OT: The STL Men's Roller Derby Team - Stl Gatekeepers

is at the biggest Men’s tournament (since it became a real sport vs planned…a big 6 teams lol). I’m at work with a Torn Hip Adductor :(

After trailing most the match, STL Gatekeepers 49, Twin City Terrors 35. 8:40am CT STL takes on heavily tournament favored Dallas Deception.

Tonight in STL (south county) the Smashinistas take on the m80s. Winner most likely decides who’s going to the championship. I’ll be there reffing, then getting real shitty at the after party…then getting more shitty at the after after party…..I’ve never made it to the 3rd after party….those bia’s be crazy.

That whole thing was hilarious.

I wish I had the time to actually think about something like that….

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

thanks for the clarification

now i suspect the next crazy thing will be the lead runner being tug, the fielder flipping the ball to the pitcher, and the lead runner bolting for and achieving home with no one paying attention, and the trailing runner still standing safely on third.

or, it could also happen with two outs, the team runs off the field, maybe even flipping the ball into the stands, and both runners score.

Still running a 57% groundball rate and a 2 BB/9 ratio. His strikeouts are actually up from last year. A lot more balls are leaving the yard and on top of that his BABIP is high.

stat check

Cards bullpen is….

6th in ERA in the majors (not too shabby)
12th in WHIP
.287 BABIP
9th in walks per 9
20th in FIP though

Starters are first in FIP in the majors, 2nd in ERA to the Rays
3rd in K/BB, 2nd in xFIP to the Cubs (who lead in K/BB)
2nd in WHIP to the Giants
1st in WAR

9th in WAR for batters
10th in dingers
2nd in swing %
5th to last in contact %

David Freese has the highest BA at .344, then Pujols and Yadi are tied for 2nd w/.313
Rasmus leads the team in wOBA, then Pujols, then Freese
Rasmus is among the ml leaders in ISO
Pujols is 5th in the majors in rbis

Jaime Garcia is 3rd in the majors in ERA, and wagonmaker and penny are also under 2 ERA
Waino leads the team in FIP, 7th in the majors
Carp leads the team in xFIP, 5th in the majors
Wainwright .87 WHIP is 3rd in the majors
Brad Penny has the highest WPA on the team, and leaves the most runners on base
Wainwright is 4th in WAR behind only Halladay, Lincecum, and Jiminez

Ok, so I'm somewhat of a BABIP noob, but

The Cards are 14th in the majors in batting average (.262)
yet they are 8th in the majors in BABIP (.312)

If I understand BABIP correctly, doesn’t this mean that we should see EVEN MORE regression. It seems to me like the cards have been hitting balls hard right at fielders constantly. Someone like to shed some light on this? Is the BABIP high because they’re actually getting lucky, or is it elevated because of the # of HRs (10th in ML)?

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on May 8, 2010 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I think you have to look at BABIP more independently

where its at right now is about what’s normally average, so over the course of the season you won’t see much regression there, could even see a little upwards regression but I wouldn’t count on it. The reason our BA is so low in comparison, I would guess, is a lot of of strikeouts

by mattyp on May 8, 2010 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

HRs don't figure into BABIP

and we are 5th in MLB in strikeouts, which will depress the batting average for a given BABIP.

Anyway, to know if BABIP has been lucky or unlucky you have to look at the distribution of balls in play. If a team hit all infield flies, BABIP would be close to 0, and if a team hit all line drives it should be close to .700.

We’re second in MLB in LD%, FWIW, although there’s a margin for error there since the definition of a line drive is somewhat arbitrary.

Another thing that affects BABIP slightly is infield/bunt hits. BABIP on bunts is usually above .400, and we don’t bunt for hits much (only 3 tries so far this year, all unsuccessful), so our BABIP will be a little lower than teams who do.

Meh, it's worth the 7 bucks or so.

At it’s worst, it’s basically Transformers 2 with humor.

"I hope I'll be safe at home!"

appropriate, or gimmick

Fox is letting a half inning go silent (no Buck, McCarver) in honor of Ernie H.
I vote thumbs up. In fact I wish they would do more of that for any reason at all.
God bless Ernie.

by the Tewk on May 8, 2010 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

Was it Fox, or NBC that did that in a NFL game?

I don’t remember what year it was, maybe 2008, but the announcers were silent for a quarter, just had the field noise with the PA as the only “commentary”. It was pretty neat, but I don’t know if I’d like it all the time. Of course, when the option is listening to McCarver, I might change my mind.

by ArkansasTravs on May 8, 2010 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

FOX did something

similar on a Saturday Game of the Week 10 or so years ago. They broadcast each successive inning in the way that it would have been broadcast in a particular time period. It started with B/W, no commentary, only one camera, and progressed to some commentary, with 3 camera angles. When they got to the 70s and 80s style the player name screen overlays looked like they did in that time period. It was a pretty cool idea.

yeah, I wouldn't like it silent all the time

(unless its McCarver) but it seems announcers today have really forgotten the value of silence. So many try to fill up every second with the sound of their voice just because. Look at Al – he’s constantly saying something idiotic or irrelevant because he’s straining for anything at all to fill up the silence. Someone needs to tell him its not necessary. A little interspersed silence can be a very good thing, especially when the game can be 3 or 4 hours long, or in the case of the Mets game, like 12.

here's the thing

strasburg deserves every ounce of hype. he’s remarkable. 3 plus plus pitches, great velocity and life, and so on and so forth. his floor is justin verlander, imo.

if the nats get zimmerman back healthy, the top 3 of that rotation will be quite quality in strasburg, jzimm(yeah, UW System school!), and lannan.

a day late, but i still think this is a great post

Cardinal70 had a good post about how our SF/PHI series… that its not near as bad as the results came out to be

now i don’t necessarily agree with some of his points, but the point that we’ve tied for the most baserunners as any other team against Halladay (SF was the other and they won) for instance, is promising because he is the best pitcher in the league, and normally 10 baserunners equals more than just 2 runs

he also makes a point about how bad hitting shouldn’t be completely blamed since we faced some top pitchers….

OT: dumb question about MLB

when I “watch highlight” of a given game (from the ‘scoreboard’ section on the MLB site), how do I stop it from flitting around to vid bits of OTHER games, when it goes thru the sequence. Sometimes it stays on the game you clicked on and sometimes it doesn’t.

by the Tewk on May 8, 2010 5:19 PM EDT reply actions

in the tags for the video there is a tag

that says “more from this game”
Click on that and you get a page with all the highlights.
I just open all the individual highlights in another tab.
Other than that, I don’t know how to get them to play continuously

starlin castro beat jason heyward to the HOF:

“On Saturday, he may have to borrow a uniform. The lineup card, Castro’s hat and his jersey were authenticated after the game and are expected to go to the Hall of Fame. But clubhouse manager Tim Hellman didn’t bring that many extras on the road trip, so Castro might have to borrow someone’s jersey.”

in setting this record, castro already has twice as many rbi’s as ichiro on the season.

I enjoy watching baseball players have fun. I went to the Sox/Rays game last week. Evan Longoria was taking IF practice and you could tell he was just having a ball (in fact he threw me one). Yadi always has a big smile on his face when he drives in a run or gets a hit or steals a base.
Conversely, I can’t stand players like Youk who just look like they are angry all the time.
