Nice start to the inning.

Sad walk back to the dugout for Braun.

Award Time!!!

This will be a limited awards ceremony since I was in and out of the game today…

First off The Ralph Wiggum Memorial Trophy for Butchering of the English Language goes to whoever sung Empire State of Mind at the Belmont… sweet jevus that was awful. Coming in second was Colby for the post game interview.

The Old Yeller Award for an Old Timer Who’s Past His Prime goes to Jim Edmonds for not fielding the ball on the Colby game winner.

The Thursty Award for Baserunning Fail goes to Skippy for sliding into first… knock that shit off or you’ll have a room full of these bad boys.

The Freeze-Pop Award for Most Outstanding Play by a Young Player goes to Ottavino for a good start.

Congrats to all the winners.

my bet would be that winn, like gotay, are really lefty hitters

that added switch-hitting to their toolboxes/resumes. until proven wrong, i maintain that 90% of big league switcheroos are righties who learned to hit lefty for its inherent advantages – most pitchers righty, closer to first. there is really not much to be said for lefties learning to bat righty.

Winn value is tied up in his defense and LHP

At this point in their careers I would have to say Jay is the superior fielder and Winn has been horid vs LHP this year.

by FlimtotheFlam on Jun 5, 2010 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Winn's had shit luck for a couple of years on batted balls

I think he could still be pretty good as a generic 4th OF (although there is a chance he’s gone completely off a cliff). He’s a good defender & if he still has it offensively will probably have a higher wOBA than Jay would.

My guess is

if Freese has to miss any more games, they’ll shift Lopex to 3rd, play Boog at SS and Skip 2nd. IIRC it’s already been done a couple times.

king of comida did suck

i disagreed, some others didn’t, but he was brought in for otto in the sixth inning to face fielder when we were up 4-1 and otto had thrown about 75 pitches, including striking out counsell with the bases loaded and two outs the previous inning. braun led off with a single in the 6th and tony went to king of comida, who sucked badly. my opinion was you either leave otto in, or start the inning with reyes. after all, counsell is a lefty and we didn’t make a switch there, and that was a bigger moment. otto’s last pitch was a 94 mph fastball on outer half that braun took up the middle. he certainly didn’t look tired, so the only conclusion is tony was going to make the switch no matter what, in which case i think he should have just began the inning with reyes. i don’t particularly like how they have handled otto either start. they handle garcia differently.

tony says he'll test the young guys, see what they can do

which i agree with. but what bigger test was there than the inning before? i have to think he was pulling him after braun whether an out or a hit, and that pisses me off as an otto fan that they would use him basically as a roogy there. garcia’s first couple starts they handled very well, and it appears they have a different standard with otto, who i have really high hopes for as a middle-rotation guy going forward.

anyone know what constitutes a 300 dollar shot?

i’m guessing it must be some rare scotch or cognac but didn’t get any details. just spoke with my sister, who was at wrigley for our boy john ely’s start there, and afterward russell martin took john and his local buds out on the town, and they were drinking 300 dollar shots on martin, but my sis didn’t know what that entailed – she taught ely in grade school, so he’s not the most forthcoming still. anyway, he loves living on the beach in LA in martin’s house. i left a message to get to the bottom of this shot thing, but they seem to be in the midst of a game right now, though my mlb.tv is refusing to go there.

I've had Louis XIII cognac (thanks stoopid rich uncle!) which is 1500 a bottle retail

I’d imagine at a bar it’d go for 300 a shot (although apparently most places will get a top end bottle and end up refilling it with “cheaper” stuff). I would hope to god they aren’t downing it like a true shot though.

i’ve had that at dinner parties, but never in a bar. they had to be shooting something like that. it’s kind of funny, but sort of offensive. i’ll be sure to find out, especially since they lost that game 1-0 – ely should have been in his room thinking about that!!

I only ask cuz you oughta go catch a game at Marion. They’ve got a Frontier League team that’s usually not bad. But the thing I get a kick out of the most is the field, it’s made of that new kind of turf….the entire thing. There is no dirt. where there is supposed to be dirt, there’s brown turf. It’s the damndest thing I’ve ever seen. That and reserved seats are like $8.
