Jaime Garcia
gets one more shot to influence the Rookie of the Month award.
JAIME!
babip giveth... and babip taketh away
Gotta give it to the rookie with the...
358/475/667 line.
Tis better to lose bunting than win with dingers alone...
other contenders
Freese had 17 RBI this month. Line: .311/.388/.485
Heyward had 19. Line: 358/.475/.667
Freese picked a bad year to be a rookie. Those are ROY-type stats in most any other year.
JAMIE, btw: 29.1 IP, 2-1, 1.23 ERA, 28Ks, BAA: .218
maybe JAIME has a chance since Heyward won last month. And since the cards are totally screwed after losing Penny and Lohse without him.

i kinda like it
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
DIPS is the original defense-independant pitching stat
invented by Voros McCracken in the late 90’s. It’s a very complicated formula. Like FIP, it’s derived from the linear weight analysis of baseball events (BB, SO, HR, H, etc).
One big difference between DIPS ERA and FIP is that DIPS uses league average components as part of the formula, rather than the league specific constant (~3.2) that FIP uses. It is also park adjusted, and uses a total batters faced factor rather than IP.
Basically, DIPS is better at the extremes, but you can calculate FIP in your head, and it tells you almost the exact same thing.

Tis better to lose bunting than win with dingers alone...
Dude has a .374 wOBA
What the fuck does a second-year, plus-defense center fielder have to do, exactly?
Hit the cut-off man?
In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"
-George Carlin (RIP)
I'm not saying that his fundamentals haven't been shaky at times
Especially his throwing. But let’s be real, he’s been a huge asset for this team, and it’s pretty douchey that people are suddenly insinuating that he doesn’t give a shit.
He's a streaky noodle arm...
who’s sucked for a month. It’s ok if people don’t like that.
Tis better to lose bunting than win with dingers alone...
Okay yeah, that's one way of framing it
He’s also one of the most promising young all-around players in the game, and probably a centerpiece of this franchise for the next four years. But I guess if you want to highlight the things about him that are not super-awesome and dwell on them, that’s your right.
FWIW
(and I think Colby’s got some learning to do) the coaching staff is revamping how he throws now. Could have something to do with it. I doubt it’s arm strength.
Think; It's not illegal yet.

We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives." Can someone tell Holliday that it's August?
In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

I love when they invalidate the accuracy of that stupid FoxTrax thing.
“THAT PITCH WAS SO HIGH! LET’S TAKE A LOOK!”
*ball catches a huge part of the FoxTrax strike zone
“…um…oh, hey, got a hit, cool! Pay no attention to our stupid strike zone thing!”
Looked like the catcher had trouble handling it.

FoxTrax uses gameday data, so the two will be similar
The thing is I don’t trust the estimates they use for the top and bottom of the strike zone
by vivaelpujols on May 31, 2010 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't think either one does a good job of knowing where the actual top of the strike zone is
That was CLEARLY a ball, because in the majors a ball at the letters isn’t a strike.
ATG, Arroyo is not getting strike calls.

well, he was -14 runs in 540 innings at 1B last year

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Nope, quite far actually
it was around Antigua and the capital city. That volcano from the 3rd or 4th picture is extremely active and just went kaboom on us. Covered the entire city in ash. Pana, on the other hand, was extremely affected by Hurricane Agatha. A couple of bridges fell, making it impossible to drive there and water is rushing through the nearby river. It is a critical situation for Guate right now…

was outside on the rampart, overlooking that river, and the service ended without me being aware. went back down the stairs and it was dark, the door bolted and locked inside. i had to bang on another door, groping around with a bic lighter, until a priest cracked it open, looked at me, and led me out through the courtyard of their quarters.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Haha!
Yeah… Pana has that effect on people. So much to look at and be bewildered…
I want the Walrus back...
there's that beautiful church in antigua
at least the exterior – there was a wedding so i didn’t see inside.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
didn't see that one
of course, didn’t spend much time in the city – straight from the airport to antigua, and after pana spent one night in zona viva before heading off to puerta barrios to catch a boat to belize.
do you know the church in antigua i’m talking about? i remember it as white and very fairy-tale ornate.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Yes, it is on the Parque Central, or central park
It is baroque-esque , with lots of candles on its facade for those wedding nights. I’ve only been in it a couple of times but it is certainly an eye-full… Antigua has lots of churches, but I am sure this is the one you are talking about.
I want the Walrus back...
that it is
cool. yeah, i was in the little park there – forget why exactly, but i’m sure my friend was responsible.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
wow those pictures are really something
Yes a little bit of water, a couple of tornados, whatever, are nothing to worry about.
the one picture of the white taxicab. I used to live across the street from a steel mill when I was a kid. The front of our car would look like that every morning. I would have to wipe off the window before we could drive.

Jaime gave up two groundball hits.
Colby was lackadaisical in his fielding of one of the hits and Brandon Phillips advanced to third on Colby’s poor throw. A third hit in the inning scored two runs.
Then, Colby hit an opposite field double, advanced to third on a groundball right in front of him, and Skip hit a sac fly to score him.

Wait a minute
this is a second hole… The first one opened up back in 07… Holy crap, there is definitely some weak drainage system in Guate… This is probably aftermath of the Agatha storm and the ash rain we just had… Amazing… And I live only minutes away from that crap…
I want the Walrus back...
that's what it said on the website
It was because of the Agatha Storm.
"Have you ever thrown a ball 100 miles an hour? Everything hurts. Even your ass hurts. I see pictures of my face and say, 'Holy shit', but that's the strain you feel when you throw." ~ Bob Gibson
It has certainly been tough...
The airport is paralyzed, bridges are falling, roads are blocked… Schools, nationwide, are suspended to serve as refuge. Had no idea that this hole opened up. I guess we could use all that ash that fell to cover it up. I, for one, filled 11 large garbage bags with pure ash from my roof…
I want the Walrus back...
I'm glad I don't live next door
But on the other hand it would be fascinating opportunity for research.

how come it's ok to criticize Holliday,
Ankiel, Duncan, Pujols, Thurston, Stavinoha, but if you say anything bad about Colby everyone gets their panties in a wad?
But Holliday is a $17M a year player, not a guy who is in his second season.
Duncan actually sucked after his injury, Pujols has spoiled everyone and people should probably relax about him, Thurston was a source of frustration b/c he should’ve been a bench player, and Stav should not be a bench player.
You can read it in any tone you like.
I like how you mention Ankiel first

Random thought
Lincecum was at 88-94 for the entire game except for 3 straight pitches at 96-97.7 (he hasn’t been near 97 all year) that had more horizontal movement than usual……and they happened to be against the pitcher Jimenez. I smell a PITCHf/x screwup.
Not afraid to nitpick
Pitch f/x doesn't usually screw up on individual pitches though
Most of them are miscalibrations that are present for the whole game. You might be right though.
by vivaelpujols on May 31, 2010 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah watched it on MLB.tv
The first one was 93 on the TV gun, the 2nd pitch was a changeup and the third 93. Somethin is wonky.
Not afraid to nitpick
I'll look at it later
I bet what happened is that the Pitch f/x operator accidentlally attached Ubaldo’s pitches to Tim Lincecum. Was Ubaldo the last out of the inning?
by vivaelpujols on May 31, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Top of the 2nd
The events are actually even right, (Pickoff to 1B, Swinging Strike, Foul, Ball, Groundout to end the inning) those pitches are just…..wrong.
Not afraid to nitpick
No, the Pitch f/x operator screw up
Ubaldo ground out on 5 pitches to end the top of the second. In the bottom of the second, the first batter that Ubaldo faced was Aubrey Huff and he walked on 5 pitches. Check out Huff’s at bat with gameday, there are no pitch speeds or pitch type or breaks attached to the pitches, so I’m guessing that the Pitch f/x operator accidentally attached the Pitch f/x data of Huff’s at bat to Ubaldo’s in the previous inning.
