Game 51 - St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs, May 30, 2010 2:20 PM EDT

Wainwright_medium
Demp_medium
Adam Wainwright Ryan Dempster
2.38 ERA 3.31 ERA
2.64 FIP 3.71 FIP
2.57 tERA 3.25 tERA

Forgive me for a moment while I revel in the amazing-ness that is Adam Wainwright. I would not be surprised if there are several women impregnated in the stands just watching him pitch. His awesomeness might be capable of that. Prove me wrong!

I really hate losing to the Cubs. It's a taller order today than it was yesterday (though perhaps a clumsier one) with Dempster on the mound. That said, it shouldn't take much behind Wainwright to make a win stick.

Let's go Cards!

Things that I never thought I'd see

Jon Jay batting 6th and playing CF for the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field.

Only if things had gone terribly, terribly wrong would I have envisioned this before this season started.

i really liked it, actually.

We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives." I would rather be facing Dempster than Silva right now, to be honest.

That said, this offense refuses to pull a full-fledged resurgance, hitting one day (or one inning) and then silent another.

If they make a deal for him, they pay the salary (lots of it). If they pick him up off waivers (after 23 other teams get a shot to do the same), they pay him ML minimum, with Detroit on the hook for the rest.

There once was a guy named Matt

whose performance at the plate fell flat
He signed for a ton of bucks
Yet his WAR has been schmucks
He’s supposed to clean up for Pujols
But his swing is full of holes
We all wish he gets hot with the stick
Cuz, as of now, it’s been far from sleek

If our 2-3-4-5 guys can hit like this....

our offensive really does click. Freese doing what Freese is doing has been such an amazingly pleasant surprise, however. If Colby can get back to how he was hitting in April….that’s a pretty devastating 2-6 swing. It lets us play Boog for his D, and rotate floppy around to keep guys fresh.

Of course, everything revolves around the Mang. As Albert goes, we go.

But he posted something along the lines that this team has the feeling that when/if Lee and Aramis start hitting the rest of the line up will stop. In the past he’s posted that Wrigley is a dump which is apparently the same as kicking a baby over there.

I don't care for WPA.

It’s basically a factor of ‘clutch’, which I don’t much believe in. MLB hitters are going to hit roughly to their talent level no matter the situation. Over the course of a small stretch, sure, it might look like someone can’t hit in very specific situations – i.e. men on base, but…

good news, everyone! /farnsworth
There is a chance the Cardinals will make a roster move before Monday’s game and promote a position player and return a pitcher to Triple A Memphis. Lefthander Evan MacLane was recalled on Saturday to give the team 13 pitchers, but manager Tony La Russa said he does not intend to keep the extra pitcher for long… The most likely move will be for the team to bring up veteran infielder Aaron Miles, who has been playing himself into shape at Double A Springfield after signing a minor-league contract. It also is possible Allan Craig could be recalled from Memphis.

Albert Pujols.

totally called the first home run today. 3 home runs in one game! little doubt that he’s still the mang. I got in some arguments with cubs fans today, said that Pujols was top 5 hitters of all time… which was sort of correct, if you look at career OPS he is. here’s the best reply on facebook to the top 5 hitters comment, it makes absolutely no sense, and is typical cubs fan drivel (because they don’t know what else to say when actually referencing a statistics site):

if you use that site then the cubs are the second best team ever in wins and a head of the cards in almost every batting category so as a team Cubs win

btw, I made no mention of the cards being better than the cubs, just how good Pujols is

I am trying to do a blockquote here.

cub fan 1
Pardon me for this little bit of complaining.

When it’s apparent during a particular season that there’s little chance for the postseason, I at least hope the Cubs have the chance to take all the series against the Cardinals.

Cubs, can you please at least take MOST of them this year, and not have any more games like this one? (rakum frakum Deadbirds, rakum frakum Pujols! I hate that man…)

cub fan 2
I’d differ with the first part of your opening sentence,

but otherwise, I agree. I despise the Cardinals with the heat of 1,000 suns.

end of block quote
that is a lot of dislike. I know I hate losing to the Cubs also.

i saw edmonds play at that same stage of his career

it's part of his job to keep the off-the-field issues off the field.

and if he’s too out of it to play, he needs to tap out.

he doesn’t need to be exceptional, but there are parts of his game that look fixable and/or look elementary to a player of his caliber.

Well...

They tinkered with the man’s throwing. They just de-tinkered that. He’s tinkering with eliminating the leg-kick in his swing. That’ll take some time to play out. What else? It seems to me that he’s very much working on improving.

You can read it in any tone you like.

by spants on May 30, 2010 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I missed the part where they tinkered with his throwing, of all things.

throwing to a different base and understanding how many runners there are is hard? for a professional player? even if there’s something mechanical being changed, that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about the mental mistakes. I’m sorry, we dog Albert when he does stupid stuff, I’m not giving Colby a pass on checking out during games.

focus

in the field and on the bases, is an issue. sometimes it even appears to be in the batter’s box. it’s frustrating as hell, and he shouldn’t get a pass. but he’s pretty young, and i think boog went through it, at least they say – he wasn’t as high profile with so much expected, so it wasn’t as apparent, or frustrating.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on May 30, 2010 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

They had him throwing his outfield throws on a one-hop.

Readjusting to throwing without the hop is probably not automatic. So the part of the game you have a problem with is him making mental mistakes. You said there were “parts” of his game that looked fixable. I was asking what parts you thought he wasn’t working on.

You can read it in any tone you like.

by spants on May 30, 2010 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

well my memory's not great at this hour, but let's see.

Signaling a runner to home which way to slide.
Knowing the ground rules at Wrigley Field.
Knowing when to throw to a cut-off man.
Putting up a hold sign when the ball gets away from a pitcher.

Fundamentals. I was told he was a finished product coming out of the minors. So no, I don’t expect him to be Jim Edmonds. Quite frankly he’s better at Edmonds at doing one thing: tracking fly balls and getting to them on time. But I expected Matt Holliday to be worse than him. As far as I can recall, Matt Holliday has yet to cost us a run in a game situation. Colby has. More than once.

Now I agree we’re being too hard on him, and that may be because he’s standing in a field where the guys to the left and right of him are outperforming him on both sides on the plate. And David Freese is coolly having the rookie year we expected of Colby. But there are problems here, and they are showing up in all parts of his game. I can’t just brush it off, because he keeps on doing them.

i've never noticed luddy not mentally engaged in the game

i think it’s the key to his success. with his superior talent, if colby develops that…

i think you were referring to this, but one thing really bugged me was colby in the box and a pitch got away from the catcher and he just walked away like it was none of his business instead of signaling the baserunner. he seems to still have a little of that attitude of “i’m here to hit, not walk” – all the aspects of the game are what make it so interesting, and i wish he’s develop an interest.

then i tell myself, he’s 23, and he’s not albert pujols.

it just seems so basic.

I mean, it’s a mental mistake, and there’s a certain latitude for it, but at the same time, it’s the kind of mistake a professional baseball player at any level should not be making. or a player in high school.

those mistakes worry the hell out of me. they’re very difficult to un-learn. and if he does know them, then there’s some other factor involved that’s interfering with his game.

i can't argue that, especially since i agree

some of it is little league, even. i just can’t recall noticing so many of these things last year. either i missed them, or they are just now cropping up – this is what i am uncertain of. if they existed last year, his learning curve is not good, and if they didn’t then something is going on.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on May 31, 2010 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, it's weird. I've been thinking back to last year.

there were so many things in play. the playing time was sporadic until Ankiel finally sputtered out. I think.

with things this year, it’s easy to mask it by averaging it out. our pitchers have been incredible — which means the majority of balls don’t make it out of the infield. if they do they’ve largely been going Holliday’s way. and… if all the flyballs are routine to Colby, because that’s his natural talent, his defense always looks good.

so taking those out, and leaving the ones that challenge him… he can go whole series without being challenged. so no usable sample size until maybe around mid-May. I dunno. the thing of it is, it’s the all-around game, too. it’s not just one thing. it’s like he’s spectacular at the stuff he’s good at, and then the mistakes are just… you want to think they’re outliers but then he keeps doing them.

soccer and basketball are more tests of endurance. baseball is more about reaction time and sprinting, etc. plus it depends on what position you play in each sport

basketball players are extremely strong

and huge, and have endurance, and are fast and can jump, which is explosiveness. i’d say they would win the decathalon of sports. baseball players do the single most difficult thing, which is hit a baseball. but basketball players also have terrific eye-hand coordination and reaction times.

I just watched that stanley cup game last night

and realized that hockey players are way up there too. they have to skate around all the time, and have to be agile on skates. they have to be tough and be able to take getting rammed against the boards, lose teeth, etc. they have to have a lot of endurance, and their hand eye has to be amazing considering the puck is pretty tiny. much respect to them… but I still like baseball much more, it seems like it has a lot of different types of athletic skills involved, and the widest variety.

I'll leave this to Lao Tzu

It's really hard to put them there

Just because not that many people really play hockey. If you put LeBron on skates at age 3 I’m pretty sure he still ends up being an insane skater/defenseman.

i'd have to see them off the skates to better understand

maybe skating takes more out of you than stopping and starting in bursts in basketball, idk, but they only play like 20-25 minutes of a game i think. they can skate, which differentiates them, but i’m not sure they can run fast and things.

Oh I know

But to say Ovechkin or whoever is among the most athletic people in the world is a tough case to make, we have no idea how he’d be at other sports/other athletes would be at hockey had they grown up with it. It’s a niche sport in terms of the number of people who play that basically requires you to have played when you were 5 years old to actually make the NHL, so no one, no matter how athletic, can just be a natural. The sport itself requires athleticism out the ass, but we don’t really know that the current hockey players are even the most naturally talented just because not enough people really play.

Plus being good at hockey is a whole lot less about who is the most athletic vs. who is the most skilled. Marian Gaborik among many others is almost certainly more athletic (speed, strength, shot power) than Crosby but the mystical “hockey sense” rules all.

he showed up at the very end of the dead ball era, but the twenties and thirties—in part because of him—were much different. The league OPS his last year in Boston is .695, then the first year in New York it’s .768.

by cardball on May 31, 2010 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions

absolutely

as I’ve stated 100 times, the definition of athlete is super broad. you just have to have skills in a sport, the better your skills, the more athletic you are. I think what people are talking about more applies to body building, etc.

I'll leave this to Lao Tzu

by Cards Fan in Chitown on May 31, 2010 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions

you are missing this

a non-athletic person could be a pro bowler or golfer or baseball player, at different percentages. 99% of basketball players are athletic. that is a very high percentage compared to other sports. soccer would have a similar percentage, but then soccer players don’t have the size or strength of basketball players.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on May 31, 2010 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions

i think

you consider:

i don’t. so we are obviously talking about two different things, since you would classify john daly as athletic.

by Cards Fan in Chitown on May 31, 2010 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

it all depends on what sport you are playing

and what goals there are to be accomplished. I still think hitting a 99mph fastball is going to be just as hard as anything else. you have to practice your whole life to develop these skills, so why compare the sports I guess. I’m pretty sold that hockey is the most athletic though, by that article.

I'll leave this to Lao Tzu

by cardball on May 31, 2010 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I grow tired of this argument

it’s all conjecture unless they go out and do it. a decathlon is not the definitive sport, is it? athletic just means you have a skill in a particular sport. it’s such a broad definition that this whole argument is pretty much conjecture.

is that they have to use their whole body just to be able to skate fast, then they have to have hand eye coordination to go after the puck, and they have to be very tough and have lots of endurance since their season is almost as long as baseball, well, it’s closest I think. and of course, all the skating around and taking shots, getting in fights, etc

carlos silva is a pro athlete, because he plays baseball, but he is not athletic. there are athletes in every sport – what i think this argument is, which sport has the highest percentage? in what sport do you 99% sure have to be athletic to play – a requisite. well, it’s not baseball, obviously.

by mattyp on May 31, 2010 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions

if you are a good bowler

it means that you are athletic at bowling, and have good muscle memory, hand eye coordination, etc.

being an athlete or athletic is completely subjective to what sport you are playing…. and is not limited to just body tone. you could have a perfect body but fucked up muscle memory and not be athletic

I'll leave this to Lao Tzu

by Cards Fan in Chitown on May 31, 2010 1:59 AM EDT up reply actions

well this is a stupid argument

but I’m trying to avoid work so: Within the context of a single sport, it may be somewhat subjective. That’s exactly why people have suggested methods of stacking up paticipants in different sports and objectively measuring them against one another, for instance in a decathlon (though that’s not necessarily how I’d make the determination). Now: bowler or basketball player. You tell me. That is clearly what most people are talking about when they debate the “most athletic” sport and to claim otherwise, or to justify a posittion of disagreement on the basis of some technical definition, is jsut being willfully contrarian for the sake of being willfully contrarian.

apples, oranges and bananas

Baseball players are judged on how they perform ANY or ALL of the skills of running, catching, throwing and hitting. If you can do ALL of them, you are an elite in the sport. But if you can do ANY of them very well, you still CAN be an elite. In basketball, most of the elite can do at least two (scoring and rebounding, scoring and passing, rebounding and defending). The argument becomes either “what is the most physically demanding sport” vs. “what sport requires the greatest skill set?” Baseball certainly isnt the most physically demanding but it does arguably require the greatest skill set.

making a three-pointer with a hand in your face

is as difficult as getting a hit – 30% success rate is good. let a baseball player try it, and let a basketball player try hitting. neither will do too well. so we put them in an athletic competition which requires every element of classic athleticism – the decathlon – and see who comes out ahead. the best baseball player is apu. pit him against lebron or kobe, whoever you think is the best basketball player. who wins?

The best athletes in any of the major sports would be successful in most of the other major sports if they had made that their pursuit at an early age. We all know “they guy” we went to high school with who was great at everything but had to choose which to pursue. Bo Jackson or Herschel Walker, anyone? Jordan tried to prove (unsuccessfully) that one skill set automatically translates into another. With development, maybe, but it isnt automatic.

my personal opinion is that since you don't NEED to be athletic to be successful in baseball

its not more athletic…. i mean you could argue so and so is one of the most athletic players but he doesn’t NEED to be in order to be successfull… i mean just look at the traits

hand-eye coordination – none needed
speed – not necesarily related
quick reaction – a lot of times they have athleticism, but imma have to say that aren’t necessarily related as well
power – none needed

once again a lot of times, players have good athleticism and sometimes it translates to those, but I’m guessing there are examples of players who have all those traits and aren’t necessarily athletic

I tend to agree with this comment most, since I am biased towards baseball

I don’t know how to compare different sports which require/reward different athletic skills. For example, is a sprinter or marathon runner the better athlete? What about powerlifters vs. high jumpers? Wrestlers vs. cyclists? What about the decathlon?

Baseball can test a broad range of skills, particularly complex motor skills involved in fielding, hitting, and pitching. To perform those acts well at the professional level requires quite a lot of athleticism. Most sports tend to test a narrower set of skills.

I don’t buy that soccer players win under that criteria—-really just not enough size/strength. I usually end up going with football/basketball depending on how you value strength, but usually end up with basketball with LeBron being the tiebreaker seeing as how he could probably dominate football too. I feel convinced that LeBron could have been good at any sport aside from baseball (too tall=too many holes in swing—-maybe as a .pitcher but who knows if he has that type of athleticism).

after watching the stanley cup on saturday

I’m beginning to think hockey players are maybe the most athletic. football and basketball are up there too.

but it’s apples vs oranges type of argument to me, each sport has it’s own requirements for skills. it’s rare to see an athlete be able to play multiple sports well.

(this year, I should say)

I think overall Yadi leads by a substantial margin.

I’m finding Goold and Hummel talking about it in 2008… they didn’t start keeping that stat till relatively recently in the modern era. It says Pudge had 81 back then. Then it goes down to Benito Santiago with 45.

Yadi is well into the mid-30s.

I’m wondering how many more Pudge has now. his playing time wasn’t great, and he’s been hurt.

chitown, just look at b-r fielding stats, and they will give you the percentage, which is all that matters since no one runs on yadi

it is rather annoying that Yadi is so astronomically good at stats that no one bothered to keep.

just one case in point. no way to compare the historical context because there’s no data, or no data before a certain point.

if that costs him in certain recognitions later, I’m gonna be hella pissed.

I don't want the percentage

I want the total number of steals vs catchers

I'll leave this to Lao Tzu

by Cards Fan in Chitown on May 31, 2010 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions

while interesting...

it would be a totally misleading stat, more dependent on the number of baserunners allowed, longevity/innings played, etc., rather than a catcher’s ability to (1) throw out runners or (2) convince teams not to try to steal in the first place.

by puffymonkey13 on May 31, 2010 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions

I found it

only 12 stolen bases against us as a team, best in the majors. Padres are 5th

Hmm...

That may be true, but the Cardinals require a quick move to home. They actually time the pitchers. Some teams care more about this than others.

by spants on May 31, 2010 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

semi-serious question

do any of the cards pitchers have a plus-pickoff move (if there is such a thing?). You would think, simply because of the abundance of right-handers, that the time to the plate is probably more important than the pickoff move (plus yadi has the best pickoff move on the staff).

but it’s been confirmed as a set play between Albert and Yadi, and I have seen what looks like Dave Duncan calling a pickoff play. Albert probably wants them to try it, just to do that double-tap with the glove.
