So hey guys
Yesterday I went to the Giants game and I had to watch Todd Wellemeyer pitch and I was like, WHY CAN’T I ESCAPE YOU!!!!!! And then he threw some shutout baseball out of the pen and I was like, WHERE WAS THAT LAST YEAR, ASSHOLE!!!!!!
And then today I sign onto Yahoo Fantasy Baseball and there’s his stupid face under the “Who’s Hot” section.
I nearly cried.
why can't i quit you, colonel?

Too heavy for a laptop
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
it's a fair argument.
i don’t carry mine around really at all. not to class or anything like that, so i just don’t care all that much.

I have a 15 inch Macbook Pro, and it's at the very upper tier of laptops I would take to class with me
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
twss about laptops
I have the same size MacBook Pro, and if I were to get another laptop—I don’t think I will—I would go smaller the next time. It’s too much of an ordeal, and too expensive a computer, for its portability to really be useful unless I’m going on a trip of some kind.
Word
Getting a powerful Macbook Pro + a netbook is a pretty nice combo
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
I'm not a Mac person
But if and when I have money and go for another computer, which won’t be anytime soon, I’d definitely go with a beast moded 17 inch laptop and a netbook/tablet if they actually get that whole thing figured out.
Not afraid to nitpick
I'm definitely moving to desktop/netbook after my current laptop dies
Maybe a tablet, depending on how far into the future we’re talking here. I don’t really want an iPad right now, but who knows what the tablet PC market will look like in a few years.
They predicted the Marlins would win!
Kind of!
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
I have a 17 inch widescreen
but…I had to have a decent laptop with a number pad. I’m a mathematics major, and <3 number pad. It’s a pretty lightweight Asus model, though, despite the screen size.
i hate apple.
that is all. but i’m not really interested in arguing with you. so…yeah.

Don't hate Apple
They are what they are. Everybody knows they’re overpriced, but they’re good products, and people buy them
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
I hate Apple
But it’s a principle thing. Their hypocrisy over “open” technology irks me. That said, I own an iPhone, and I love it, and their great products are why they can get away with being kind of dickish in some of their business practices.
me and you could be friends.

Apple is what they are, which is fine
But the fact that there are Apple fanboys who would buy anything they make—-and make sure to let everyone know that they did buy it—-is annoying as fuck. It’s a computer not a fashion statement.
Not afraid to nitpick
If I were an academic
I would write an essay that technology IS a fashion statement
But I’m far too drunk for that
So all I’m gonna say is that I love my iPhone, and I hate hipsters
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'

Verducci specifically, I think.
>Pitcher Change: Felipe Lopez replaces Ryan Franklin, batting 7th, replacing third baseman Felipe Lopez
Consider this
Garcia could be #3 in the playoffs against the Phils. Or he might be that lefty specialist we pull off the bench in a playoff series. Regardless, Garcia did VERY well tonight.
We'd probably just use 4 starters against the Phils.
Carp, Wainright, Penny, Garcia. He did very well tonight, though a few questionable walks to people he shouldn’t be walking hurt him.
I found our objective...
30 game lead. Cleveland Indians won 100 games in 1995, KC won 70. We can do this, especially playing Pittsburgh, Houston, and KC about 40 more times.
Franklin !#@$!&*%#
I really enjoy the NL Central right now
it’s going to lead people to question us all season long because it’s laughably bad but I don’t care. We’re going to scythe through this division like a hot knife through butter.
Think; It's not illegal yet.
GOB tempting.
Houston goes on a 38-2 tear, catching up. Almost.

>Pitcher Change: Felipe Lopez replaces Ryan Franklin, batting 7th, replacing third baseman Felipe Lopez
Well. I was going to say Brewers...but...
They just got shut out 3 times in 4 games by the Padres. I’d say Cubs, but…while I think Chicago will finish second in the division, I don’t think they have that kind of run in them. Cincinnati has the young talent to maybe make a push, but I don’t think it’s this year.
So, that left Houston. A team with several guys who, if everything went well, could perform at decent levels.
If we keep beating teams like the Phillies in their own park
Folks will probably hold their yappers. Hopefully.
Depends on injuries
With the way we are pitching, we could have a couple spells where we win 19 of 23 or 25 of 30.
This staff is just rock solid.
they'll do that

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

Macro's the worst
Too much interconnectedness.
What’s good in the short run is bad in the long run. What’s good for unemployment is bad for inflation. If interest rates increase, investment falls, which means GDP falls, which means unemployment rises, etc. etc.

I'm not making fun of you
just the idea that you hate Apple enough to believe they’re sabotaging their own software to get you to use a Mac. Think about the thought process there:
1. iTunes and Safari suck compared to WMP and Firefox
2. Therefore I should buy a Mac.
I tried Safari for Windows when they first released it—the one that looks nothing like a Windows program—and it was terrible. 4.0 seems to be a lot better, but if I were on Windows full-time I’d probably just use Chrome. (I use OmniWeb on the Mac, for that matter.)
yeah, it doesn't make sense
it stil sucks on a PC. no worse the MS’s baby. IE and safari are about comparable. they’re both resource hogs and they both suck
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
i know it's silly
and i know they don’t sabotage their own software, but i sometimes get irrational in my hate for apple. it happens.
however, i don’t know why itunes and safari run like shit on pc. it’s really quite annoying.

I haven't had a lot of problems with iTunes for PC
as for Safari, my guess is it’s just not their top priority. Way too crowded a browser market to actually penetrate, but so long as a version exists they can offer it to people who are Apple fans generally.
yeah
and like we’ve mentioned before, some people will run safari on their pc’s simply because it’s an apple product.
itunes has long loading times. at least when i’ve used it. been a good 4-5 years though.

well, neither side liked the strike zone
we got a break on a call at first, and it sure looks like in the still that boog’s hand is off the bag at third. anyway, the ump probably asked tony, “what was he thinking anyway?”

Avast is free and solid.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is also solid for me.

Has Jim Hayes any idea how baseball is played?
Just advocated Blanton’s elbow at Schu saying thats hes minding his own business running where hes supposed to be.
Um Jim, running inside the baseline is not running where you’re supposed to be. And trying to elbow someone is MMA shit, not baseball.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
watch the replay
or look at a still photo. it was a reflex reaction when suddenly someone comes into you. the throw was off and led schu into him. wasn’t a dirty play, and did not affect the outcome, as the throw was uncatchable in that circumstance. we caught a break.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Your reflex reaction when someone is trying to catch a baseball next to you....
is to elbow them?
Hold on, let me get you the number to some anger management classes.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
(I can see tucking your elbow in to brace for impact)
But throwing an elbow as a reflex reaction? No. I totally disagree. Its a good way to get you or someone else injured.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
here's my take
Blanton’s running hard close to or down the line. All of a sudden he sees Schumaker lunging towards him (the ball trajectory) and he raises his left arm to protect his head. Natural human instinct, as far as my experience goes, that if you see something coming towards you, you protect your head. Same situation as when you protect your belly from a jab. Instinct.
exactly what happened
you don’t expect all of a sudden a guy to go lunging at you. good throw would have had him but it was about 6 ft off
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
You don't protect yourself by extending your elbow, you tuck the elbow in.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
to each his own i suppose
i’ve done both myself. it’s just a reflex either way. and blanton is not a-rod, in fact the opposite. genuinely cool dude that used to room with one of my buddies. guarantee you the cards say the same thing.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Tony LaRussa in the postgame interview:
‘Well it was interference either way. He was int he baseline. And he threw an elbow at schu.’
They may say the same thing, but don’t let your personal opinions of a guy change what happened. The elbow was extended and he was literally on the first base line. It was the right call.
P.S.: Boxers are taught to defend with elbows down, fists up to cover more body area and cover the face, leaving your elbow up allows for the torso to be open to body blows and shots from an uppercut.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
he was running a straight line to the bag
he bunted and began his run about 5 ft into the infield. of course he was inside the line. it wasn’t like the catcher was throwing to first and blocked. it was a horrible throw, and we caught a break. i would have to hear how tony said that, because he did not mean to insinuate what you are insinuating. this play happens all the time in baseball, with the first baseman led by a bad throw into the runner. usually it results in someone getting blasted. there was no ill-intent on that play. of course, to cardinal fans the umpires suck, understandable, and the phils site says exactly the same the other way. i’m just trying to be objective about it. if i was schu i’d certainly have no hard feelings on that play.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Yeah, can we both agree that it was interference though?
Regardless of the throw? If he doesnt stick that elbow out, I dont think its interference.
(and I wasn’t insinuating anything, what I meant was that TLR believed it was interference either way, and that Tony said he ‘threw the elbow’, Im sure theres respect there, it was just not a smart way to protect yourself)
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
(if he really was doing what you said he was doing)
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
no, i don't think it was interference
because the play was not interfered with. the ball was past the bag already, so you can’t say he would have been out except for “interference”. i would have given a throwing error, and left it at that. no advantage was gained by the runner. i haven’t heard the umpire’s reasoning on it yet, so i’ll refrain from making a 100% statement. i’d like to hear his explanation, which we will, since he tossed manual.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Interference does NOT have to mean that a play was interfered with....
It means that you are interfering with another player just as if you were running to second base and the second basemen stands in front of you and makes sure you cant get around.
He was on the baseline (interference in itself, although I never agree in calling this) and he threw an elbow inside the baseline AT schu. Its interference one way or another. End of argument.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
umm, that example you cited is classic interference
you cannot impede the baserunner.
anyway, i’ll take the call. who knows what would’ve happened if they didn’t call it. right there you take the win and leave it at that.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
WOW
NO, the baserunner CANNOT be in the field of play on the first base side. Its baserunner interference.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
The first base side is granted to the fielder until after the player touches first base.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
well, i'm talking about your example of a guy
running to second.
as far as being inside the line, this is typical, look where he began running from. there was no intent to impede a throw from behind him, which is the only time i have ever seen it called, though it happens every day.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Yeah, thats Blantons fault though.
And I know he wasn’t trying to impede the throw, according to you, he was trying to protect himself by sticking out his elbow.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
Btw, by end of argument, I was suggesting that my argument was over...
I just realized that could be taken as stubborn.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
well, he's a righty hitter
they are all going down the line from the inside. i just think when the play is not affected, you don’t make that call, and it’s the first i’ve seen it called. it had absolutely no affect on the outcome of the play.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I agree it had no impact
but its still interference by definition unfortunately.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
like i said, i'd like to hear the ump's explanation
i pray we’re not going to see that called every time a righty goes down the line and there’s a bad throw.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Doubt it.
That umpire is obviously a One-of-a-kind personality.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
if the throw had gone into the stands
the effect would have been the same, but would the ump have called it? that’s why i want to hear his explanation.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Rewatched the play
Schumakers foot was in the middle of the bag, it could have been interference on schu.
And Blanton probably wasnt trying to elbow schu, but he was preparing to run bulldoze him over.
My opinion now is that it was certainly a makeup call.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
that will not bode well for tomorrow
if they determine there was actually nothing to make up. i’m gonna try to find the still photo, maybe the phils site will have it, but it looked like there was daylight between the hand and third.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Yeah
but I think most of us agree that Boog was safe, his right hand came back to the bag during the time of this supposed ‘separation’.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
there's a photo
they showed it on the phils broadcast. it was from above third base, and it looked like daylight. i have to see it again though. anyway, if you put yourself in that situation, you take your chances that could happen.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
he never took his left hand off the plate.
you see daylight because polanco is over his hand. he then shifted his weight and put his other hand on the bag.
when he straightened up, while they were calling it (his back was to the ump), he transferred his feet to the bag.
there was literally no lost contact with the base at any time.
Lick that shoulder—you're in the doghouse now.
"But listen, and understand: more Molinas are out there..." - THT
i watched the replays
but i want to see the still again. whereas in the replay i thought he never lost contact, in the photo, where i thought he had contact with the other hand, there was about 2 inches of dirt between his hand and the bag (while the other hand was obviously off the bag).
not that it matters now, just hope he’s not in the doghouse too much. even if tony thinks he was safe, it was still a poor decision, and i believe he threw that ball to first almost got schu killed.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I really don't think the overhead angle is the right angle.
there were too many bodies in the way between the bag and the sky. you can see him keeping contact from field view.
and Brendan can’t sell anything worth a damn. he had no idea he was out. unless you’re suggesting he had no idea he was off the bag, when he had his face right in there, not to mention can feel it.
I’ve seen him overshoot the bag plenty. he knows it. immediately.
Lick that shoulder—you're in the doghouse now.
"But listen, and understand: more Molinas are out there..." - THT
in other words, it's under polanco.

the picture will turn up
i’ll replay the game if i have to to find it. boog may have thought he was safe, i have no idea. from his reaction my initial thought was he thought, “oh noes i didn’t…this can’t happen…c’mon blue, you know how much trouble i’m already gonna be in over this”
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
You think he was protecting his head?
Then protect your head and duck. Watch the replay again, he threw his elbow and didn’t move his head.
There is no way that throwing an elbow protects your head. Cmon guys, you’re really trying to defend a Blanton elbow?
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
Do it while running and pumping your arms
It’s possible.
>Pitcher Change: Felipe Lopez replaces Ryan Franklin, batting 7th, replacing third baseman Felipe Lopez
especially when you're much taller than the other guy
it was skip’s arm and glove extended that was up in his zone.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Then why didnt he defend that zone?
He didn’t, he was trying to bulldozer/linebacker his way on.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
I will say that he tilted his head down to protect the glove
And IMO if he doesnt extend that elbow into schu, the umpire doesnt make that interference call.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
if he wanted to bulldoze him
he could have. thank god he didn’t. like i said, it was a bad throw that caused the whole situation. can’t blame blanton for that.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
He put his head down and stuck out his elbow
He was gonna run over Schu, not brace for impact which is an invitation to put a pitcher BACK on the DL.
And yeah, cant blame Blanton for that. But I think he was frustrated with the double play earlier and was gonna make sure it didnt happen to him again.
(Pssst: It did!)
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
I re watched it,
and I am of the firm opinion that Blanton, is an asshat.
Asshattery: it's an epidemic.
Also, Dave Concepcion.
Nice, way to reference your sig.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
of course had schu been right in front of him he would have been flattened
blanton is a big dude running full speed and was not going to try to stop or avoid contact and thereby be injured himself. it was unfortunate that a throwing error on our side led to this.

The Dodgers would be the main guys here.
They need an ace, even though they have 2 young guys with loads of potential. They can probably ship over Dee Gordon if they Mariners want him.

So, who are our All-Stars this year?
This will never happen, but just playing around:
Pitchers:
Carpenter
Wainwright
Penny
Garcia
Position Players:
Pujols
Freese
Rasmus
Molina, Holliday and Ludwick are all borderline right now.
How good would it feel to roll into the playoffs with four All-Star starting pitchers.
Don't know about Rasmus
Too streaky at this point. Don’t think he makes it. Freese has Zimmerman and David Wright to deal with, so he very well might not get in. Molina will be an Allstar in my view.
Wainwright and Penny would be my guesses for starting pitching.

golf is fun
I would never be too serious about it, I like bowling more. but I’d like to do it a couple times a summer at least (if I could afford to). what I’d really like to do is start playing baseball again. I ran into this guy around 40 at a bbq last summer and he was going to go play third base in a game of hardball. was so jealous of that guy.
pianos are really cool, if you have a lot of space and time to play around with it, they sound really cool, they’re like several different types of instruments rolled into one. I still prefer electronic keyboards and synths though.

As of right now, you're only taxed up to like $100,000 for Social Security
If we raise that, then the tax rate wouldn’t go up, per se, just that more of your income is taxed
That should be more than enough to cover, in the short run, Social Security deficits until the Baby Boomer generation is over
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
what about medicare?
that’s a bigger drain on funds and health car ain’t getting any cheaper.

looking stuff over, how are the Cubs only .500? They arguably have more guys that could make my arbitrary all-star team than the cardinals do, at this point in time. But I’m being pretty dumb and constructing it like a real team, rather than loading up on the best players so far this year, period. So they get lucky via position requirements.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Wow, you are all about us feeling the effects of that call. You act like we cheated the Phils out of a win.
Listen, we didnt make the call. The umpires did and its totally and completely unprofessional to carry ONE bad call (which there was many in this game) over to the next game.
We won by 3, – that run = 6-4.
Victorino struckout in the next AB, btw. There is no stat for momentum.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"

yeah, but you cannot look at events that way
doesn’t matter what victorino did next inning. we have no idea if they get five that inning. it changed the game. i don’t feel like we cheated anyone out of the game. we got a break, and they will even out. i’ll take this one, and try not to bitch too much when one doesn’t go our way in the future.

That's an ultra-pessimistic, karmic downer, anti-happy attitude you have there.
Are you suggesting some sort of fallout for ONE call not going the Phils direction? Ludicrous. Absolutely ludicrous.
Either you do or you don’t, either the call is out or its safe. Any ump who bases the call of a play on a PREVIOUS games decision is misplacing the blame of the call on the Cardinals and NOT on the Umpiring crew.
Are you sure you shouldn’t be writing for ‘My Name is Earl’?
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
i guess you weren't here when we got the call at first
a bunch of posts went up at the same time: make up call. so i’m apparently not the only one thinks this – it happens all the time, even on balls and strikes, and in every sport. has nothing to do with karma, just human nature.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
From a Fans' perspective, of course it looks like a make up call.
A make up call is a perceived action, not a fact unless an umpire suggests it is so.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
You really think that the umpire made that call off the top of his out of a need..
to right a previous wrong? WOW.
It still doesnt change the fact that if the umpires do try to alter tomorrows game, they are misplacing the blame.
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."

Being a former umpire myself
I never made a call that I didnt believe the correct decision at the time. If I felt later that I made a bad decision, I would try harder to make smarter decisions the next time around.
To make a ‘make up call’ is to destroy the integrity of the game. And in this case, if it was a ‘make up call’. Then shouldnt we be even?
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
yeah, exactly man
i am/was an umpire too, and the concept of a make up just bothers the hell out of me. I evaluated every call and play in a vacuum, did not care what the other team had done in the previous play or whatever.
when i make a bad decision, and that’s inevitable, the key is just to be really self-assured and confident. not a dick, not arrogant, but confident in yourself and the rules.
howeva, all of us former umpires can agree on one thing: teams that score the necessary run to take the 10-run rule off the table have a special place reserved in hell for them.

only if they got the call at third wrong
boog probably threw some doubt in their minds by his reaction, but the irony would be if they made a makeup call on a call they never needed to make up. in any event, it was a poor baserunning decision, a case of placing yourself in a situation/place that you shouldn’t be in. sometimes it’s just a little unseemly if you protest too much about what happened to you in that place.

i didn’t mean that. when i was talking about i hope we don’t pay for it tomorrow, i meant with the GOB’s. i probably didn’t separate my thoughts well. make-up calls are generally an in-game thing, and don’t carry over.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Ok, ok. I mistook what you meant then.
But still, Im superstitious and all, but not that superstitious. Shit happens. And its awfully pessimistic to go around thinking, ‘We shouldnt have got that call, we are going to pay for it in the long run’ because in the end, we didnt make the call and it would be false justice.
Now, if we intentionally plunked a dude in the head and later on one of our best players go down, I can see it. because thats ‘justice’. LOL

Seemed like a bad call...
But so was the call at 3rd with Brendan.
They probably cost each side a run.
So I don’t feel bad.

VEB Day Ticket
So bad news. I can’t go to VEB day, but I bought a ticket from indakind. I have my ticket in hand and was wondering if there was anybody out there that didn’t get one that would like to go and sit with the rest of the group in section 509. Email me if you are interested. I’d be really stoked if I got the $31 bucks that I paid for it!

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
the cornmill of the gristmill as it is commonly known as is quite an interesting story
The Corn Mill has been grinding flour for at least seven hundred years, and owes its foundation to the Cistercian monks of Valle Crucis. It is first mentioned in a 13th Century document dealing with a fishing dispute between the freemen of Llangollen and the Abbot. The building as it now stands was re-built in 1786 with three pairs of grinding stones, and continued as a working mill up until 1974. By the time Jerry and Graham came across it, however, it was sadly derelict and in danger of falling into the river. It is owned by a friend of Jerry’s called Phil Brown, and we ended up leasing the mill from him for fifty years. We used a very talented chap called Owain Evans as architect, and appointed Read and Co., a decent local builder with a good reputation. Planning permission took years, because of course it’s an important old building. The planning authorities, based in Ruthin, thought the conversion to a pub/restaurant was a great idea and wanted it to go ahead. The conservation officer really wanted the building restored to a mill. The local council didn’t want the thing at all, and in addition we had to deal with the Historic Mills people, the River Authority and CADW, (the Welsh building conservation body), each of whom had a different agenda, so at times it was like herding cats. When we finally re-opened the building in June 2000, lots of people came to see what we had done with it, as there is genuine affection for the Mill locally. There was a lot of excitement when we finally got the water wheel turning again for the first time in twenty-five years. One visitor, who has since become a regular, had been born in a bedroom upstairs, and found on our walls a framed photograph from the 1950’s of her father with his dog in a coracle on the Mill race. We still have the actual coracle, which we’ve mounted on the wall at the top of the stairs. She insisted that in the ceiling of the ground floor there had been a huge ship’s beam with a 17th century date carved into it, but we’ve never found it.The place has gone like a train from the very beginning. Mind you, if we’d known how much it was going to cost from the outset, the truth is we probably would never have started.

He hits the ball the other way a lot and pitchers tend to pitch it there a lot regardless of the hitter’s preference…

im not sure if its just me, but I rarely if ever (never consciously) see hitters getting pounded inside purely for their “hit-the-other-way ability” (probably cause that’s rare)

i think he’s incredibly fluky and if your league counts Ks, the value you’re getting SBs can’t be that much more. If Rajai Davis is available, he’d be a nice substitute with likely more production down the line. I’d ride it out until Jacoby comes back, but I’m not at all high on Jackson

why the hell did he drop that far with that signing bonus?

he was first round, right?
i mean, he’s a centerfielder out of high school. that seems pretty high. would be interesting to see how many high school centerfielders have been taken first round. pitchers, ss (even if converted, like upton) – these are the high schoolers go first round – and catchers like mauer.
in other words, not sure he dropped.

Holliday remembers the whirlwind events of last July 24 with some fondness.
"It was a pleasant memory checking in the hotel last night," the outfielder recalled before Monday’s game. "It was all the more special this time knowing I will be spending most of my career here. I definitely have fond memories of this trip."
Though both clubs are again in first place in their respective divisions, there is a difference in 2010.
"My kids are still in school back in St. Louis now," Holliday explained with a smile.

it's pretty funny
but at the same time, a little harsh to taser someone who is no apparent threat. tackle the fucker and get a few punches in – though it might be a liability thing, where tasering him is “safer”
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
i don't think tasering does any long-term physical hurt on the victim
so i don’t have a problem with it… it momentarily shocks you and pretty knocks you out for a while, but other than that it seems “*safe”

unless, you know, you have a heart condition. then it kills you.
tasers were designed to be a substitute for deadly force, not the universal tool for subduing people who are slightly ornery.
"We were men - flesh and blood - and we played baseball in the sunshine. We hit doubles off the wall, slid hard into second base. We had fights, and we made love. We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives." well at that point i'd just say
the person should no better than to put himself in a position to be tasered….

ok im sorry, let me rephrase
most people with heart conditions are 50 and older (thus easy to contain without a taser sometimes)
and most people with heart conditions aren’t the type of people to put themselves in that position…. i mean most people with heart conditions don’t drink I assume

vazquez is making at hard on me
he’s gotta be better than what he’s doing, but he was the first pitcher i drafted
fielder was my first pick and he is sucking it up, too. come on, guys
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
why did you pick vasquez as first pitcher?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
because he was a top 4 pitcher in the NL last year
i had already taken fielder, upton and cano, so the lincecums and greinkes of the world were gone
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
either way
i’ve got cain, sanchez and matusz pitching well and davies doing well enough. i just expected better than a 10 ERA from vazquez
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
yeah, i don't play so i forget about scoring and all
just there’s about 10-15 guys in the national league i’d take in real life over him last year, so i forget he did finish like 4th in cy voting. they should probably trade him back to atlanta for lowe – though i’m mostly kidding. i see the yanks are giving him some time “to breathe”, gonna skip at least his next start.

Stav is not good, but
he chooses some very opportune moments for his reasonable facsimile of good.
Plus he has more homers than I do. I suck all the time. He just sucks most of the time.
He keeps doing this once a month and he still wouldn’t be mistaken for a good player, but he would certainly take the edge off and leave some good memories- a la Tom Lawless’ bat flip.
Perhaps eventually he can know as the “yeah, he’s a shitty backup outfielder, but damn it, he’s OUR shitty backup outfielder” guy.
