The Draft Preview Roundup Thread

As you probably know, over the past several months I've done a series of draft preview posts, attempting to present scouting reports of at least a fair percentage of players the Cardinals will likely be considering when they go on the draft clock. Well, draft day is here at last, and as per reader request I wanted to collect links to all the entries so you can easily access any scouting report you might need.

Part one - Anthony Ranaudo, Deck McGuire, Alex Wimmers

Two - Drew Pomeranz, James Paxton

Three - Christian Colon, Bryce Brentz, Zach Cox

Four - Austin Wilson, Manny Machado, Griffin Murphy

Five - Matt Harvey, Chance Ruffin, Chad Lewis, Marcus Littlewood, Addison Reed, Cameron Rupp, Nick Tepesch

Six - Jedd Gyorko, Gary Brown, Zach Alvord

Seven - Kevin Gausman, Stetson Allie, Dylan Covey

Eight - Christian Yelich, Dominic Ficociello, Asher Wojciechowski, Drew Cisco, Seth Blair

Nine - Strategy

Ten - Kolbrin Vitek, Brett Eibner, Kellin Deglan

Eleven - Ross Wilson, Josh Spence, Mark Canha, Mitchell Shifflett

I hope these are helpful as we go through draft day. I'll have a couple draft posts up over at the RFT; I'm going to have a mock draft of the first round and a Cardinal-specific preview post today.

(Please forgive the first letters of a couple of those not being linked, and some being italicized and others not. The story editor is doing something really bizarre this morning when I try to link, and I'm tired of fighting the fucking thing.)

Happy Draft Day, everybody!

Something I forgot to ask a while back

what about Cole? He never made any of your previews (which I still really love btw).

Still bitching to contact.

by Felonius_Monk on Jun 7, 2010 10:25 AM EDT reply actions

Actually, Cole is one guy

I skipped purposely, thinking there was absolutely no chance he would still be there. (In much the same way I skipped Shelby Miller last year, in fact.) Now it looks like there’s at least a decent chance he WILL be there, and if so he would make an outstanding pick. Kid has tremendous upside, and I would be thrilled to have missed again.

Yep, I'd love Cole

weird how things work out, though – Machado, one guy you DID profile, is going top 5 on a few mocks i’ve seen lately (as high as #3 on one, I think).

My cousin...

who’s an intern with the Cardinals was taking a crap when Luhnow and a couple other guys came in to the loo… It looks like they’re going to go with Addison Reed – signability, polish, very safe…

Tis better to lose bunting than win with dingers alone...

pinch of salt and all that

could declaring this on a (very) public forum, which I know there’s evidence some of the FO guys have read in the past, not lead to your cousin getting fired?

Think there's any chance guayzimi is making this up?

Yes. I think there is a chance.

But I think you gotta give people the benefit of the doubt :-).

Blech.

If that’s true, I’m disappointed. I’m not a fan of Reed at all. Maybe in the supplemental, but not as your first-rounder.

Death needs time for what it kills to grow in.

by the red baron on Jun 7, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

The other name I've heard once or twice lately is Solis

who seems to be another kinda 2nd/supplemental round type safe, low-upside pick. I know nothing about him but I believe he’s a college lefty with middling stuff.

Still bitching to contact.

by Felonius_Monk on Jun 7, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Solis I would really like in the supplemental,

and given the org’s stated preference to try and get some sinister pitching this year, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them pick him up if he’s there.

Death needs time for what it kills to grow in.

by the red baron on Jun 7, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

i’ve heard his name from at least two sources now. It might just be people putting 2 and 2 together (Luhnow suggesting lefty pitching was a priority, and the only true first-round talent lefties are likely to go well before pick 25) and then some chinese whispers, but it certainly seems like a reasonable chance there’s something in it.

I think I agree – a safe-ish projectable lefty in the supplementals would be fine. I just hope we either go for a high upside guy at 25. If any of Cole, Brentz or Wilson is available I’d definitely pop for them and pay whatever they want within reason, though I suspect all those names might be off the board. I could live with someone like Eibner I suppose.

What’s your take on Gausman? Has his stock fell? I don’t think I’ve seen his name in any mock first rounds that I can recall (may be mistaken) – I really liked the sound of him based solely on your scouting report and the video on there, but it’s gone kinda quiet on his front since then. Is he still considered a first round talent or has something pushed him down somewhat?

Still bitching to contact.

by Felonius_Monk on Jun 7, 2010 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

He has definitely fallen.

There’s at least a fair chance he could still be on the board at 46. If so, I’ll be doing a jig in my living room.

Thanks for this, RB

Please link to your RFT posts when they’re done!

Also, I was watching the CS Fullerton game last night to catch Christian Colon, and I came away less than impressed. I just re-read your take on him, and I felt the same way. Not much upside to picking him, especially in the first round.

by bmorgan on Jun 7, 2010 11:45 AM EDT reply actions

A lot of mock drafts have him touching the top 15 anyhow

so he’s one there’s probably limited chance of falling to us. I tend to agree, though, he seems a very meh sort of selection. Wilson and Brentz are my favourite position players (prob both gone when we pick), but if we went the MIF route I would probably prefer Gyorko even to Colon.

Any chance Gamble is still on the board

When we pick at 25?

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

Personally I think that people are conflating the speed and LH comments

which they’ll pursue at some point with who they’ll pick first overall. I don’t think they have any criteria besides top of their draft board and signable for the 25th overall pick.

Think; It's not illegal yet.

levon washington, who didn't sign with the rays last year (boras client)

anyone heard anything about him? i think he went to a juco and would be eligible again for this draft.

The question with Washington is

Where does he play defensively? And is he motivated?

yeah, i don't know much about him

remember video of him last year, and that he had a godawful arm, but was fast and had a good stick – i was wondering if maybe he tried second base in juco, or if that was at all a possibility.

From what I can tell he played CF in Juco

But still projects as a 2B in the pros.

we tried to sign wagner mateo,

many here like austin wilson (a lot), but as for outfielders, what about this drew vettleson kid? i haven’t heard much talk about him.

Vettleson

has an outstanding swing, and solid physical tools, but the reports on his glove aren’t very good. Not sure why, either, as his speed is plenty good enough to play the field, and his arm is a plus. I think he’d make an excellent right fielder, and is definitely a guy to watch somewhere between the late first and mid second round.
