gah! this game suddenly got interesting.
"We were men - flesh and blood - and we played baseball in the sunshine. We hit doubles off the wall, slid hard into second base. We had fights, and we made love. We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives." to every batter. They are jumping on the fastball
You spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.
Could you just blow this one up....
I mean like it never happened?
Asshattery: it's an epidemic.
Also, Dave Concepcion.
in fairness
at a certain point it reverts to the pitcher. a guy make an error, the runs thereafter are unearned, but if you give up five straight homers, some of that you have to own.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
from a statistical perspective, none of those runs were earned.
but you’re right, he needed to settle down and make pitches. And he did not.
Thus spoke Zarathustra!
OT, because I want to be pissed about something other than the Cards:
so is Lebron just the game’s “greatest player” by default? because he sure doesn’t seem too interested in doing anything noteworthy this series. And I don’t buy that an injury is really handicapping him this much. He’s hardly even trying to get to the rim, which he can always do. He’s eagerly giving the ball up to to Varejao 18 feet out on the wing for fuck’s sake. Go ahead, just take 9 GD shots and don’t even try to defeat the evil that is Boston sports…
they playing now?
i’m for celts

there's definitely frustration
but these dudes should get over it
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
BRyan can't miss that throw but Penny needs to make his pitches regardless
1) Misses his spot with Pence.
2) Hits Blum
3) Leaves the ball up for Manzella
4) The sullivan pitch wasn’t bad — just got burned
5) The curveball to Quintero catches too much of the zone (should have been lower)
6) Leaves the ball up for Bourn
Think; It's not illegal yet.

I forgot that it's cool and fun to break the guidelines.
I’ll get right on that so that maybe you’ll like me.
You can read it in any tone you like.
I think we can have plenty of fun without breaking the minimal guidelines.
It’s not hard to do. You just have to give a shit.
You can read it in any tone you like.
I was making a family guy reference
Quagmire: ‘Are we in Tiananmen? Cause I see a square!’
But yes, we have fun without breaking the rules. But there are certain situations that warrant a little tolerance for fellow members because let’s face it, we all get pissed off sometimes.
Thus spoke Zarathustra!
Heh. I don't watch much Family Guy, so it went right past me.
As for that other part of your comment, I certainly see what you’re saying. But I don’t agree that anger is a good reason to excuse a comment like that.
From the guidelines:
nobody benefits from infantile ravings; these are not welcome. what are “infantile ravings”? they’re comments or diaries posted in the heat of the moment for no reason except to vent frustration.
VEB game threads have become polluted by many of those comments and by that attitude that it’s okay because we all do it. I know I’m not the only one bothered by this, even if I’m one of the few saying something about it.
You can read it in any tone you like.
agreed, but i generally ignore such comments unless they are extremely infantile
we’ve had quite a few over the last few weeks, the frustration of the team is now boiling over to VEB.
OH NOES!
Thus spoke Zarathustra!
well, that may be true...

Maybe i have a different view on my high horse
but it seems a little unnecessary to boo a first place team…?
it is necessary - actually obligatory - to boo any team that plays poorly for a paying audience
The time has come for someone to put his foot down and that foot is me
sometimes it's hard to know until the game starts, though
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
that's the thing though
you’re not buying a ticket for the Best Game Ever, or opening night of a Broadway show, you’re buying a ticket to one of 162 games, and it should be clear to anyone who follows baseball that not all of them are going to be great. When you’re buying a ticket to a baseball game the possibility that it will be a terrible game is part of the deal.
well, not being a booer myself
i guess i really wouldn’t know. but i certainly don’t begrudge the paying customer his expression.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Yes, but
if you see one series a year and travel to St. Louis from some hell hole in Texas, pay premium prices for a average hotel, and scalper prices on stubhub, it is hard to accept an uninspired and amateurish performance by a bunch of millionaires. Just saying.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down and that foot is me
if I drive six hours to see a bunch of actual amateurs play, and they play badly
do I boo them, or do I hold it because they aren’t millionaires? The lengths you go to to see a game don’t have a lot to do with the risk you run of seeing a bad one.
I’m fine with booing, though I don’t do it myself and don’t see the appeal, but the idea that it’s obligatory because some people buy scalped tickets and don’t live near Busch Stadium doesn’t work for me.
To each his own
but the distance you live from Busch Stadium shouldn’t be determinative of one’s rights to express himself. Your right or choice is not better than mine by virtue of geography.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down and that foot is me

I'll be pissed if they don't win 3 of 5 in June, but that's just me.
Last year, we came out for the 3 game set against the cubs. Got into town and caught a make up game against the Brewers. That was one of the worst games I saw all year long, and I happened to attend it. But then we swept the scrubs for the three I had planned on attending. It was magical.

i’m not a boo’er, but a fan has a right to boo, imo, regardless of what i personally think of it. unless you are some moral arbiter of baseball, i wouldn’t let it bother you.

He generally gets the job done out there, although he has this tendency to make even good plays look incredibly painful and ungraceful.

Sky Kalkman to the rescue?
In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

I don't know,
if he’s, say, three wins worse than he usually is, which would be pretty catastrophic, I think the cardinals could still win this division.
its not just albert though, its the whole god damn offense
I crawled the earth, but now I'm higher, 2010 watch it go to fire!

matt wasn't actually that bad
if boog were scuffling the way matt is, i would be okay with it.
man, you can almost see boog’s confidence eroding after that stolen triple. he could’ve come out of that series with a triple, a run, and a base hit if not for the umpires. anybody else would stick with that batting stance and just keep chugging through. he’s too much like skip; he dwells. except with boog it’s more of a gnawing thing…..

bad umping aside
he may have gotten a talking to on that, if we’re looking for a reason for his play.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Brendan's quotes are just relentlessly hard on himself
you really think he’s gonna look on the bright side? he remembers his records and averages, right from the back of a baseball card. he wants results yesterday.
the stuff that he overreacts on are glaringly predictable. if somebody knows how to talk him out of that funk, they could get him on the All-Star team with no problem.

unfortunately, the same could be said of k-bot
hopefully we’re not in that territory.

I think pitchers are pitching around him even more than they ever have.
Seems like he’s walking a lot even though he’s swinging at a lot of out-of-zone crap.
Which, as someone here once pointed out, was kind of the amazing thing about Barry Bonds. Dude got about two pitches to hit every game and still put up those numbers.

when you are looking at winning the division by a mile
perhaps the sense of urgency erodes.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
That worked out well for us last season.

but it was tight the first half, at least
this year it began already determined.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
are you kidding?
most of the team is still re-living that division series.
they’re not thinking “hey we’re in first.” they’re thinking “failing with runners in scoring position is how we never contended for a pennant.”

huh?
i’m saying last year we had to overachieve to eek out a couple game lead. this year we will run away with it even underachieving – i see no sense of urgency, anyway. we’ve played pretty poorly in every aspect but starting pitching, but are good enough to get by.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
That was me.
I was actually thinking of looking at Albert’s 2010 strike-to-ball ratio.
You can read it in any tone you like.
I think he's playing tomorrow, that's what I think.
Boog is officially one of Tony’s guys now.
Asshattery: it's an epidemic.
Also, Dave Concepcion.
He bailed on his charity golf tournament...
I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s released soon.
Franklin !#@$!&*%#
who knows
does not look like he will hit this year. It is not that he is just not hitting, he is not hitting anything hard

no, he's not seeing it
he spent spring training swinging at BP pitches. meaning, swinging at everything. (there’s a P-D quote that backs that.) it always takes Brendan the longest to calibrate his pitch recognition. that’s normal… he needs playing time.
what’s not normal is changing his swing AND after he’s finally alleviating a wrist problem he’s had, in some form, since high school.
also, what riverrat said.

this is between the ears, too.
my argument back with the front page post was that it was too early to be a front page post. feeding the hype was just going to backfire (and yes, I do think VEB feeds the hype). it’s too much to expect these guys to do the rational thing, when so much of it is irrational behavior.
so yeah, I watch for stuff like when there are socks or no socks, or when bats are changed, or more importantly when batting stances change. because that’s someone who’s showing enough anxiety to change their well-worn routine.
I can’t pretend any provable causation, but it’s better correlation than watching, say, Motte.

I disagree.....
he has a career high LD%(.239), and a career low BABIP.
Asshattery: it's an epidemic.
Also, Dave Concepcion.
you'd have to break the LD's down though
some are just not high enough to be IFFB. he’s really not unlucky, imo. schu is more unlucky, but he’s still sucking.
