.
"They punched me a lot," Holliday said of the celebration [after his July 18 walk-off single]. "But they were good punches."
I go to a farmer's market maybe twice a month
But to be honest, I don’t buy nearly as many veggies as I should. I just buy a bag of spinach from Safeway for salad and call it good
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
You're a sweet onion :3
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
That's the most romantic thing I've ever heard.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
...
I sit corrected.
There, are you happy now?
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
Well I go to school in LA, so...
Anyways, you’re perfectly entitled to your opinion about it. You’ve actually made me think of another, completely unrelated point:
How do you, in general, feel about “wisdom of the crowds?”
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
Heh, of course you're from LA :P
I believe the wisdom of crowds is useful in some contexts, but not in others. For example, I understand that lots of people like In N Out, and I’m basically arguing my opinion here. In the end, I suspect people defend In N Out vigorously less because they are actually eating a more delicious burger and more because In N Out has built a tremendous company image/brand — the “secret” menus that make people feel in the know, the way they treat their employees (and, consequently, the way their employees treat their customers), clean restaurants, limited reach (allowing it to be a “west coast thing,” and thus a subject of west coast pride), and so on. I’ll be the first to admit that In N Out is a very interesting company and a better all-around fast food experience than most places. I just think the burgers aren’t that good. That said, that’s just my opinion, and if my opinion mattered for shit against the crowd’s, In N Out wouldn’t be as hugely popular as it is.
On the other hand, the majority of baseball fans believe that RBIs are an important measure of a baseball player’s worth, even a lot of very smart people. So the crowd kinda sucks at that.
Not to dodge your question or anything, but it’s just a simple question with, I imagine, a long answer that would require a great deal of thought.
No no, that was a great answer
There are just certain types of people (and I’m absolutely not accusing you of this) that seem to always go against the wisdom of the crowd or instantly pan something because it’s popularly received, when these people are usually pretty intelligent and would appreciate the statistical value of the “wisdom of the crowds”
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
What is it wrong about?
What is the crowd really saying? It’s not saying that it’s a good technical film… a lot of low-revenue films are sound technically
I think the crowd is saying that it was a perfect summer film, released at the right time, with innovative technology, that made for a must-see film. Not just for the movie-going experience, but for the water-cooler conversations at work.
That first question that I posed is the most important part of the equation, right? I’m not saying that the crowd is always right, but you have to frame the question accurately to depict what the crowd is actually saying
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
Agreed
Also, I rather enjoyed Avatar, though I found the writing painful, the plot clichéd, and the message ham-handed. I was in it for a 3D CGI spectacle of epic proportions, and it did not disappoint.
Yeah, that's how I felt about it too
It’s also why I didn’t like azru’s criticism of “Inception.” Sure, there are flaws you can point out in the movie, but in the end: it’s just a really fucking fun ride that makes you think at the end.
I would make a horrible movie critic because I don’t try to look for flaws in a movie. I try to enjoy it as best as I can and look for things to praise about it
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
Well it would be okay if Avatar or Inception were advertised as summer blockbusters
But there were both advertised as “science fiction with subtle political undertones (in the case of Avatar)”.
by vivaelpujols on Jul 26, 2010 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions
How were they NOT advertised at summer blockbusters?
1) They were released in summer
2) They both have HUGE name directors
3) They both have huge budgets
And isn’t a blockbuster something you name something after the fact? People have to line up to watch it for it to be a blockbuster
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
Avatar was released in the winter, wasn't it?
"I'm gonna throw the nastiest curveball I have ever thrown...if he hits it, I'll tip my cap, but if not we're going to the Series."
--Adam Wainwright on the final pitch of the 2006 NLCS
Yeah, that's bull
a) They were both science fiction movies…so, what’s wrong with them advertising them as science fiction movies, exactly?
b) Avatar’s trailers basically showed lots of aliens, spaceships, and explosions and never said anything about political undertones, let alone the subtlety with which they would be presented.
it wasn't very subtle at all
But yeah, they were Science fiction movies, so why not advertise them as is?
this thread is all Aaron Mile's fault.
Okay, but people's criticism of the movies was that they were poorly executed
The plot was dull, the characters were cliched, the diologue was bad, the science wasn’t interested – whatever tickles your fancy.
If you want to ignore that by saying it’s just a summer blockbuster and a fun ried so you can’t criticize it for those things, that’s fine, but the movies did not present themselves as “fun rides” they presented themselves as high quality movies.

I just enjoy hating that movie
Cool special effects but people acting like it was anything but a shitty plot wrapped in a cool package annoys me.
Not afraid to nitpick
The plot's not shitty
It’s just been done before. As all plots have.
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
The entire movie was 100% predictable from within the first 10 minutes
Down to the one on one battle. And there’s a difference between being unoriginal and ripping off Pocohontas almost line for line. Pocohontas!

I could be wrong
But I believe Hitler referred to them more as being members of the NSDAP.

it's fine because no one really seemed to care

That was the German acronym
Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei….National Socialist German Workers Party would be NSGWP.

I was wondering what that stood for
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
i find that when i eat somewhere or see something that has been super-hyped i always think its overrated
but then i wonder, if i had just seen avatar on my own without ever hearing about it, maybe i would have thought it was a great movie.
"Did you just grow a mustache?"
"While SPINNING."
hahaha.
Yes, In n Out is Jesus. Do not question the In n Out.
That said, I disagree with this statement:
You can find a vastly better burger than In N Out’s offerings anywhere.
I’ve tried in vain for a long time here in STL. However, for a chain fast food restaurant, it is the best thing going that I’ve ever had.
I'm a little biased
But I’ve always loved the burgers at The Fatted Calf. However, I feel some emotional attachment to the place, since my mom worked there when she was a teenager in the late 60s.
Fatted Calf is good
but I love Chuck-A-Burger. They do the thin-patty, crispy-edge thing, though. I know some folks aren’t into that.
Five Guys is excellent, but I’ve never had In ’n Out.
I'm out of champagna. How about some 7-Up and Mad Dog 20/20?

However, I did just throw up on my computer due to your use of that meme. Thanks, jerk.
Wait, that's not true
One time I ate so much Imo’s pizza in one sitting that I threw up a tiny bit in the restaurant’s bathroom. I had no regrets.

you realize that VEB hardly ever used that meme until you pointed out how much you hate it?

Well.
1. Gets mentioned on VEB.
2. ???
3. Profit!

Adam Wainwright reaches on force attempt, throwing error by Aaron Heilman. Jaime Garcia scores. Brendan Ryan to 3rd. Adam Wainwright to 2nd. None out.
Or maybe you only started noticing it when I started bitching?
In any case, VEB is pretty typically like 6 months behind on greater internet memes, so I doubt I could have stopped it.
It's best to replace one 4chanesque meme with another

or just change the topic completely
