Yesterday I said it was hitting day
and we hit. Unfortunately, I forgot to specify anything about pitching.

I would say it's pitching day
but Carp doesn’t give a fuck about my superstitions.
babip giveth... and babip taketh away
being specific
that is the key

Carp Isn't Ready...
…to give up the ACE designation for the club just yet – he’ll shut down the ’stros for at least 7. I just hope we can muster a couple of runs for him…

Lance Berkman owes Cardinal pitching a fruit basket or something cause he’s hitting all of a sudden.

At the game
Just watched Puma continue to remind us that he’s a better 1b ten Ryan Howard by robbing shoeless corky (Colby smash) and a video came on the board talking about the ’99 rams despite being a cheesehead I enjoyed and remeber that year for the Rams. This led to a discussion about how the greatest St Louis sports moments in the last 20 years were pre-season injuries(Bonilla and Green). I wish the Blues had a preseason injury like that almost as much as I wish we could hit Bud F. Norris

I don't understand
How he was upset by an out? If Lee had tagged him, that’s one thing, but he got an out. All it does is fire guys up — on both sides, yes but the Astros had first crack. All he did was wake everyone up and spend some time waiting for things to cool down.
read above.
Lee said he should’ve hit it out i.e. it was a crap pitch.
we’re live-blogging for a reason.
Lick that shoulder—you're in the doghouse now.
"But listen, and understand: more Molinas are out there..." - THT
I know WHY he got mad
I just don’t understand it. He’s a grown man. Control your emotions. Who cares if Lee got pissed, that happens all the time with hitters. Shut your mouth and get the next guy out.
you can ask him
he yells all the time. he has always yelled, and has never been warned because it’s clear he’s just in the zone and not actually threatening the other players.
if you have a problem with it now, you have a problem with Chris Carpenter’s career.
Lick that shoulder—you're in the doghouse now.
"But listen, and understand: more Molinas are out there..." - THT
Well sometimes,
you yell to get yourself fired up. You want to let your teammates know you are in this game and ready to compete. Messing with the rival, especially in a contact sport is a good strategy when you can handle it. I tell you because I am a goalkeeper in soccer. And usually, messing with the other team makes them lose it, not you.
Today, Carp messed with Lee and couldn’t handle it.
I want the Walrus back...
...I don't think this is some kind of game strategy.
I just don’t know how this is a sign that Carp should grow up. yeah, he knows when he crosses the line — he acknowledges it. but talking about Carp like he’s some recalcitrant child shows some disconnect from, uh, Carpenter’s actual starts over the last decade.
Lick that shoulder—you're in the doghouse now.
"But listen, and understand: more Molinas are out there..." - THT
All I have to say is
that if you are going to do this, as Carp has done it, make sure you can handle it. Today, he clearly didn’t.
I want the Walrus back...

This Norris guy

I tell you what this is great for studying...
I think oh shit I’m gonna get into the game and not study. Well very promptly(usually in the first few innings) the cards have given me good reason to get back to work. Well whatever, last final ever tomorrow! WOOHOO
as someone who just finished his comprehensive exams and passed the defense
congrats! i know how it feels to be able to say, “last exams ever”
I just don't see this team
beating the Reds this upcoming series. We might see ourselves dropping to second by this weekend…
I want the Walrus back...

you know...
there are ways to forget about games like this. One trick is to tell stories that don’t go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m’shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt. Which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ‘em. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you’d say. Now where was I… oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt, which was the style at the time. You couldn’t get white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones…

RISP

Non RISP

He most certainly is taking more walks with runners on. You would think that would mean he was being more selective with RISP. Yet his BAbip is .189! with RISP compared to a total of .337
Not sure if the balls he is putting in are because he is putting pitches out of the zone into play which leads to pop-ups and or weak grounders. Anything else you would think it’s just a lot of bad luck.

Wait a second...
Did we just get swept by the ASTROS? Hahaha. Oh man. I’m going to be so drunk this weekend.
I understand that it is only May...
And I understand that the Cardinals are still in first place (for now).
But that shithole of a performance is the type of thing that keeps you out of the playoffs.
You absolutely can not get swept by what is far and away the worst team in the National League, at home no less.
I’m hard-pressed to even throw this one in the “any given day in baseball” category.
Just gross.
We had two 8-game losing streaks in 2006.
’06 Cards were swept by:
Tigers
Cubs (x2)
Indians
Reds
Pirates
Phillies
Mets
Diamondbacks
Astros (4-game sweep)
Some of those were at home, to boot.
And I guess you already forgot about last year’s schulacking at that hands of the Rockies in STL?
It’s a long season

First of all...
WS champions or not, I really hope the ’06 team is not the standard to which we compare this team.
Second, I mentioned the Colorado series earlier, but they were a playoff team, not a team on its way to 100 losses.
That said...
IIRC, the Rockies did have the worst record in the NL at the time.
But still, they were obviously much, much better than that.
These Astros are what they are, and that is terrible.
I just don't know what to think about all this.
the year the Cards were a pretty mediocre team they won the WS.
In 2004/2005 when they were mostly awesome they still went flat towards the end of the year and we all tried not to worry and said “they just need something to play for” and it didn’t work out.
Maybe this all part of Tony’s grand scheme. Let them play crummy in May so they can catch fire later in the year. I don’t know. I don’t see LaRussa ever being willing to lose a game no matter what the reward would be at the end.
Maybe it’s just the GOBs are upset. Maybe it’s because there are only 3 letters in the word “May”? Maybe it’s because LaRue shaved his mustache?

it was the only "highlight" on a game that was really big for the Giants.
The clip, which was first publicly criticized by beat writer Henry Schulman, showed [Bengie] Molina running in slow-motion while the "Chariots of Fire" theme played.
Molina — an 11-year pro’s pro who doesn’t exactly have the build of a modern-type catcher like Joe Mauer — is upset for a couple of reasons.
For one, his mother saw it and was upset once his brother Yadier explained to her what was being said.
For another, it was the only play shown from a Giants victory that, at the time, gave them the best record in the National League.
That’s from BLS.
+
“In that Marlins game, which we won, Nate Schierholtz went three-for-three with his first home run of the season. Matt Cain pitched six innings of no-hit ball. And the one highlight ESPN shows of that game is me getting thrown out at home? And they’re doing it just for laughs?
this guy nails it. they can be playing the best baseball on the planet, and FESPN will focus on how they’re fat-asses. why the fuck shouldn’t we be pissed off? they can do it to any team not named the Red Sox or Yankees.

Y'all are probably going to laugh, but.....
Watch out for Auburn next year. We’ve got a heck of a new coach who’s already pulled in two top prospects in this recruiting class. We’re not returning too much, but having a coach with a strategy other than “shoot the 3” will make a huge difference. We may not make the Dance next year, but count on the year after or the year after that.

I’ve been trying to get some footage of Berkman and I made a stupid wish that he’d finally freaking do something this time — since he hasn’t done anything up to this point for maybe the 10 Astros games I’ve gone to — but I decide to go to all three games and now I’ve got all this great footage of Berkman but I also had to sit through 3 Astros wins and not only did I have to sit through those games but everyone else did and now I’m just wishing I had just gone with the flow.

he hung a pitch that lee should’ve put in the seats, so of course lee’s upset. every card hitter reacts the same on that. had carp made a great pitch that the batter acted like he should’ve done something with, then it goes the other way. i think that’s pretty standard practice.

I began by comparing Freese in '10
to Scott Rolen’s first full season. sounds reasonable to me. Freese has a higher wOBA right now (not that he will be higher than Rolen’s .372 in ‘97, but I think it is entirely possible. also Freese’s D has been pretty solid this year, if not as flashy and over the top as Rolen’s D

I just meant that he is of a similar build, is probably a very comparable hitter, but probably not quite as good at defense. you should google csontvary. i just hipped this art professor in new orleans to him – couldn’t believe he didn’t know him. his paintings aren’t available, which is part of the reason. i spent some time in hungary acquiring art from the early 20th century to be sold in new york. didn’t discover csontvary till then, but he has his own museum and art books available – my second favorite painter.

his story is very analogous to van gogh, but perhaps crazier. he was about 40 when he “heard a voice” telling him to become the greatest painter ever, and so set out to visit musuems and learn to paint, down through italy from hungary, and then croatia, lebanon and all those places. he never got involved with anyone, thought painting 24/7. died alone, of poverty.

which is why i didn’t want to sign crede or figgins or any of those. i use zeile as more of a comp than rolen is all, bat-wise, and think he could be nearly or as good as reitz with the mitt. i do not envision freezer ever being an mvp candidate, though.

i tried to use the easiest comparison people would know. to me zeile means .280 avg, 20 homers, 80 rbi’s, though that’s just how i think of zeile, so those numbers could be way off.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
The counting stats are nice
but I’d like to see a ops higer than .770
Asshattery: it's an epidemic.

wow
Zeile’s home run totals were all over the map during his career, he ranged from under ten a lot of years, to 31 in ‘97 with the Dodgers. I didn’t remember him ever hitting that many.
I guess what I took issue with, is that Zeile was a lower average hitter than what Freese’s number point to, which is more like a .300 or greater average hitter (Zeile was a career .265 hitter). also, Freese appears to have a better eye and will take more walks

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I stand by my Freese/Rolen comparison
it’s not as if Rolen is a super great hitter. Freese will be comparable at hitting, if not better, imo. and his defense is still developing… of course he will not be on of the best defensive third basemen like Rolen is, but he can hold his own. that’s why I think they are similar, and like I said before, they are of a similar build, so I don’t see why he is more like a todd zeile and not closer to a rolen type player.

alright, i'll look up stats for rolen's peak years

Somebody estimate innings pitched for me given these 7 components:
K%, BB%, HBP%, HR%, 1B%, 2B%, 3B% – all % of total plate appearances.
I need something that can take those 7 stats, put in a random plate appearance number and estimate innings pitched while also accounting for the difference in K rates.
so, like
you wanna be able to take a K rate, and what, be able to tell by the number of Ks how many IP?

it's great drunk food
not the best pizza around by any means, but it’s definitely a cheap, filling meal if you are running low on cash

The town I grew up in had
a bar / chicken shack. You could get a beer and a 4 piece chicken for $3.75 (Went up to $4.25 last year.) I ate there quite a bit in leaner times. Crappy thing is, I moved 60 miles away, and the same meal in the same kind of place is $12 here.
Asshattery: it's an epidemic.
Also, Dave Concepcion.
Chicago is no where near as expensive as people think it is
unless you live in the neighborhoods that are overpriced

Adonis Cardona?
did his parents not know what that meant, or did they have a really high opinion of his looks?

so, page is turning around the MLB... I was wondering about rookies
who’s going to make the biggest difference for a team, from among the rookies and call-ups around the league? i.e. who could bite us in the butt? Davis, Heyward, Strasburg? the various wildcards around the NL Central… let’s just throw Leake in there. who are you seeing in your nightmares?

cause us problems
i don’t see anyone. but i think jaime could be overshadowed pitching-wise by strasburg, and while it’s debated which was more deserving of ROY, heyward walks away with it.

What?

speaking of homer bailey recently
someone noted that his brilliant end to last season was aided by pitching against the pirates 4 times. in that stretch, he actually had a lower era against other teams, though he wasn’t racking up wins. from red reporter:
“Last season Bailey had a brilliant run to end the season, going 6-1 with a 1.70 ERA in his final nine starts of the season. Four of those starts were against Pittsburgh, with him going 4-0 with a 2.13 ERA against the Pirates.”
