Sorry, I disagree.

He knows where he is. He knows that unless he gets out in front of this, Detroit fans will actually physically accost and harass his ass for the rest of his life. Some still will. But this was the only course of action, thanks to that video, that anyone with half a brain cell would have chosen. Anything else is suicide.

And frankly, I don’t feel I need to congratulate someone for doing what he’s supposed to do – admit when he fucked up. You don’t get applause for that. You shouldn’t. That anyone thinks he deserves any kudos for that shows some slippage in our collective standards.

i can see your point

lot of umps would’ve called him out even if they thought he wasn’t – this guy made a horrible mistake, but he wasn’t afraid to call it like he saw it

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on Jun 2, 2010 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

ya

though if he automatically calls him out b/c its the last out of the PG, and galarraga did actually bobble the ball, he’s like the ump from the Halladay PG (howard pulled his foot on the last out).
that could have been going through his head as the play went down – and then he totally botched it

typical first baseman move

apu does it all the time on routine to fairly close plays. halladay was getting calls a foot outside the zone, though.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on Jun 2, 2010 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

i guess what i'm saying

is that while the ump has to make sure he doesn’t make a bad call to blow the PG, he also has to watch out for making a biased call to fulfill the PG (perhaps like Halladays).

different, isn't it?

we’re talking about the third out of the game. if dekinger had called him out in 85, KC still has 2 more outs in the inning (or 1? can’t remember). the right call wouldn’t have necessarily ended the game.

never gonna happen when on the same night a bad call ended a game in seattle

they’re certainly not going to go back and overturn that, and it was more important. there’s just no system in place that allows for instant replay to be used except on the home run calls, and these both would require using instant replay, and retroactively at that.

You know who I feel bad for?

Ken Griffey Jr. He’s been overshadowed by so many controversies not involving him throughout his career. So what happens when he decides to retire? An umpire makes one of the worst calls ever.

by FlimtotheFlam on Jun 2, 2010 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

The guy deserves better.

However, I am sure Griffey doesn’t mind not getting attention. If he didn’t even call a conference or show up to his last game, then I think he wants to stay away from being an icon for a while.

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

pretty similar

both first-round picks, though stubbs picked 8th overall. this being his first full year, he’s looking pretty good. he does have light-tower power, and is ops’ing around .950 the last month since being moved down in the order. definitely a talent, but colby has a bit of big-league experience on him. i’d still rather have colby, but stubbs looks really good.

As of right now

Rasmus = Stubbs

I am 95% confident after finishing their career, Rasmus will be much better than Stubbs. Once he can hit the outside pitch the other way, which he is showing signs of… he will be an MVP caliber player.

by thewizard3 on Jun 2, 2010 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions

one thing about stubbs though

is he sucked offensively at the top of the order, and since being moved down to, i believe 7th, he has really hit well.

Wow, Red Reporter doesn't seem too enlightened to me.

Kinda sucks when your lineup doesn’t hit .400 with RISP doesn’t it? Welcome to the fun world of LOBsters.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

yes, the newspapers are right; suck is general all over umpiredom.

suck was falling from a chubby first base umpire in the midwest, wrongly stating that the batter had gone around, falling sadly from a lanky umpire in southern california, calling strikes the other batter’s box, falling unrepentantly from a third base umpire in atlanta calling a runner out on a play where he was not positioned to even see the play. it was falling too from a boorish umpire in detroit who charged halfway to the mound, screaming obscenities, because the pitcher looked down in disgust at a called ball four. suck was falling in the house (adjacent to the original house) that ruth built. suck was falling in target field, at roughly the same rate as the snow from a freak june blizzard. galaraga’s soul swooned softly as he heard the suck falling faintly through the umpireverse, and faintly falling, like the descent of a contested ground-rule double, upon all the fair and the foul.

you can't open that can of worms though

remember cc with the brewers, losing a no-hitter because the official scorer gave a hit on a ball he bobbled and the guy beat it to first? an official scorer can change his decision, but you can’t overturn an ump’s judgment call.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on Jun 2, 2010 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

In all fairness it did look like he bobbled the ball.

I could care less about perfect games . Anything over a complete game shutout is icing on the cake. How many guys pitch a perfect game and disapear. I would rather have a pitcher that goes 7 every time and gets the win than one that once or twice gets a no hitter or perfect game. Joyce did that kid a favor. he is hungry and will chase that momment for his career and hopefully have a long and succesful one…career that is.

HFS

see MLBTR from 11/06 here and I followed a link from that page to here, the SD paper from 3/05.

That second article should forever be internet-famous due to the following paragraph….

Johnson, in a few aspects, is Pujols’ athletic superior. Fast and powerful, the former greater Memphis prep star earned football and baseball scholarship offers from Mississippi State, then opted for minor league baseball after the Cardinals took him in the fourth round of the 1999 draft. In the 13th round, the Cardinals selected Pujols.

[snip]

When the Padres sought Cardinals prospects in July 2000, in return for catcher Carlos Hernandez, they first requested Pujols, then a third baseman; the Cardinals instead dispatched Johnson, a right fielder.

Yup, that was pretty much my reaction too. OK, this was before the 2005 season, but still….

And as for Jocketty, he deserves the St. Louis Medal of Epic Win for that one….

Our tech with lasers and tracking devices could make the game more fair. I love umps but i would rather see calls be made correctly . unless you want to argue that the umps are athletes as well. if so we should track thier stats and rank thier errors. it would increase thier motivation to get the calls right.

so...some thoughts.

some of the twitterazzi are suggesting that Selig can reverse the call, invoking the “best interests of baseball clause.” i really don’t know how to feel about that. on the one hand, if there was ever a time to do that, its now. on the other hand, as keith law said, might as well submit a list of baseball history to be rewritten. this is tough call. i don’t trust Selig to give this the thought it really deserves.

also…colby’s new contacts are shitty…BOOG IS BACK!…and WTF was up with Carpenter’s AB in the 8th?

Perfect game solution?

Why not just instead of actually reversing the call, just put the game among the “official” perfect games however that happens. It’s the perfect middle of the road, appease nobody solution that Bud Selig would love. 21st perfect game that involved 1 hit. It’d be one of those baseball oddities that Kurkjian’s great grandchildren would “just love” 90 years from now and a helluva trivia question.

Wanna laugh at a team's expense? Let's try the Diamondbacks.

Losers of ten in a row, coming off a nine game road trip in which the following happened:

  • They went 0-9
  • They went from 7.5 games out to 12 games out
  • Their team ERA was over 6.00
  • They were victims of four (4) straight walk-off wins, highlighted by a balk-off loss
  • They totally wasted masterful complete games thrown by Haren and Jackson
  • They have failed to score in the last 31 innings

And it can’t get any worse, right? Oh wait, here are the teams they can look forward to in June:

  • Rockies
  • Braves
  • Cardinals
  • Red Sox
  • Tigers
  • Yankees
  • Rays
  • Cardinals (again)

I can safely say that if I were a D-Backs fan, I would be planning how to burn down Chase Field. It seems like this was a hugely promising franchise about a year ago, now they are a total mess.

their bullpen era is 7.51, gives up 2.16 hr/9, strand 60.9%

and they’re not even that unlucky as their xFIP is 5.29

that’s the worst xFIP amongst team relievers fangraphs shows (back to 2002)

historically awful

so there were almost more perfect games in the last month and a half

than saves by a snake?

“Hello Tony umm… …. I know you don’t want me,
but I refuse to let you go
If I have to beg and plead for your sympathy,
I don’t mind coz’ you mean that much to me
Ain’t too proud to beg, La RUSSA,
Please don’t leave me man, sign me please
Ain’t to proud to plead, TLR-R
Please don’t leave me, man, sign me please

well red reporter hates us
I want the Reds to make Crybaby Carpenter lose his cool.
And someone deserves to get brushed back in the first inning

“how about this guy – picture of rasmus”

Hate…Rasmus…so…much…

I hope they don’t come close to last night’s excitement. I hope that whiny Carpenter gets lit up for 8 runs in the first 2 innings and it’s a laugher.

and this one’s a kicker –

Fuck Edmonds.
His defense was not THAT good. If that asshole was actually FAST he wouldn’t have to dive all the time. Bruce in center = Jim Edmonds.

Yeah I said it.

Fuck Edmonds and the Birds’s slow, shitty outfield.

I agree with you, I’d much rather blow these fucks out than have another exciting win (but I’ll gladly take any kind of W)

seriously wtf? also vivaelpujols was called a douchebag, at least it was followed with irrational hatred

Kinda true though

He was really good but he wasn’t historically great defensively. He was slow for a CFer and his unbelievable reactions and routes made him just as good as a lot of burners.

Problem on dogging Edmonds though is you can’t really find too many CFers who hit 40 bombs.

little early to say that

bruce is very young – he could hit 40 bombs. and he is an elite right fielder, though not edmonds in center. he did come up in center.

he would never play center like edmonds did in a million years

especially if you go back to his angels days. that one catch….

I'll leave this to Lao Tzu

no, he wouldn't

he’d be better than luddy, but no where near edmonds in center. he could definitely be as good a hitter, though – i think he’s just colby’s age.

I think they just meant defensively

“Bruce in center” was the phrase they used.

by mojowo11 on Jun 3, 2010 3:09 AM EDT up reply actions

i don't even know why they are arguing bruce/rasmus in center

when bruce is elite in right and they have a better cf’er than bruce on their own team in stubbs – they should argue that.

nah

bruce would only have a better arm in center

re: Edmonds

whatever.

Guess he wasn’t watching the same games in October that I was….

Quote from Brandon Phillips
"They’re a good team but I feel like we’re better," Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips(notes) said. "This time we just beat ourselves instead of them beating us."

Um no, the Cards beat you, Carpenter beat you. You aren’t the better team, look at the run differential between the two teams.

TLR bulletin board material. See guys? We’re still underdogs!

by nota bene on Jun 3, 2010 3:03 AM EDT up reply actions

maybe he shouldn't say anything

but he’s definitely not going to say the cards are better.

That's a little much for a early season game.

what an idiot

we are better at first, catcher, outfield, and our starting pitching is better. bullpen probably a wash, but I’d argue ours is better too. they are a little better at third, but we have Lopez off the bench to fill in at second and short, boog is better at defense. he’s on crack.

reading the red reporter

we were indeed very fortunate that ball was hit so hard with such topspin that it bounced so high and hit rolen. would’ve been 3-2 with runners on first and third and no outs, and the bullpen would’ve been cranking it up…but oh well, it’s a funny game that can change on the bounce of a ball. of course had they tied it or taken the lead we probably would have gotten to see miles hit, so we were denied that pleasure, but i’ll take the win.
