SB Nation St. Louis Meet-Up
If you'll excuse me some continued advertising: the SB Nation St. Louis meet-up is tomorrow, from six to eight, at Schlafly Tap Room. If you're planning on attending, my SB Nation betters would like you to RSVP via this website, so that they know what, exactly, to plan for.
From VEB Day last year I can offer this as, perhaps, both incentive and warning—talking about UZR and WAR in person, and, more specifically, having to determine how you want to say them out loud, is a little weird but oddly rewarding.

Question
Are they getting a private room for the event? I’ve not previously been to the Tap Room so I’m curious as to what the setup may be like.
Think; It's not illegal yet.
And the possibility of free stuff given out
Like what kind of free stuff and raffles? I can be bribed.

This is awesome.

I really wish I didn’t live over 5 hours away, just to experience this. I did drop WAR as “wahr” on a drunk at the bar a couple of weeks ago when disagreeing with him telling me Ozzie Smith is not a HOFer. How do we pronounce these stat names?

since most people don't know what the hell it is
you could just say wins above replacement level, it’s easier to say than write it out

"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
well
wOBA, i don’t spell out. i just say “weighted on-base average”
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."

That's so much more work! And "woh-bah" is a pretty good-sounding word.
This reminds me of the time my sister, a big Tolkein fan, verbally abbreviated the triology as “L-O-T-R.” I pointed out that it was the same number of syllables to abbreviate it as to just say it, plus it made her sound like a huge nerd. I don’t think that stopped her, though.
I say "WAR" and the word "war" differently
“Wahr” and “wohr,” respectively. I have no idea why.
Luckily, I have a friend who is also saber-friendly, so I’ve got practice saying these things out loud.
“Woh-bah.” “Bah-bip.” “Line drive rate.” “Fihp.”
Do people say “teh-ra” for tERA? I always say “t-e-r-a.”
I’m jealous, I wish I could go. Oh wells.
My "WAR" and "war" are like that, too.

ditto on wahr
and all the above, i think. Have yet to make a decision on “Bah-bip” though – i think i might just say “batting average on balls in play”…
Still bitching to contact.

i am little proud to say
That I did have this conversation with DanUp about UZR and WAR in person

I won't be there because it's a 33-hour drive from my apartment to the Tap Room
But someone had better take pictures and post them on VEB so I can see what all you crazy people actually look like.
then there's VEB a couple days after this
crazay!

i could drive
not sure how i would explain it to my boss
“hey, bossy mcbosserson. i can’t work my shift on saturday because i have to drive to st louis to meet up with some people from a baseball blog so we can talk about advanced metrics and regresssion”
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
just tell him that it is very important and that it's a pressing matter
you are meeting up with advanced baseball experts in order to save the game, so it is a bit of a priority.
which would not work very well at all if bossy doesn’t like baseball

Interesting.
Hope it works, and if so, hope it lasts for more than a few games.
>Pitcher Change: Felipe Lopez replaces Ryan Franklin, batting 7th, replacing third baseman Felipe Lopez
Hooray!
Holliday in the two spot! Luddy behind Albert! Lopez in the leadoff spot!
I like this a lot — I prefer Rasmus down in the order a bit. His speed in front of Molina is good.
Here’s hoping it works in the short term, prompting TLR to stick with it.
we're bound to score 10 runs
and never see this exact lineup again
I am pleasantly pleased, thankyouverymuch
wow, perfect!
loving this lineup, tony…

If it is, I’m very pleased.

I think it's more about just meeting up and hanging out

i’ve been working on these pitch f/x poster boards for weeks!
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
I might...
depends on what happens at work tomorrow.
I am “in” for VEB Day though. That “Decision Time” thread looks like we have several confirmed folks. Should be a good time.
we got a section in the bleachers

I'm jealous.
I would go but to attend, I would have to take a couple of planes, a taxi ride and book a hotel room. Out of my price tag…
I want the Walrus back...
Which day is VEB day?
Also, where and when are you all meeting up beforehand? I probably won’t make it to the game, but if you’re all hanging out in town I’d like to come say hello.
I'm one of those "I don't care how you killed the cow; just serve me a great steak" guys. If the results are logical and easy to understand, I'm pouring some A1 sauce on that formula and eating it. UZR qualifies. -Bill Simmons
Saturday 6/19 is VEB day
There’s a fanpost to decide where we’re going to meet at.
Think; It's not illegal yet.
