well from what we've seen from Cincy fans tonight, at least the ones at the ballpark,
all I can say is that they’re astoundingly shitty. You’re perennially lackluster team is finally playing well and you go out of your way to boo minor miscues…? Really?
They're half a game out of first and there are a lot of empty seats there.

i’m sure they diss our players and histrionics as much as we diss others’ in threads, so i could see a cards fan taking offense

I don't think we hate VEB
I personally have often stopped by this site, especially in the off season, for quality baseball information. I feel like VEB as well as RR does an excellent job of using advanced statistics to analyze baseball. Furthermore I feel like in your analysis your guys tend to be objective and overly bias towards the Cardinals. This is probably my favorite SBN blog to read outside of RR, we probably hate the Cardinals, but I don’t think we hate you.
We do get tired of TLR complaining about the quality of baseballs, but that is directed at TLR, and I am pretty sure we aren’t the only fanbase that dislikes him.
I hate Dusty Baker so goddamn much.

To be fair...
When you live in the middle of Cardinal country and you’re the fan of a losing team, and you constantly get that rubbed in your face, you tend to get a pretty strong dislike of that team. So, yeah, I hate the Cardinals. Nothing against VEB though.

To be fair...
who else would you want in there in the 9th, to get multiple outs, vs. left handers, and right handers?
I think Franklin is our best bet, honestly. He might have some shaky 9th innings, but….unless you have a Mariano floating around, which team doesn’t?
is it just me
or does it feel like we lost that game EVEN THOUGH WE WON?

But it was still 14-3 when he came in?
Unless they count it as him coming in when the starter was pinch-hit for in the top of the inning? Odd.

That rule states the official scorer shall credit a pitcher with a save when such pitcher meets all four of the following conditions:
1. He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his team;
2. He is not the winning pitcher;
3. He is credited with at least ⅓ of an inning pitched; and
4. He satisfies one of the following conditions:
1. He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning
2. He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, at bat or on deck
3. He pitches for at least three innings

Man..
Moyer cruising toward win number 263. He says he wants 300 and I bet he gets it. I remember when he was with the Cards in ’92. He was 30 years old, had 34 career wins, and his arm was blown out.

the Ned Yost era in Kansas City is off to a roaring start. They’re winning 6-1 in the 8th of a game that featured Mark Buehrle vs Gil Meche. Betancourt even homered. Off Buehrle, no less.
what's hilarious about this
is that everyone in KC is going to immediately jump on the Yost bandwagon if he wins his first game like this. And it’s not like Hillman was the root of the problem in KC….
Well...
Hillman did make some managerial moves that make TLR and Dusty Baker’s worst moves look intelligent.
Why is Betancourt making 3 million?
Can I get signed to play for KC?
>Pitcher Change: Felipe Lopez replaces Ryan Franklin, batting 7th, replacing third baseman Felipe Lopez
Stavinoha/Jay/Mather hitting with a runner on first and no outs...
or Mitch F. Boggs bunting. Hmm… do you really have to be a stat geek to figure out which is more likely to lead to runs?
Franklin !#@$!&*%#
Nope. You really don't.
I think he stops thinking about scoring more runs at a certain point. It’s awfully narrow-minded.
You can read it in any tone you like.
drives me nuts
he’s so conservative he’s avant garde.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I actually liked the move.
TLR has been burned before by running out of pinch hitters, and if Boggs gets the bunt down, then you have a couple of outs to bring the guy on second home. Do that, and then you can leave Boggs in to pitch to the RH batter leading off the 9th, with Reyes against the lefty, after which the whole inning looks more secure.
There’s some results mongering here.

you don't think franklin was coming in no matter what?
and tony had his full bench available, did he not? it was the ninth, so what’s he saving them for?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Exactly.
With a two-run lead, there’s no need to play for the possibility that at some point in the evening you may exhaust your bench.
You can read it in any tone you like.
haha
sounds like we agree on something. i’d love to hear tony try to say he was going to leave boggs in to start the ninth…

Though I was rather surprised that Leach didn’t Tweet about it.

some of the best questions are never asked
really, i even had to write down on paper trying to figure out some rationale on this one.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Nope. There isn't.
I’m not a big fan of the bunt in general, but this is what pinch-hitters are for. I don’t think Tony had any intention of leaving Boggs in to pitch.
You can read it in any tone you like.
I'm not remotely trying to stick up for Hillman
but David Glass still runs the team, and Dayton Moore is still the GM.
At least lately, Glass has been willing to spend.
Maybe the money hasn’t been spent on the ideal working parts, but KC’s payroll isn’t the total joke that some teams’ are working with. And if there are players worth spending even more money on, he’s been said to be willing to spend it.
I’ll lay a large part of the blame at the feet of Moore and Hillman, though.
Glass gave Moore an extension til 2014
nuff said
They have increased their payroll….b/c they’ve done stuff like sign Ankiel and Podsednik.

>Pitcher Change: Felipe Lopez replaces Ryan Franklin, batting 7th, replacing third baseman Felipe Lopez

tainted only by a ball back at him that he knocked down and the runner beat it by a toe at first.

Not taking anything away from Latos, he was remarkable, but…

Al Yellon, no longer on the Z-in-the-bullpen bandwagon:
Let’s start here — it’s time for the Zambrano-to-the-bullpen experiment to end. There, I said it. At the time it was done I thought it might work, to solidify a bullpen that couldn’t get anyone out. But after today, when Z himself could barely get anyone out and looked like he would rather be just about anywhere in the solar system other than the Wrigley Field mound, it’s time for Lou to declare this experiment over — even though Lou said in his postgame remarks that Z is going to remain the “eighth-inning guy”.
Really, Lou? Really? How’d today’s 8th inning work out for you?
I think Z got clobbered because he hates being the bullpen
…when you dont like what your doing you lose focus and passion and its pretty evident that Z has lost both.
by JB 23 on May 14, 2010 5:56 PM CDT
I think this is very plausible.
It shouldn’t necessarily be that way — but that’s human nature when you are put into a situation you don’t care for.
Think about your own work — have any of you been put in an assignment you didn’t want? Or get screwed out of one you DID? What was your attitude like then?
No different for $18 million a year athletes. They’re still people.

i don't see him giving up millions
i don’t think lou gives a fuck at this point. he probably wouldn’t mind being fired, and getting paid.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
He left money on the table at Tampa, though.
Who know what the circumstances were behind closed doors, though.

he was going to manage elsewhere though
i don’t know if he plans to anymore.

I've gotta stop using "though" so much.
And true about Sweet Lou. I hadn’t considered that.

i don't even know how i would adjust to big z being a cardinal
i’m still trying to deal with holliday, just because of nervousness about the contract.
encouraging – boog in the field, and his last at-bat. maybe they are handling things with him well.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I'd only accept Z if Carp were still there. and dunc.

So, how'd big Z do?
Stat – 2010 – Career
K/9 – 10.67 – 7.73
BB/9 – 4.00 – 4.05
HR/9 – 1.33 – 0.74
BABIP – .428 – .283
FIP – 4.09 – 3.95
xFIP – 3.42 – 4.09
OK, so what’s he doing wrong here? Giving up moar dingers, sure. Striking out a bunch. Batted balls finding grass instead of gloves. What else? Help me out, VEB.

no doubt he's still a capable pitcher
that’s not the problem, as far as envisioning him a cardinal

Yeah, that's what I was thinking just looking at the numbers
but damn, that is some seriously shitty luck.

ray liotta in the booth with dick enberg in san diego
pads vs. dodgers sold out all weekend. good to see them supported.

a reminder from the GOBs
that they’re still there. they brought our joy into the world and they don’t mind taking it back out.

that is a veritable tsunami of heart's blood.
"We were men - flesh and blood - and we played baseball in the sunshine. We hit doubles off the wall, slid hard into second base. We had fights, and we made love. We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives." Buck O'Neil, from "The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O'Neil's America."
I will pretend CJ Beatty just tweeted that.

ethier hitting over .390 now
believe he’s followed by braun, then werth
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
they shifted eck as if he's a lefty pull hitter
he’d doubled down the right field line last at bat. so he pulls one to left for a single.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
eck takes out 2b to prevent dp
so run scores from third, 3-2 pads.

he doesn't have an N
just remember he has two L’s per W

7.1 innings, 2 runs on 5 hits. Pretty damn good outing, even if it is against the Astros. Er…right….those Astros.
for some reason I thought they sent him to the bullpen

He was in the pen for 2 weeks or so
when they went to 4-man rotation due to having a ton of off-days. Just to keep him fresh, rather than not pitching him at all for a few weeks.
he's their ace?

i'd almost be willing to bet miles never plays for the cards
he may play for another mlb team, though.
gregerson gives up the lead with a dinger. but eck gets his third hit, trying to pick him up.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I like Eck and all...
but I don’t understand how he gets significant playing time. I don’t see the value in someone whose ceiling is about .675 OPS. Yes, that’s higher than Skip and Boog at the moment…but I think the two of them are both .750+ OPS quality players, with superior defense, in Boog’s case, at least.
eck is .705 for his career
he plays second now, so defensively you’d have to compare him to schu.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
i don't see any room for him
but i could see the org giving him a spot to play in AA to stay in the game – maybe something opens up somewhere else.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
skip is pretty much written in stone starting at second, at least the big-end
boog or greene will be the starter at short, imo, and lopex will pretty much be getting regular playing time while not being considered a starter. i don’t think anything has changed since opening day, except maybe the boog/greene competition.
