He can't hit a HR to save his life
/GOB
In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

This fox trax is distracting
and I have no idea how to contextualize 16" of break. . .
Think; It's not illegal yet.
16" of break
is the equivalence of saying, “My fastball goes 76 leagues per lunar month.” I have no idea what that means relative to the rest of the sample population or if it’s good/bad.

That was a quick death for Holliday.

It's all because of Lohse.
Definitely the worst pitcher on this team, all this game did was prove that again. I don’t see why you don’t get his ass down to Memphis. Let’s get Boggs or McClellan in the rotation, anybody but Lohse.

Lohse is not one our best starters.
Instead of basically ensuring a loss every time he pitches, let’s go experiment with somebody like Boggs or McClellan to at least give us a chance at winning.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I don't care about numbers in the past.
Kyle Lohse isn’t pitching well right now, that’s a fact. It’s time to at least explore some other options until he can figure out what he’s doing on the mound.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
he's effectively our 5th starter
and he’s fine for a 5th starter right now (except his paycheck of course). Almost every team in the league is in the same position with the 5th spot in the rotation. You expect some runs, hope he can go 6 and keep you in the game, and then depend on your offense to ultimately win the game. For the most part, Lohse has done that.

pitch for pitch, and think he didn’t have terrible luck. a ball fell in center because of where colby was, a ball fell in front of holliday because he misread it, and howard dinked a ball thru for two unearned runs because we shift differently. a ball thru freeze’s legs, a throw apu muffed from short, and a wind-blown homer with 2 outs and 2 strikes on an excellent pitch to werth…guys can get frustrated. funny everyone gives boog a break for it, but the guy whose frustration he caused tonite gets no slack.

more walks and hits

because of a bogus HR rate
He’s generating the lowest GB% since 2003 and the worst K:BB ratio since 2004. He’s not pitching well; all the peripherals are headed in the wrong direction.
Think; It's not illegal yet.
So for once, we should trust
ESPN-ish stats and not sabermetrics? I agree with you, he is struggling. It is the same case made yesterday about Penny. I know it is frustrating when errors are made behind you, but you have to bear down and get those outs. Cannot say he pitched well but had bad defense behind him when he gives up 10+ hits
I want the Walrus back...
ick no.
I think they eyes have it with this kind of a sample size. Lohse isn’t hitting spots and his peripherals are down. If someone really wants a stat to look at right now, I’d go with xFIP or tRA* to take out some of luck Lohse has had.
Think; It's not illegal yet.
those would be the worst stats to look at
not only do they include all the noise that come with any stats, but they include extra batted ball classification noise
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
by prophetjohn on May 12, 2010 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Have you been watching Lohse?
He looks terrible. The only reason you can quote his HR is because balls haven’t gone for homeruns. From what I’ve seen, that’s completely luck and not at all a function of how he’s pitching right now.
Think; It's not illegal yet.
I must admit
he did look pretty bad tonight. but he wouldn’t have had THAT bad an outing if it weren’t for some errors. he definitely needs to hit the reset button and figure out what he is doing wrong though
he is a bit eccentric
by Cards Fan in Chitown on May 12, 2010 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions
He simply looks flat
and control-lacking. He had said something about problems with his delivery after that one good outing he had.
I want the Walrus back...
well, against philly he was certainly unlucky
and another two errors that game. i won’t see tonight’s game till a bit later, so i can’t say.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
i wasn't able to watch him tonight
he was bad in philly and arizona. the other nights he’s looked good. even better than the QS status would imply. his first start his season would be a good example of him hitting his spots and not getting calls
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
by prophetjohn on May 12, 2010 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions
His command has been spotty.
Fewer first pitch strikes, fewer swinging strikes, fewer groundballs. . . it’s not just one peripheral in the wrong direction, it’s a bunch.
I’ve been an ardent defender of Lohse. I still think he belongs in the rotation. I still think the contract was defensible at the time. But he looked disengaged tonight and I don’t think he’s got everything worked out right now.
Think; It's not illegal yet.
like i said, i wasn't able to watch him tonight
might have a different opinion if i had. but in all his other starts, i haven’t seen a whole lot that makes me panicky about a 5th starter. or even a third starter. i imagine he’ll come around and end up average or better by the end of the year. which is worth the contract. not a bargain, just plain market value
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."

a wind-blown homer in philly and one off the foul pole (according to shannon) tonite. the bomb off jaime by utley went foul on review. also, an understanding of positioning is also helpful. basically, if you do not watch a game, and only look at numbers, you can be very deceived. you have to match them up to understand.

hitters league, MLEs still don't look great
didn’t have a spot here (but you can always at least try to stick someone in LF, right?). I dunno, its just way too early to judge and realsitically it doesn’t seem like the FO saw him the Cardinals future, so they did what they did.
they did
it was safer, for sure. it would have been bold to put walrus and craig in left, and mo is not known to be bold. that could get him fired, but ownership had to sign off on holliday, and that absolves him right there.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
also, i wish that overbay would hit enough to trade him
by the time we play toronto, so we could see walrus. he’s basically just waiting on this to happen. dude can rake.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Actually,
I read an article saying that the FO will not rush him. The plan is for Wallace to stay in Vegas the entire year since they think Overbay will bounce back. So, his ETA will probably be 2011, barring an injury or freak accident.
I want the Walrus back...
it wouldn't be rushing him
that’s FO speak there. they need to get something for overbay, and just hope he hits enough to bring back some value in a trade. at a point, if it doesn’t happen, i suspect they’d just cut him and bring the walrus up.

I have no idea what is going on with the O. Even Albert looks lost. In his case, I would have his eyes checked. Seriously. He is misjudging pitches AND throws. He’s just not seeing it well at all. They are doing everything that Mac is telling them not to do. Some of it is just luck. They are hitting the ball right at people. But they are swinging at some awful pitches too.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
As an individual stat yes.
But he has gotten no run support in a couple of games, and for him that may start playing on him psychologically. Pitchers need wins to feel validated.

and you can't just overlook 11 unearned runs
attributed to boog in less than a two-game span. iirc, there were 2 in the ninth against the pirates, then 4 yesterday, then 5 today, and that’s in less than an 18-inning span. um, that’s incredible.

I’m not absolving him of anything. But Lohse is the weakest link in the rotation and he’s not even a Suppan-esque innings eater. I’d rather go bullpen game with Boggs and Hawk both throwing 3 innings every 5th day than watch Lohse pitch another game.

this refers to this:
he has been healthy this year again, and pretty much the same pitcher.

ok
we have what we have for sample size this year, but he’s still the same pitcher. why would one automatically think otherwise?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
of course he's the same pitcher

well, to each his own
but lohse would go longer into games without all the errors and such that cause the pitch count to go up. he has had terrible luck with this shit in a SSS. everyone has the right to want to see who they want play, but i’ll go with the best option each day.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
last year was about a lot of freak injuries for Lohse
that’s why I’m not paying too much attention to his stats last season. once he gets into his routine, he will do well and pitch 6 or 7 innings a start and stay healthy. I just don’t think he’s gotten into his rhythm yet. same can be said for Holliday.

well that
and, y’know, seems a little extreme to cut or demote a player who has been 2-3 WAR his whole career. he’ll be fine

Just that it is the only way he’d have value to this team. AND WE STILL OWE HIM $23 M over the next 2 years!!!!

completely agree. three guys in the bullpen could start right now and be more effective than lohse.

yeah. pretty much. because most of the time i’m too lazy to draw it out and it’s not like it matters.
i’ll never do that in a real baseball discussion though.

People keep throwing around his FIP
being better than Carp’s, which is only so because of the overvaluing of HRs and the fact that Carp has been tattoo’d on them early in the year. If you normalize HRs, Lohse actually is pretty terrible.
If you take a look at his xFIP, which devalues the HR rate, he’s only slightly better then 3 pitchers from this year:
- Dennys Reyes
- Joe Mather
- Felipe Lopez

you can play with numbers
but, in watching his pitches, what is it you are seeing, exactly?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
missing location, for one
others with more Pf/x experience should be able to tell you more about how his “stuff” has looked, and I’d be surprised if it didn’t look pretty poor.
haven't watched tonite yet
but in the philly start, he threw pretty well. i don’t need pitch f/x for that. there was a lot going on, certainly, and it affected him somewhat, but he threw pretty well.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
well, I think pf/x would be useful in terms of going back to one of
his hot streaks in 2008 and then comparing that to what his stuff looks like now. What’s the diff?
first inning could not be sharper
very impressive. one UIBB to berkman with 2 outs no one on. down, down in the zone. crisp.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
second inning the same
great stuff. the error effectively pitched around.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
stav's first ab - lol
boog – not laughing.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
third inning sharp again, though wandy got a hit and scored
bourn hit a little grounder that apu might normally get, but just missed and came up holding his leg, a little gimpy. great change to berkman for strike 2, but didn’t get a call on fastball next pitch, and walked him again on a check-swing full-count. obvious game plan – don’t let berkman do damage. lee hit a sac fly on a good pitch, and another good pitch ended the inning. so far so good.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
the fatal inning
feliz leads off. fastball on 3-1 left up. single.
quintero. 2-1 count. great pitch, broken bat. error at short.
manzella. fouls off 1-2. k’s on 2-2 low sinker.
rodriguez. bunt. out at 3rd. 2 outs.
bourn. 1-2, fouled off, another good pitch down, single to center, bases loaded.
keppinger. left a ball up, hits one down the line out of reach of freeze. clears the bases. then berkman hits the pole on a mislocated pitch down and in on first pitch.
end of commentary. he made probably 3 bad pitches in the game to this point, all in one inning, paid for them all. after watching, i put a little more on boog than i did before. thru 4 lohse threw very well. keppinger’s ball couldn’t have been placed any better – if it was us batting, it was a softish liner to third.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
btw, lohse's control was very good
the walks are deceiving, since it was the game plan to pitch around berkman, and i believe he drew every walk, or maybe someone came in and walked the batter when lohse was at 1-0 i the count, which gets charged to lohse. in any event, berkman drew 4 walks.
also, shame on tony batting lohse and sending him back out in that game, but at least he realized it and acknowledged such by coming out after 1 pitch to a batter – a lot of managers wouldn’t make that statement.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
let's say he ends up with his 4.77 xFIP as his year end ERA
not that bad for a fifth starter as long as he pitches a lot of innings, I’d be happy with that

another take on a game:
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
recap...ryans error
i wasnt able to catch the game tonight except the cards 9th on the radio
but the guy who recapped the game on crawfishboxes said Feliz’s hit, and the errror by Ryan resulted in runs in the 4th…is incorrect it was the 2nd and no runs scored
I’d like to see the error in the 4th by Ryan, but i havent come across any vid
also after reading this thread and the standard Lohse bashing….i think our middle infield is more of a concern than lohse as a our weak link

boog's second error "led" to 5 unearned in the fourth
his first error in the second inning was not a factor in the score.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
these threads would be a lot easier to read if people making contrarian statements would back them up right away
instead of dropping them there for us to stare at.
