In Case of Emergency, Apply This Gamethread - Game 76

8300_medium Caveman5_medium
Chris Carpenter Dan Haren

The temperature is relatively mild, as far as recent nights go, so Carpenter should only sweat through 2 jerseys tonight.

Carpenter is bruised and fuming on the inside, no doubt.  I'm sure the best medicine for getting drilled on the pitching forearm would be some RUN SUPPORT.  As this Gamethread is born, the Cardinals quickly jump out to a 2-0 lead.

Random note...how many times have we played the Diamondbacks this year, seriously?

Commence the eeling.

can someone explain this "out of pocket"

when did it start to mean incommunicado, or off-line, rather than it’s traditional meaning, such as out-of-pocket expenses?

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on Jun 28, 2010 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Out of pocket

meaning like a quarterback out of the pocket. Fang hasn’t been here.

I’m pretty sure in big situations, they’d walk him [Pujols] to get to Babe Ruth.-- Matt Holliday

by il rosso on Jun 28, 2010 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

i know what people are saying lately when they are using this

but when did this happen? it is a very old expression that meant nothing like that.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on Jun 28, 2010 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Um.

That’s a fairly traditional football term.

I’m pretty sure in big situations, they’d walk him [Pujols] to get to Babe Ruth.-- Matt Holliday

by il rosso on Jun 28, 2010 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, mr obvious

out of THE pocket in football, but out of pocket is an old saying that has to do with the cost of something being on you, such as expenses. i don’t think this new meaning has anything to do with football, tbh, without the THE. so i am left wondering – perhaps people started using it thinking it meant something it didn’t?

This is what I could find in a quick search
(3) Unavailable: I first came across this meaning in the early 1980s when I was a staff editor at the New York Times. Reporters who had filed stories were supposed to supply phone numbers where they could be reached in case questions arose. If a reporter was unreachable (say, on a plane to Tibet), he or she was said to be "out of pocket." The OED cites published references for this meaning dating back to 1946, though it didn’t become common until the 1970s.

this one is better
When your 20-something year old hooker is in town and you won’t be going into work for the day because you’ll be busy banging her, put on the calendar that you’re “out of pocket” so that way no one at your work will really know what you’re doing. This works best if you’re a 40+ year old perverted and fugly old man that looks like a penguin.
I will be out of pocket for the rest of the afternoon

he had a hit and scored when we needed it

almost made a web gem catch, and hit the ball on the nose last time up but right at the drawn-in shortstop – couple feet either way and it’s a hit and one or two rbi’s. i’d say he had a pretty decent game.

those 3 runs aren’t on carp. besides, you can’t credit winn with 2 runs because had it gone off the wall one run would have scored anyway.

it's a nice bonus though

and i’m saying back in the day oswalt would make the list, but not today, so age matters somewhat because aging has caused his decline, which is present. kershaw, age not a factor, is better than those last five, even though i think gallardo is underrated.

Part of me thinks someone who hasn’t even played half of the season so far shouldn’t be in, but the other part of me wants the NL to win and knows that having him pitch in that game would help that cause.

Of course, the NL will inevitably lose because someone like Ryan Doumit will be on the team and be in late in the game and fuck things up.

well its a shelby miller + prospects for lee

which i think is a bad idea because giving up 4+ years of Miller is not worth 4 months of Lee…. if we have to give up more than lee i am vehemently opposed….

I'm hoping for baseless.

I really don’t want to see any fabrege eggs traded for a 3 month rental. Not that we have any real eggs beyond Miller left. It doesn’t matter how much pitching we have if we don’t hit on a regular basis.

yeah

that’s not what I’m hoping for. weren’t they also scouting haren also? I think the only reason they’d trade Miller is if they think he will be injury prone or something like that

*now with more veterany veteranness and a higher grit factor

by Cards Fan in Chitown on Jun 29, 2010 1:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Haren was more for scouting for games

and not necessarily for trading. They wanted to scout him for today’s game.

It really depends, for me anyway.

I want to see a few more starts from Jaime and/or evaluate Penny if at all possible in order to see if we have a good 3rd starter or not.

But, I am not willing to get rid of Shelby Miller at this juncture for him, and that is probably a deal-breaker at this point. They seem perfectly content to take the draft picks from the Yankees in the offseason (I don’t believe the “Lee will be traded in the next 7-10 days or so” rumor).

Until the White Sox recent resurgence, I would have loved to look at Mark Buehrle, who I think would be great in the NL, and especially good as a Cardinal.

if seattle is content to take the picks

maybe we should consider it too. i don’t think they will though. there will be a bidding war, and i think they want major-league ready talent, so that leaves us out. minnesota is my guess, and they will be tough.

I would guess Detroit

and they would probably have to deal either Porcello, Sizemore, or Jackson in any deal.

by Taskmaster on Jun 29, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

they should then

jackson isn’t even their best rookie outfielder. i don’t know sizemore. porcello might be a tough call – not following enough to know what his problem is. i think the minny catcher trumps them all though, and m’s desperate for that position whereas minny not so much.

I think that the Twins are philisophically opposed to dealing for rentals

to even attempt getting Lee. They did go for Cabrera last year, but Lee is going to cost a lot more than Cabrera did. Now, they might not need Ramos, but maybe they would rather go for infield depth? Like a SS or a 3b?

Liriano has pitched like an ace this year, while Pavano has been at least a solid #2. If anything, they might acquire a lower key SP target like Guthrie or Bannister.

by Taskmaster on Jun 29, 2010 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

i think they will pick up a third baseman

but nobody that would cost them ramos. more like a wiggington. but i think they realize they have a really good shot at the ws this year, and first year in the park and all, they have so much in the minors, like sano and a couple of’ers, that they wouldn’t miss ramos and would be a legit ws threat with lee and liriano, who is a great 2 but an ok 1. i know normally they wouldn’t do a rental like that, but this year is different, and they could do something special. if they just want to make the playoffs they can do nothing, or pick up a wiggington to be sure, but i believe they go for it all this year, and i think they should.

Heilman was tagged with the loss and didn’t allow a hit or a walk, the second pitcher in franchise history to do so (the first being Randy Choate in September 2006).

they just played dumb down the stretch

Heilman should have thrown to first and LaRoche was probably pushing it going to home when the game would’ve been tied….

Also Heilman made a real nice play IMO grabbing the ball in the first place otherwise it could have been bases loaded nobody out

heilman had an easy out at third

he made the right choice, just a poor throw. and laroche had an out at home, so why let us tie it. he just couldn’t get the ball out of his glove, so yeah, at that point maybe he should have taken the out at first.

he deserved indefinite suspension and not getting paid, even though cubs would have had to play a man short on the bench.

apparently the snakepit senses some difficulty in dealing haren

so they have come up with a new marketing strategy:

“It was Haren’s twentieth hit of the year…While going 1-for-4 this evening dropped his batting average to a “mere” .435, his slugging percentage increased to .630 and his OPS to 1.065. Know how many of the 219 NL players with Haren’s 47 PAs or more, have an OPS above 1.065? None at all. Admittedly, this won’t help our chance of trading him to the American League in the slightest. But, people! 1.065 OPS! That’s better than Albert Pujols’ career number. Buy now, while Haren lasts!"
