Game 96: Overflow Thread
Motte and Boggs both with 2 inning efforts. Remember this the next time we're told we need a long reliever.
Aaron Miles 0-for-4 out of the leadoff spot. Try to forget this.

Seems to happen often when you switch pitchers in the middle of an AB.

Lefties
So both of our lefties faced Ryan Howard today and neither of them got him out. I can’t think that is at all a good sign.
that sign has been neon for awhile now, it seems
probably getting a few good, hard looks at maclane here and there, just in case.

This is ridiculous.
0 runs in 10 innings, probably nothing in 11 innings.

if we're gonna lose in the 11th, can it be by less than 5 runs please?

I just don’t like our ABs today. During this little stretch of winning, you’d definitely be optimistic but man, we’ve looked wiped out today.
Still, I hope you’re on to something.
My worry is that we've run off this string of victories and then we go and lose 4 of 6 or something.

OT question
Does anyone here play any baseball simulation games? Used to play Strat-O-Matic as a kid and am thinking about picking up something to play online, but am completely out of the loop as to what is out there. What’s crap and what’s not, etc. I know Strat-O-Matic has an online version but I don’t know much about it, and don’t know if there is anything better.
I believe Danup does,

baseball mogul is great
it’s less in-depth than Out of the Park, the other popular one, but the interface is more intuitive. Basically, if you’d like to sim a day at a time, deal with the 40-man, play the rule 5 draft, you’ll probably prefer OOTP; if you want to build up a dynasty and sim a week or a month or years at a time, Baseball Mogul is the best.
Each of them has a demo, so I’d check them both out.
Oh my gosh

to really enjoy BM though
you have to make “integrity rules”, like “no fair trading 7 scrubs for chase utley”, and “no fair trading an ace pitcher who is on the DL for 279 days who is in the last year of his contract for prospects”, and “management of minor leaguers should be done IAW the MLB rules and not what BM lets you get away with”.
Otherwise it’s pretty easy to build a team that wins 100+ games, year aftert year after year.

I’m thinking the faster pace might keep me more engaged, at least initially, so maybe Baseball Mogul is the way to go. Will check them both out though – appreciate it.
I gather you’re making contract decisions with your roster, making and taking trade offers from other organizations in the sim, right? If so, I’m assuming you are pretty pleased with how realistic it all feels to you? We’re not talking about an X-Box level here, where you could offer 3 pieces of garbage to land a younger all-star, etc?

Ok...
assuming it’s two “young” guys off the active roster, who are the legitimate possibilities?
Motte
Boggs
Freese
Greene
Craig
Jay
Salas
Garcia and Rasmus are too good; Ryan and Hawksworth aren’t good enough.
Freese and Boggs are probably the most valuable, followed by Motte, then Craig, then Greene/Jay/Salas.
I’d be sad to lose both Freese and one of Motte/Boggs, but if it could be just one those plus a lesser guy, that would be ok. I don’t think Houston would throw in much cash for this caliber of prospect(s) but I bet Oswalt will forgo or rearrange the option year.
Fire La Russa!
I hope and pray that we trade Kyle McClellan in this deal, if it happens.
I would be incredibly happy if we did this and replaced him with Salas permanently.

we are not trading our starting third baseman
for freeze alone houston would have to send a prospect with oswalt if they are not paying any of his salary.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I would personally try and keep Lopez there for the next few years.
But then again, I like Lopez more than most people and am not too high on Freese, especially in the power department.

I dunno that's still a lot of talent to give up,
Freese in particular who seems to have established himself as a starting caliber major leaguer and will be free for the next few years.

The Cardinals easily have all those things...
and what’s more, Roy O is in command of the situation with his NTC, and he wants to come here. He can basically force the Astros to trade him to the Cardinals, and he can make the trade palatable to us by restructuring his contract.
The liklihood of this happening seems quite high to me.
Fire La Russa!
correct me if i'm wrong
but a NTC give the player the right to veto a trade, not pick precisely to what team and for what players he is traded for. Correct?
"...football games always make me thankful for two things:

Yes...
but he can put the Astros in the position of taking the Cardinal’s offer or not trading him. That gives us good leverage. Plus we don’t even need them to help with his salary since he can do that on his own, if he’s so inclined.
Fire La Russa!
i was being semi-sarcastic--you're right
if roy oswalt wants to pitch in st louis, he’s going to get to pitch in st louis. the two things holding the cardinals back from this are not wanting to trade shelby miller and $$$. oswalt can take care of the $$$ part all by himself. and if he is unhappy in houston and about to tank on the, the astros might lower their price and dump his salary.
though what they really need to do is dump carlos lee’s salary. that contract was absolutely hideous. NO ONE will take that on though.

This missive compares Lee’s trade value against some of the other worst contracts in baseball.
The conclusion? The only contract close to being as bad is Zambrano’s, and the Cubs still wouldn’t make that deal.
I'm out of champagna. How about some 7-Up and Mad Dog 20/20?

we have two choices
acquire oswalt for basically nothing and pay his salary, or send talent to reduce the money – the more we want the stros to pay, the more we send, all the way up to shelby miller if we really don’t want to take on much financial obligation.

Man, we sure did a number on the Phils
Took 3 of 4. Sent one of their pitchers down, and got their Hitting Coach fired. Not bad

Two pitchers, in fact.
Kendrick went down for Carpenter, then Carpenter went down for AA guy Vance Worley.

Think Drayton is cursing his own existense?
Can’t figure out why he couldn’t spend his way out of this mess, can’t figure out why he is out of money and may have to send the greatest player in franchise history to the team he probably hates the most for Allen Craig and Jon Jay.

I think you mean Ed Wade,
but they are practically interchangeable.
Asshattery: it's an epidemic.
Also, Dave Concepcion.
jeff bagwell or craig biggio?
because I like Biggio in a platoon arrangement in which he only hits at Minute Maid.
In fairness
Oswalt does hold the highest WAR total for an Astros pitcher.

If we empty our bench
Getting rid of Craig and Jay, for the love of God can we release Miles so TLR doesn’t have more reasons to use him?

aww, the P-D forums are trying to talk about stats
it’s so cute
ERA doesn’t mean anything in this case. Fielding Independant [sic] ERA would mean more, and I think Bernie posted today in his bytes that that stat was quite good, possibly Oswalts [sic] best in his career this year.

i think they just want players who can contribute in the majors right away
because they probably think they can compete next year (or get back in it this year – haha)
