I don't blame em
No point in starting his service clock. The real question is why is he not in AAA yet.
Not afraid to nitpick
oh yeah, somehow I thought he was playing for a semi-contending team...
I suppose the Royals are right to keep him in the minors another year, but not having him at the highest level is bizarre unless they’re trying to fix something (which I doubt)
אנא טוני לא יותר ט.א.ס.ס
AAA isn't necessarily the highest level for where he's at
Usually that’s where the AAAA guys with shitty stuff reside, he’ll probably see better “stuff” in AA. But he’s obviously proven that he can handle it so yeah….don’t ask me.
Not afraid to nitpick
historically that's been true, at least the last decades
about AAA vs.AA as per the competition level because of the AAAA guys stockpiled in AAA, but that’s been changing the last years – memphis used to look like a clearinghouse for 30-something 4A guys, but not so much anymore, and the cards were on the tail end of this movement.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Random thought
They are commenting on how much good young pitching is coming through……wouldn’t an obvious answer to that be this is the first real generation where pitch counts have dominated the discussion?
Not afraid to nitpick
But Nolan Ryan says pitch counts are stupid!
Also, Al Hrabosky used to throw 250-pitch side sessions and wants you to get the hell off his lawn!

2/3 of an inning. wtf.
Did it seem to anyone else that he needs to increase his stride a bit? Might have been the camera angle, but it seemed like (to my completely unqualified eyeball) he could have been putting a lot more into his delivery than he was.

Bourn's highest steal total in the minors was 58
although he was only caught 6 times, I was talking about Eric Young Jr he had walk rates of 11.8, 7.5, 12.8, and 10.1 in full MiLB seasons to go with SB totals of 87, 73, 46, 58
his defense is shaky but if he matches anywhere near his career MiLB wOBA of .375 somebody will put up with his occasional booted grounder
Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students
Bourn in the minors had 1812 PA with a career 12.5 walk rate
164 steals and 28 caught stealing. He also had a .285/.378/.392 line.
EY2 so far has 2648 PA with a 11.0 walk rate, 306 steals and 90 caught stealing. He had a .292/.383/.413 line.
IMO the two are very similar. EY2 has more steals and a tiny bit more power, but he’s also gotten caught stealing a lot more.
Bourne so far has had a .314 wOBA in the bigs, which is about what you’d expect given his line in the minors. He’s maintained his stolen base ability with 61 in 2009 and on pace for nearly that this year. He’s played good defense in center, so overall he’s been pretty valuable.
Why do you think EY2 will be any better than Bourn has been in the bigs?
by vivaelpujols on Jul 12, 2010 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions
well, if he's only as good as bourn
and that at second base, wish we had him.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
But EY2, as Tomcat said, is a bad defender
Whereas Bourn is an excellent defender.
EY2’s career MLE in the minors is for a .567 OPS! His best season has a raw .821 OPS and that came with a .346 BABIP in the PCL.
He’s shown good plate disicpline and obviously has excellent speed, but he appears to have absolutely no power and strikes out a lot. When you combine that with bad defense (I don’t know if that is the case, but that’s what TomCat said) that’s basically Emilio Bonifacio.
At this point, I would take Greene, Skip and Lopez ahead of him.

Yes. But Bourn is a ++ defender and according to Tomcat, EY2 is a bad defender.

shaky not neccesarily a lost cause
a ground ball heavy staff like the Rockies would rather see Barmes at 2B no doubt
Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students
to me he is destined for a utility spot
at least on the Rockies I see Nelson as either the SS that pushes Tulo to 3rd or as the 2B of the future, EY2 has a high BABIP everywhere he goes so a .346 does not concern me his lowest BABIP in the minors is .340
and to say that bourn is at a .313 wOBA and act like that is his true talent level when he has seasons of .348 and .342 under his belt is a disingenuous as your saying that Cargo has a .323 OBP in his career(which is .005 lower than Rasmus)
Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students
...
BABIP is always higher in the minors due to worse defense, worse field conditions and worse pitchers. It needs to be MLE’d more than anything else.
You know what’s even more disingenuous than saying Bourn has a career .313 wOBA? Saying that 133 PA in 2007 counts as a “season” and is particularly relevant going forward. Over his last three full seasons (514 PA in 08, 678 PA in 09 and 355 PA so far this year), Bourn has wOBAs of .276, .342 and .309. His ZIPS projection is for .318.
by vivaelpujols on Jul 12, 2010 1:50 AM EDT up reply actions
so Bourns BABIP for the last 4 years
.335/330/290/366/323 one of those is different and it resulted in his numbers falling off a cliff to a 67wRC+ which might color his projections a bit
Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students
Okay and the .366 BABIP in his 110 wRC+ season might color his projections as well
Overall, ZIPS projects him to have a .326 BABIP going forward, which sounds about right to me.
Are you really going to argue that Michael fucking Bourn doesn’t suck as a hitter? I mean the guy is 28 and has over 1500 plate appearances in the bigs. His career numbers are pretty close to what we should expect of him going forward.
by vivaelpujols on Jul 12, 2010 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions
what I am arguing is that
projections are shite, yes they have some validity but they are shite.
Find me a projection on Vernon Wells, Alexis Rios, or Jose Bautista from this spring what do you want to bet they aren’t worth the virtual ink it took to write them
Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students
Projections are what you'd expect of a player if he doesn't experiaence any large changes in his skillset year to year
So for a guy like Bautista, who has now clearly changed something in his approach, of course the projections aren’t going to be particularity good.
But what, has Bourn changed something drastically in his approach this year that makes you think his projections are misreading him? He’s hitting and playing just like he always has.
by vivaelpujols on Jul 12, 2010 2:15 AM EDT up reply actions
you seem to think we are arguing about
Bourn I am arguing about projections and how you seem willing to discard data that doesn’t fit with on of your pre-concieved notions
Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students
Um what?
I told you exactly what I think of projections – they are good for players who haven’t really changed their approach and have a good samples worth of at bats in the majors. They are not particularly good for players who have had drastic differences in their approach or a limited number of at bats in the majors.
I wouldn’t trust projections much for Rasmus. I would trust them slightly more for Cargo (he has a larger sample size of at bats in the majors) and I would place a lot of confidence in them for Bourn.
Also, show examples of my disenegnousness or shut the fuck up.

Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students
and Zips has Colby at a
.265/.340/.447 line with 9 HRs from here on out do you want to take the over or under on that?
Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students
Unrelated to Bourn
Rasmus is 23 years old and scouts out great. Furthermore, he only has ~800 PA in the bigs. So of course a projection system using his past stats isn’t going to be very good.
Bourn on the other hand is 28 and has twice as many plate appearances as Raz.
by vivaelpujols on Jul 12, 2010 2:08 AM EDT up reply actions
and those 800 PA are all different
and dynamic
Last year Carlos Gonzalez had a better BB% rate and a worse K% than Colby this year they have flipped
Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students
I was trying to illustrate a point
Rasmus gets a lot of love arouI am using the fact thatnd here as a future MVP type and that seems fine by you(or at least I don’t remember you doing so) but you have on more than a few occasions spoke up about how you don’t understand why people are in love with Cargo
Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students
My entire point was that Cargo's numbers this year were not worthy of being an All Star
The Rockies were talking about him being a massive snub, whereas at the time he had a .350 wOBA playing half his games in Coors.
By the same though I thought people weren’t giving Rasmus his due when he was putting up a .400+ wOBA a couple of weeks ago.
by vivaelpujols on Jul 12, 2010 2:34 AM EDT up reply actions
I would say that's probably not too far from reality
He’s striking out way too much and I doubt as a flyball hitter he’s really going to keep up the .360 BABIP.
Not afraid to nitpick
yeah but do you think he will
keep up a 30% K rate? I think those two will largely offset each other and if Colby slugs .447 from here on out I would be very surprised

I’m not sure I screw with Boggs right now. Sanchez and Salas should both be contributors in the bigs soon though. I hope it’s with the Cardinals.
Silly humans, this world is for robots.
Boggs should be a starter at some point, though.
He’s got a ton of potential if his stuff can translate at all from the bullpen. Maybe this offseason, he can make the transition? Seems like there are plenty of live arms to replace him in the pen but I agree that I would be skeptical to interrupt his current success.

He's always been an enigma in that way though.
His stuff looks great (even as a starter) but the results as a starter never matched. I’m not sure if it was a sequencing thing or a command thing but it never quite translated. He looks SOOOO good in the pen that I suspect he gets the McClellan treatment for a while.
Silly humans, this world is for robots.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I had not seen Boggs pitch in the minors and only saw him once he reached the majors.
But to me, his motion looks a little off. It’s almost like he throws across his body. I think his mechanics play much better out of the pen because over a longer appearance (like a start), he may be unable to consistently repeat those mechanics, especially as he gets more tired, leading to a lack of command.
As well, his lack of a good 3rd pitch and his increased velocity out of the pen make him a better fit there.

Shelby Miller is really really exciting. His movement is just so irresistibly easy and his fastball has that Duncan-ready sink.
