gah! this game suddenly got interesting.

"We were men - flesh and blood - and we played baseball in the sunshine. We hit doubles off the wall, slid hard into second base. We had fights, and we made love. We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives." in fairness

at a certain point it reverts to the pitcher. a guy make an error, the runs thereafter are unearned, but if you give up five straight homers, some of that you have to own.

OT, because I want to be pissed about something other than the Cards:

so is Lebron just the game’s “greatest player” by default? because he sure doesn’t seem too interested in doing anything noteworthy this series. And I don’t buy that an injury is really handicapping him this much. He’s hardly even trying to get to the rim, which he can always do. He’s eagerly giving the ball up to to Varejao 18 feet out on the wing for fuck’s sake. Go ahead, just take 9 GD shots and don’t even try to defeat the evil that is Boston sports…

BRyan can't miss that throw but Penny needs to make his pitches regardless

1) Misses his spot with Pence.
2) Hits Blum
3) Leaves the ball up for Manzella
4) The sullivan pitch wasn’t bad — just got burned
5) The curveball to Quintero catches too much of the zone (should have been lower)
6) Leaves the ball up for Bourn

Think; It's not illegal yet.

Heh. I don't watch much Family Guy, so it went right past me.

As for that other part of your comment, I certainly see what you’re saying. But I don’t agree that anger is a good reason to excuse a comment like that.

From the guidelines:

nobody benefits from infantile ravings; these are not welcome. what are “infantile ravings”? they’re comments or diaries posted in the heat of the moment for no reason except to vent frustration.

VEB game threads have become polluted by many of those comments and by that attitude that it’s okay because we all do it. I know I’m not the only one bothered by this, even if I’m one of the few saying something about it.

You can read it in any tone you like.

that's the thing though

you’re not buying a ticket for the Best Game Ever, or opening night of a Broadway show, you’re buying a ticket to one of 162 games, and it should be clear to anyone who follows baseball that not all of them are going to be great. When you’re buying a ticket to a baseball game the possibility that it will be a terrible game is part of the deal.

Yes, but

if you see one series a year and travel to St. Louis from some hell hole in Texas, pay premium prices for a average hotel, and scalper prices on stubhub, it is hard to accept an uninspired and amateurish performance by a bunch of millionaires. Just saying.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down and that foot is me

by heathen on May 11, 2010 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

if I drive six hours to see a bunch of actual amateurs play, and they play badly

do I boo them, or do I hold it because they aren’t millionaires? The lengths you go to to see a game don’t have a lot to do with the risk you run of seeing a bad one.

I’m fine with booing, though I don’t do it myself and don’t see the appeal, but the idea that it’s obligatory because some people buy scalped tickets and don’t live near Busch Stadium doesn’t work for me.

by DanUpBaby on May 11, 2010 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll be pissed if they don't win 3 of 5 in June, but that's just me.

Last year, we came out for the 3 game set against the cubs. Got into town and caught a make up game against the Brewers. That was one of the worst games I saw all year long, and I happened to attend it. But then we swept the scrubs for the three I had planned on attending. It was magical.

Sky Kalkman to the rescue?

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

my argument back with the front page post was that it was too early to be a front page post. feeding the hype was just going to backfire (and yes, I do think VEB feeds the hype). it’s too much to expect these guys to do the rational thing, when so much of it is irrational behavior.

so yeah, I watch for stuff like when there are socks or no socks, or when bats are changed, or more importantly when batting stances change. because that’s someone who’s showing enough anxiety to change their well-worn routine.
I can’t pretend any provable causation, but it’s better correlation than watching, say, Motte.
