now, maybe if that last thread weren't full of double posts and comments on double posting, we wouldn't need an overflow.
my only regret is that kyle doesn't get a win for pitching a fine game.

Lohse got screwed
Just goes to show why W-L is a craptastic stat.
Asshattery: it's an epidemic.
Also, Dave Concepcion.

And we won the game.
And Kyle Lohse’s performance was a big reason why (just look at WPA). Nonetheless Lohse is not credited with a “win.”

I do indeed.
They have some cool stuff, as per usual, which is expensive, as per usual. They have Rasmus t-jerseys. They are not Majestic and have the number on the front of the shirt as well as name and number on back. I bought one.
They also have the Majestic Musial t-jersey, complete with 1940s era birds-on-the-bat. They have this in grey and red.
Another cool shirt is a powder blue tee by Nike. It has an image of Ozzie. Another version has Willie McGee. Very cool.

we have to stop gloating over the soriano contract now
Al has spoken:
“He’s hot. Ride him as long as this lasts, because you know there will be cold spells where people here will call the contract an albatross, call him a “guess-hitting hack”, etc. For now, Soriano looks like the guy who helped carry the 2007 Cubs into the playoffs."
he is ops’ing .944, though. and fuku is at 1.114. lee is .685 and ramirez is .493

Walk rate.
We’ll see if that 10% walk rate continues. If it doesn’t, and his. 325 BABIP evens out, he might be worth two-thirds of his salary…

Meh
I’ll give Soriano credit for hitting well so far, of course in order to be worth the 18M he’d still have to be better than he’s hitting now because of how bad he is defensively to be worth his contract, but he’s been hitting well.

and i shouldn’t be hypocritical and rag on holliday when his contract is no more his fault than lohse’s is, i admit that. but my walrus love is just not dissipating quickly enough…just give me time.

walrus love is a beautiful thing.

"We were men - flesh and blood - and we played baseball in the sunshine. We hit doubles off the wall, slid hard into second base. We had fights, and we made love. We sang songs and prayed on Sundays. . . . We felt pain. And we felt joy. There was a lot wrong with the world. But we weren't sad, man. We had the times of our lives." who's this colby lewis?
goes toe-to-toe with cliff lee today, retires the final 21 hitters he faces in 9 innings. has 10k’s, with 1bb and 3 hits.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
He pitched in Japan last year.
Had an ERA in the neighborhood of 2.4 as a starter. Signed by the Rangers on a deal. Looks good so far.
In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

who debuts first
chapman or strasburg?
“The inevitable progression of Stephen Strasburg will continue after the pitcher makes one last start for Double-A Harrisburg on Sunday, according to Bill Ladson’s sources. Strasburg is slated to work five innings or 85 pitches against Altoona and be bumped up to Triple-A Syracuse afterward as long as all goes well. Judging by Strasburg’s work so far with the Senators (one run, 23 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings), it shouldn’t be a problem.”

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
to say chapman is overrated depends on how you rate him to begin with
he is not overrated in my book.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
He's being compared to Strasburg by too many people
Thus he is overrated. Strasburg has better command, a better breaking ball and a better changeup to go with 100 mph.
Not afraid to nitpick
oh, well, then those people are probably, imo, overrating him
to use an analogy, strasburg has carp-level talent, whereas chapman is maxxed at waino.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Hell even that is giving Chapman too much credit
Strasburg has the best stuff in baseball with no hyperbole—-he averaged 98 mph in an AFL start—-and command to go with it. He’s probably on a rate basis about as good as Verlander right now going forward (23/3 K/BB!). His ceiling is higher than Carpenter. TINSTAAP and all, but there’s a non-zero chance that he’s the obvious best pitcher in baseball in a couple years if he stays healthy.
Chapman has the killer fastball, but his breaking ball is inconsistent and he doesn’t throw strikes. He’s probably not even as good as Matt Thornton right now from what I’ve seen + the stats.
Not afraid to nitpick
this is why i compare strasburg's talent to carp
not saying he doesn’t have more, just that he could also be the best pitcher in baseball, when healthy. i guess i rate chapman a little higher than you, though. i knew he’d get the money, and if it was me i would’ve given it to him. i don’t think it was much of a risk, with a high-reward potential.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Gotcha
I love me some Strasburg, he has just everything you’d want in a pitcher and just haven’t been impressed with Chapman. I fail to see how he’s better than Thornton.
Not afraid to nitpick
well, he's a little younger than thornton
and just has to adapt to a higher level of play. but i’m with you on strasburg – he might be roy halladay armed with a 100mph fastball.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I can see it now

Mayweather is only a 3-1 favorite
Mosley has the talent to win.
My guess is he’d end up being a little less than 2-1 favorite over Pacquiao. The early line on Pacman-Mayweather was May -120 and there was an enormous amount of bets that pushed it to -150 pretty quickly I believe. I would jump all over Mayweather -150 right now in that fight.
Not afraid to nitpick
i'd like mayweather to be a big favorite
i’d take pac man, though i doubt it ever happens. mayweather doesn’t need the money to risk IT.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
I guess they could go Berto or Mike Jones
But there really isn’t a competitive fight for either if Floyd wins.

Assuming Mayweather beats Mosley
There aren’t any other big fights for either guy, and Pacquiao isn’t that big of a PPV draw on his own but that could be a 3+ million buy fight. 60M or 70M has a way of relieving his doubts about drug testing.

Game notes
C Yadier Molina and 3B Freese got tangled up a bit chasing Bruce’s foul pop in the fourth and Freese’s glove went flying as Molina made the catch near the Reds dugout. … Of the Cardinals’ 111 runs, 53 have come on homers. … Rolen, a seven-time Gold Glove winner at 3B, has four errors after totaling five last year with Toronto and Cincinnati. … Pujols drew his major league-leading eighth intentional walk with one out and a man on second in the first. He’s 12 for 21 (.571) during a six-game hitting streak.
tough error for rolen
great play – who else gets that ball? votto was asleep at the wheel, didn’t realize the go-ahead was on base i guess – if he goes for the scoop, you gotta make it, otherwise it’s on you for not preventing the run. i don’t think votto was aware – sorta like colby today.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
It wasn't a great throw.
If Brendan Ryan had made that throw and Albert didn’t pick it cleanly (1) we’d be surprised Albert didn’t pick it, but (2) it would be on Brendan.
You can read it in any tone you like.
well, considering where he threw if from (his knees)
probably wasn’t going to be a great throw. but in that situation the 1B most important responsibility is to prevent the run, which was simple to do. if he wanted to go for the whole ball of wax, fine, but then you gotta make the play.
i’d say the same if albert allowed that run – if you have to come off the bag, that’s what you do, but you cannot let the ball get by, and especially in that situation. pretty sure albert would’ve gloved it, as votto’s not so great at first, but if he couldn’t, albert would’ve come off the bag and smothered it.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

It's Hyde from That 70's Show!

S-Cards report, 7-2 loss to Tulsa
Nick Additon was not good today. Not good at all. He gave up all 7 runs in a mere 4 IP. 5 of the runs came in the third and the final 2 came in the fourth. He gave up 2 LONG home runs and was generally unimpressive, as were most of the baby birds today.
Jim Rappaport, Colt Sedbrook, and Adron Chambers all had multiple hits. Sedbrook and Chambers each had a ball slapped down the line into opposite fields that could have been doubles. Chambers got gunned out at second on his, and Sedbrook choked and stopped at first. More glaring than his stop, was the fact that he stood on the bag, like he was happy just to get there as the right fielder kicked the ball, and then threw wildly past the bag at second. This ended up hurting the team as he would have scored in the inning if he had taken the extra base, but instead ended up getting stranded at third.
All wasn’t bad from Sedbrook on the bases as he had 2 excellent takeout slides at second, each breaking up potential double plays. After the first, he received a harty round of applause from the crowd. I thought “well, the crowd here knows a little baseball,” and then I heard the guy behind me start mouthing off about how if the second baseman had been out of the baseline Sedbrook could have been ejected. I wanted to turn around and slap him.
The bullpen was solid in support of Additon, especially Azru’s favorite Chuckie Fick. Fick showed a pretty good out pitch (slider?) racking up 2 K’s and getting a weak grounder in his inning of work. Blake King and Matt Meyer each pitched 2 innings with King allowing 2 hits and Meyer throwing up all zeros with 3K’s. Meyer seemed to be more of a gimmick pitcher.
Kozmanaut did nothing all day, 0/4 with a K and a 4 pitch BB. In the field he handled the only play he had and almost came up with a couple of highlight reel plays. Except, they don’t make highlights of plays you ALMOST make. He went into shallow left down the line and dove for a ball that ended up being a double in the 4th(i think) that could have prevented Additon’s further damage.
All in all, I wasn’t impressed with the baby birds. They seemed to have inherited the big clubs penchant for LOBsters, including a second and third, nobody out inning that went scoreless. That, along with the aforementioned baserunning blunders, and an AWFUL error by Curt Smith in his 4 innings at first, left me unimpressed.
The wife and I took some pictures from our seats. I’ll try to get them uploaded for your pleasure when we get back home. We were 13 rows up above the 1st base dugout, but she’s got a pretty awesome setup. It was pretty difficult to keep up with what the pitchers were throwing from where we were, so I apologize for not being able to give more details. The speed gun operator apparently is only required to post every third pitch speed at the stadium, so that didn’t help.
If we don’t get blown away, we’ll be at the big club game tomorrow.
Azru, if you want to use any of this, feel free.

unfortunately, springfield is a bit barren
This year. In the field there is basically kozma, the catching corps (cutler and hill) and the outfield (daryl jones, rapoport, and chambers). Each is flawed in his own way. I don’t know that any has an iron-clad stake on a major league role.
The pitching corps is much the same – aside from sanchez, the pitching corps has some nice names, but little in the way of top talent. Most of the really interesting folks are either at memphis or the lower minors.
We had the times of our lives." forgot about cutler
he was the one who broke the shutout, and he gunned down the only runner who attempted to steal. It was the leadoff batter and it was the worst jump ever, looked more like a bad attempt at a delayed steal. He was out by 30 feet.

Guys, I have a TV problem.
As in mine died this evening. It’s old, so we don’t want to repair it.
Looked for TVs online, read Consumer Reports advice, found a TV that looked great and it didn’t have any USB ports. So we kept looking. Finally, we settled on this one, a Samsung 40" 1080p 120Hz. I know very little about LCD HD TVs, but this appears to be a good television. And it’s on sale for $769. The cheapest we could get it in a store is $809, and then we’d have to pay taxes. Basically, buying it on Amazon saves me about $100.
Josh is telling me to pull the trigger, but I decided to run it past you guys in case any of you had any thoughts or advice.

wonder if the lohse hate will die down soon but...
that 5.28 ERA is not as bad as it looks…. 7 earned runs in 3 innings for a start will do that to you
not counting that start which he had a headache on and wasn’t clearly not right, he has these stats:
26 IP (6.5 IP/G), 3.46 ERA, 3 quality starts, 14 K’s, 5 BB’s
one worry at least is that he’s doing this with a bit below average BABIP of .287 (tell me if this is right, I did my own math)
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
idk if i did it right, but using ehow's directional guide
i got a 2.70 FIP without that start…
that doesn’t sound right, but i’ll go with it
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
below average BABIP is bad for a pitcher
but his BABIP is .321, so he’s a bit unlucky
his FIP is 3.67, tERA is 3.49. i don’t think any of thise includes today
i don’t know why you’re doing the math yourself, either. www.fangraphs.com www.baseball-reference.com
"Moneyball: It's kind of like communism."
idk either, but fangraphs isn't updated for me at least
it says he only has 4 starts right now

fun with fangraphs
Leaders on Cards for these stats
K/9 = Trever Miller (9.64)
BB/9 = Ryan Franklin (0.00)
K/BB = Adam Wainwright = (3.75)
opponent average = Dennys Reyes (.101)
luckiest pitcher = Dennys Reyes (.072 BABIP)
luckiest starter = Jaime Garcia (.179 BABIP)
unluckiest pitcher = Blake Hawksworth (.374)
unluckiest pitcher = Kyle Lohse (.321 not including tonight)
FIP leader = Hawksworth
how the hell is hawksworth the FIP leader with that BABIP?
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
ok well lohse is by far the unluckiest pitcher
his FIP is 2.87 lower than his ERA
and reyes is the luckiest still…. with a FIP of over 4.51
technically lopez is luckier but we’ll ignore that
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
look at diner with the .072
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
that only confirms my desire to have trever miller
be the primary go-to LOOGY….
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
haha
he’s worse than franklin against righties
reyes should be the LOOGY who might face a righty once and a while
miller should never face a righty…. NEVER
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
colby needs to pitch next time we have a 20-inning game
so he can work on his control. that one throw looked like he was throwing at someone in the reds dugout.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
and the other throw
barely made it to the pitcher’s mound
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
i just re-watched it
he was shocked “oh snap, he’s running” by then phillips was a quarter of the way down the line. he just caught it flat-footed like nobody was on third. oh well, not gonna rag on klobby too much.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
we've discussed this, that was the sleep-deprived, thinking about pillows rasmus
"So do you like 'Little Women'?"
"Yeah, I'm not too picky. Ya' know."
if he was ready, i think he would have thrown him out
with a half-decent throw
THAT throw nearly got him out so i wonder what a good throw would do
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
and felipe lopez has a .262 BABIP so
that one scoreless inning looks even better
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
does that make sense?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
not really
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
i mean, how many batters he face?
if it was .250 or .400…but .262? is that his batting number maybe?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
ummm im pretty sure its him pitching
but i dont understand how he got .262…. fangraphs doesn’t lie though…

oddly enough
Colby Rasmus is worth more than Pujols thus far
but why is Rasmus replacement player lower than pujols? i don’t get this
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
sorry that made no sense
it says rasmus is worth 2.8 more than a replacement player, while Pujols is worth 3.3 more
but Rasmus has a better WAR and is worth more dollars apparantly
that makes no sense to me
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
OH I see what you're saying
They go by position, so the average 1B replacement player will outhit the average CF replacement hitter. That’s why yadi’s is like 12 something because he’s a catcher and they’re not known for their offense.
im still confused
don’t 1B generally put up better stats than CFs?
and Yadi’s is 2.9 for the record
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
oh I was talking about positional, well if you click that little button that say glossary it will tell you
Replacement – Replacement Runs set at 20 runs per 600 plate apperances
yeah, i'd think if colby is outhitting pujols
he’d outhit a replacement cf’er by a larger margin than pujols outhits a replacement 1b
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
that's what I'm saying
which is why I’m confused
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
comments
Of course Pujols didn’t hustle-does he ever? No, he’s infamous for standing around and assuming that every pop fly/line drive/blooper is a home run and he doesn’t need to trouble himself with running hard. You don’t have to cover up something everyone already knows.
The reason why Pujols didn’t hustle to second base is obvious: His hamstrings are about to blow any day now because of his rampant PED use. Or – self-righteous religious tool that he is – maybe God told him it was OK to loaf it all the way to second base because God also told him that he wants him to hit home runs. At least that’s what Albert thinks. But Meth Nation (i.e. Cardinals fans) says Albert has no ego. Yeah, right. GO ROYALS!!!
Dude, Pujols sucks. I dropped him from my fantasy team for Paul Konerko.
League-leading 10 home runs already!!!

- Pujols’ hamstrings will blow out from taking PEDs
- Cardinal Nation is another name for Meth Nation
- Paul Konerko rapes Pujols in fantasy

They need to disable the comments on these stories...
1. The KC fan is just jealous because they decided NOT to draft a guy who played college ball in their city.
2. The guy who thinks Albert is never hustling has never seen Albert play baseball apparently.
3. Im pretty sure the dude who said Pujols sucks was being sarcastic…
