That's a tough game to lose—more specifically, a tough game to not tie—but it's early yet, and this makes me appreciate even more the Cardinals' narrow victory yesterday.

Grilled Cheese is good…Deep Fried items can be good…. I think I’d be down with it if there was grilled chicken in the sandwich as well, and maybe a BBQ dipping sauce?

having 3 auto-outs at the end of the lineup hurts too

but maybe if the big guns get rollin’ the guys like Skip & Ryan will relax and perform better

your second sentence

esp. if it’s a mental / comfort thing

I mean, whatever it is afflicts up and down the lineup, it’s just that different players have different ceilings. base-running. the few holes on defense. other teams will game-plan to hit those weaknesses.

on the other hand, I would rather our weaknesses be exposed now rather than later, and while the rest of the division is still naked like a streaker in the Bank

The middle-infield black hole really needs to be dealt with. By now I’m in favor of Floppy coming back to a starting role as soon as he’s healthy, no matter what penalties that imposes in defense. This can’t go on.

follow up question

i’m out of town and didn’t get to watch it. did Jose Oquendo send him?

follow up question #2:

Skip ran from 1st?

#3:

so was it a great throw(s) or is he just slow (people seem to think he’s fast, so not true)

Thanks!

by kalmavet on May 15, 2010 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, Oquendo sent him.
Yes.
Great throw from LF, then Yes, he’s slow. (And to be fair, Mather smoked that ball, which didn’t help Skip.)

Skip sings sadly

am I not gritty enough?
is my swing too broken?
do I slide head-first too much?
is my spot just token?
don’t you think I’m clutch?
should I just run faster?
why do send, why do you send, why do you send me this time?

If the Cardinals are going to lose, that is the way to go out.

Tie game if skip runs like Freese/Colby/Mather. That’s my main gripe about our offense overall (the other things will work themselves out). But we’re not getting any faster, and our fast guys aren’t good at stealing bases, while our slow guys are generally our better baserunners (with the exception of Mather).

But games like that are why I love baseball.

Would it really be so bad

if Tony at least tried batting Holliday in front of Pujols for a couple of games? Matty is having a tough time right now and I just wonder if this might help.

Here is what I would try for a upcoming series:
1. Shumaker
2. Rasmus
3. Holliday
4. Pujols
5. Ludwick
6. Freese
7. Yadi
8. Ryan/Lopez
9. Pitcher

Heck I'd try that too

Matt needs to be out of the clean-up spot for a few games to maybe get him going. I think he’s starting to put to much pressure on himself right now. This offense needs a jumpstart and moving Holliday at a different spot might work. I would have him back at clean-up once he gets going.

i've always thought holliday should bat in front of albert

this would help holliday, and you can’t really help albert. this is how the red sox did it – batting ortiz in front of manny helped ortiz immensely, imo, because he was the lesser of the two hitters.

different than last year because he has the big contract now. but after giving him the big money to “protect” albert…i just don’t see them making this move, even if it makes sense.

"holliday struggling"

FWIW, in the 11 games played in the month of May, before today, holliday has hit .357/.413/.452. In the last 5 games, before today, .375/.444/.438.

That .400+ OBP would definitely look better in front of pujols than behind, but he hasn’t exactly been Derreck Lee or Aramis Ramirez during the “slump”. It’s very unfair to say he’s been “struggling”.

i fail to see how a contract complicates anything given a TLR lineup

he had no problem running out the other Boras client into left field

more like the acquisition was billed as protection in the 4-spot, so it invites scrutiny as to why he’s being moved around. the perception from the size of the contract, belike.

Once again, sources stated, Ortiz only gets paid to hit. Just hit. Nothing else.
So those familiar with the Red Sox organization are completely clear, baseball insiders said, the Dodgers’ Andre Ethier is leading the NL with a .385 batting average, has 37 RBIs, and is second in the majors with 11 home runs. It also bears mentioning, they continued, that he plays a position in the outfield, is a 2009 Silver Slugger Award winner, writes the food blog Dining With ‘Dre, and does all of this for $7.25 million per year less than David Ortiz.
Sources also confirmed that Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun is right behind Ethier, hitting .359 with 28 RBIs, for only $1.3 million, if you can see where sources are going with that.
