athleticism is a set of skills allowing you to play a sport

if you play it well, you have good or even great athleticism. if you play poorly, you probably need to quit and are not really an athlete. if you play at league average or better, you’re athleticism is adequate. no need to be a cross training athlete or whatever, since this would be a bit of a novelty.

also, athleticism is not entirely physical. it incorporates muscle memory and other mental skills, which has lead some to write articles on whether or not an athlete is a genius, because their brain is extra adapted or evolved to execute hand eye coordination, quick reflexes, and specified skills that other people cannot do. so athleticism has more to do with an evolved set of motor skills and reflexes mixed with years of learned muscle memory programming through repeated tasks.

/my two cents

I'll leave this to Lao Tzu

by Cards Fan in Chitown on May 31, 2010 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting note on the mental aspect of athleticism. Still, I worked as a sports writer for a spell, and I was astounded by the depth of the shallowness of some of the players I interviewed.

They looked upon thought they way vampires look upon crosses. As an aside, the brotherhood of oysters tended to have short careers.

I once led a profile with, " ______ can do anything with a basketball but autograph it." The lead was spiked. . .

I believe they were challenging the idea of genius

and that it could be a brain evolved or specialized in quick thought and execution of tasks through the body… I like to think of martial arts as an example. you need to be pure of mind perhaps even moreso than pure of body. also, it is more important that you train in whatever skill you want to excel at to match your raw talent. this could be someone that doesn’t “look” athletic, is all I was saying. sure, there are some that are cross training and are working on a more broad skillset, but I do think that this wide variety of skills could lead away from specialization.

I'll leave this to Lao Tzu

by Cards Fan in Chitown on May 31, 2010 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't think it matters at all how you look

sandoval is much more athletic than almost anyone who looks like him. you cannot judge athleticism by looks alone – it is a good indicator, but is not the be-all, end-all of the discussion.

And I think that a pitcher like Pedro is more likely to be productive in the long future than a pitcher like Jimenez

Pedro had much better command and breaking stuff, so he’s able maintain great numbers if he loses velocity. Jimenez does not have good command and has to rely on batter’s not being able to touch his 97 MPH fastball with sick movement. Most pitchers will lose a lot of velocity in their careers, and Jimenez will be hurt much more by losing velocity than a guy like Pedro (in Lincecum, as we see this year).

by vivaelpujols on Jun 1, 2010 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Lincecum has been a lot more about command than velo this year

But yeah, at this point if he drops more to 86-92 instead of his now 88-94, it’s gonna be awfully tough to dominate.

Sure ERA is important

It’s just very unstable. A difference of .5 runs of ERA (which is what Lincecum is experiencing this year) is NOT significant, because ERA has many factors outside the pitchers control.

It’s especially not significant when you look at his FIP and xFIP, which are below his career averages.

he is working on changing his motion/mechanics

i brought this up today, because i wonder what his father thinks. ubaldo will, like pedro, develop whatever he needs to continue to dominate. he’s that kind of talent, imo. pedro continued to develop, as did michael jordan. i think ubaldo will too. that is why when pedro lost velocity he could still dominate. and i also think ubaldo has more command than you assert.

Yes

There is no denying that Jimenez has been outstanding this year, and his stuff has been incredible. He’s averaging around 97 MPH with his fastball, which is just ridiculous.

But no one can sustain averaging 97 for that long just due to injury. I can say with high confidence that Jimenez will be sitting at around 94-95 in a couple of years, if he is lucky. and Jiminez throwing 94-95 is not a sub 1 ERA pitcher, but rather a 3.5-4 ERA pitcher.

by vivaelpujols on Jun 1, 2010 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

At least not nearly at the rate that stuff declines. Jimenez has consistently been below average at throwing strikes. The only reason his walk rate has gone down is that batters are swinging at more pitches out of the strike zone because of the quality of his stuff.

to me it's just tough to look at numbers

in a vacuum. i don’t know if he’s walking the opposing pitcher, or pujols, or in what situations. it gives you a general overview, but to take it without context, without watching the games, can be tomfoolery, if you will. are those bb’s every other inning, or 3 in one inning – this is a “personality” trait that is overlooked. was he walking guys with a 4-run lead, or in scoreless games and being careful with a certain hitter – especially in coors – is that no longer a factor?

i always watch his performances, usually not live but on archive. i’ve seen every one of his games this year. he’s not on my team, and it’s sensitive here on that, so i try not to bring it up too much (i’ve even tried to avoid the ely talk now), but if anyone can say he’s not the first pitcher you would take in an open draft to start a team, then i don’t know what to say. who would be desirable above him – strasburg?

Are we talking pure talent or age and contract status also?

I would take Halladay above Jimenez, Greinke too. I would put Josh Johnson and Verlander and Wainwright on a similar level.

just talking right now

as things stand talent- and age-wise. if you could have any of those pitchers for the next 10 years at the same price, who would you take? greinke would be my second choice, though barely over josh johnson.

Guys who strikeout a lot and hit for a lot of power will tend to have a higher BABIP than normal because when they put the ball in play, they put it in play hard

I’ll bet you 100 ebucks it will be closer to .330 than to .300.

Besides, even if his BABIP regresses he’s still a .350 wOBA hitter (wOBAr) and that’s assuming no drop in his strikeout rate. A .350 wOBA hitter with plus defense in center is awesome.

Why is putting the ball in play important?

7 years isn't what I'd call that brief

Besides, Jimenez doesn’t have nearly the control or deception that Pedro had. If he loses 3 MPH on his fastball (which is likely to happen) he becomes a not that great pitcher.

by vivaelpujols on May 31, 2010 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

it is brief in comparison to 15 years

the point was physically keeping it up, and i think ubaldo is much more equipped than pedro to do that.

right

and nolan ryan a little more, right? of course we are talking different frames, etc, which is my point with ubaldo. he has a chance to be otherworldly as far as dominance at an age beyond 32, 33. as i said, pedro is my favorite pitcher ever, but i had no expectation of him at 37 still dominating – ubaldo i can see doing that.

I could easily see Wainwright being better than Jimenez for longer

He doesn’t need to maintain a 95+ MPH fastball for him to be successful. If Jimenez gets injured and loses 2-3 MPH on his fastball, that will hurt him a lot.

i guess i could say that about a lot of guys

but i don’t, and am not. i’m saying ubaldo is the long-term cream of the crop, rightly or wrongly. i really don’t pay that much attention to the numbers at this point – they can be blinding – but rather just watch the performances and comment accordingly. if i’m in a rough spot with my thinking i’ll look at some select numbers, but otherwise i’m pretty comfortable with my eye-ball assessment, especially if i have any “background information” about a guy.

i’m merely judging talent/performance by eye-ball, i admit. i’ve missed on guys that haven’t made it to mlb, but very rarely once they get there – oliver perez after his first few outings with the pirates a notable exception. but i think ubaldo is out of that range at this point, and it is now a determination of just how dominant and for how long it will be.

if he isn't better than he was last year at the end of this season, I may mull over him being an overhyped prospect

He's already improved upon last season.

I’m not saying he’s going to finish the season with nearly a .900 OPS but it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

He’s been slumping something fierce, and his OPS is still nearly .900. LINK

Obviously this season is only 1/3 over, so there’s plenty of time for these numbers to get worse or get even better. It’s not like he was hyped like Strasburg or Heyward.

people tend to complain a lot about strikeouts. as long as his slugging is that high and his OBP is nearly .400, we have nothing to complain about, even if he can be a little sloppy fundamentally. I think he’ll improve actually… I don’t see him K’ing this much over the course of the season

crap...

his OBP won’t be very high if he keeps striking out though, his BABIP will regress to the mean of around .300.
just look his Babip is .369(before today) and he’s hitting only .262 when it drops his BA will drop and so will his OBP. He’ll need to keep his BB rate up and .Iso high if he wants to continue being a high OPS guy. And most importantly put the damn ball in play

If he plays the rest of the season like May, his season-ending numbers will probably fall below last year’s, and Chitown will have a point. so you're saying they're enforced the same way every time in every country?

the quote was basically that there are so many rules and situations, no one sits down with these guys and explains everything thoroughly. I think the trigger situation was Yadi — it’s immaterial where they play now.

in any case, I floated that as a possibility, since no one is clarifying which Vazquez did it so I can open my last tab and find his actual background.

yes, but how many times do you actually encounter a balk situation

that’s what I mean. it’s a complex rule. it’s not just “don’t do this one thing.” it doesn’t matter to my point whether the balk rules are uniform. it matters whether they are uniformly taught.

here in arizona

it’s like the announcers are being proactive to try to stem the “get rid of AJ” wave, yet the wave hasn’t rushed in yet. the team is bad — fundamentally bad as well as devoid of any big-time talent. i’m not sure whether the D-backs fan base is (1) apethetic or (2) so savvy that they understand it’s not AJ’s fault.

they need Upton to wake up and hopefully he is better than what he has been playing

I still like Reynolds a lot. Kelly Johnson has been hitting very well. but yeah, it had to be a major setback when Webb is not ready yet. Haren isn’t quite himself either. they have some potential, but they are not playing well. very bad bullpen always destroys a team’s morale too.
