which then leads to me to believe we aren’t getting oswalt either, and the whole thing is just to drive the price up

They got a decent ML starter in return
We don’t have that to offer back… that’s probably why they chose the Angels’ package

I’m sort of astounded they couldn’t get a better prospect. Maybe they went for quantity. But why bother with Joe Saunders at all? He’s a few months from being a non-tender.

Isn't there supposed to be a big time prospect as a PTBNL
I know usually the PTBNL guy is a joke, but everything I’ve read makes it sound like he’s a big deal.

Without knowing the minor leaguers, seems doable for the Cards - maybe Oswalt IS on the way here.

from AZ Snake Pit
It has just been announced that Dan Haren has been traded to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for for Joe Saunders, Patrick Corbin, Rafael Rodriguez and a player to be named.
Joe Saunders is a left-handed starting pitcher, with a career ERA+ of 104, who is arbitration-eligible for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Patrick Corbin is another lefty, currently starting for the Angels High-A affiliate – he only turned 21 last week. Rafael Rodriguez is a right-handed reliever, who has only thrown 32.2 innings in the majors. Nick Piecoro just tweeted “Told the player to be named in the deal is a top prospect…”

There's only SO many fucking chances you can blow before it catches up to you.

John Rooney 5/3/10 referring to Philly fans on Cards 5-run 7th inning
mostly luck-driven
his k/bb is predictably excellent, and his LD% is the highest in his career to go with a career low popup . Although he’s hitting more groundballs than ever, he shouldn’t have a .252 babip and the 5.6 hr/fb (better than his career rate!) doesn’t help either.
He is a much better hitter than his numbers this year, although I certainly wouldn’t expect the GIDP’s to stop.

Could Colby Rasmus hit a ball so hard that even he couldn't catch it?
The biggest problem was when we pinch-hit for Carpenter earlier with Aaron Miles instead of Rasmus.

That was awesome.
Great game. It will be better if we can win it though.
You fit into me
like a hook into an eye
a fish hook
an open eye
Really?
I thought that was as down the middle as a down the middle pitch can be.
Not afraid to nitpick
But if it ends up right down the middle...
There isn’t a single pitch outside of a knuckleball with enough break to make it a “good pitch” if it ends up square in the middle of the plate.
Not afraid to nitpick
A hitter only can atch the pitch for 1/3 to 2/3 of it's flight...
…before deciding to swing.
During the first 1/2 to 2/3 of it’s flight, that ball looked like it was going to be outside. Only toward the end of its flight did it tail in.
In other words, who gives a shit where it ended up (other than that it was a strike). What matters is that it looked like a ball during the time that the hitter was reading it.
Which is why he took it.
Or he took it because he was sitting breaking ball after the 3 previous ones he'd seen and Franklin got obscenely lucky
A ball down the middle necessarily can’t be a good pitch, I don’t really know how that is a debatable statement. He was aiming to get that off the inside corner.
Not afraid to nitpick

Notice how it follows the same trajectory as pitches 1,2, and 3
But moves the opposite way.
They got Byrd thinking they were going to pick at him low and away and then gave him a pitch that looked low and away, and like a slider, but then wasn’t.
That’s nice pitch calling and execution.

אנא טוני לא יותר ט.א.ס.ס
Definitely.
A legitimate area of concern is the roster management that keeps compliments one of the best rotation-fronts and top hitters in baseball with a bunch of guys who should be forcibly retired or in the minor leagues.
Somewhat legitimate but a bit hysterical areas of concern include: Jaime topping 100 innings, nagging injuries that take forever to heal (Freese, Lud, BP.
Illegitimate areas of concern are Holliday hitting with RISP, Flopez being “lazy”, Bud Norris, all this TRADE RYAN FUCKING LUDWICK TALK, and such.

Naturally, I fear a Pujols decline,

I’m expecting him to heat up in August-September.

well I'm sorry, but I'm reading every day.
as soon as Holliday started hitting, we kept it up as a meme.
Lopez has made a string of errors getting the ball out of his glove, which is fodder for reactionary game threads.
Bud Norris: all jokes.
RFL: shot down every time with its own meme.
I’m serious — we’re not serious about it. I hope you don’t take offense of that too, because truly. this place has not begun to run for the hills. the start of the second half reset a lot of things.
there are literally a handful of commeters who have their hobby horses, and a random smattering of newbies. the former won’t listen, the latter don’t come back. and then there’s 99% of VEB.

It's the predictions of -- almost the hope for -- disasters
that I don’t much like. Comments at the point of sloppy baseball are understandable, even cathartic. But it’s almost as though some commenters would rather be right on a prediction than to have the Cards win the game. Speaks of some immaturity that I should be more tolerant of, I guess.
"They punched me a lot," Holliday said of the celebration [after his July 18 walk-off single]. "But they were good punches."
Sort of this.
Like, people hate FLopex, so suddenly every time he pops up it’s some huge disaster. Either that or they hate the Holliday contract, so they brought up all these crazy SSS pieces of non-evidence about him being terrible at the start of the year with RISP. I wasn’t a fan of that contract too, but RISP is just bloody luck and to rely on RISP numbers in small samples as a reason to be pessimistic is just bias or laziness or dumb.

'Don't kiss an ass if its in the process of shitting on you.' - Best advice ever.
I would like to reiterate
we are in a tight pennant race in late July, despite having two starting pitchers, our right fielder, and our third baseman out for months; our center fielder and utilityman have missed time; our middle infield has hit poorly, and our #4 and #5 starters have been patchwork.
It’s likely only to get better from here, and I would appreciate people not freaking out about every single event in a ballgame whose outcome is still very much in doubt…..
those reasons
are exactly why there is freaking out. it’s mostly venting.
but honestly, I have yet to see any real panic. just high emotion. we can’t all be emotionless robots.

and there is history there.
there’s a lot of reason to freak out. we’ve lost in late innings. we’ve lost to the cubs. we’ve lost Carpenter starts. we’ve lost via the bullpen. we’ve lost on the road. we’ve lost due to bad defense. bad baserunning. failure of the offense. all recently.
every single one of those loses stung like a mofo, and that was just wrapped up in this game.

maybe it's cause I've been mostly watching on streamtorrent recently
so I’m always a batter or three behind anyway, but I can’t understand how people can be so doomy when we’ve clearly got a lot of talent on this team.
We took 7 of 8 from LA and Philly. Hamels pitched a great game, Wells pitched a great game, we lost a close one. Then, lo and behold, our luck turned and we won a close one. I mean, baseball is up and down from one week to the next, I just can’t get that freaked out when we’re still 10 games over .500….
it's not the ups-and-downs, man.
it’s the mistakes. it’s the sloppy baseball. that is maddening. that is how to give away games.
I’m sorry, but talent ain’t worth shit if they can’t or won’t execute. and the thing is, we don’t look for new things to go wrong—
we’re looking for the same old damn things to go wrong. all you have to do is say double-switch. GIDP. first pitch swing. roster management.
these things are not fixed. they have not been fixed for a long, long time. I’m sure you want us all to deal with it in the same way, but we’re human beings, and this is past mid-season. some of it should be better… and some of it is worse.
I believe pessimism only crosses the line if it 1) starts getting personal, or 2) starts looking for brand new things to go wrong.

I'm just sayin'
we don’t have the luxury of actually trying to wring Bob Davidson’s neck, or for that matter, suggest it in writing.
some of us need a little space for some primal screams.
and — if I could make a suggestion — if it’s just getting excessive, or more to the point, irrational-and-repetitive, then just say “hey, that’s enough.” chances are, ten other commenters will second you. adding irritation to frustration is just going to put the firecrackers to the keg in a game-thread.

the knee-jerk stuff seems to have been increasing lately. Being concerned about the team, or critcising individuals or decisions is one thing—I do plenty of that myself—but it’s the Sky is Falling Cubs Fan stuff that drives me nuts….
it is increasing, yes.

Talent doesn't mean anything when you're watching a single game
99% of what happens here during a game is just venting and verbal face-palming at the sloppy play from a team we know is really good.
Heck, this goes to what I said last night about how I wish I didn’t feel the need to watch regular season baseball. There are just so many highs and lows in each game. You can’t expect people to just sit back, emotionless, as they watch a season unfold. (That is, unless they’re not actually watching the games.)

Please let’s try to stay there
So back to this Haren trade...
Joe Saunders has a 4.8 fip over his last 300 innings. He strikes out 4.8 a game while walking 3.4. He’s going to make $6 million next year and will almost certainly be non-tendered.
How do such amazingly bad trades still happen in this day and age?
Fire La Russa!
They see something in him they think that they can fix?
and they were scared LA would offer him arb?

I’m pretty sure 27-28 orgs still value him as a #1 starter.
"If I'm in a slump, I ask myself for advice" - Ichiro
We could've sent Stock, Samuel, Kelly, and Hawksworth
for Dan Haren.
We always seem to pay top dollar at the deadline while these other teams get away with highway robbery.
Fire La Russa!
Maybe Mo tried that exact package
and AZ sees something they really like in these middling Angels prospects
We don’t know.
I’m inclined to agree with you, though.
"If I'm in a slump, I ask myself for advice" - Ichiro
I hate to start this again, but Stock isn't valuable
And he’s actually getting worse as the season goes along somehow.
Not afraid to nitpick
If he could hold opposing batters to .210/.307/.262
That’d be a prospect haha.
Not afraid to nitpick
A 2nd-rounder from 2009 isn't valuable?
I strongly disagree on the pretense that many FO’s don’t look so much at his 2010 stats, but see….. “2nd-round pick from a year ago”… obviously if he was also doing well it would help. But he still retains some value.
"If I'm in a slump, I ask myself for advice" - Ichiro
The problem is that I keep having to point out
Is that he didn’t hit in college and he’s hitting .210/.307/.262! Two Six Two!
If he didn’t have the backup plan as a pitcher, he probably isn’t a 2nd rounder—-and if he didn’t have the upside as a catcher, he’s definitely not a 2nd rounder as a pitcher. He was drafted there because of the combo, and .210/.307/.262 probably means he’s not a catcher and has now spent 1.5 years not being a pitcher.
Not afraid to nitpick
Converting to a relief pitcher doesn't take THAT much time, I don't think
Motte did it pretty quickly and successfully
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
Sure, but don't you think some GM's project him favorably as a pitcher?
What GM wouldn’t want to say they traded for a poorly hitting catcher and turned him into Motte 2.0?
GM’s don’t leave their egos at the door when they make decisions.
"If I'm in a slump, I ask myself for advice" - Ichiro
What GM would like to explain to their boss that they traded Dan Haren for a catcher that they hope can still pitch?
Not afraid to nitpick
(plus a few other prospects) is the kind of value I think Stock has...
Not a 1-1 trade. Not saying it’s completely rational. Just that he’s the kind of player that I see GM’s overselling themselves on.
"If I'm in a slump, I ask myself for advice" - Ichiro
Based on what?
That he’s currently a catcher who is hitting like the relief pitcher they hope he can become?
He was an upside 2nd rounder, I liked the pick, but that upside is all but gone. Until he proves otherwise, he’s a dime a dozen relief prospect
Not afraid to nitpick

OT: my brother is at rolla for a few weeks at a pre-college program (he's going to be a freshman)
his SUPER religious roommate (wakes up at 5 AM every day to read the bible and go to church) decides he wants to mod a nerf gun and see if he can get it to shoot out ping pong balls or something like that. so he goes to wal mart to buy the nerf gun and then goes to radioshack to buy some motors or something along those lines.
long story short, the guys decides that it would be a good idea to put a live wire in an outlet. my brother was asleep at the time, but was awoken but a loud, electrical-sounding pop. of course he gets out of bed to see what the hell is going on, and is just murdered by a horrible smell when he gets out to his living room area. the wall is covered in black, smoke is coming out of the outlet, and the dude is lying down on the floor wondering how the hell it happened and how the hell he is still alive. later, they find the kid cleaning up the marks he left with a paper towel and soapy water. who the fuck does that?

Things more important than having great undergraduate academic rankings vs. just good:
-Male/female ratio
-Weather
-City
-Sports teams
-Not being known as an engineering school
-Availability of on-campus food options
-Distance one has to walk to class
-Distance one has to travel home

I would say in order
- Not being known as an engineering school
- Weather
- City
- Sports teams
- Distance one has to walk to class
- Availability of on-campus food options
- Distance one has to travel home
- Having great program in what you think you want to do but probably will switch that by the end of your sophomore year.

2. ehhhh. it snows a lot. and gets down to 0 and the absolute coldest part of the year. and it rains a lot in october. okay so the weather isn’t so great.
3. one of the more hotly debated topics. a lot of people who go there say it’s fine, 99.9% of people who don’t know the town laugh at it.
4. yeah, no. absolute fail.
5. A+. never have to walk more than a quarter mile to class

uuuuhhhhh I think those are the most-used and -inexplicable ones. I don’t think we play Arizona again, so you don’t need to know about the eels.

Thanks. I’ve been a card-carrying Albert fan since about April 2001. What a stud.
And I’ve been a Cards fan since 1962. I’m not a newbie in the conventional sense, just finally decided to tune in to the SBN site. But 2000 comments in a game thread is more than a little daunting. Wow.

Cards-Cubs, extra innings. Yeah, we were on a roll.
Not uncommon, however. If this team gets on a streak, the gamethreads will get pretty long again.
Welcome aboard!

Thanks! Go Cards! Viva El Birdos!
Am I correct that El Birdos was coined by Orlando Cepeda in 1967?
