I looked at taking the train from here to STL this year.

I’ve always wanted to do a cross country train trip. The cost made it impossible. I was shocked at the price of tickets, something like $950 per.

I don't know,

I can kind of see their point. What Albert does would piss us off if Prince Fielder did it; it might also piss Albert off if he saw Prince Fielder do it. Looking at home runs and tossing the bat like he does is inconsistent with whining on the record about the untuck. I love the guy, but it is.

by DanUpBaby on Jun 4, 2010 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

i pretty much agree with that

they are slightly different in that the bat toss is more a heat of the moment thing and the untucking a spirit of the moment thing, perhaps, but essentially we’re talking about behavior that doesn’t bother one’s own fans but bothers all opposing fans – at least the bat toss does from reading other sites; not sure if all other fans feel quite like us about the untucking.

you don’t make the rules. just saying, there’s a way to do things and a way to not. the d’backs guys were great that hung here when we played, with the eels and all, and we had a good time over there too. i know when we played frisco, it may have been voxx, i forget, but he was welcomed there and had fun. one of their guys was here, and it was all cool. but i’m not sure this was at all the case here, but i’m not going to bother to check.

They do that in basketball too.

Incredibly annoying.

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

Having an argument with a friend.

He says Vlad Guererro is not a Hall of Famer if he retired today, because he was a ‘power hitter, who didn’t hit 500 homers’.

I called him an idiot, of course, but the fact that he was an incredible power/speed player who had about 10 straight years in the 1.000 OPS range apparently means nothing to the common fan.

Maybe I’m off base here? Is this the common thought regarding Vlad? Good player, but not HoF worthy? I didn’t really thing there was any question about him making it.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on Jun 4, 2010 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe not if he retires today.

But he’s in line with his career averages during his age 35 season. DH’ing in Texas, he could very well be quite productive for a few more years yet, approaching that magical 500 mark, and pushing his hit total closer to 3000. Considering the speed element, and the fact that he had an amazing arm (though I doubt this would be taken into consideration at all), and he could be a first ballot guy.

But yeah, probably depends who he retires with, and who gets in during next few years.

by Voxx on Jun 4, 2010 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

No chance first ballot...

he’s borderline at best. Yes he was a good hitter, but he was a corner outfielder. You have to absolutely rake to get in as a corner outfielder.

Think; It's not illegal yet.

by azruavatar on Jun 4, 2010 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Career longevity...

I dunno. He had a very, very good sustained stretch. He’s never had otherworldly seasons, although posting an OPS of 1.000+ with ~40 steals is pretty amazing, but he’s had what, around 10-11 straight years of excellence, before a couple injury-plagued ones with the Angels? Now he appears to be back on track this season.

There aren’t many guys who were as good as he’s been for as long as he was. There are guys with better counting stats….but stretching your career on 5-6 years as a middling player will do that to some guys.

by Voxx on Jun 4, 2010 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Depends on the ankle.

If he’s batting though, it must be ok.

Sure we are derisive toward counting stats.

Last year, based on counting stats, Wainright should have won the Cy – but no one around here disagreed with Lincecum winning it. Superior is superior, and Wins are not a measurement of such.

Ubaldo has been great this year. It’s arguable that Hallday has pitched better, though – just with worse results. The FIP/xFIP vs. ERA arguments.

by Voxx on Jun 4, 2010 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but those measurements don't measure what a pitcher did just what they

would do in a vacuum, Ubaldo had a 6BB performance which didn’t help his 2.6 FIP but he also no hit the opponent so the walks didn’t matter.

It's been extremely close.

So a few balls find the holes against Halladay, and Ubaldo has a BABIP against of what, about .220? Ubaldo has had much better results, while they’ve actually pitched to similar levels of dominance.

Ubaldo won’t have a .220 BABIP against, and a 95% strand rate forever.

by Voxx on Jun 4, 2010 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah but don't pretend a 95% strand rate is an accident either

there have been several mid-high 80% strand rates and even if you tripled Ubaldos ERA it would still be below Timmys the last two years

95% strand rate, while not an 'accident'

is merely a function of the solid K rate, and yes, a little bit of luck. A strand rate of 77-80% wouldn’t cause me to bat an eye. Where he’s at isn’t sustainable in the least.

Don't have a clue.

Probably in the 85-86% range, if I had to guess. That year was obscene. I seem to remember his FIP being like…1.8? Which is amazing beyond belief. As an example, Ubaldo’s FIP this season is 2.6

by cardball on Jun 4, 2010 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

He'll give up more hits than he has.

He’ll naturally have a lower BABIP than most due to the nature of his stuff, but it’ll regress closer to .260 than .220, which, in addition to his propensity to string some walks on occasion, will hurt him a little.

Mind you, I’m not disparaging Ubaldo’s performance at all so far this year. Just saying that while the results have been amazing, there’s been a little bit of a luck and timing element involved. That’s always going to be the case for ‘Nintendo-like’ numbers, though, unless your K/BB rates are off the chart.

by Voxx on Jun 4, 2010 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

That could be true but the guy is

Time is the best teacher; Unfortunately it kills all its students

by TomCat009 on Jun 4, 2010 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

For the year to actually be

‘historic’, I think he’ll need to trim the walks, ‘and’ up his K rate. Or maybe just trim the walks.

Baseball is a fickle game, unfortunately. Balls put in play occasionally find holes. Sometimes they do it a few times in a row, even when hit on the ground, and not terribly hard.

If Ubaldo can bring his walk rate down under 2, I’ll be sold on him, entirely. But that’s going to be pretty tough to do, considering the amount of movement he gets.

If you just have to settle for an awesome year, instead of a historic one…. somehow I can’t imagine you’ll be all that upset about it.

And an awesome year is about what I expect. Something in the range of a 2.5 era with a K/BB rate around 3.

The formatting on the tables makes my eyes hurt.

But yeah, he’s ‘only’ had a few bad starts in terms of walks…but over the course of a season, that tendency will hurt him in rate stats. Not sure ‘why’ he has nights like that.

Mechanical inconsistency? Don’t really know. All I’m really saying is, if he’s going to have those games, you’re going to have to be prepared for his end-year stats to be less shiny than you’d like.

Walks + balls in play finding holes = bad combination. I’m looking forwards to seeing what he does for the rest of the year, though. I’m just trying to be realistic – 0.78 is amazing, but…. 2.5 or so is more likely. Still awesome, of course.

No just that for years

Rockies fans have had to hear why their hitters are actually not very good and are only good because they play at Coors. Well unlike Timmeh, Ubaldo plays half of his games at Coors and is still dominant. If Todd Helton’s .372 /.463 /.698 with 42hrs and 59 doubles is only good for fifth in the MVP then Ubaldo better get the converse weight in his stats.

Regarding the 'Inverse Coors Effect'

I don’t think Coors really has the same reputation that it did back in Helton’s prime.

I don’t have the park factors in front of me or anything, but isn’t Coors actually middle of the pack these days, as opposed to an extreme Hitter’s Park?

he's got a third of the season in the books

though – sort of like the pythags we took a look at earlier, if you were around for that, where teams are projected with winning records yet a negative run differential, because of what they already have in the books.

if his era triples from here on out, it will still fall well below the 2.5 overall – i think you have to account for what’s in the books. unless you think his era here on out will be more like 4.

i do know his highest walk game was the no-hitter, so there’s that. his other game of high walk total, maybe tomcat knows how he did in that game.

by cardball on Jun 5, 2010 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Top 10 in NL?

Yeah, I’d say so. I think his true talent level lies in the low 3’s, unless he can consistently churn out a respectable walk rate. You can’t really just wish away bad starts, walk-wise – bad starts happen, even if he’s been fortunate with balls in play in his high walk games so far this year.

He’ll regress somewhat, and still pitch well the rest of this season, but he’ll get nickel and dimed a few times when his control leaves him, and it’ll deflate the more conventional stats a bit.

ZIPS has him at 2.68 at year end, and 3.77 going forwards. I think he’ll be a little under that, closer to 2.5 / 3.5.

Sure, he had 6 walks in a start.

We call it a good start for some reason, because he was fortunate enough that all balls were catchable/able to be converted into outs. What if his BABIP that game had even been on line with his season average?

Those walks get moved around, possibly even score, and instead of calling it a good game and ignoring the high walk total, it’d be a point of concern.

Regarding Lincecum, I dunno. I’d say taking the past into account, Lincecum is a safer bet to have better control going forwards, although he ‘has’ been struggling as of late. Makes me wonder if he’s trying to work through a nagging injury or something.

Smoltz and Carp

both were fairly wild in their younger days. Carp was just bad, to go along with being wild.

I’m not denying that Ubaldo could post better walk rates as he gets older, and in fact, I expect that to happen. When he loses a mph or two off of that heater, he’ll need to command it a little bit better, or he won’t be nearly as effective.

But right now, his walk rate is a little too high for him to consistently pitch as well as he has been. It’s indicative of a few poor performances going forwards. Everyone you’ve listed with high walk rates when they were younger had these poor performances mixed in with some excellent starts (or just poor performances, in some cases).

I’m not really sure where any of this is going. Ubaldo has pitched well, and he’ll continue to be good – just he’ll end up with results more fitting of how well he has pitched, instead of results that don’t accurately portray his performance.

Even ending the year even under 3 would have to be a great success for the kid. As he matures as a pitcher, I expect his command to get better, and perhaps add another pitch to his arsenal to counter a slight drop in velocity. Most of the pitchers mentioned with high walk rates early in their careers did just that, after all. Splitters and cutters in particular.

sorry about the walkoff just happened

in the last game he pitched against lincecum, the giants announcers acknowledged that ubaldo had the best stuff in the league – best stuff, not best fastball.

He hasn't used the slider much this year

and it’s been pretty ineffective when he has. But he’s compensated by throwing the changeup more than ever, and his changeup is a nasty, nasty pitch.

Not sure why he’s throwing the slider so much less, though. Perhaps he felt a little discomfort from it? Or maybe just feels the changeup is a better pitch to throw in some similar situations.

Yeah, certainly not.

My guess is he used the slider in favorable pitchers counts last year, which, of course, are going to generate good results on the pitch – even if the pitch itself isn’t amazing. He somewhat replaced the slider in some of those counts with the changeup this year – for much improved results.

This leads to the slider being what it is – an average ‘look at me’ pitch, and the changeup being showcased as a truly top notch out pitch.

This make sense?

I love Yadi. Bengie is just a bad baseball player at this point in his career, and handled things badly with the Posey situation.

Posey needs to be catching, and Bengie won’t accept a backup job. Bit petty of him, honestly, and makes him a poor teammate. Cutting him, or trading him for almost nothing is the only viable course of action.

Mm. Maybe.

I’d have been okay with opening the year with Whiteside as the starting catcher, and Holm or something as the backup, until they called Posey up to take over starting duties at the start of June.

There was some interesting things I looked at regarding Catching ERA’s that showed Whiteside as being much, much better than Bengie. Even enough to make him a viable starting option for most teams, overriding his anemic bat.

It was a solid business decision, or at least a defensible one, to have Posey stay in minors until June of this year. I don’t begrudge Sebean that. The decision to have Bengie on the roster, I do blame him for.

The decision to keep giving the guy starts, I blame Bochy for (who really is a god awful manager). The Burrell signing by the Giants was likewise….questionable.

thing about posey is

they thought him a bit raw as a catcher, and wanted him catching every day in the minors and working with a catching coach. tough to just turn your staff, which is why you could be in contention, over to a rookie catcher. they finally caved because they needed a bat, and so were willing to put him at first, but his bat doesn’t play as well there, and he’s not really considered, by them, to be an everyday catcher yet at this level.

I don't know about that

This year, Wainwright’s FIP is slightly higher, and his xFIP is lower. And that’s not including his shutout last night. If you recalculate his ERA for the shoutout, it’s only 2.04, which is over a point higher than Jimenez’, but not that much larger than the xFIP gap this season between the two. So I would say that Jimenez has pitched better so far this season, but not by a huge margin.

And if you look at previous seasons and projections, Wainwright blows him away.

by vivaelpujols on Jun 5, 2010 2:57 AM EDT up reply actions

right now though ubaldo is the class of the major leagues

that could all change (i don’t think it will, because he can even get better), but for right now i don’t know how he hasn’t been the most dominant pitcher this year. arguably his worst game was a no-hitter where he was throwing upper 90’s in the 9th – maybe that’s a little nolan ryanesque.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on Jun 5, 2010 4:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Still don't know how people say he's unquestionably been the most dominant. Numbers don't really lie.

FIP Leaders:

2.31 Halladay
2.40 Liriano
2.60 Jimenez
2.61 Wainright
2.66 Johnson

Perhaps it’s in how you view dominance. His K rate is solid, but not really anything special. Walk rate is better than it has been in the past, but still is a tad on the high side. He’s been very fortunate with batted ball results, both HR/FB and BABIP.

He’s unquestionably had very good results, but he hasn’t pitched all that much better than a handful of others, but all metrics that measure such things.

Regarding xFIP, which is, without question, the best metric we have for predicting future results… I think we’d need to weight it slightly for someone that generates the movement Ubaldo does. He’s going to have a HR/FB rate slightly lower than the league average, but it’s going to be higher than 1.6%, as well. 8% sounds about right, in my book. A ‘stuff-adjusted xFIP’ (switching HR/FB rate modifier to 0.08 instead of 0.11) would give Ubaldo an adjFIP in the 3.2 range, which honestly sounds about right.

by Voxx on Jun 5, 2010 8:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Ubaldo also probably has the ability to generate worse contact on balls in play

So I’d be comfortable giving him a .280 BABIP going forward and a 7.5% HR/FB. But those numbers are still astronomically higher than his current ones, and would push his expected ERA into the high 2’s range.

I don’t know why cardball is so infatuated with Jimenez. Sure he has amazing stuff, but he doesn’t get a lot of strikeouts, walks a bit too many hitters, and has a good, but not elite ground ball rate.

This year, Wainwright has pitched slightly more innings per start, more strikeouts per 9, fewer walks per 9, and an identical ground ball rate. And according to FanGraphs batted ball data, the two have allowed a similar amount of line drives (13.3% for Ubaldo vs. 14.9% for Wainwright).

You really can’t make a statistical case that Ubaldo has been better than Wainwright THIS YEAR, not even considering past results. The ONLY advantage Ubaldo has on Wainwright is a lower ERA, and we know that is influenced by many other things than pitcher skill. Even then, Wainwright’s ERA is right at 2.05, which isn’t that much higher than Ubaldo’s.

It’s absolutely ridiculous to say that Jimenez has unquestionably been the best pitcher in the major leagues. Among pitchers with at least 50 innings pitched this year, Ubaldo has the 4th best FIP (and BARELY above Wainwright and Johnson), and the 15th best xFIP.

Obviously there is a lot more to pitching that what is captured in FIP or xFIP, but not nearly as much as the ERA discrepancy is. Ubaldo is getting lucky, plain and simple. He threw a complete game shutout no-hitter, with 6 walks and 7 strikeouts and allowed more fly balls than groundballs. That is CLEARLY an astronomically lucky start and given his freaking .223 BABIP this year, he’s been getting lucky in other starts as well.

You can say that Ubaldo has the best fastball in the majors and his command might improve, but as of this moment, there are many other pitchers who are pitching better this year and project better into the future than Jimenez.

by vivaelpujols on Jun 5, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

It comes down to Performance vs. Results, in my mind.

Ubaldo, without question, has had the best results so far this year. You can’t really argue with what 0.78 ERA means to a team, no matter how lucky/fortunate/fluky it was.

I covered almost every one of your points (and agreeing with them) in the subthread down (up? whatever) this thread. Average K rate. High BB rate. Mediocre K/BB rate. Low BABIP. Low HR/FB rate. Unsustainable LOB rate.

What Ubaldo does have going for him is an absolutely filthy fastball/changeup combo – the best in baseball, in my mind. This does generate a lot of weak contact – impacting the ‘luck’ driven factors more than one might like to admit. I’d feel pretty comfortable with him ending the year around 2.5 era. He may well win 22+ games, for whatever that’s worth (not much, if anything), and will have had an incredibly successful season considering the expectations for him this year.

If Ubaldo can manage to command his unquestionably filthy stuff a little bit better, develop a plus third pitch – I’d prefer a curve, cutter, or split (his current curve is pretty meh, and it’s an ideal out pitch compared to his functional, but gb-inducing slider), he could evolve into the best pitcher in the game, by any metric. He’s still young, he’s still able to improve command. His control isn’t ‘that’ bad, it’s just not nearly elite. If he can improve it…..

At any rate. He’s a lot of fun to watch, and I’m tired of having to point out the same things over and over regarding his past and future performance. So this is my last post regarding Ubaldo, for now. Peace.

by vivaelpujols on Jun 6, 2010 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions

eh, i don't believe in predicting the future

you are giving jimenez an 8% rate, which is what lohse had in 2008. we are only looking at what has happened, to date, anyway. you put up one stat, FIP, and he’s third on that – that’s great. he’s first in era – that’s great. for a groundball pitcher, he gets a good number of k’s – that’s great. he throws upper 90’s late into games – that’s great. he has a nasty change – that’s great.

i don’t know how much you’ve seen him this year, but he has just dominated. i haven’t seen that for awhile, so excuse me for being appreciative of his performances. and he’s consistent – hasn’t had a single bad or mediocre start.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on Jun 5, 2010 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

You still haven't shown that Ubaldo has been the best pitcher in the majors this year!

Among starters with at least 50 innings pitched this year, Jimenez ranks the following in a plethora of pitching stats:

FIP: 4th
ERA: 1st
xFIP: 15th
SIERA: 15th

Of course neither of these stats are perfect, but the only one that Ubaldo leads in is ERA, and you know I can give you a 100 reasons why ERA might be wrong in this case. I could also give you 100 reasons why xFIP might be wrong, but that’s besides the point.

In only one pitching metric does Ubaldo rank the best so far this year. In the three others listed (I’m sure there are more, but those are the three readily available) he ranks anywhere from the 4th to the 15th best.

If you want to average each of those 4 metrics out, you get Ubaldo with an expected ERA of 2.56. If you do that for Wainwright, you get an expected ERA of 2.67 – hardly a difference. If you do that for Halladay, you get an expected ERA of 2.56 – identical to Ubaldo. If you do that for Cliff Lee, you get an expected ERA of 2.56 as well. Josh Johnson = 2.78.

Based on those 4 stats, Ubaldo is not clearly pitching better than anyone in the ML. Wainwright, Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay are right there with him.

no, i agree

they say there are beatles folks and stones folks (or maybe elvis was one?) – i think there are waino people and carp people. last year i thought carp should win the cy, and still think waino will never be at-his-best carp. that doesn’t mean i don’t think waino is great, because i do, but i’m a carp guy – in other words, i could never disparage him.

perhaps we still have strings on Mark Mulder, too. Wonder if the DBAX would take him in a trade for Haren?

They could have a hell of the DL with Brandon Webb and MM

but we don’t care, really. they’re just depressed d-bags. i can see why, but they don’t have to trash us when they’re the ones who don’t set a good example.

That whole team is going to get sliced and diced...

Monumental disapointment. I was living down there a few years ago and they had the blue chip prospects stacked like cord wood. Drew, Jackson, Quentin, Upton, Reynolds, Carlos Gonzalez, Brett Anderson, Chris Young…

So Wainwright sent us into first twice today.

OK, so instead of watching Waino pitch possibly the most brilliant game of his career thus far

I was at the Kansas / Foreigner / Styx show. Yup.

So anyway, when the appropriate sentimental moment arrived in the show, it struck me.. yeah I bet they do. And sure enough, there was a virtual lighter app for my phone. Biggest. Dork. Ever. But it entertained the family for a few minutes.

no idea about your concert techno speak, but used to be a big Kansas fan. although not as good as the Brit alternatives, Gentle Giant, Genesis, Yes, etc., not to mention the Canadian ones.

Great game tonight

followed by a good fireworks show. I thought about getting a scorecard on the way in, then didn’t ‘cause I figured I wouldn’t be able to keep it up and help corral the grandson. Now I wish I had! That has to be the best game by a Card’s pitcher I’ve ever seen in person. Once we got in the shade, it wasn’t even very hot. I don’t imagine I’ll be as comfortable tomorrow although our tics are supposed to be in the shade.

Just finished up the replay

big grin from Waino after the last out. That had to feel fantastic. Hell, I had no idea it was his first shutout. I thought it was his first CGSO. How did he not have a shutout before now. Hard to believe.

by Voxx on Jun 5, 2010 1:58 AM EDT up reply actions

A shutout that the bullpen finishes?

I guess the starter doesn’t get credit in that case, though (shrug).

Not really.

Shutting out the opponent is awesome no matter how many pitchers it takes.

by spants on Jun 5, 2010 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

a shutout is by definition a complete game by one pitcher

so when you name one pitcher – waino- and say he had a shutout, then that means it was a complete game. thus, no need to be redundant. we know it is a complete game. by adding the phrase, it implies you don’t know the definition of shutout. you can say someone pitched 7 shutout innings, but you can’t say someone pitched a 7-inning shutout.

I just went over to take a look at Brew Crew ball

and that is the saddest excuse for a baseball blog Ive ever seen. It was nothing but whining, hateful comments towards opposing players (that include wishing opposing players got hurt), and pessimism.

I didnt see a single informed post over there and they took a shot a Cardinals fans, Busch Stadium, and Albert Pujols every chance they got.

Its gotta have something to do with the initials BCB.
