Game 96: Overflow Thread

Motte and Boggs both with 2 inning efforts. Remember this the next time we're told we need a long reliever.

Aaron Miles 0-for-4 out of the leadoff spot. Try to forget this.

baseball mogul is great

it’s less in-depth than Out of the Park, the other popular one, but the interface is more intuitive. Basically, if you’d like to sim a day at a time, deal with the 40-man, play the rule 5 draft, you’ll probably prefer OOTP; if you want to build up a dynasty and sim a week or a month or years at a time, Baseball Mogul is the best.

Each of them has a demo, so I’d check them both out.

to really enjoy BM though

you have to make “integrity rules”, like “no fair trading 7 scrubs for chase utley”, and “no fair trading an ace pitcher who is on the DL for 279 days who is in the last year of his contract for prospects”, and “management of minor leaguers should be done IAW the MLB rules and not what BM lets you get away with”.

Otherwise it’s pretty easy to build a team that wins 100+ games, year aftert year after year.

I gather you’re making contract decisions with your roster, making and taking trade offers from other organizations in the sim, right? If so, I’m assuming you are pretty pleased with how realistic it all feels to you? Today wouldn't be a day that we'd use our long relievers though

Waaaaay to close, no team in the game is gonna trust their long relievers tied 0-0. We had to use our aces, so I don’t mind Boggs and Motte each pitching two innings.

Ok...

assuming it’s two “young” guys off the active roster, who are the legitimate possibilities?

Motte
Boggs
Freese
Greene
Craig
Jay
Salas

Garcia and Rasmus are too good; Ryan and Hawksworth aren’t good enough.

Freese and Boggs are probably the most valuable, followed by Motte, then Craig, then Greene/Jay/Salas.

I’d be sad to lose both Freese and one of Motte/Boggs, but if it could be just one those plus a lesser guy, that would be ok. I don’t think Houston would throw in much cash for this caliber of prospect(s) but I bet Oswalt will forgo or rearrange the option year.

I hope and pray that we trade Kyle McClellan in this deal, if it happens.

I would be incredibly happy if we did this and replaced him with Salas permanently.

just b/c he’s arb eligible and not particularly young. I commented earlier that he should become a starter or be non-tendered. Houston is going to want that.

we are not trading our starting third baseman

for freeze alone houston would have to send a prospect with oswalt if they are not paying any of his salary.

But then again, I like Lopez more than most people and am not too high on Freese, especially in the power department.

Freese in particular who seems to have established himself as a starting caliber major leaguer and will be free for the next few years.

this whole oswalt thing isn't actually happening, right?

by stlcardinalsfang on Jul 22, 2010 10:24 PM EDT reply actions

The Cardinals easily have all those things...

and what’s more, Roy O is in command of the situation with his NTC, and he wants to come here. He can basically force the Astros to trade him to the Cardinals, and he can make the trade palatable to us by restructuring his contract.

The liklihood of this happening seems quite high to me.

depends

by Evilfrog on Jul 22, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes...

but he can put the Astros in the position of taking the Cardinal’s offer or not trading him. That gives us good leverage. Plus we don’t even need them to help with his salary since he can do that on his own, if he’s so inclined.

i was being semi-sarcastic--you're right

if roy oswalt wants to pitch in st louis, he’s going to get to pitch in st louis. the two things holding the cardinals back from this are not wanting to trade shelby miller and $$$. oswalt can take care of the $$$ part all by himself. and if he is unhappy in houston and about to tank on the, the astros might lower their price and dump his salary.

though what they really need to do is dump carlos lee’s salary. that contract was absolutely hideous. NO ONE will take that on though.

by stlcardinalsfang on Jul 22, 2010 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions

This missive compares Lee’s trade value against some of the other worst contracts in baseball.

The conclusion? The only contract close to being as bad is Zambrano’s, and the Cubs still wouldn’t make that deal.

we have two choices

acquire oswalt for basically nothing and pay his salary, or send talent to reduce the money – the more we want the stros to pay, the more we send, all the way up to shelby miller if we really don’t want to take on much financial obligation.
