Our Long National (Get It?) Nightmare is Over
Morning, all.
I'm sick. In fact, I'm a little more than sick. Short of death, for the moment anyway, but more than sick. My mother has had something awful for the past two weeks or so, and in the course of trying to help her out while she convalesces I'm fairly certain she gave me whatever she had. I rarely get sick, but this thing is absolutely brutalizing me at the moment.
Unfortunately, this puts me in a bad position. I took off work today, sat down at the computer thinking I could at least get some writing done, and I don't think I'm even going to be able to do that. I started writing a scouting report on the Cards' two Futures Game participants for the RFT (spoiler alert: they both looked really good), but I don't know if I'm going to get it done or not. What I do know is that I literally don't have the energy to type. How pathetic is that?
So, as much as I hate to do it, here's a relatively open thread for you guys. I'm sorry about this; I actually had an idea, which is rare for me when I sit down at the computer. But, so it goes. Topics for discussion include: how awesome it is to know when our Cardinals arrive in the World Series they will be playing game one right here in St. Louis, how you feel about George Steinbrenner (though that may have been covered yesterday; I haven't read any of the threads so I don't know), what we should expect from the Cards in the second half, who Mo needs to get off his duff and trade for, who shouldn't be on this roster at all -- cough wholemiddleinfield cough -- and what a crime it is Fresca isn't available in soda fountains very often. (Oh, and the coughs around "whole middle infield" weren't attempts to be discreet. I'm just coughing a lot. Our middle infield sucks. All of them.)
Happy All-Star Victory Day, everyone! Huzzah!

So...this time it counts, huh?
Awesome! Hopefully our guys can right the ship in the second half. I can’t believe that I was in high school the last time the NL won an All-Star game. Pretty crazy.
Although I’m happy with the outcome, I still absolutely despise the All-Star game and how it tries to be everything to everyone. Here is a pretty decent summary of last night’s game and the absurdity that comes along with having fans pick the starters, having someone from every team named an All-Star, trying to get all your players a little “face time,” all while “managing to win” because “this time it counts.” Just. Dumb.

Yeah, I think it was only Lilly too

Didn't Lilly smirk at the boos?

I love the ASG
and making the games count has definitely improved them. I watched from start to finish and I didn’t think any of the issues you mention are a downside. I liked the three outfielders’ celebration at the end of the game.
I thought the whole game was great and the last four years have been very entertaining
Just win
Glad you enjoy(ed) it...
and sort of joking here, but I didn’t know they still made people who enjoyed the MLB All-Star game ;-)
Seriously though, I love MLB’s version more than any of the other major sports’ games. However, to me, it just seems like they try to please everyone and it just ends up as a big mess. If it “counts,” fine, but don’t leave the starting rosters up to fans. And by definition, aren’t the “starters” supposed to be the best players? Why yank them just to get some (generally) inferior player into a game that has so much riding on it? Why the need for everyone to “get a turn” and before that, why the need for all of these guys anyway?
To me, if you want the best players deciding it, how ’bout people who know the game be put in charge of actually selecting a roster of the best players (no consideration for representing every team, no need to have 10 yr olds voting 25 times for Jose Reyes or whoever, etc.), maybe actually select OFs by their real position (and not assume all OFs are interchangeable), and then let those guys play, save for some late-inning matchups/substitutions? It would be an intense, competitive game and would require the managers to actually manage their rosters.
Again, I’m happy you enjoyed it (and I certainly enjoyed the win….even found myself pumping my fist when Byrd gunned down Papi), but I just think it could be improved in a sort of “addition by subtraction”-type manner. I think the line in that article I linked above captures what I’m getting at:
MLB keeps changing the rules and what-not, but “somehow the first 72 All-Star Games came off just fine with normal rules.”
I Don't Care Mooch...
…for any All-Star, All-Pro, or whatever-type of game. They tend to be boring affairs contrived solely for marketing reasons. Although I have to say the basketball all-star game is the moost pointless of all. “Tradition” seems to be the main bugbear for carrying such meaningless activities when we no longer have a real reason to do so. Back in the day the AS game was ok because it got players from both leagues playing each udder when the only chance they might get is during the WS. Interleague play has negated that as an issue. And u can tell many of the players don’t care when u see cow many either opt out of playing the games or the goofy activities (dunking contest? HR derby? What, no Punt/Pass/Kick cowpetition??) associated with it – getting healthy and having some time off being far moore useful.
:=8/
Big McLargehuge!
:=8O
Starters vs scrubs
They are all great players — subbing Gonzalez for Pujols doesn’t really materially change your chance of winning for only one game. I’m willing to concede the fiction that “it counts” but we need to play everyone. Both things can be true if managed well and I think each year the game has counted, managers have started managing more to win. You can see that now with true relief pitchers coming into pitch late in the game. You could see it last night with Manuel choosing to use Waino in a relief role because of his former role int he bullpen.
Rolen goes form first to third on a tough play. Byrd makes a great defensive play. I thought it was great.
Just win
When I read this
My mind made the jump from “Rolen and Byrd” to “Rockin Robin”. Sad, I know. But those were both indeed awesome plays.

I probably like the ASG mainly because of fond memories of it as a kid

It was really awesome to see Adam as a closer type again - flashes of 2006
I loved the close-ups of him when the pressure was on – dude has absolute ice in his veins. If you ask me he doesn’t need to work on his “serious” Carp impression for the upcoming movie, at least under those circumstances. It’s crazy that I’m sitting at home sweating, knots tied in my stomach, while A.D.A.M. is up there cool as a cucumber on the mound.
Because
A.D.A.M. knows the outcome before he even delivers the pitch. Sometimes I think he puts runners on just to humiliate the opposing batter, who then limps back to the dugout with the terrible knowledge his BA with RISP just dropped.

I was totally gonna make the "national nightmare" joke, RB
Thanks for being a stealer.
Anyway. So great to finally see the NL win the game, even with all its warts and silliness. And a couple Cardinals made key contributions, also great to see.
Anyway, did anyone see the performance by that Pujols guy? He was totally hitless the entire game! That’s really gonna kill his trade value, on a big stage like that. Yessir.
Albert Pujols does not have "down" years. He has "~6 WAR" years.
I'm digging through quotes... almost ready to post
had to laugh over this… need a side-by-side of Cholly negates Ichiro’s speech!
[fake blockquote]
Instead, it all started with a motivational pre-game speech from manager Charlie Manuel. Which, given the way he botched the pronunciations of a handful of names on his roster with his thick West Virginia drawl a day earlier, is always a dangerous thing.
Was there, um, cursing?
“Oh, I don’t know,” the wry Rolen said. “It’s kind of our culture. I only notice it at home.”
“Charlie’s interesting, man,” said Atlanta’s Hudson, an Alabama native. "I might have been the only one in here who could understand him.
“He just said the players in here are good, we know how to play the game, now let’s go win this son of a bitch.”
“He told us he was a hitting coach 12 years ago on the AL team when Joe Torre was the manager,” Padres closer Heath Bell said. "He said when Joe was talking, Ichiro Suzuki came out of nowhere and said, ’Let’s go kick their ass.’
“He said, ‘Well, now I’m going to say it: Let’s go kick their ass!’”

So who does Mo (cough) trade for?
In reality, now: What possible moves are there to make upgrades? Do we really want Mo to bring in, say, Uggla (who is probably available and might be better defensively if he uses a Skip-sized 2b mitt – not)? Is there a “for real” option? I can’t think of one. We may be stuck with our MIF (please be kidnapped by gypsies, Aaron Miles!) for the season…

If I were in a band of gypsies,
I would advise NOT to attempt to kidnap Aaron Miles, given his history of resisting being taken captive.

I'm not as in the MIF boat as much as most
Once we get healthy, put Lopez at 2nd for most of the time, Boog/Greene at SS, and Freese at 3B.
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
That's the thing...
in theory, we shouldn’t have the MULTIPLE “black holes” on offense once Freese is reinstalled at 3B. I mean, we can live with regular lineup that includes a glove-first SS.
Of course, this line of thinking assumes that Freese will bounce back soon (and hit well when he returns).
We have a glove-first catcher, too, though, and he’s not performing like he has in past years. When you have 3 black holes, including the pitcher’s spot, that’s a lot of runs and production you are giving up and it puts even more pressure on our big guys.
Yadi will come around.
His approach is solid. It’s not like he’s swinging at garbage pitches and striking out a lot.

Whoops!
Chone projections from July onwards:
Escobar slash stats – .289/.368/.412
Gonzalez slash stats – .248/.291/.405
Escobar R150 – 6
Gonzalez R150 – -12
Escobar WAR – 3.6 (!)
Gonzalez WAR – 0.7 (!!)
So we know that Escobar’s projections will be lower because he’s in the AL and Gonzalez will be a better because of the NL, but…wowzers.
Adios Esposito.

Or are we all thinking this is the real Boog going forward?

I find it a bit disappointing that this site generally....
chalks up Boog’s issues to “mental issues,” “pressing,” etc. It seems that whenever its convenient for a guy that’s well liked, we find non-stats based excuses for their performance. This is not much different than “grit” and “heart” and other fluffy explanations for success.
The fact is that Boog is not a very good offensive player. He never really has been. And, just like other bad offensive players, he has nagging injuries, or is recovering from injuries, or has made multiple adjustments to try to fix the fact that he’s not a very good hitter. These excuses can be applied to just about every other player that we reduce to their stats and call crappy.
I sure hope he starts not sucking for the team ‘s sake, as well as because he’s always been a favorite of mine, but it won’t surprise me when his line at the end of the season does not look much different than it does now.

to be fair, the stats-based excuse is an unsustainably low BABIP
which is a kind of boring thing to talk about
אנא טוני לא יותר ט.א.ס.ס
unsustainable over what time period? It's certainly sustainable over a year, aka, long enough to get Boog benched, or worse, and to significantly hurt the team's chances to make the playoffs
what is Ryan’s xBABIP? I bet it’s somewhat lower than league average.
And, in any event, what if you moved his BABIP to .300 or .315? He’d still suck because it’s all singles-based. The bottom line is that BABIP fluctuates, and when you’re a crappy singles hitter like Boog, your performance is permanently subject to such vicissitudes.

"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
Okay then - here you go
Per Hardball Times
his career major league babip was .317 heading into 09. I’d expect a similar production here. if you move his babip to .315, he’s still somewhat subpar offensively, but only slightly if at all below average for a shortstop, which is hopefully made up for by his defense if he can get it together.
(and for the record, although he hits plenty of groundballs, he has a healthy line drive rate… although i can’t find xbabip anywhere through my cursory google search, i’d expect it to remain around .315)
אנא טוני לא יותר ט.א.ס.ס
im not very familiar with minor league stats translating to MLB

i didn't realize
we were talking about boog. i guess i assumed we were talking about greene. though, yes, if player x had a BABIP around .315 in the PCL, they would probably have one around .300 in MLB. boog has a lot of speed, so he could probably sustain .315 in MLB, but that is hugely predicated on him making solid contact. if he keeps going like he’s going lately, then he has no chance of that. he’s been unlucky, but i think he’s also been letting that get to him and he’s not been performing at the level he could be
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
I'm saying the mental issues are as a result of him struggling offensively.
And if he can keep from ruining his mind, I believe he can fix whatever mechanical flaws there are in his swing, stance, etc. to allow himself to get back to a .270ish hitter.

The FOX gun worked!
>Pitcher Change: Felipe Lopez replaces Ryan Franklin, batting 7th, replacing third baseman Felipe Lopez
Adam Wainwright reaches on force attempt, throwing error by Aaron Heilman. Jaime Garcia scores. Brendan Ryan to 3rd. Adam Wainwright to 2nd. None out.
I don't recall Price being able to throw 99
Or Josh Johnson, for that matter. I blew off the FOX gun until I saw Halladay and Waino were both topped around 94, as we’d expect.
Can Price and JJ really throw darts like that?
According to Bernie's recap, Wainwright hit 96 and 97.
If that’s the case, I would think that the gun was 2 to 3 MPH over.
If Strasburg was out there, you would’ve seen 102.
by Ghostrider520 on Jul 14, 2010 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions
i must've missed those 97mph waino pitches
makes sense though. i’ve always thought of price and jj as solid 95-96 types. FFOX
Josh Johnson throws 98 99
He’s the 3rd hardest throwing starter in the game.
Remember when we see these relievers throwing 97-98…..they were almost all failed starters. If they could have done that while starting, then they would be starters. Johnson and the like throw much harder than most relievers.
Not afraid to nitpick
According to Gameday
over at MLB.com, Johnson started off throwing 96 mph fastballs, and, with each batter, he threw harder, topping out at 99 once in the third. Then he was 97-99 in the fourth with a 90 mph “changeup.” Gameday also has Price in the high 90s, touching 100 mph.
"I'm gonna throw the nastiest curveball I have ever thrown...if he hits it, I'll tip my cap, but if not we're going to the Series."
--Adam Wainwright on the final pitch of the 2006 NLCS
Like I said last night
It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Fox juiced the gun for Price’s 1st inning, but everyone else made sense—-Josh Johnson throws a 88 mph changeup usually. These are hard throwing starters pacing themselves to throw 20 pitches instead of 115.
Not afraid to nitpick
Yeah, that's a key point.
They are more likely to let it loose for a short outing.

That's why I really didn't question it too much.
I figured with Waino that it was the adrenaline that was making him buzz it in harder than normal. His curves were still nasty but looked like he might have over-thrown them a bit, at least to me and I’m hardly the greatest judge of such things.

altering the numbers for the first pitcher only? you think there’s a MPH-adjustment dial in the production truck?

1st inning—-look everyone, we have guys throwing 100 mph keep watching!
Price doesn’t throw 100, he didn’t come close to that when he actually was a reliever……..in the playoffs!
Not afraid to nitpick
but it's not like they don't want to keep people watching
makes more sense that they would artificially inflate all of the speeds
they just have issues and need to inflate stuff.

If anything, Ubaldo was lower than I thought he’d be. Price was so far out of any expected zone and then basically everyone else was within ~1 mph of their usual top end…
Not afraid to nitpick
Top end, not average
Wainwright touches 94 or even 95 sometimes almost every game and pitches with his 2-seamer at 89 a lot to drag down the average, it’s not surprising to see him hit 96 a few times in relief.
David Price touches 97, and touched 97 when he was in relief…..closing out playoff games with more adrenaline than an ASG could possibly provide, hitting 100 is not something he is capable of.
Not afraid to nitpick
if he touches 97 now and he also did that when he was in relief
is it possible that he’s gotten stronger? That seems plausible to me.
Hurler Camp?
Not to be confused w/Dinger Camp.

20 year olds usually get weaker, not stronger
In the case of pitchers, they definitely are supposed to lose velocity.
by vivaelpujols on Jul 14, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions
For fastball velocity?
I’m guessing around 21
by vivaelpujols on Jul 14, 2010 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions
so...
waino typically touches 94, hit 96 in ASG
price typically touches 97, hit 100 is ASG
this is implausible because price never hit 100 back in 2008?
Waino typically touches 94-95 and was pitching at 94-96
Price typically touches 97, and was pitching at 98-100.
Yeah, that’s fishy.
Not afraid to nitpick
I think it makes sense
when they knew they were only going 1-2 innings. Most starters who go to the pen experience a jump in velocity – they were all relievers last night.
Carry the battle to them. Don't let them bring it to you. Put them on the defensive and don't ever apologize for anything.
Probably they had Price throwing 100
And they realized that if they left the gun where it was, Ubaldo would end up throwing something unrealistic like 103 the next half inning, so they dialed it down.
...and was visibly putting more effort into every pitch he threw than you see when he starts
Not afraid to nitpick
Still, his sliders in the games top out at 86. He threw one at 91 MPH in the ASG, I have to think that's a Pitch f/x error

"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
He's gone to more of a cutter this year and is averaging 86
I know I’ve seen him top out at 88 with it.
Not afraid to nitpick
well yeah

Long time, no post.
Hello gents and Rasmus girls. Been a while since I’ve posted on a thread. In the last couple months, I’ve moved out of the very Cardinals-friendly Springfield, Mo., to the rather Cardinals-ambivalent Hot Springs, Ark. There’s a local AM station that sometimes broadcasts Mike and John, but I’ve found it frustratingly inconsistent at times. And unless the local NBC affiliate picks up the KSDK broadcasts or the team is on FOX, the television broadcasts are blacked out. Even this far south.
Anyway, a lot has changed in that time. I was excited at the start of the season with the youth movement gamble (having seen a lot of the players spend time in Springfield), but fast forward a few months and Randy Winn is patrolling the outfield and Suppan is on the mound. The offense seemed like it was just starting to click going into the break, and I hope that the days off won’t extinguish that. It probably will.
As much as I dislike the Yankees and the escalating salaries, I am glad to have lived in the Steinbrenner era, because without him, we probably wouldn’t have Derek Jeter’s Taco Hole, the best sports-related SNL skit that I can remember. All kidding aside, Jeter will always be my favorite Yank to have played in my time.
In moving, I quite my job at the Business Journal in Springfield and am solely freelancing right now. I’ve been working on my portfolio site and added a few photos I thought you all would appreciate.

Sorry to know that about the Hot Springs affiliate
You may be able to pick up 105.5 FM (“Thunder Country”) out of Danville or 690 AM out of Benton. The Danville station carries pretty well up and down I-40. I don’t know about over the hills to H.S. They don’t miss many games, mostly just Fridays in the fall when it’s “Danville Little Johns” football time (yes, that’s right fans, I said the Little Johns).
Arkansas used to be a much stronger Cardinals territory. It started going downhill before then, but the change of affiliation of the Travelers to the Angels really hurt things and then when the Naturals (KC system) moved into Springdale it got worse. Now the northwest corner is more KC than StL and there are a lot of Rangers fans in central and southern Arkansas.

Is it just me, or does Greinke saying "I try to keep my FIP low" not really mean anything to you?
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/looking-at-greinkes-fastball/#comments
How does that make him a “smart” pitcher? Every pitcher knows that homeruns = bad, strikeouts = good, walks = bad.
I'd imagine it's strange as a pitcher to give up on the idea that you can control most balls put in play
I would think most all pitchers intuitively know this
you throw great pitches all the time that result in bloop hits or perfectly-placed grounders through the hole.
And pitchers most especially know that if you have a crappy defense, you better strike every one out, cause if they hit it, they won’t be out.
by Willie McGee's Twin on Jul 14, 2010 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions
But Greinke never said that
Bannister said that. Greinke just said he likes FIP, which he should, because it rewards good things and punished bad things. I haven’t seen any reason to believe that Greinke actually buys into the idea of DIPS or that he particularity cares about it (guys with his talent don’t have to be strategic like Bannister, they just have to let if fly).

Also while researching Gibson on wikipedia, I got a link to pitchers who have struck out the side on 9 pitches, because he was one of them and I got possibly the greatest collection of names in one inning from it:
Here and go down to the only instance where it happened in extra innings.
I feel I should use an old timey radio announcer voice:
The year was 1923, and the white sox of chicago were facing the hated athletics of philly. A one Sloppy Thurston struck out the side on 9 pitches against Beauty McGowan, Chick Galloway, and Sammy Hale.
My first thought was, wow what great names, my second thought was, how did I not know about this guy and use this as a nickname for Joe Thurston.

I think the only games that Randolph sees are the one where he tries to broadcast.
He doesn’t know anyone’s name. He only has information about the Cardinals that he get’s in the pre-game meeting. I’m sure he’s a nice man but not good at this job at all.
"I told myself from the very beginning: 'If he's going to throw a shutout, then he's going to tie,'" Wainwright said. "He was not going to beat me today."
he;s absolutely awful
he’s terrible at calling the game and he’s constantly making factual errors

etc
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
people don't like Al and Horton (who I actually do like) because of their personalities
but Jay Randolph is actually incompetent. It’s like, you might dislike Milton Bradley as your team’s starting DH because he’s a jerk, but you’d dislike Aaron Miles as your starting DH because he can’t do his job.

The three innings that Jay and Shannon are together in the booth...
…are the longest three innings of the baseball week. Shannon is kind of all over the place in the booth anyway, and then you put Randolph in there and it turns into a three inning conversation about… well… anything other than what is actually happening in the game. I just mute it whenever Shannon’s in there. The other six innings of Jay ’N Rick are only marginally better, like a test score of 54% instead of 49%. You failed with flying colors either way.

we're hoping for defenestration.
but really, I think he enjoys tweaking. it’s the highlight of his night.

i still think dan is a damn good announcer
when he doesn’t have to put up with those two. when he does other sports, or even college baseball, he is really quite nice in the booth. i just wish they would pair him up with eldred
I am pleasantly pleased, thankyouverymuch
I have no problem w/ Dan
He’s pretty business-like IMO and would prefer to just call the game and do a good job. Al is ________ (insert adjective of choice) and Horton’s just lousy. I think Dan would be 1/2 of a fine broadcasting team if he weren’t with one of those two on a nightly basis. I don’t know how he can sit next to Al without his skin curling up and melting.

I wonder if Vince is still available?
Y2S, Get Fredbird and the van to kidnap Al and Rick and we’ll insert Vince. Maybe no one will care enough to actually notice.

i stumbled onto something earlier today that said joey votto hated the cubs and refused to shake hands with them after the victory. and i thought WE hated the cubs…
already had a discussion about that up there ^^
clif notes: it was a douchey move. also, joey votto has a child-like first name.

well.... how much hate does it take for that to completely dwarf reasonable anyalsis?
apparantly, yunel escobar is so UNLIKED at talking chop, they are trying to convince people (well like 2 or 3) that Alex Gonzalez will be better going forward than Alex Gonzalez… and that this is a WIN NOW move (kinda weird that they would make SS position worse)
