which is a pisser, because apparently tony didn’t want any more runs again. then, instead of with bases juiced, they let craig bat against a freak lefty with a screwball, something he’s probably not exactly used to.

Seems like it
9 vs PIT, 6 left
6 vs HOU, 9 left
>Pitcher Change: Felipe Lopez replaces Ryan Franklin, batting 7th, replacing third baseman Felipe Lopez
I went and checked.
They’re a total of 13-5 against Houston, Pittsburgh and Milwaukee. And that includes getting swept by Pittsburgh in April. Their schedule has been absolutely weak lately, with their last seven series coming against the Pirates (twice!), Astros, Brewers, Indians, Braves and Cards.

1-5 vs PIT
5-1 vs MIL
1-2 vs HOU

the cardinals are 18-13 vs teams who currently have records .500 or better, 12-9 against losing teams.

if you’re just talking about brute strength, Mo Vaughan had it in spades. Does that make him an athlete?

no, not to me or the jays announcers
but to chitown he’s athletic because he’s an athlete by dint of the fact he plays a sport. same with any bowler.

athleticism is a set of skills allowing you to play a sport
if you play it well, you have good or even great athleticism. if you play poorly, you probably need to quit and are not really an athlete. if you play at league average or better, you’re athleticism is adequate. no need to be a cross training athlete or whatever, since this would be a bit of a novelty.
also, athleticism is not entirely physical. it incorporates muscle memory and other mental skills, which has lead some to write articles on whether or not an athlete is a genius, because their brain is extra adapted or evolved to execute hand eye coordination, quick reflexes, and specified skills that other people cannot do. so athleticism has more to do with an evolved set of motor skills and reflexes mixed with years of learned muscle memory programming through repeated tasks.
/my two cents

Interesting note on the mental aspect of athleticism. Still, I worked as a sports writer for a spell, and I was astounded by the depth of the shallowness of some of the players I interviewed.
They looked upon thought they way vampires look upon crosses. As an aside, the brotherhood of oysters tended to have short careers.

I believe they were challenging the idea of genius
and that it could be a brain evolved or specialized in quick thought and execution of tasks through the body… I like to think of martial arts as an example. you need to be pure of mind perhaps even moreso than pure of body. also, it is more important that you train in whatever skill you want to excel at to match your raw talent. this could be someone that doesn’t “look” athletic, is all I was saying. sure, there are some that are cross training and are working on a more broad skillset, but I do think that this wide variety of skills could lead away from specialization.

some "sports" require no quick reflexes
golf, bowling, billiards…
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
they do require muscle memory and practice
as I said before, this is all contingent on which sport we are talking about, what position the athlete is playing, etc.

dude reminded me of pedro from day 1 out of the pen, but he has a better frame and work ethic, so i think he’ll be around in top form awhile.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
yeah he's about 6 inches taller than pedro, there's a good chance he'll hold up better than pedro ever did
he probably ran 5 miles afterward instead of 6
dude knows how to use his legs when pitching. waino typically throws that many, and ubaldo is fitter, i’d say.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
does 1997-2003 not count as "awhile"?
ubaldo’s peripherals are sub-carpenter; pedro struck out 11 and walked two per nine innings while allowing 0.6 home runs per nine in some of the most inflated offensive years of all time for seven years (ERA+ 213.)
pedro is the greatest pitcher ever, imo
but it was “brief”, as you note, and i think ubaldo can go well into his 30’s with his dominance. i doubt there is a bigger fan of pedro here than i.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
was he dominant in his 30's?
perhaps i missed something – notice i put quotes around brief? i’m talking nolan ryan material here.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
right
and nolan ryan wasn’t, and i’m thinking ubaldo of that ilk. hell, otherwise as good as pedro once was, he would’ve won 300 too.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
yes, i believe you and others are missing the point
or just being blindly difficult. ubaldo is a physical specimen unlike pedro, and i like his chances of longer dominance better. i am not comparing ubaldo to ryan – we are discussing pedro vs. ubaldo physically going forward.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
And I think that a pitcher like Pedro is more likely to be productive in the long future than a pitcher like Jimenez
Pedro had much better command and breaking stuff, so he’s able maintain great numbers if he loses velocity. Jimenez does not have good command and has to rely on batter’s not being able to touch his 97 MPH fastball with sick movement. Most pitchers will lose a lot of velocity in their careers, and Jimenez will be hurt much more by losing velocity than a guy like Pedro (in Lincecum, as we see this year).
by vivaelpujols on Jun 1, 2010 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions
Lincecum has been a lot more about command than velo this year
But yeah, at this point if he drops more to 86-92 instead of his now 88-94, it’s gonna be awfully tough to dominate.
Not afraid to nitpick
My point was that Lincecum has already lost 3 MPH on his fastball since he debuted, but his performance hasn't dropped at all
Because he has such good command and deception. Jimenez is not that type of pitcher.

with a stride that is 120% of his height when he goes he will go fast
Stats are like a girl in a bikini, both would agree that Joe Morgan is an idiot
do you think that Lincecum will fall off a cliff or decline slowly?
Stats are like a girl in a bikini, both would agree that Joe Morgan is an idiot
Decline slowly
Because he’s already gone through the major hurdle that all pitchers go throw (loss in velocity) and has come out the other side untouched.
this year hasn't been stellar
really good, but not that upper echelon stuff.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
He has a 2.65 FIP and a 2.95 xFIP, both under his career averages
He’s striking out batters at a career rate (although only slightly more than last year). The only stat that’s worse for him is ERA, and we all know that’s a pretty unstable stat. A difference of .5 points of ERA (this year compared to last) is not very signficant, espcially when you look at the other stats.
he also walked four and looked
really hittable by his standards
Stats are like a girl in a bikini, both would agree that Joe Morgan is an idiot
he has in his last couple maybe it is a glitch
maybe a trend how many bad starts before it is an issue?

last 4, tomcat
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
how do they compare to last year?
all i know is his era is over 3 and he has walked 5 or more in his last 4 starts, and baserunners are perfect on him this season – 4 steals last game before today, and today helton took third on him standing but the batter fouled the ball. and when we played them, we didn’t allow him to walk us, but he was not “on”.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

but we didn’t hit silva, so…
he’s way off this year, and it’s been commented on much here long before today – as i said, he is aware, i guess, and is tinkering with those mechanics which supposedly made him impervious to injury, wildness, etc.

but ERA is important too, as you said at red reporter:

by vivaelpujols on May 31
you can’t defend jaime with era and discount it for other pitchers.
people talk about bias in scouts but what about in sabermetricians – is it really as cold and analytical as it’s made out to be?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Sure ERA is important
It’s just very unstable. A difference of .5 runs of ERA (which is what Lincecum is experiencing this year) is NOT significant, because ERA has many factors outside the pitchers control.
It’s especially not significant when you look at his FIP and xFIP, which are below his career averages.
by vivaelpujols on Jun 1, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions
he is working on changing his motion/mechanics
i brought this up today, because i wonder what his father thinks. ubaldo will, like pedro, develop whatever he needs to continue to dominate. he’s that kind of talent, imo. pedro continued to develop, as did michael jordan. i think ubaldo will too. that is why when pedro lost velocity he could still dominate. and i also think ubaldo has more command than you assert.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
in some lines of work
one must be a fortune-teller.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
he's had half a season of ERA-driven "dominance"
comparing him to the best pitcher ever and the one with the most incomparable longevity is just asking for people to be difficult.
i don't really mind
people being difficult, just if they are willfully misinterpreting and constantly asking you to explain. only reason i brought that up. but hey, i’ve been behind this guy for a couple years now, so i’m not really gonna give up on him.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
basically you’re saying a tall muscular ubaldo can sustain a longer peak than a short skinny pedro. I get it, it makes sense.
Yes
There is no denying that Jimenez has been outstanding this year, and his stuff has been incredible. He’s averaging around 97 MPH with his fastball, which is just ridiculous.
But no one can sustain averaging 97 for that long just due to injury. I can say with high confidence that Jimenez will be sitting at around 94-95 in a couple of years, if he is lucky. and Jiminez throwing 94-95 is not a sub 1 ERA pitcher, but rather a 3.5-4 ERA pitcher.
by vivaelpujols on Jun 1, 2010 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions
but he isn't a strikeout pitcher either
he is a great athlete who has four plus pitches and considers himself a ground-ball pitcher so there is no reason to think he couldn’t remain well above league average into his late thirties(see Halladay, Roy)
Stats are like a girl in a bikini, both would agree that Joe Morgan is an idiot
I'm not saying he's a strikeout pitcher
That’s irrelevent to my point. I’m saying, given his command, deception and arsenal of offspeed pitches, he is a guy who will be hurt much more by a drop in velocity than other pitchers.

assuming his comand won't increase with a drop in velocity
Stats are like a girl in a bikini, both would agree that Joe Morgan is an idiot
Command doesn't really "increase"
At least not nearly at the rate that stuff declines. Jimenez has consistently been below average at throwing strikes. The only reason his walk rate has gone down is that batters are swinging at more pitches out of the strike zone because of the quality of his stuff.

halladay walked people all over the place before his third season
and chris carpenter did the same until he was two years older than ubaldo is now, don’t act like control is day one thing for these guys. Pedro had BB/9 rates of 4.8 and 3.1 in his first 3 years as a starter(granted he was 21)
Stats are like a girl in a bikini, both would agree that Joe Morgan is an idiot
Carpenter never had as bad of control as Jimenez
His career high in walk rate was 4.26 and in his first 4 years, those numbers were 4.09, 3.14, 2.88 and 4.26.
Jimenez, on the other hand, has a career average walk rate of 3.93 and a career high of 3.00 so far.

Even clemens had a 4.3 year
Nolan Ryan had several years over six, Randy Johnson had one that was almost 7, Curt Schilling had a 4.7 as a 24 yr old, Smoltz had years of 3.5 and 3.7 in his mid twenties, I think most power pitchers have some issues with BBs
Stats are like a girl in a bikini, both would agree that Joe Morgan is an idiot
to me it's just tough to look at numbers
in a vacuum. i don’t know if he’s walking the opposing pitcher, or pujols, or in what situations. it gives you a general overview, but to take it without context, without watching the games, can be tomfoolery, if you will. are those bb’s every other inning, or 3 in one inning – this is a “personality” trait that is overlooked. was he walking guys with a 4-run lead, or in scoreless games and being careful with a certain hitter – especially in coors – is that no longer a factor?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
walks may be more troublesome when
you can’t miss bats, but i’m not sure what the numbers say on that. seems to me you can make a case against anyone if that’s what you set out to do, or vice versa. there may not be bias in the numbers, but there certainly can be in the case that one wants to make.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
the guy hasn't slipped yet and i remember dave cameron saying in his 09
preview that he wasn’t sure ubaldo could repeat his 08 performance
Stats are like a girl in a bikini, both would agree that Joe Morgan is an idiot
fwiw, the san fran color guy
not sure who it is but an ex-mlb’er, said ubaldo has the best stuff in the NL, bar none, and this in a game timmeh is pitching.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I agree
Timmy’s stuff hasn’t been great for a couple of years. His command and deception on the other hand…
just saying these guys are the same age
and i’ll take ubaldo going forward – not only in their upcoming prime, but long beyond.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I don't get your assertion that Ubaldo will not be able to be
deceptive or develop good command because he had a 3.5 BB/9 last year as a 25 yr old but Timmeh had a 3.33BB/9 as a 24 yr old and is an excellent command pitcher
Stats are like a girl in a bikini, both would agree that Joe Morgan is an idiot
so issuing 85 walks in 216 innings of work is wild
but 84 walks in 227 innings is elite command? that seems like a hell of a slim margin
Stats are like a girl in a bikini, both would agree that Joe Morgan is an idiot
i'm watching the game now
i always watch his performances, usually not live but on archive. i’ve seen every one of his games this year. he’s not on my team, and it’s sensitive here on that, so i try not to bring it up too much (i’ve even tried to avoid the ely talk now), but if anyone can say he’s not the first pitcher you would take in an open draft to start a team, then i don’t know what to say. who would be desirable above him – strasburg?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Are we talking pure talent or age and contract status also?
I would take Halladay above Jimenez, Greinke too. I would put Josh Johnson and Verlander and Wainwright on a similar level.
just talking right now
as things stand talent- and age-wise. if you could have any of those pitchers for the next 10 years at the same price, who would you take? greinke would be my second choice, though barely over josh johnson.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Guys who strikeout a lot and hit for a lot of power will tend to have a higher BABIP than normal because when they put the ball in play, they put it in play hard
I’ll bet you 100 ebucks it will be closer to .330 than to .300.
Besides, even if his BABIP regresses he’s still a .350 wOBA hitter (wOBAr) and that’s assuming no drop in his strikeout rate. A .350 wOBA hitter with plus defense in center is awesome.
Why is putting the ball in play important?

i was just reading it with the up button, and confused
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
7 years isn't what I'd call that brief
Besides, Jimenez doesn’t have nearly the control or deception that Pedro had. If he loses 3 MPH on his fastball (which is likely to happen) he becomes a not that great pitcher.
by vivaelpujols on May 31, 2010 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions
it is brief in comparison to 15 years
the point was physically keeping it up, and i think ubaldo is much more equipped than pedro to do that.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
right
and nolan ryan a little more, right? of course we are talking different frames, etc, which is my point with ubaldo. he has a chance to be otherworldly as far as dominance at an age beyond 32, 33. as i said, pedro is my favorite pitcher ever, but i had no expectation of him at 37 still dominating – ubaldo i can see doing that.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
You can say that about a lot of guys
Josh Johnson is just as big and probably better to this point in his career (and lower FIP this year for kicks), Wainwright, Verlander, Felix etc.
Not afraid to nitpick
I could easily see Wainwright being better than Jimenez for longer
He doesn’t need to maintain a 95+ MPH fastball for him to be successful. If Jimenez gets injured and loses 2-3 MPH on his fastball, that will hurt him a lot.

Bullshit
I’ve offered a perfectly legitimate reason for me being skeptical of Jimenez’ future. Please refute that before calling us out for homerism.
by vivaelpujols on Jun 1, 2010 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions
you can make any case you want
i disagree with your assertion that ubaldo is reliant totally on his velocity. and i won’t get into the homerism on a fan site, because i’m not saying anything is wrong with it. ubaldo, imo, will get better and better. hey, that’s just my take – nothing personal.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
but i am not saying that
i am saying that my pick is ubaldo – that’s all. if i could have one pitcher going forward, i would take him. i said this when he came up as a reliever. it was obvious, at least to me, what this guy could be. yes, you could say that about some other pitchers, but i am not. this guy has been my bet for a few years now, and i am sticking with him – sorry. this is my opinion. he is the one i chose of that group back then.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
then pick one already
you are already years behind me – decide!
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Ummm I'm saying it's pretty pointless to pick one
Pitchers blow up in all sizes and Ubaldo isn’t anything more special in terms of success so far.
Not afraid to nitpick
i guess i could say that about a lot of guys
but i don’t, and am not. i’m saying ubaldo is the long-term cream of the crop, rightly or wrongly. i really don’t pay that much attention to the numbers at this point – they can be blinding – but rather just watch the performances and comment accordingly. if i’m in a rough spot with my thinking i’ll look at some select numbers, but otherwise i’m pretty comfortable with my eye-ball assessment, especially if i have any “background information” about a guy.
i’m merely judging talent/performance by eye-ball, i admit. i’ve missed on guys that haven’t made it to mlb, but very rarely once they get there – oliver perez after his first few outings with the pirates a notable exception. but i think ubaldo is out of that range at this point, and it is now a determination of just how dominant and for how long it will be.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
playoffs
i have a feeling we see them. i might pull a high school tennis move, and match penny or jaime against him, give carp and waino more favorable matchups. of course it’s too early to think about it, and i’d only do it if it didn’t cost one of them a start in the series.

the main problem with him is his arm isn’t very good, but I don’t think anyone claimed he had a great arm. I just wish him, and our offense overall really, weren’t as streaky

He's already improved upon last season.
I’m not saying he’s going to finish the season with nearly a .900 OPS but it’s not outside the realm of possibility.
He’s been slumping something fierce, and his OPS is still nearly .900. LINK
Obviously this season is only 1/3 over, so there’s plenty of time for these numbers to get worse or get even better. It’s not like he was hyped like Strasburg or Heyward.

just look his Babip is .369(before today) and he’s hitting only .262 when it drops his BA will drop and so will his OBP. He’ll need to keep his BB rate up and .Iso high if he wants to continue being a high OPS guy. And most importantly put the damn ball in play

Alot of that is bolstered by his unbelievable April
April: .323/.463/.708/1.171
May: .226/.320/.357/.667
If he plays the rest of the season like May, his season-ending numbers will probably fall below last year’s, and Chitown will have a point. I think he’s somewhere between, as he’s still walking a ton even when he’s not hitting for average, and I think people who are jumping off the Colby Rasmus bandwagon are a little trigger happy.

in any case, since no one is gonna tell me
if he’s a foreign-born pitcher, I recall a retired player and/or coach saying sometimes all the rules are not explained. so that’s a possibility. can you imagine explaining balk rules with a language barrier….

he plays for arizona
and i think balk rules are fairly uniform.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
so you're saying they're enforced the same way every time in every country?
the quote was basically that there are so many rules and situations, no one sits down with these guys and explains everything thoroughly. I think the trigger situation was Yadi — it’s immaterial where they play now.
in any case, I floated that as a possibility, since no one is clarifying which Vazquez did it so I can open my last tab and find his actual background.

i don't know which vasquez
but, yes, i believe the balk rules are fairly uniform, especially after going through the minors, etc.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
yes, but how many times do you actually encounter a balk situation
that’s what I mean. it’s a complex rule. it’s not just “don’t do this one thing.” it doesn’t matter to my point whether the balk rules are uniform. it matters whether they are uniformly taught.

by the time you are making $400K/year, minimum, to do a simple job
i think you should be expected to be able to find someone to explain the frigging rules to you in whatever language you need them explained in. I’m sure there’s someone out there who can explain the balk rules in czech, if necessary; finding someone who can do it in spanish should be trivial.

here in arizona
it’s like the announcers are being proactive to try to stem the “get rid of AJ” wave, yet the wave hasn’t rushed in yet. the team is bad — fundamentally bad as well as devoid of any big-time talent. i’m not sure whether the D-backs fan base is (1) apethetic or (2) so savvy that they understand it’s not AJ’s fault.

they need Upton to wake up and hopefully he is better than what he has been playing
I still like Reynolds a lot. Kelly Johnson has been hitting very well. but yeah, it had to be a major setback when Webb is not ready yet. Haren isn’t quite himself either. they have some potential, but they are not playing well. very bad bullpen always destroys a team’s morale too.
