Because it's an awful stat

Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'

by mysterui on Jun 16, 2010 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

How is an RBI an awful stat?

it’s pretty important to drive in runs to win games,

by rva on Jun 16, 2010 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd say overated...

I know it depends on where you hit but I;d say certainly Holliday’s low RBI is a huge failure to help win games since he hit 4th most of the year,

by rva on Jun 16, 2010 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

But you don’t need to look at RBI to know that. Hitting with RISP if you want to get into that sort of a split would take opportunities out of the equation (and even then that doesn’t really differentiate between the difficulty between the RISP situations). RBI is so dependent on so many other things.

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Jun 16, 2010 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

not that i'm defending RBI

but hitting with RISP doesn’t help when you’re talking about what ludwick did. he got an RBI on that SAC, and that’s somewhat important, if only because holliday could not do it.

by mysterui on Jun 16, 2010 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

touche

but my point was just that if you only look at BA w RISP, ludwick gets no credit for doing something that was, IMO, fairly significant

"Did you just grow a mustache?"
"While SPINNING."

by IHeartBoog on Jun 16, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

i would too, normally

but then i saw him pop up to the infield about 75 times with a runner on 3d and less than 2 outs. and then i stopped being so trusting.

"Did you just grow a mustache?"
"While SPINNING."

by IHeartBoog on Jun 16, 2010 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah,

I think BA with RISP isn’t perfect either. You will not drive in a run with a hit with a guy on 2nd every time. An RBI is always a run. Plus doubles with RBIs and multiple people on base will produce more RBI and help you win the game more whereas BA with RISP treats a 3 run HR and a 1 run single the same.

i guess it must, right – it hurts your BA but helps your OBP? i’d like to know what the record is for reaching on an error in a season by a hitter – any guesstimates? i’ll say 15 (since players used real gloves and such), either by somebody who hit the ball really hard all the time or somebody really fast that hurried the infielders.
