We have a home video of me batting my first year of little league

I was pretty scared of other kids pitching to me at first, so I’d always back out of the box a little bit when the pitcher threw it. So my dad would yell at me to stay in the batter’s box. Anyway, the one game where they had the video camera out, the other team’s kid is throwing pretty hard, so I’m in there, trying as hard as I can not to back out of the box, and he hits me in the head. All you hear is dad laughing at me.

Why?

A few friends and I got the Pacquiao-Hatton fight last year, and we were all pulling for Hatton to win. Pacquiao walks down to the ring and looks like he escaped from a mental hospital. Halfway through the first round we were no longer pulling for Hatton to win, just to make it through the first round. Pacquiao destroyed him. After it was over, his face was even more maniacal. I’ve been a fan ever since (his “music” “career” notwithstanding)

Craig's lack of production at the plate is starting to bother me

The more ABs he gets, the worse his PAs become. He looks like he’s pressing a bit. He got unlucky early, and now he seems to have lost some confidence with the bat.
Last Sept, I was extremely disappointed he didn’t get a call-up, and that move (or lack of) I think has hurt him this year. I’m begining to wonder if he’d gotten a look at MLB pitching last Sept, possibly his conficence and also his strategy at the plate would be better right now. I know we’ll never know, as it’s in the past, but if you’ve got a guy in AAA who has “proven everything he can at AAA” he would be the first to get a sept call-up to help him take that next step the next season.

in the end it didn't matter

other than effing with AW’s ERA, and Boog’s UZR… but definitely the kind of Floppyball i was worried about when we signed him.

Still, he’s been a lot better than I thought he’d be; if he does that once every 16 games I’ll be OK with it. Even though that would be roughly a win’s worth of mental errors.

I agree

it’s not that he’s a bad defender… I’m starting to think he’s just a bad fit for our defense. there’s an unusual number of heads-up plays in our infield. if an infielder is just going through it by rote, they’re going to hit the fail button on a lot of close, risky plays.

Infield defense is like billiards.

If you make all the easy ones, you only have to make brilliant ones once in a while to be considered very good.

I'm one of those "I don't care how you killed the cow; just serve me a great steak" guys. If the results are logical and easy to understand, I'm pouring some A1 sauce on that formula and eating it. UZR qualifies. -Bill Simmons

by hazel on Apr 25, 2010 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

but no one makes "all" the easy ones.

And few make truly brilliant plays, though many (say, hanley ramirez, a few games back) make easy ones look brilliant.

biggest issue here is that Lopez’s failure hurt AW, and hurt Boog, but did not hurt Lopez, sabermetrically, as the current tools work.

my trouble with all of this

is we’re talking about Lopez individually. I’m talking about how he fits into the team, and specifically the team’s game plan. something that the Cardinals organization prides itself on, even.

Lopez doesn’t have a lot of holes in his defensive game, but I have seen him fail to make heads-up plays that involve catching the ball. In 2008 and 2010. and during warm-ups, multiple times. Just like I saw Lugo be really solid except for getting the ball out of his glove. it would be nice if we could step away from the tools that tack numbers on these guys, for just a second, and talk about what’s actually going on in the field.

Waino deserves better dammit

You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.
