Around SBN: Ohio State And Florida Target 2013 Receiver Recruits

Much better than the previous thread overflow thread

Recap: The Cardinals lost, and it sucked. Brad Penny pitched well then didn't, Brendan Ryan made some errors, Jason Motte gave up some home runs. They are not as bad as they were tonight; the Astros are not as bad as they've been all year, though this year they aren't very good. Eventually there will be another good streak, and we will all once again believe that Brad Penny is invincible, Brendan Ryan is on the comeback trail, and Jason Motte has finally begin to pitch like he did in Memphis. The end result of all these good and bad streaks, I am still convinced, will be first place in the NL Central.

Here is a picture of Albert Pujols hitting a home run.

I wear this avatar with heavy irony.

I’ve lived in 7 states, and it really is amazing how Texans regard Texas vs. how everyone else regards their state. The silhouette of the state is seen on nearly every structure, vehicle, sidewalk, and small child.

But I do enjoy living here overall. I think a lot of people who haven’t been here think it’s a lot like the ‘other former confederate states’… when in reality Missouri is more southern than Texas nowadays. I suppose you could find a decent amount of rednecks outside the cities (or in Dallas-Fort Worth…), but Houston/Austin/San Antonio are completely different. Houston has an openly lesbian mayor, Austin has more hippies per capita than anywhere else I’ve ever been, and San Antonio is over 50% hispanic (no hablo espanol? good luck finding a job!).

Some days I hate it (fuck you and your Texas door knocker), other days I love it (our governor shot a coyote on his jog last week), and sometimes I just wish it wasn’t 110 degrees.

The fanbase demanded protection for Albert, and of course that means a high priced slugger type, and Albert wanted to be shown that the team was committed to putting a winning team together.

Not with Colby in center

and Boog there to help out whomever got put in left. If they were going to go get a left fielder, I really wanted DeJesus. Solid player that wouldn’t have cost us nearly as much to pry away. I hope the fanbase enjoys the next 7 yrs 4 mos and 19 days of Holliday’s contract, because now we’re stuck with it.

i guess i'm circumspect because the holliday deal

by cardball on May 12, 2010 3:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Honestly, I hope I'm wrong about Holliday.

I want it to work out well, I really do. I just think we could’ve gone a different route and been as well or better off than we are. I know why we went after Holliday beyond what I mentioned. Luddy really wasn’t hitting last year and Colby wasn’t doing well at all. And they developed a “win now” mentality, while Carp was pitching like he was, but I will forever think that it was an unwise move in what we gave/are giving up.

yep.

Funny thing is that AP and Holliday combined to hit exactly one HR from Sept 7 or 9th(I don’t remember which one) up thru the NLDS. Holliday hit that one in Game 2. So it’s not like this season is all that isolated for those two. I would stay as far away from Boras as possible actually. Unless it was a player we just couldn’t live without, I would pass just because of him.

I lobbied hard for the Cardinals to get

Josh Willingham. Would’ve cost a lot less to re-sign, and there’s a (very slim) chance we could have got him without giving up Wallace. Willingham’s 2010 line (.400 wOBA, .400 OBP, 20 RBI) is better than Holliday ‘s in just about every category, and he’s making a lot less.

at least Brendan Ryan does not have Mark DeRosa's problems

or for that matter, Joe Mather doesn’t have his problems.

A brutally honest Mark DeRosa said Tuesday that the left wrist surgery he underwent last year was a “total failure” and will remain out of the Giants’ lineup for at least a couple of days to determine his next course of action.
DeRosa, 35, underwent an examination and tests earlier in the day and said that the ligaments in his wrist were “flapping all over the place again.” But his more immediate concern is numbness in the ring and pinky fingers of his left hand, which prevent him from swinging the bat effectively.
linki. what did DeRo do to anger the GOB? it’s always against his former and current teams. if they have interleague with the Indians, I’d be worried.

I'm sure someone else has

remarked on this but I don’t have time to scroll through all the game threads. But as expected this morning’s PD article focuses its attention on Brendan as the guy who started the unraveling last night. And it’s true, I guess, he did with his error. But in the same article Penny gets portrayed as something like a victim? The Brad Penny who, with a 2-run lead, one out, and one measly runner on 1st (hardly a panic situation), then gave up 4 hits and hit a batter IN THE SPACE OF 8 PITCHES. Was he just grooving his pitches to all those guys to punish his teammates? Geez. Seems to me the real unraveling was on the mound, not at SS.

by MdRedbirdFreak on May 12, 2010 9:57 AM EDT reply actions

who wrote the article

and I agree. the pitchers can’t go to pieces over a couple of errors.

otherwise, though, in the season he’s had hard luck — second worst run support in the majors. so over time, yeah I can see that. in the game? yeah, that was on the big dude.

Albert Pujols, Boogfan
"I blame myself on the second error because I should have had a pretty good opportunity to pick that ball," Pujols said. "That’s a ball right there that you throw out of 100 and I probably pick it up about 95, 97 times. I kind of blame myself more on that one. Yes he had the time and you can point to that, but still, he’s not perfect. He’s not going to throw it to me all the time right in the chest. For me to be a Gold Glove, I need to make those plays.

"It’s going to happen. If there’s a major league player that played this game and said they never made an error, they are a liar. You never played if you never made an error. Stuff like that is going to happen. I will put him out there anytime against any shortstop. He’s going to make that play all the time. Sometimes it just happens."

the GoodStalker arrives with a 10@10

boom

The Cardinals’ shortstop will throw over-the-top when needed. For example, on a jump throw or play to his right, Ryan will throw closer to over the top. Ryan has a reason for keeping the sidearm-sling as part of his game. His thinking is that if he throws over the top he’ll miss on a vertical axis — a bad throw will be too high or too low and either one is likely to sail or skip past Pujols. By slinging the ball from the side Ryan said he’ll only miss on a horizontal axis. As long as he aims at the birds and letters on Pujols’ chest the horizontal miss is usually a smaller window and rarely veers outside of Pujols’ reach. He’s thought this out.

On blaming the lack of ’stache:

Ryan did sport the "Respect the ‘Stache" t-shirt before Tuesday’s game. Plus, he was named this week to the prestigious 1st-Team All-Mustache lineup over at Batting Stance Guy.

Sadly Goold did not link to Boog totally beating out the Batting Stance Guy at his own schtick.

Who nailed the boog?

"I don't like to sound egotistical, but every time I stepped up to the plate with a bat in my hands, I couldn't help but feel sorry for the pitcher." Rogers hornsby.

If anyone is knowledgeable about the Quad Cities team

I’m interested in opinions on how the A-ball is going… what is up with Robert Stock? Is Fornataro as perfect of a Duncan-esque pitcher as he seems to be on paper?

Anything else interesting besides Shelby Miller striking out 2 batters/inning (HFS)?

This is correct...

I just love it when QC comes into town.

i wonder if we should keep a calendar

of the games with who’s going to what game so if ppl want to meet they can make arrangements
or if there’s a rain delay they can go have a beer together or sth..
can we do that?
