(2010 Draft Open Thread): choosing up sides 2010

howdy folks. on draft day last year i wrote a post about luhnow's first four years of draft dividends, compared to the harvests from the three previous four-year periods. the quick n dirty of that post (the whole thing is here, if'n you want to read ev'y word) was that luhnow would probably end up with three to five everyday players out of his 2005-2008 drafts, plus a gaggle of part-time players --- a good but not great rate of return, compared to the recent past.

with another year's worth of development time, we can now see how things are shaping up with greater clarity:

 2005-082001-041997-001993-96
STARS ???? dan haren albert pujols
jd drew
matt morris
REGULARS colby rasmus
jaime garcia
chris perez
skip schumaker
brendan ryan
daric barton
adam kennedy
yadi molina
jack wilson
chris duncan
coco crisp
rick ankiel
placido polanco
alan benes
braden looper
PART-TIMERS luke gregerson
mitchell boggs
kyle mclellan
joe mather
brad thompson
anthony reyes
jason motte
bud smith
mike crudale
pablo ozuna
eli marrero
jay witasick
cliff polite
britt reames
chris richard
kerry robinson
brent butler

since i wrote that post last year, rasmus established himself as an everyday player, and garcia and chris perez have all but done the same. (to refresh your memory, a pitcher is considered "everyday" if he holds a regular rotation slot or is a regular closer.) meanwhile a couple of relief pitchers drafted by luhnow (gregerson and boggs) have become pretty well established as big-league middle relievers, which puts them in the "part-time" category. we may debate whether nick stavinoha merits the "part-time" designation or whether he is still just replacement-level filler (i would argue the latter), but no matter --- we'll probably know which box to put him into by this time next year. for that matter, we'll be better able to gauge 2005-08 draftees such as brett wallace, adam ottavino, jon jay, allen craig, etc etc. we may also know whether rasmus is bound for "star" billing on this table.

those paying attention will note that the 2001-04 ranks have been beefed up by the maturation of daric barton and brendan ryan into everyday big-leaguers. at this time last year neither one merited the title; i feel confident in bestowing it on ryan despite his early-season slump, and barton is finally delivering on his high-OBP promise (his .397 figure for 2010 ranks 6th in the AL as of this morning). at this time last year the cards' 2001-04 drafts had only produced two big-league regulars (haren and schumaker); as of today, those drafts look a lot more presentable.

check back a year from now . . . . .

Hey lboros...

I would say Rasmus is a star right now, and Barton is soon to not be a regular. Yes the OBP is fine but you can’t have a first baseman with below average defense and a sub-400 slugging. They’ll need to upgrade that.

Also, it’s worth pointing out Luhnow never had picks as high as those that netted Drew and Morris. Considering the return/performance of Wallace and others lurking in the minors, I’d say Luhnow is looking quite good.

Tis better to lose bunting than win with dingers alone...

by guayzimi on Jun 7, 2010 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

As awesome as he's been, it seems premature to give him the star label after only two months.

Now Brad Thompson, on the other hand…. My wife would also be upset that Yadi isn’t listed as a star, but I think she has somewhat different criteria than lboros.
I think Chris Perez is now being used as Wood’s set-up man in Cleveland, not as their closer, so he maybe belongs in the “part-timers” category. But that’s a very minor quibble, especially since he’ll probably be back to closing when Wood’s arm falls off again next month.

barton has been worth 1.4-1.8 WAR (fangraphs/b-r) so far

with defense that’s -0.5 to 3 between UZR and RZR. His OPS is 129. That’s not a problem at first.

by DanUpBaby on Jun 7, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I wonder about that UZR...

he just looks so bad in the field…

by guayzimi on Jun 7, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah i think rasmus has hit the "star" level

he’s going to top 4 WAR this year and you’d expect that to be the sort of production he’ll make going forward.

dunno about those

But Molina is not in the same company as adam kennedy and chris duncan, whether he would quality as a ‘star’ or not.

But the fact that he’d be an improvement on basically any team he went to besides minnesota puts him pretty easily in the ‘star’ category, or at least requires some kind of explanation.

Is Anthoney Reyes still pitching in the Majors?

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

Molina is working himself into the star catagory.

Many consider him the best defensive catcher in the league and all know his golden arm, he’s got a few GG now, and he’s about to make his 2nd straight AS appearance (fingers crossed). I think there is a case for Yadi being a star catcher right now.

by stxcardsfan on Jun 7, 2010 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

I'd say he's a star

he’s starting to be thought of as the go-to all star catcher in the NL

I'll leave this to Lao Tzu

by Cards Fan in Chitown on Jun 7, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah I think so

if Franklin Gutierrez can be a top player by being a good defensive CFer and an average hitter, than Yadi can definitely be a star as an average hitter and good defensive catcher. He was worth an average of about 3.5 WAR over the last two seasons, which doesn’t take into account the fact that most catcher/framing metrics also have him above average.

That said, the Nats will be good by the time he’s up. I’m guessing they have him in the minors all of next year and he might be up in 2012. They’ll have a middle of the order with him and Zimmermann, a rotation with Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann and Storen cleaning up, and quite a lot of money to add free agents. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

Of the triangular trade routes from junior high means we have to send some rum to western europe before we get the infielders.

"We were men - flesh and blood - and we played baseball in the sunshine. We hit doubles off the wall, slid hard into second base. We had fights, and we made love. We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives." Reds take Grandal.

Just in case anyone was feeling a little sad today

Draft getting you down? Cardinal pick taking too long? Then this bit from Joe Posnanski should cheer you up:

“The Chicago Cubs — apparently unbothered by an outfielder turning 31 years old — gave Alfonso Soriano an eight year, $136 million contract. Soriano periodically has been a good player (and periodically horrific); he’s actually hitting the ball quite well right now. But before next season even begins he will turn 35 and he will still have FOUR YEARS and $72 MILLION left on his deal. That isn’t a contract, that’s a plea bargain.”

Jumping in late here, but...

a few comments about Hayden Simpson:
   1. while reading through the early posts, someone said it’d be funny if someone picked a player nobody knew anything about, awkward silence, etc. Well, here he is!
   2. I also heard them say he was “short” but listed his height as 6’1" (if I heard correctly) Sheesh! since when am I short?
   3. Simpson pitched for Southern Arkansas University a small D-II school in the southern (naturally) part of the state. He was, apparently, pretty good as he was the runner-up D-II player of the year in one publications list. SAU had a good team, won their half of the conference and made it to the D-II final 8 or 16 (iirc).

Random thought

On these compensation picks and they pretty much have to draft a “signability” guy or they lose the pick, why wouldn’t the supposed “signability” guy just change his mind after he got picked and demand more? Teams lie to players all the time, players lie to teams all the time—-it’s a businesss. Why would this be different?

Picks from Derosa and Pineiro I believe.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

by purple_haze on Jun 7, 2010 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

That depends on what you think about position

I’d say he’s a higher ceiling than Wallace because he could conceivably have a similar power profile (line drive gap power with 15-20 homer upside) AND legitimately play 3B or 2B. Wallace was a good bet to get stuck at 1B when he was drafted.

Hmmm...
The next pic is Cardinals 1st round draft pick Brett Wallace who is supposed to have great hitting power. Seeing the bat bend from the sheer torque of his swing is amazing, just try to bend a wooden bat by standing on it, it won’t happen. Over the years I have only captured two other Big Leaguers that you can see the bat bend during their swing, Scott Rolen & Albert Pujols.

for 17 mil less i’d give him some leeway out there so we could use that money elsewhere. offensively we wouldn’t take a big hit, and he’ll get better too. he and holliday are both doubles hitters with 20+ hr pop.

Anyone have any possibly salary figure for Cox

Can’t seem to find anything.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

dodgers are throwing their worst "fill-in" starter

so this should be a free-for-all tonite. although monasterios might be needed down the line for them, as i hear that their opening day starter got into a little trouble at the ritz-carlton. no details, but there was a complaint lodged against him, presumably by a young lady.

by cardball on Jun 7, 2010 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

a guy drafted out of high school has leverage

because he most likely has a college scholarship, so you have to pay him more if you want him to forgo that. once he enters a 4-yr university (as opposed to juco, like harper), he has to stay a certain period before he can be eligible for the draft again. this is generally after his junior year, but there are some draft-eligible sophs. so most of these guys sign then, when they have at least a little leverage (they can return to school for senior year and then reenter draft, at which time, though, they have no leverage)

Zack Cox's Swing

Just happened to have this in my library.

This is quite a nice swing.

My question is his eye and his ability to consistently put this swing on a major league caliber pitch.

I don't like his load

Too much sway (ala Ludwick).

However, his position at the Point Of Contact, in this swing at least, is good.

by thepainguy on Jun 7, 2010 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he's toned down some of the sway

Looking at the footage on some of the other scouting sites. Your footage is from 3 years ago — I would guess that he’s made a few adjustments since then just to hit college pitching.

The draft preview on the D-backs SBN site

Decent view of an oppo double. And Side view of a few swings and a bomb. I don’t really see length being too much of a problem there, he’s bat isn’t any more “wrapped” than Manny. He’s not gonna be Pujols short, but I mean the 80 power plays…

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Jun 7, 2010 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you

I think his problem is going to be swing path and not length.

His arms seem to get extended quickly on the path down to the ball, meaning he’s not going to be able to check his swing consistently against good breaking stuff. And he swings so damn hard that if he’s out in front he’s not going to be able to adjust much.

Thing is — he’s 17 fucking years old. If he’s able to make a couple minor adjustments (such as a better timing mechanism) he’s going to be a monster power hitter even with his 120+ K’s per year.

Can Colby round out our new MV3?

If we get Castellanos, Allie, or Cole, I’ll be stoked.

I want Bryan Harper in the second

I may be misspelling his first name though clol

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

Houston has a poor everything really.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

All indications are that the Cards are a good org to play for, if you can make it to the show, you’ve almost always got a shot at post-season, etc. I think most any kid would be pleased to be drafted by the Cards. However, Cox, unlike many from Arkansas, may not be a life-long Cards fan and may not, or may, be prone to taking a bit less to sign with them.

by cardball on Jun 7, 2010 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

This is what happens....

…when you get wrapped up in pre-draft mocks and scouting reports. You get wrapped up in specific potential prospects, and you really don’t realize how good this draft is. The Cardinals got a top 10 talent with their first pick, and picked a solid prospect and a high risk/high reward pitcher with their supplementals.

Although they’re both raw, have good mechanics, and are about the same age, Jenkins has a higher ceiling than Allie. Allie’s issue is that most scouts believe he won’t be a starter in the majors—he just can’t maintain his stuff through several innings and he also has very erratic control on all of his pitches. Jenkins has a bit lower velocity on his fastball (he has thrown in the mid-90s), but he has more movement and command. He’s also a three-sport athlete and scouts believe that if he concentrates on baseball and developing his three pitches, he’s a definate starter.

And to be honest, there’s a good chance Wilson won’t be picked this year. Before the draft, there was a ton of talk that Wilson wouldn’t sign with any team no matter the money because his parents wanted him to go to college. Teams stayed away for 50 picks, and that speaks volumes.

by Forsch31 on Jun 8, 2010 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

the parents may have over-negotiated with the stanford talk

and he also might not be seen as such a can’t-miss to be worth the money. tbh, he wasn’t my first choice with where we were picking – vettleson was, and then allie with our first supp. i think you pick talent, which is slightly different than best player available – like the rays do, who took vettleson a few picks before our first supp. i suppose we were possibly going to take him there, and just got beat to the punch, which there’s nothing you can do about except be disappointed.

i really don’t see cox as a top ten talent, even in this draft. a lot of teams picking in front of us apparently didn’t either. of course teams have different needs, and not every player suits them, but one can’t rationalize that he fell for signability issues when there is only indication that the opposite is true. cox may have been one of the top 10 players in the draft as far as being “major-league ready” but i don’t see him anywhere near a top-10 talent. i have no problem with us going for the best player available in that slot, but sometimes i’d just like us to go for talent, as we did with shelby miller, and as we did with jenkins – i liked that pick, but i thought the arizona state pitcher was pretty conservative and uninspiring, especially after we went “safe” on our first pick..

looks like wilson isn't going to sign

given we got him with the 390th-odd pick. Decent insurance policy if Cox wants megabucks, i suppose.

by Felonius_Monk on Jun 8, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

and re: Cox

I heard from several sources he was looking for “Alvarez money”, i.e. top 5 sorta slot. In which case it’s highly probable he DID fall for signability issues.

There’s also a big argument that we needed a guy who’s likely to be a major league starting position player, and who has a possible impact bat, in our system. We literally have none of those. I could see the argument for a real sky-high hitting potential guy like Brentz, or a guy with more projection and a lot of talent like Castellanos, but I really think Cox is a good selection because we simply NEED to produce average to above-average major league players every year to be able to afford the Holliday/Pujols contracts. From what I’ve heard, Cox is the closest in this draft as a lock to do that job and he’s got decent upside as well (unlike, say, Colon, who only grades out as average).

Still bitching to contact.

by Felonius_Monk on Jun 8, 2010 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

well, had we picked colon i'd be pissed

even in the supp (can’t believe he went that high, tbh). i didn’t see a lot of him, but checked in now and then on a game online and i thought kozma, had he gone to college, would have basically been colon. just my opinion, and the royals seem to disagree.

cox may be putting out there that he wants alvarez money, and why not, but alvarez was much more highly regarded, iirc. anyway, everyone seems to like the pick, although i’m unsure if it’s because they think we got a steal based on mock drafts or because they actually like his game, but i’m swayed a little by the consensus. i’m a little worried about his position, as some believe he will be a left-fielder, but even then he would have trade value – if it wasn’t a prospect swap, though, we’d still have to pay whoever we got for him. i don’t think he’ll be a problem to sign, even if they draw out negotiations as usual. if he can play second base, i could really like him.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on Jun 8, 2010 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

FWIW

I think Colon was regarded better than Kozma ever was (not that I saw any of either actually playing!) but the knock on him seemed to be that he was merely average in most respects. IIRC a lot of folks thought Kozma was a bit handsy and would struggle to hit with wooden bats, which seems somewhat prescient. That said, yeah, I’d have been distinctly underwhelmed by Colon. I think he’s got a fair chance of being an average major league 2B like, say, Orlando Hudson, who keeps signing for about $5m each season. Not exactly what you’d call impact talent.

I think I like Cox based on the fact he’s got a bat. Toolsy guys are well and good but it sounds like Cox is going to hit for sure at major league level and has already done it against similar competition with wood bats in Cape Cod. His numbers in Cape Cod were really eye-opening (I think it was > .900 OPS), when you consider it’s probably equivalent to Quad Cities or even Palm Beach and he’s still, what, 20? He sounds like he’ll move quickly, and combines a pretty high floor (he’ll hit for sure, and presumably will stick at either 2B, 3B or RF so he’s not got the Wallace fielding stink to the same extent) with a decent ceiling.

I think if we wanted to shoot for the moon it seems like guys like Austin Wilson or Castellanos (or even Brentz, though I know a few were pretty down on his swing) have probably got more ceiling, but Cox seems like he’ll move faster than any of them (a good thing, as we need to save money in the majors SOON and we literally have NO position players coming through in the next two years who might be regulars, with the possible exception of Descalso) and has a decent chance of being an impact guy.

I am a little concerned that (for a top-10 guy in most mocks) there are some dissenting voices, but a lot of that seems to be based on the suggestion he has a handsy swing and may not pack on much power – I think his Cape Cod performance particularly dispells that rumour, and there’s also suggestions he intentionally hit for average and contact in his last college year, as there were knocks on his K-rate. The fact that the guy is so comfortable hitting at that level that he can immediately change his hitting approach and have instant success is very encouraging IMO.

i’m a little worried about his position, as some believe he will be a left-fielder, but even then he would have trade value

Yeah, that sounds like another knock on him, and tbh I too am a little concerned that a guy who was considered a mediocre 3B can move to 2B and suddenly become better. I guess a lot depends on his work ethic as a pro (I hear good things about his makeup, so that’s a plus, I guess), as he looks like he has the body type to do the job, at least for a few years, like, say, Dan Uggla. However, I still wouldn’t be TOO concerned if he hits and has to move to the OF – we don’t likely have an obvious RF in the system and apparently Cox has a great arm. If he moves to a corner I bet they’ll do an Aaron Luna with him and swap him into RF at AA. But obviously, yeah, he’s probably only going to be a star if he can stick at 2B or 3B.

Still bitching to contact.

Wrong Austin.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

yeah, I'm not exactly happy with the last two picks there.

Blair appears to have some stuff but has control issues. I never like hearing when scouts project a guy to the pen so early. I want a high upside STARTER this early in the draft. I doubt we’ll be able to sign Jenkins, so I dislike this selection. He’s projectable, but I have a feeling his chance to play football for Baylor will make him too expensive and we’ll lose him.

I never put too much stock into being projected into relief if they've had success as a starter

These guys have 3 years to figure out a 3rd/4th pitch and you have next to no idea if they are going to do it. I know it’s the anomaly and that singularly doesn’t make scouts stupid, but Lincecum was thought by many scouts to be a reliever because he didn’t have a reliable 3rd pitch at all nor command of his curve.

John Sickels of Minorleagueball has Jenkins

Underrated 2010 Draft Prospects

Nice tidbit about Blair in the comments of

Draft Question: Late First Round Pitchers

I have seen him pitch at least 20 times in person over the past 3 years (season ticket holder for ASU) and I can certainly chip in on him:

From a "stuff" standpoint he’s better than Mike Leake. Now before you all jump on me, I’m saying simply by what he puts on the ball. He is obviously no where near as polished, have the intangibles, or is not near the pitcher Leake was for us. That said, Blair has a better fastball with more movement (leake sits at 88-89 while Blair 92-93) and Blair’s slider is more an out pitch than anything Leake throws. Leake’s strength was being a master at his craft, adding and subtracting from his pitches, and throwing 4 pitches for strikes. Blair comes with a nasty boring fastball will break some bats at the next level, a power slider, and a change that shows some promise but isn’t used that often. Blair’s control can be erratic, he’s helped out a lot by kids with limited plate discipline. When Blair gets in trouble he just rears back and unleashes a 97mph fastball and college kids for the most part chase it no just because of the sheer velocity and movement, no matter where it is (or isn’t) in the zone. Big league hitters will wait Blair out and feast on his mistakes.

IMO, Blair could excell as a closer. His fastball would bump a few notches and he could scrap his change and just worry about mastering the slider. I could see him a closer with a 97mph 2 seemer and a mid-high 80s slider

gotta say

after reading this, it looks like the astros won’t be competing any time soon. they did a terrible job by drafting deshields and foltynewicz so early

Or they did a brilliant job

Its just to early to tell.

If DeShields would have been there in the second round

Then they did a poor job by drafting him there, whether he pans out or not.

Would he have been though?

Since I haven’t seen any teams draft board I have no idea? And I’m not trying to be difficult, I’m just saying that it’s really honestly to soon to tell how any team did. But it’s a lot of fun to try.

like the cub pick

it sounds like a big reach, but if they wanted him above anyone else and it was going to be their only chance to pick him, then they had to pull the trigger.

roto says cox is rough at third, could be moved to outfield

on a cheerier note, this from truebluela:

or second base

wow, he really is the mang. or maybe no nickname can really describe him

we can think second base

i’m hopeful too, but i can’t see how if he doesn’t have the athleticism and quickness to play third how he could possibly be suitable at a tougher defensive position.

a lot of stuff i've seen suggests 2b and 3b are basically interchangeable in terms of difficulty

although also from what I’ve heard, he doesn’t have a lot of footspeed. I’d have said 3b is more reactions and agility, 2b is more footspeed and first step, so his skillset seems more suited to 3rd (especially as he has a strong arm). That said, scouting reports liked him more at 2nd. We’ll see how it shakes down in the wash.

personally I'd rather play 2nd than 3rd

I’ve always thought that third is harder

better athleticism is required at second

better reflexes and arm are required at third. cox is said to not have athleticism or range for third, which would mean no way he can play second. now maybe he’s just terribly out of shape or something and they can fix that, but otherwise i cannot envision him transitioning to second, which would probably leave left field as the only viable option.

why not right?

he apparently has a great arm and could hit 90mph on the mound.

true

i just regard right field as more than just an arm. there’s no keeping a guy going first to third if you can’t get to the ball in a manner that would dissuade him, or get him out, and i don’t know about cox either way. i just know that if given luddy’s arm, or even ank’s, holliday would not be a right fielder. i just think, taking arm out of it, left field is an easier position to play, perhaps due to configuration of parks, idk, but to me it right requires not only a better arm, but better outfield acumen and athleticism.

I think Holliday tracks and catches flyballs about as well as Ludwick or Ankiel to be honest

they might both shade him on athleticism (Ank by a long way) but Holliday is actually faster across the ground IMO, and reads the ball pretty well (something Ank was very poor at).

Overall I think Ludwick is the best RF of the three as he combines solid athleticism with good instincts and a good arm, but I don’t see Holliday being much worse and he might actually get to the ball better. I think he’d be fine in RF with Ludwick’s arm. Please note this is all just my opinion.

FWIW the advanced fielding stats conflate LF and RF as equally valuable and therefore difficult to play. Maybe this is because LF sees slightly more balls hit in that area, I don’t know.

So

I just got back from the piss pounding in the city of angels and wanted to make some sort of who loves cox joke, but it seems that it has already been covered. :(

Hi folks

just dropping in to say that I’m really pretty happy with this draft. Yet again we seem to have got a talent who should’ve gone 10 spots or so ahead of us in the 1st round and taken the best player left on the board.

That said, the three guys I wanted (Brentz, Cole and Wilson) all seemed to be on the board when we picked, and Cole and Wilson were both on the board (seemingly) when the supplementals went down. What’s with that? Signability issues?

FWIW I think the RedSox cleared up too – Vitek in the first, Brentz and Ranaudo with supplementals. All three of those guys could’ve been top 15-20 picks and they got them with picks 20, 36 and 39.

Also – whither left-handed pitching? Jesse Biddle (who I think would’ve been a great pick too) was available when we made out first round pick. I guess Luhnow just couldn’t NOT pick Cox at that point. A lot of the mocks I saw had him going in the 10th pick or so.

Gausman and Cole, two pitchers I really like, are still there and hopefully we can get one of them in the 2nd round. I’m actually surprised both are still on the board after 50 picks, Cole especially. I guess we’d have to pay way over slot to get him now, unless there’s some injury I’m not aware of.

Also

no Stetson Allie. So, ummmm, why are a bunch of pretty clear first round guys still on the board after 50 picks?

And if we can get Cole, Allie, or Gausman in the 2nd and have to pay 1st round money, do we do that? I’m guessing, hopefully, YES.

i read a couple places that allie was just way too expensive

i like the rays draft. they took vettleson, who i was hoping for, a couple picks before our first supp.

Yeah from what I hear

Allie will be top 10 next year. I guess no-one takes him in the 2nd round because they’ll have to pay WAY over slot, probably top-10 money. I’d still like to do that, but realistically the budget probably doesn’t stretch with Cox and possibly Tyrell Jenkins being slight over-slot signs.

I’m also guessing Wilson is not getting drafted this year, for signability reasons. I’d have really loved to have made a reach for Wilson or Cole in the supplementals.

Of the guys left, if we’re looking at lefty pitching still (unless that was just BS), I like Solis. I think he’s a good choice in the 2nd round and I bet he won’t cost much if anything over slot. If we’re prepared to take a signability risk and Cole’s still, on the board, I really, really love him as a 2nd round pick. Eibner’s probably another slight signability risk that would make a good high-upside shot.

Any idea what pick we have in round 2?

I’m thinking if we go signable and lower-upside polished player, Sammy Solis (college LHP) or maybe Jedd Gyorko (college 2B/SS who I thought might go to us in the supplementals) would be good if they’re still on the board.

Higher upside/signability risk, I’d love to get AJ Cole (HS RHP) or Kevin Gaumsan (HS RHP), of which Cole will be the harder sign, or perhaps Brett Eibner (college OF/RHP), who’ll be a tricky sign and who has issues with his two-way projection (wants to hit and many think he’s better pitching), or Jesse Hahn (college RHP), who got injured but was projected as a top 10-20 guy and may now need TJ surgery.

I’m hoping for Cole, but realistically he probably wants too much money, so any of these guys would be good. Gausman is exciting, and Gyorko seems to fit our needs pretty well. Hopefully at least one of these guys is on the board when we pick.

Still bitching to contact.
