All hail the great and powerful Wiki-

In 1948, Ernie Harwell became the only announcer in baseball history to be traded for a player when the Brooklyn Dodgers’ general manager, Branch Rickey, traded catcher Cliff Dapper to the Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association in exchange for breaking Harwell’s broadcasting contract. (Harwell was brought to Brooklyn to substitute for regular Dodger announcer Red Barber, who was hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer.)

The point is that you can't tell where the pitch was based on the camera angle

Gameday says it was at the knees, and I have no reason to doubt Gameday, which is completely objective system.

It’s possible that there was something wrong with the Gameday system for that game or that inning, but I don’t know what it is. Were there any other pitches that seemed way different from their GameDay location?

by vivaelpujols on May 5, 2010 4:40 AM EDT up reply actions

no idea

i watched the game, so don’t really know what gameday was saying. the ump seemed to be a bit pro-batter, or anti-pitcher, though, so it was really wise not to be swinging at first pitches – boog not the only culprit there, because albert did it. that’s my main point, because then he could’ve afforded to take the second if the first was called a ball, and to be honest, re-watching it, i just see no way any of them could be classified as strikes. i’ll always defer to gameday on close pitches, because of my inherent bias toward the cards, but i didn’t think those were even close enough to warrant double-checking myself. to my recollection, i’ve never seen those pitches called strikes. lidge was certainly filthy, but it seems impossible that so-called “late-break” all happened between the front of the plate and the catcher’s mitt, which seems to be what gameday is saying if it’s calling them strikes.

anyway, my anti-jinxing by berating of boog is not working. it worked with colby but i’ll have to try another tactic with my man boog.

fun fact: trivia question on phils broadcast: what contemporary of willie mays and hank aaron led them both in career BA, OBP, and SLG?
THE MAN

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on May 5, 2010 5:22 AM EDT up reply actions

ok, i just re-watched the at-bat again

the first pitch looked low to the naked eye, and the catcher’s mitt touched the ground when he caught it. the second pitch the catcher back-handed low and away, not even close. and the third was very similar to the first, but this time they showed a side view, and it was 4-5 inches below the bottom of his kneecap, which i’m just guessing a side view of the first would have shown as well, due to their similarity.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on May 5, 2010 6:02 AM EDT up reply actions

when it crossed his kneecap

the philly broadcast showed a slow-mo side view, i suppose to demonstrate what their announcers said, which was that the third pitch was a little closer to being a strike than the other two. now, as you previously stated, perhaps 20% of the time that pitch has been called a strike historically, but that seems a little high to me – even bad umps must do better than that.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on May 5, 2010 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm just saying what the data tell us

It tells us that pitches with similar velocity, movement and location thrown from a RHP to a RHH on a 0-0 count were called a strike around 20% of the time.

but I would have tried to screw the other dude out of at least one more player. Depending on what stats your fantasy league uses of course. Austin Jackson has been working out for Detroit and Lindstrom has been pretty good as closer for the Marlins.

I would cancel the trade and add another player to your side.

that would be a terrible trade in real life

but fantasy purposes, Jackson will be declining if not useless for the rest of the year while Lidstrom won’t be getting as many save oppurtunities as he has on the Astros (I also have Wagner, Brian Wilson, Neftali Perez/Frank Fransico)…..

whereas Harden will give me K’s… lots of them…

in my mind at the least, Jackson will be worthless once i have jacoby and having four relievers is stupid with three relieving slots…

They are showing the bottom of the 8th now, Boogs AB is in the next half inning so stay tuned.

yeah, i dont care about the argument anymore. My opinion that Boog failed HARD still stands. He didnt make contact with 3 straight sliders low in the zone when his assignment was to hit a fly ball and AT LEAST make contact.

LOL @ your incovenient facts, try reading comprehension, friend.

My argument was that Boog failed to recognize 3 straight sliders low in the zone in a flyball situation. VEP suggested that most people swing at his sliders out of the zone, which the final statistic he provided was roughly 37% or basically 1/3 did and that over 60% swing at another out of the zone. Sure thats relevant in a situation where a batter is normally placed in, but not in this one.

Boog swung at 3 straight pitches out of the zone (recognizably out of the zone and situationally [umpiring standard] would have been called ball 1, 2, 3). VEP then suggested that they would have been called strikes 20% of the time when we all know they would have been called strikes 0% of the time (1-5% margin of error). And instead of using common sense to rationalizing his argument, he used statistics that were irrelevant to the actual at-bat because as noted by me, MooCow, Stlcardsfan4 AND Cardball were all out of the zone.

So dont come in here and try to support your friends argument when its very clear you didnt read through ours.

Conclusion:
There is no rational way to support Boog’s AB or why he swung at those pitches. He failed to make contact in a situation when hes looking for a pitch up in the zone to induce a fly ball. And dont give me that ‘Those were nasty pitches’ routine because sure they might have been but they were all easily going to be called Balls if they were taken.

Boog failed, we lost because of it. Wainwright gets a no-decision. End of story.

no, no i read the entire thread

trust me, it kept me off VEB for the night.

unfortunately throughout that entire summary, the way you couched your argument wasn’t exactly conducive to a good argument. and yet, you keep doing it. VEP brings stats that support his claim and warrant a least a modicum of discussion, whereas you rely “WELP WE ALL SAW THEY WERE BALLS.” of course, this argument is premised on everyone agreeing with you to disregard objective analysis, such as GD or strike% values. I’m not going to do that.

I saw the pitches too, and Boog had a terrible approach, terrible swings, and what have you. It probably cost us the game, and it was irrational, but the way you disregard points of common consensus just to be a contrarian for the sake of being a contrarian is really bothersome. it really hampers the discourse of VEB to just make those assumptions then antagonize everyone in doing so. but that might just be me.

at this point, i think it’s probably best to drop this entire argument, but i think that it’s important to realize that not everyone agrees with you, and those discussions can be borne out. but not when you’re an asshole.

I was antagonizing him only because he snapped at another VEB member.

And the only person I antagonized was VEP. And if VEP can’t let someone argue their point without telling them to shut up, then he deserves to be antagonized and be talked to in a sarcastic manner.

And I went back and looked at Brendan’s AB according to Gameday, and Gameday was clearly wrong in this instance. But that is personal opinion. At some point, you have to realize that a slider that almost needs to be scooped out of the dirt is not going to be a borderline pitch. Again, personal opinion. Believe what you want.

But face it. (I said butt face, hehe)

There is no way either of us will convince the other side their argument is wrong because we won’t be able to agree on GD’s judgment.

And of course not everyone agrees with me. That is why its called an argument. /facepalm

Wrong.

/zing

But no, according to you guys its an automated system that use cameras to pin point exactly where a pitch crosses the plate.

In this instance, I dont believe it. Especially the pitch he struck out on finished maybe a half inch off the ground. So maybe the cameras weren’t adjusted correctly. All I know is that those werent weren’t on the corners like GD says it was.

"So do you like 'Little Women'?"

by The_teague on May 5, 2010 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Gameday is made up of 4 cameras that take about 25 pictures of the ball as it's coming into the plate

If it is calibrated correctly, it’s accurate to a half an inch.

Why don’t you look at other pitches from the game and see how GameDay’s location compared to what you see. Choose fastballs so theirs no movement fucking it up.

If you can show me that GameDay was miscalibrated for that game, than you are right about Ryan. If not, than seriously shut up, because this is a blog for evidenced based discussion. If you want to argue based on a baseless opinon, go to the PD Boards.

i assume gameday

adjusts for each individual batter, so that the zone for a 6’6" guy is not the same as for a 5’8" guy. my only explanation on boog’s at-bat, if gameday had those pitches near enough to the bottom of the zone to be called strikes 20% of the time, is that it was still set on schu’s parameters, and maybe schu’s knees are 4-5 inches closer to the ground than boog’s – i don’t know how exactly it works, but if something like that did not happen, then i will have to re-think my opinion on its accuracy (when in doubt, i’ve generally deferred to gameday). now, colby batted between them, but he was intentionally walked, so unfortunately we can’t look at anything there.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

I'm not talking about the gameday zone

I’m talking about the Pitch f/x
attributes, which are the exact measurements of the pitch relative to the plate, not some imaginary zone.

by vivaelpujols on May 5, 2010 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't know then, vep

i’m not trying to be stubborn. it’s entirely possible the ump could have called one of those pitches a strike, but i just can’t see how any of them could objectively be classified as such by a computer. on this one i have to trust my own eyes – the slo-mo side view of the ball below boog’s kneecap as he swung was pretty conclusive to me, and that’s before the ball even reached the front of the plate.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

if you have mlb.tv then watch the archived philly broadcast. you can jump to inning, and they have a slo-mo side view of the last pitch. i thought the head of boog’s bat was going to hit the ground when he went down for that pitch.

you have to account for injury time and the crazy wrist surgeries. it’s a miracle he’s playing, much less making the squad. that’s going to severely limit power, IIRC.

stuff out of the odds and ends at mlbtr
  1. MASN’s Ben Goessling says Nats 2006 first-round pick Colton Willems has decided to retire. The team has the pitcher on the restricted list in case he changes his mind.
  2. The Royals granted reliever Roman Colon his release so he can sign with the Kia Tigers of Korea, according to the team. Just three months ago, Colon and Juan Cruz were in the mix to be Joakim Soria’s primary setup man. The Royals’ bullpen sports an AL-worst 5.56 ERA in 81 innings.
  3. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets that the Blue Jays attempted to sign Kelly Johnson to play left field during the offseason, offering more than the $2.35MM Johnson received from Arizona. Johnson told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic in March that he strongly considered offers from the Blue Jays, Pirates, and Indians.
  4. Joel Sherman of the New York Post points out that the upon acquiring Javier Vazquez, the Yankees considered two 2011 draft picks part of the deal. Already, Vazquez’s Type A status and arbitration offer are in question.

fun fact:

8: The number of intentional walks Albert Pujols has been issued, more than every other team in baseball other than the Dodgers, who have nine — three of them to eighth-place hitters Jamey Carroll and Russell Martin, to bring the pitcher to bat. Pujols is on pace for 50 IBB, which would be the most since Barry Bonds set an all-time record with 120 in 2004. (Bonds received his eighth free pass of that season on April 23, a twelve-inning game in which the Dodgers intentionally walked him four times.)

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

Here's my blatantly obvious bullpen observation...

Our bullpen has been very successful and has a chance to continue to be very successful, IF they are working ahead in the count.

Consider, if you will, that most relief pitchers are 2-pitch pitchers. The majority of the righties in the Cardinal ’pen all have 3 “plus” pitches.

But, when they pitch from behind in the count, they are forced to throw the fastball and the ability to mix up pitches is gone. That’s what happened to Hawksworth last night on that game-ending HR.

Again, blatantly obvious, but worth mentioning because we have a special group in the bullpen that can keep hitters guessing, IF they throw strikes.

they need to ban first-pitch swings until everyone not named Freese rev it up.

ooooh Bernie just pointed out that Mac took a shot at the hitters via Hrabosky

that they’re too dependent on video
they’re guess-hitters
and they won’t make adjustments in the game

and here I thought it was all old-Al ramblings. that was Big Mac who called it.

I'm sure Al put his unique spin on it.

There are certain hitters that will swing at the same junk all night though.

It’s painfully predictable, at times.

In Seattle.

Colby couldn’t go because he was getting his haircut.

And Joe Morgan kept checking the box scores on his iPhone to see how Big Z was doing.

This.

There are certain hitters (Pujols, Molina) that will make adjustments and understand what a pitcher is trying to do to them within each at bat.

Others look like they are up there with a blindfold on.

I refuse to read articles about McGwire + Selig at this point.

It’s just so painfully easy to write an article and get people on your side with this issue… akin to U.S. Senators yelling at a random Goldman Sachs employee to deflect attention from themselves… Lazy writing.
