yes, i do

he wasn’t a colbyesque centerfielder, but he was adequate. that was back then, and he really doesn’t have the range to do it now – winn is a better center fielder, even at his age, because in his prime he was much better than luddy in center, and probably still has more range – well, i suppose that’s a large reason why winn is here. but luddy is very good in right.

i dont have a problem with Tony

just the decision. Especially considering the shape of our rotation – need to let Carp and Waino pitch a few more innings.

The time

for me difference is annoying, and difficult to comment. The game was on for me this morning, and I was watching gameday (not enough bandwidth for mlb.tv). Then I had to go to work about the 5th inning, and even less bandwidth, I couldn’t even get gameday. I had to go to mlb.com, then scoreboard, and then look at the box score, which is static, so I had to keep refreshing to see what was happening. I was tremendously annoyed to see the one run go up for the Dodgers, and looking at the pitching, I could see that McClellan gave up a hit and run charged to Miller. My immediate question was, why was Carp pulled? Now that I am home with a little more bandwidth, I have gone to gameday, and see that Freese pinchhit for Carp when there was 1 out, and none on base, and Carp with 97 pitches. OK, the rationale must have been let us try to engineer a run, but the way Carp was pitching, I agree, why not leave him in? Maybe the two singles in the 7th influenced the decision. Tough loss to take though. I hope that we can hit Kershaw tomorrow.

i didn't agree with the move

but i am no longer commenting on pitching moves.

rematch time – waino vs. kershaw. let’s hope for no balls hit to/in left field this time around. hell, last night had the feel of a tense playoff game, which is why it was disappointing to lose it. both squads seemed to be playing for supremacy, we just came up short, even with apu and the heart of the order in the 9th – we had our chance. and of course, without freeze and colby, we’re playing a bit short.

I just hope we don't get swept tomorrow right now

although it would have been nice to take advantage of those reds losses…

great, and we get kershaw tomorrow

still don’t understand carp not pitching last nite for the win, and letting tomorrow be the rubber game.

Exactly what I'm saying about Carpenter.

If he can play, then put him in there. No reason to hold him out of one game. If he’s really the ace, he should pitch as often as possible.

I'm just thinking that they were trying to figure out what to do with hawk and walters

see if they can possibly be a starter. hopefully last night put an end to that nonsense.

they could have done that tonite though

carp was on regular rest last nite, and had a very favorable matchup. we win that game last nite, hand them tonite, and go with waino tomorrow.

yeah but we should have been able to score 2 runs off of kuroda

but we didn’t. that’s the bottom line right there.

still a stupid matchup

he’s a good pitcher. we could have just taken the win last night against their minor league pitcher.

I'm gonna be pissed

if I travel 2300 miles to watch this pathetic offense for a week. It’s Chris F. Carpenter day, and Kuroda pitched well, but we couldn’t scratch out one fucking run? Monday….you got till Monday to figure it out Cards.

from where? You are going to STL to watch Seattle? I leave Kathmandu end of the month to Manila, then Phoenix, and home to BC, Canada. Maybe I will pop over to STL for the series against the Dodgers in July, but it better be different than this one!

listen

everything is available here. I won’t be too graphic here in case kids are lurking, but my case of beer just finished, so I went out to get another case of Tuborg. I had sent the Ms. earlier, but she failed in the mission. Actually, it is a real bottle shop. But, to avoid paying taxes on selling alcohol, they only sell on order, no stock. My bride (actually we have 2 sons in their 20s, so I jest), whom I had sent to get another case, messed up, and I was dry. So here comes the sensitive part of the story, I went to the same store, and they said, OK, coming in 5 mins. But, no beer at home, so I went to hole in the wall 100m away. It is a funny place, meaning a dingy place with several comely maidens lurking. Not a good thing. Anyhow, I had 2 cold ones, picked up my case, and back home to my case. Now, about the yak, anything is possible. My project has promoted yak/cow crosses, and I am even contemplating getting a herd with my brother-in-law and selling yak cheese etc. Want to find a yak girl and herd? Sorry, got carried away, I was trying to say that the ladies are very fine, meaning pretty non-confrontational, affectionate, etc. etc. Sorry to all if this is too sexist.

i guess we had our eyes on ralston cash, the dodgers second pick:

from truebluela:

Funny enough, southern California wasn’t on Cash’s radar either before this past weekend.

“I figured it was going to be Seattle or St. Louis,” said Cash, who had conversations with both the Mariners and Cardinals organizations prior to a surprise phone call from the Dodgers on Saturday.

“I was eating dinner, and they called and asked if I could come out and throw for them,” Cash said. “I figured it would be Monday, but they said they wanted me on a plane at 8 a.m. (Sunday). I was like, ‘whoa, that’s not going to happen.’ But we made it work, and I was out there during the Braves series. I threw in the home bullpen, and they kept me kind of hidden away from the Braves people because they didn’t want them to know they were talking to me.”

(he’s a high schooler from georgia (i believe) and the dodgers drafted his cousin just a couple years ago.)

about the draft

someone wondered if ben gamel, picked 10th round by the yanks and committed to florida state, was mat’s brother – yes he is, from jacksonville, fla.

the astros first-round pick at #19, the pitcher with the funny name – mike foltynewicz – the high-schooler from minooka, illinois, i’ve seen pitch his junior year a couple times. apparently he has made great strides. in this article, which he headlines, if you scroll down to the homewood-flossmoor game, the kid aaron hauge is from the same high school as john ely and better at that same age (and better than the astros first-round pick, in my biased opinion).

being a year younger than his class, hauge is going to heartland juco for a year to “mature” – a 6’0" lefty, his fastball is only at 88-89 – heartland being a rival/better of lewis and clark. if in his year 18 he can hit that magical 90 mark, i think he will get a lot of attention. the kid was invited to try for the area code games as a sophomore (freshman age-wise) and has probably pitched against and beaten all the teams in this article, and often having to throw shutouts to do it, and even then sometimes it wasn’t enough, as last year as a junior he pitched 7 shutout innings (the length of hs games) in the playoffs against the number one team only to have his team lose 1-0 in extras.

couple of interesting tidbits: his official pitching coach for the last three years at H-F high school has been marvin freeman, who had a long mlb career and actually garnered a cy vote or two one year. and, another lefty, very talented, hauge supplanted as the ace at H-F when aaron was a soph and stanten jones was a junior is down here pitching at southern university in louisiana, where ricky weeks and several other pros have attended, and which has a pipeline to the chicago area. also, since stanford is on some peoples minds, hauge dominated a kid last year as a junior, and this kid was a big-time hitter and a senior committed to stanford – it was state playoffs again, and hauge won 1-0 without ever walking the dude.

another way to put it is

i do not get this pick at all by the astros. yes, he was a highly-regarded kid in the area, but to me this was either a reach, or blatantly frugal. i’m leaning on the latter, and with that in mind expect oswalt and berkman both to be dealt, with the astros eating no salary, thus getting little in way of return except money off the books, and then being sold. unless some scout with serious pull had a big hard-on for this kid’s potential (and i’m not saying this couldn’t end up being the greatest pick of the draft…just saying), then this pick smells fishy at 19 of the first round.

according to roto

carp has gone 6 straight starts without fanning more than 5 – that’s amazing, since early in the year he seemed to want to strike everyone out but at the same time give up mucho dingers. his era is dropping as he continues to k fewer batters.
