Twins Fan coming to town
Hi guys. Visitor from TwinkieTown here. My wife and I are closing in on a 3 stadium trip over the course of a week, including Busch, Kaufman, and Coors. We are VERY excited to start our 'lets try to get to all the ballparks' mission.
We will be in your wonderful city on Monday June 28th to catch the Cards vs. The AZ Diamondbacks. Busch is in my top 5 of stadiums I am most looking forward to seeing, so this is going to be AWESOME. Looks beautiful on TV, and I consistently hear that St Louis fans are 'baseball people,' which is excellent. I am looking forward to chatting with the locals during the game. (I will be an honorary Cards fan that night, wearing bright red since I don't really have any Cards merch)
We'll be sitting in right field, up fairly far I think. (It was a 2 stadium trip, and we splurged to add Busch, so we couldn't get expensive seats) I'm wondering of any of you would be willing to offer us out-of-towners some park tips or insights that we may benefit from knowing. Having never been to Busch or St Louis before, we don't want to miss out on some of the neat things you get to know at your local park. So any ideas on great places to watch an inning for a great view, local traditions, or your favorite food recommendations would be very much appreciated. We're staying at the Crown Plaza about 3.5 blocks away. We plan to do the Arch ride the next day also. (Unless you all think that is a waste of time. All I know is I am claustrophobic and afraid of heights, so I'm in for a very uncomfortable 45 minutes..)
Thanks in advance for any thoughts. I promise we'll cheer hard for you guys to beat the D-Backs. And if any of you are ever in the Twin Cities, let me know and I'll give you the rundown on Target Field. Thanks guys!

That is weird.
Apparently I am not the only one doing the pilgrimage this year. By the way, thanks to you guys for helping us break in the new stadium at the end of Spring Training. That was an excellent couple of games.
I always loved that one.
Enjoy the trip!
Since you’ve never been to STL, I’d say yes, do the Arch, for sure (and yeah, if you’re claustrophobic, the tram ride up will be mighty uncomfortable for you…though, at least in my experience, something about the top of the Arch seemed to soften the fear of heights that I once had, I don’t know what), and I’ll second the recommendation of Ted Drewes. I no longer live in the area, so I can’t help you out much with insider stadium knowledge, having only been there twice…but if you end up looking for something else “touristy” to do, I’d suggest either the St. Louis Zoo, or the St. Louis Science Center…both are in Forest Park, both are high quality…and both have free admission.
"But I’m still hungry. I’ve got 10 fingers. There’s one that’s busy and I need nine more."

Make sure to visit the statue of Stan Musial.
This is outside the ballpark on the west side of the stadium. On the northwest corner, outside the team store, there is also a collection of smaller statues commemorating great St. Louis ballplayers. The gates open two hours before the game, so, if you are into attending BP, that’s the time to arrive. If you are documenting with pictures, I would get there early and get a photo from around home plate, with the Arch and old courthouse in the background. It’s a neat picture.
"I'm gonna throw the nastiest curveball I have ever thrown...if he hits it, I'll tip my cap, but if not we're going to the Series."
--Adam Wainwright on the final pitch of the 2006 NLCS
Yes
I would do the Arch, even if it’s uncomfortable for a bit. I don’t care for heights either but it’s not bad at all. The ride up will be a little tough on you but it will be worth it to be able to say you were there. The view is cool.
There is lots of good food in St Louis, especially if you like Italian food…if so, check out Talayna’s or Amaghetti’s (on the hill). My spelling could be wrong.
The City Museum is pretty cool and is right downtown, not too far from the stadium.
The stadium…Busch III as some call it….is, well, ….you tell us, please after you go. I’d like to hear your honest opinion. In general (I think) most folks liked Busch II better. I did.
I think Busch III looks nice on TV but I personally don’t care for the exposed beams and the “tin” type roofing, but that’s just my taste. The field is nice and the seating is good pretty much anywhere unless you are a smoker….the smoking police will lock you in a closet!
Bring $$$ to help pay for Matt Holliday.
2 good pictures to get would be you by the Stan Musial and Jack Buck statues.
Stroll around during the game, see each inning from a different place…try to be in lower to mid left field when Albert is up….just in case he’s hot!
You can’t be in two places at once but try left/center when Colby is up, and 1st or 3rd base side for the bottom of the order. That’s what I’d do.
I guess parking won’t be a problem if you’re staying at the Crown Plaza and walk to the park. Go early.
The fans:
Yes, St Louis fans are pretty smart baseball fans and are, for the most part, polite and friendly, as are most of the general population….but you can find jerks anywhere on the planet.
If you’re talking to a fan age 60 or better, talk about Musial and the Red Head….
age 40-55 tell them that Herzog was the best manager ever…
younger than 40, you’re on your own. Ask any of them which stadium they liked best.
Avoid anybody wearing a Cubs or Mets hat :)
If you see a few ticket stubs on the ground you might want to get a couple so you can write on them…winning and losing pitcher, score, anything else notable.
Side notes:
St. Louis has an embarrassing homeless problem and it’s very evident downtown. It’s sad.
If you venture into South St. Louis, know where you are going, and I wouldn’t go into North St Louis at all, sorry to say.
St Louis really is a great place but you may not get that impression in just a short visit. Most things to do and see aren’t right downtown, with some exceptions.
There is music downtown at night on “the landing” depending on your taste, but as you would anywhere, be aware of your surroundings.
I hope you have a great time at the game and enjoy St Louis.
Report back and let us know…and be honest.
Baseball first, teams second, players third, agents last.
i actually like Busch III better, but that is not really surprising given my age i guess
(didn’t see many “historical moments” there which im sure notches stadiums up a bit) – scratch that i did see Jimmy Edmonds Game 6 homer, but other than that, i’d say i missed out on the old stadium
i think the homeless problem in stl btw is not as bad as other major cities (key word: major) either….. but this is just a guess

Busch III is a much better stadium than Busch II
Only thing Busch II has over Busch III is memories.
Memories and the ability to go to a game for $10
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
you can do that now too
buy standing room only for $7 and go pick your seat and ive been in the absolute highest point for $6 before

what was the post -
someone went to target field and had a pork chop on a stick i believe? maybe this guy would like to read an account of his own stadium by a cards fan…now i’m thinking it may have been milwaukee, not minny…eh, maybe the guy would be interested in knowing where to find a pork chop on a stick though?

it was pork and Colby in one shot. epic.

Yeah
Sorry about that. We have the same thing happen at Twinkie Town. Every few motnhs someone will come to town and we end up posting a lot of the same info. It is a pretty good idea to try and put local favorite recommendations into one place I suppose.
I always loved that one.
Perhaps added to the FAQ?
We could post the recommended sites and such in the FAQ section. If needed I will volunteer to draft it… Just let me know.
Honi soit qui mal y pense.
This is a great resource for St. Louis restaurants:
Ever had gooey butter cake? Stop by Gooey Louie to try it.
Like housemade pasta? Check out Mangia Italiano on Grand. Or pretty much any restaurant on The Hill. I recommend Cunetto’s.
Like local beers and foods? Try the Schlafly Taproom. If you really like beer, do the Anheuser-Busch brewery tour.
Like pubs? Hit up Soulard. McGurk’s and Llywelyn’s are good.
If you want a nice slice of St. Louis city, go to The Royale. Good food, good mixed drinks, good atmosphere.
Give us an idea of what you like and other people will surely chime in with other suggestions.
Regression, bitches.
Wow, this info is fantastic!
Someone asked what kind of food we like; we like to do local only type places, meaning, no chains. Somthing you can only find in a certain place. We’re driving from MSP to StL in one day, so dinner will probably be at the park, and we’ll probably have lunch the next day in town before we head to Kaufman.
Again, thank you guys so much. I’m going to take good notes and try your suggestions!
I always loved that one.
Then yes, you should go to the Hill (the old Italian district)
Take 40 west from downtown. Exit Kingshighway, go south on Kingshighway. Follow the signs down there. Pick a restaurant that looks appealing. You can’t do wrong.
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
I'm guessing you made a similar post at a Royals sports blog, but if not
http://www.arthurbryantsbbq.com/ would be my eating suggestion for KC if you want to try KC’s claim to superb barbeque, and also a stop by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum ( http://www.nlbm.com/ )
an alternative to Arthur Bryant's would be Oklahoma Joe's
Little hole-in-the-wall place with great bbq (Z-Man and a bag of fries!) located in a gas station convenience store.
AB is probably a little better from what i’ve heard tho. I can only attest personally to OK Joes.
"He’s in his own world out there. He says he doesn’t cuss. I disagree." - Skip Schumaker on Jason Motte
Austin Wilson, please don't be a tease!
if you don't feel like driving to the Hill (it's a bit out of the way)...
… a good local Italian place within walking distance of the stadium is Charlie Gitto’s. casual atmosphere, good food but not too pricy (entrees start around $10, but most are $12-16 range), good house wine, they welcome sports fans. i love going there before games, and especially recommend the linguine with clam sauce and the veal parmesan. if you go, ask if Tommy LaSorda’s table is available: it’s his favorite spot downtown, and he has a perpetually reserved table (i.e. if he walks in at any time, whoever is sitting there has to move).
I LOVE osso buco.
Still bitching to contact.

It was so good, I went and had it for
lunch again before I left.
Asshattery: it's an epidemic.
Also, Dave Concepcion.
(sigh)
i wish i had the time and “un-married money”. take me a picture will ya?. haven’t been home since ‘03. at least i made it into tlr’s book. vicariously, of course.
"Red means go!"
Sure thing!
I’ll try and get a post up in the week after we return to share our Busch trip with ya’ll.
I always loved that one.
I think you'll appreciate the City Museum
just drive around it if you don’t have time. I’ve always been curious as to what TC people think of it with all their outdoor art.
a classic photo op is going to Forest Park and taking pictures around Saint Louis (statue, baby) and the Great Basin beneath the Art Museum. for those wanting the postcard look. it’s a little bit of a walk from the Forest Park metrolink, though likely the Hampton bus (southbound) will take you up there. Forest Park itself is an endless list of activities; all of the museum ones are free.

Seconded on Forest park.
In KC for food you’ve gotta go Barbeque at least once.
Arthur Bryants is of course the most famous but there are many other great places. Oklahoma Joe’s is very good but pretty far from downtown KC. Gates barbeque is very good, as is KC Masterpeice. If you’re in the Northland try Smokebox or Smokehouse, both are legit and within a mile of I-29. My one steakhouse suggestion would be the Golden OX, Its down in the stockyards by old Kemper Arena. I’m not 100% sure that it hasn’t moved, but its definately worth a try. Stroud’s is famous for fried chicken and comes with all you can eat potatoes, green beans, and cinnamon rolls.
For attractions the Liberty WWI memorial is great, and within 2 blocks of Union Station.
Great Odin's Raven I love Mike "The Predator" Dixon!

i've still never been to the st louis city museum
not like i ever lived in st louis, but i’ve been to the science center like 4 times
oh and, dude, OP, go to the science center! they have a bridge that goes over the highway that has windows on the floor and it is awesome! or at least it was when i was 12
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
The city museum is great
in fact, it’s a lot of what makes the science center fun, but on a larger scale.
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
I LOVED the city museum
other than the arch, I think it was the only thing I did downtown in StL when I went that I thought was really worth it.

one time
the city got “tricked” into allowing it to be rented out fro what turned out to be a rave. apparenty it was the most amazing rave ever
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
Man, see, thisis the issue with bing in town for 1.5 days.
I wish we could follow up on all of these suggestions, I really do. We’ll have to plan a follow up trip back just to see some of this stuff.
I always loved that one.
I geuss
we couldn’t get you to vote for all the worst AL players on the ballot, could we?
We could use home field advantage.

If youre sitting in right field up high, bring some sunglasses
I was up there last week and for the first few innings the sun is in your eyes. After the game, you will likely see some guy walking around outside the stadium in a Superman outfit posing for pictures…
