I saw a lot of similar looks in the softball world series the other day
not sure how I ended up watching the softball world series, but it’s been a slow weekend.
seems it started in the little league world series
when harper was around that age, so that could have something to do with it. wasn’t it a tony the tiger stripes thing, sponsored by kellogg’s?

García on interview for ESPN Deportes
saying that the key to his success is being around “two of the best pitchers in the Big Leagues like Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter”. As well as having, “the best catcher behind the plate, like Yadier Molina”
Jaime Garcia’s message is translated by Paulspike in his basement. Any use of his material must be authorized by the Association of Basement Bloggers.

that dp may have changed things
if lopex fields it and gets an out at third or home, only one scores. but the other could have been earned if 2 outs hadn’t been recorded on one play. they may as well not even post it till the inning is over.

I don't really understand either,
but I’ve always had the vague impression that the scorer is supposed to assume the most probable out (but not a double play) and then see how many runs would have scored if all subsequent batters do what they did in real life. By that logic in this case both would be earned if the scorer assumes a run scores on that out, they don’t get the double play, and then the sac is still good. But there’s so many different things that could have happened (Floppy could have gone home with it, he could have got the force at third so the sac fly isn’t in effect, etc.) that I don’t know how he/she would decide there.
I should point out in case it isn’t already clear that I’m probably full of shit here.
by BTown Birds fan on Jun 6, 2010 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions
i think its reasonable to assume
lopez wouldve gone home and gotten the lead runner, thus i can see unearned run
I think the assumption is that no run scores on the error play if it were an out
Then the sac is still an earned run, but the other run isn’t.

Aaron Miles, Tony? Really?
because Rasmus simply doesn't work there at all...
Tis better to lose bunting than win with dingers alone...
because Freese is hurt
so we have to move Luddy to 5 so that matt has some semblance of protection, so we don’t have a 2 hitter anymore. because skip’s not in the lineup, Flopex hits 1st, removing another possible second hitter, and Tony doesn’t trust Colby against lefties, so he’s out of the picture. Yadi’s too slow, and Miles just sucks.

has now used the term “spiral out of control” twice.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down and that foot is me
Parra on pace for 15 strikeouts.
"A good catcher is the quarterback, the carburetor, the lead dog, the pulse taker, the traffic cop and sometimes a lot of unprintable things, but no team gets very far without one." – Miller Huggins
Rasmus on pace for 3 home runs

This is the more likely scenario.

breaking pitches from lefties will break in toward righties, unless it's a screwball. fastballs, unless it's a cutter, will go the other way.

well no
but it may have been one of the best pitches ever
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Definitely one of the best ever...
if not the best. Mariano’s cutter has to be up there… Haren’s split finger… Pedro’s “whatever that was” special.

I think it's a little early to put Haren's pitch there
if you’re gonna base on that small a sample size, Gagne’s change has got to be the best pitch ever

-Mike Shannon
the cutter is a newer addition to his repertoire
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
But it is in fact his current out pitch
And I doubt a guy with two of the best pitches in recent baseball history would have an ERA over 2…
Not afraid to nitpick
dingers
he’s given up like 18, and he pitches in zona
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
?
The point I’m making is that if his splitter was one of the best pitches in recent memory and his cutter is even better than that, he would never, ever get lit up.
Not afraid to nitpick
i disagree that his splitter was one of the best
or that his cutter is now, but even if they were, he’s still going to throw a high percentage of fastballs, and he could get lit up on those.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

Once again
Parra looks great against us. It’s partly our faults but he looks really good too. Of course.
My wife and I were at a game a couple weeks ago where a pitcher struck out bunting foul,
and she didn’t understand what happened so I went through all the complicated rules about what does and doesn’t count as a strike on bunts, foul tips, dropped third strikes, etc. And she had essentially the same question: why all those weird rules?

He’s at a 1.32 ERA 1/3rd of the way through the season, that means he would have to have an ERA of 5.5 the rest of the way to make that happen.
Insane. You don’t just put up a 1.32 ERA due to luck. Jaime is clearly an above average pitcher. I predict a 3.75 ERA going forward.

he had a quick hook yesterday
after watching the game i could elaborate why – mainly that otto was pitching very well – but if he pulled garcia here i would say the same thing, too quick of a hook, though for different reasons (otto was outpitching jaime)
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Whoever said that is kind of rediculous...
yeah Ottavino only threw 75 pitches but with Fielder and Edmonds coming up… that’s the right move.
Tis better to lose bunting than win with dingers alone...
disagree
otto was throwing very very well, and if the plan all along was to pull him after braun, then just start the inning with diner – he always pitches to righties anyway.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Not sure that's a good idea...
Ottavino would’ve got a shot against Fielder if Braun had been retired… I dunno… maybe it’s not cut and dried.
Tis better to lose bunting than win with dingers alone...
hey, let's win this game today
