Yeah
I know they have to and do talk about the same things, but for some reason Al always sounds so excited when talking about quality starts as opposed to most things. Maybe it’s just me.

Because it's an awful stat
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
How is an RBI an awful stat?
it’s pretty important to drive in runs to win games,
because it also depends on the number of opportunities a guy gets and how well other batters perform ahead of him.
not w-l awful, but not very good
blarg
I'd say overated...
I know it depends on where you hit but I;d say certainly Holliday’s low RBI is a huge failure to help win games since he hit 4th most of the year,
Yeah
But you don’t need to look at RBI to know that. Hitting with RISP if you want to get into that sort of a split would take opportunities out of the equation (and even then that doesn’t really differentiate between the difficulty between the RISP situations). RBI is so dependent on so many other things.
Not afraid to nitpick
not that i'm defending RBI
but hitting with RISP doesn’t help when you’re talking about what ludwick did. he got an RBI on that SAC, and that’s somewhat important, if only because holliday could not do it.
"Did you just grow a mustache?"
"While SPINNING."
Sac flies aren't counted in AB, right?
So presumably, it wouldn’t count in BA with RISP
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
touche
but my point was just that if you only look at BA w RISP, ludwick gets no credit for doing something that was, IMO, fairly significant
"Did you just grow a mustache?"
"While SPINNING."
i would too, normally
but then i saw him pop up to the infield about 75 times with a runner on 3d and less than 2 outs. and then i stopped being so trusting.
"Did you just grow a mustache?"
"While SPINNING."
yeah,
I think BA with RISP isn’t perfect either. You will not drive in a run with a hit with a guy on 2nd every time. An RBI is always a run. Plus doubles with RBIs and multiple people on base will produce more RBI and help you win the game more whereas BA with RISP treats a 3 run HR and a 1 run single the same.
Awful in that it does nothing to explain the actual talent level of a player
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
And contributes nothing to the picture given that we do have much better stuff
Not afraid to nitpick

by vivaelpujols on Jun 16, 2010 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions
does reaching on an error count for your obp
i guess it must, right – it hurts your BA but helps your OBP? i’d like to know what the record is for reaching on an error in a season by a hitter – any guesstimates? i’ll say 15 (since players used real gloves and such), either by somebody who hit the ball really hard all the time or somebody really fast that hurried the infielders.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
aw, a glitch in the system
so you can score a run without being credited with having been on-base – maybe it’s just too time-consuming, who knows.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
That's not true
It just includes lot of unnecessary info. RBI’s are goign to have an incredibly high correlation with wOBA.
It’s relatively worthless you could say.
by vivaelpujols on Jun 16, 2010 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions
RBIs have a high correlation with wOBA because players with a high wOBA are placed in a spot in the lineup to accrue RBI opportunities
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
And because getting hits with runners on base is highly correlated with being a good hitter in general
