I mean, I'm used to Franklin being ridiculously lucky
But his stuff is legitimately good here.

I dunno about ridiculously lucky
He throws 70% strikes and walks nobody and gets groundballs.
Not afraid to nitpick
I mean last year he was ridiculously lucky
this year he’s just good.
babip giveth... and babip taketh away
To a degree
Even still, the guy is in the process of beating his xFIP by >1 run in the 4th straight year. At some point that becomes a skill.
Not afraid to nitpick
the walks are the key
if he keeps them that low, he’ll be legit. I don’t know if I believe the improvement in stuff, even after that inning!

we could’ve signed him, but the brewers could offer more playing time, and i think jimmy is chasing some numbers
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
because of lopex?
schu and freeze should have felt it maybe, but not boog. he just started so bad there wasn’t a lot of choice, whereas freeze didn’t. and schu is always gonna get his time.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

batman didn’t feel anything, he started all games but one, schu maybe a little
but it just feels like boog has someone out for his job at all times
lopex was here though
i believe, to platoon with skip and as insurance for a freeze meltdown. i don’t believe it had much bearing on boog, but then he sucked. greene tea wasn’t even on the opening day roster.

That’s the deal McCutch is a better, more consistent hitter, but Colby seems better in the field. I haven’t seen a lot of McCutch, but it seems he’s not an elite defender.

well ideally
cutch turns into carl crawford, and colby turns into grady sizemore pre-knee or jim edmonds. both are very good young CFs. for me, I like colby because of his good plate discipline, 25+ hr power potential, and plus range. it is close, though

Award Time!!!
This will be a limited awards ceremony since I was in and out of the game today…
First off The Ralph Wiggum Memorial Trophy for Butchering of the English Language goes to whoever sung Empire State of Mind at the Belmont… sweet jevus that was awful. Coming in second was Colby for the post game interview.

The Old Yeller Award for an Old Timer Who’s Past His Prime goes to Jim Edmonds for not fielding the ball on the Colby game winner.

The Thursty Award for Baserunning Fail goes to Skippy for sliding into first… knock that shit off or you’ll have a room full of these bad boys.

The Freeze-Pop Award for Most Outstanding Play by a Young Player goes to Ottavino for a good start.

Congrats to all the winners.

It seemed like nothing.
SCENE:
Freese tweaks ankle stepping on third base, this teammate grounds out and he returns to the dugout as the inning ends. Tony meets him at the stairs.
TONY: Let’s get you to the training room. That was a rough play, but I’m sure you’ll only be out for a few weeks.
FREESE: It was just a tweak. It was nothing. He takes the first step into the dugout.
TONY: Whoa! Look at that! Don’t be a hero, son. You’re in no condition to go back out there.
FREESE: Look at what? What are you talking about?
TONY: Trainer! Get the stretcher!
TRAINER: What happened?
TONY: It’s too awful to talk about. Just help me get him into the clubhouse.
FREESE: I’m fine! Let me go. What the hell are you doing?
TONY and the TRAINER drag FREESE down into the clubhouse. They return a few moments later.
TONY: Aaron, get that bat boy’s uniform off. You’re going in.
From the end of the bench, RANDY WINN, who has observed the entire scene looks to NICK STAVINOHA
STAVINOHA: Look, I know what you’re thinking, but it’s not like that. What if Miles is the game-winning run in extra innings?
WINN: That doesn’t even make sense. No one can predict the outcome of events with one hundred percent certainty, but putting Aaron Miles in in this situation reduces the likelihood of us winning this game because he is incredibly unlikely to be that winning run and he sucks at defense. How can Tony possibly justify such a gross display of favoritism or mismanagement?
STAV: Because Tony Larussa?

lolwut. GET AWAY.
my bet would be that winn, like gotay, are really lefty hitters
that added switch-hitting to their toolboxes/resumes. until proven wrong, i maintain that 90% of big league switcheroos are righties who learned to hit lefty for its inherent advantages – most pitchers righty, closer to first. there is really not much to be said for lefties learning to bat righty.

Winn value is tied up in his defense and LHP
At this point in their careers I would have to say Jay is the superior fielder and Winn has been horid vs LHP this year.

Winn's had shit luck for a couple of years on batted balls
I think he could still be pretty good as a generic 4th OF (although there is a chance he’s gone completely off a cliff). He’s a good defender & if he still has it offensively will probably have a higher wOBA than Jay would.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
king of comida did suck
i disagreed, some others didn’t, but he was brought in for otto in the sixth inning to face fielder when we were up 4-1 and otto had thrown about 75 pitches, including striking out counsell with the bases loaded and two outs the previous inning. braun led off with a single in the 6th and tony went to king of comida, who sucked badly. my opinion was you either leave otto in, or start the inning with reyes. after all, counsell is a lefty and we didn’t make a switch there, and that was a bigger moment. otto’s last pitch was a 94 mph fastball on outer half that braun took up the middle. he certainly didn’t look tired, so the only conclusion is tony was going to make the switch no matter what, in which case i think he should have just began the inning with reyes. i don’t particularly like how they have handled otto either start. they handle garcia differently.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
yeah, I see your point. Should've started off the inning with Reyes, or just left Ottavino in for the whole inning.
blarg
Thanks, CN - Reyes last two innings outings are worrisome. Miles cannot be taken seriously by anyone not named Tony
Greene has to reappear if Boog/Freese are more than day to day
An optimist is a man who upon discovering that a rose smells better than a cabbage concludes it will make better soup.
HL Mencken
tony says he'll test the young guys, see what they can do
which i agree with. but what bigger test was there than the inning before? i have to think he was pulling him after braun whether an out or a hit, and that pisses me off as an otto fan that they would use him basically as a roogy there. garcia’s first couple starts they handled very well, and it appears they have a different standard with otto, who i have really high hopes for as a middle-rotation guy going forward.

anyone know what constitutes a 300 dollar shot?
i’m guessing it must be some rare scotch or cognac but didn’t get any details. just spoke with my sister, who was at wrigley for our boy john ely’s start there, and afterward russell martin took john and his local buds out on the town, and they were drinking 300 dollar shots on martin, but my sis didn’t know what that entailed – she taught ely in grade school, so he’s not the most forthcoming still. anyway, he loves living on the beach in LA in martin’s house. i left a message to get to the bottom of this shot thing, but they seem to be in the midst of a game right now, though my mlb.tv is refusing to go there.

but in chicago, new york, la, i’m sure it’s not such an outrage, but what the fuck is it – gotta be a cognac, which amuses me thinking of these players/friends doing it as shots.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I've had Louis XIII cognac (thanks stoopid rich uncle!) which is 1500 a bottle retail
I’d imagine at a bar it’d go for 300 a shot (although apparently most places will get a top end bottle and end up refilling it with “cheaper” stuff). I would hope to god they aren’t downing it like a true shot though.

i’ve had that at dinner parties, but never in a bar. they had to be shooting something like that. it’s kind of funny, but sort of offensive. i’ll be sure to find out, especially since they lost that game 1-0 – ely should have been in his room thinking about that!!

Yeah, I'm hoping a lot for a big comeback from him too.
He seems like such a great guy, and I’d love to see him get back to his 2003-2006 form (except against us…). Another guy I’m really rooting for is Francisco Liriano, who seems to finally be back. I don’t even care that he hosed my fantasy team last year….

glaus just hit a bomb
tomcat, if you’re around, when does ubaldo pitch again? mlb.com rocks site takes down probables after the conclusion of a game, apparently, and nothing on purple row. i don’t know where else to look, other than waiting until tomorrow when probables are listed again.

I was just trying to figure that out earlier
He should be pitching tomorrow.

What part of the world are you in, cardball?
I only ask cuz you oughta go catch a game at Marion. They’ve got a Frontier League team that’s usually not bad. But the thing I get a kick out of the most is the field, it’s made of that new kind of turf….the entire thing. There is no dirt. where there is supposed to be dirt, there’s brown turf. It’s the damndest thing I’ve ever seen. That and reserved seats are like $8.

Yeah, I know.
But they never have rain outs they just wait for it to quit and squeegee the field off. It’s not any different from an all weather track. It didn’t really impede play that I could tell.

Yep. it's just like that Smurf turf that Boise St, plays football on. It has little finger thingies that act like grass too.
You really gotta see it in person. I’m not saying that I would want to play on it all the time, but it is a novel idea.

Yep, that's it.
That would save a ton of money on mowing and watering.
