My first St. Louis trip and I need some help
Long time looker, rare poster here; and I need a little assistance from Cardinal Nation.
I finally set some time in my schedule to visit St. Louis to see the Cardinals/ A's series. It's my first extended trip to the Lou, and if I could implore you for some help, that would be superb. I'm looking for a hotel. I would like one kind of close to the stadium or the Metro Link thing. I don't necessarily want it to cost me my first born (since I'll be spending at least that on my tickets) and I kind of would like to be in a nice area as I plan on hitting up the city after dark. What places would you recommend?
Now, I'm going by myself. What places would you recommend for a single/Late 20's dude to have some fun?
Thanks and go Cards!!!!!!!!!!

Are you coming to VEB Day on 6/19?
I don’t think I have you counted.
There are numerous places to stay and play. For places to play I would recommend either Washington Ave. or Soulard. Wash Ave. is walking distance from the ballpark. Soulard is a short cab ride. There are a bunch of places to stay downtown as well. There is a Drury Inn on Broadway that should be reasonable. If you go a bit further out there is a Courtyard (Marriott) at Jefferson & Market that is reasonable. The nice thing about the Courtyard hotel is that you can ride the shuttle that runs to and from Harry’s Restaurant which is next door to the hotel.
Another option is to stay at the Casino Queen across the river. The MetroLink stops there and runs to the ballpark. Of course a stay there could get expensive…even if the rooms are cheap.

Hampton Inn
I stayed at the Hampton Inn a few years ago and liked the location. Can walk to the ballpark and to LaClede’s Landing for dinner/drinks afterwards. We stayed at the Millenium Hotel (for the ticket package) and were not happy. I found a dirty sock in my bed!!

I'm staying at the Drury Plaza
for Opening Day week. It’s not bad, and it’s not very expensive. Very close to the ballpark, and near enough to Washington Ave., LaClede’s Landing.

As far as stuff to do
you may want to check out the Delmar Loop…they’ve got some pretty cool shops and places to eat…Blueberry Hill…the Tivoli…Vintage Vinyl…The Melting pot is pretty expensive but fantastic…Fitz’s root beer microbrewery is over there too. It’s a pretty neat place to walk around and check stuff out.
check out VEB on facebook...just search groups for Viva El Birdos
Also, if you do wanna drop some coin
maybe look into staying at the Moonrise Hotel in the Loop – It’s supposed to be awesome and its right next to a Metro stop. On the other hand, if you want to stay close to the stadium, I’d recommend what others have said: Drury, Ballpark Hilton or Hilton Downtown, maybe the Westin if you’re going a bit more expensive. Renaissance Grand on Washington is close enough to the stadium and puts you close to the Washington nightlife.
As for nightlife, places around the stadium are usually hopping after games, especially Shannon’s. Broadway Oyster Bar is also a good bet. Harry’s is a bit further away towards Union Station, but usually has a pretty agreeable clientele (errr…hot chicks). If you’re going out on Washington, maybe try Lucas Park Grill or The Dubliner (not that I necessarily like these places, they’re just the most popular spots). Personally, I prefer Soulard. Maybe hit up McGurk’s (younger crowd) just to check out its outdoor bar-which is pretty cool- then make your way down 9th (I think?) to check out Molly’s (another cool patio) or Llewelyn’s. Other places to check out are the Loop (as mentioned before) and the Central West End (check out the lower level at Brennan’s for Scotch and a cigar, if that’s your vice).
You can go to Laclede’s Landing if you want, but personally I think it sucks.
Random advice: Don’t count on public transportation to get you anywhere in STL besides to the game. And cabs are tough to just flag down, you’re gonna need to call.
Is the "garlic is king" restaurant still there?
I can’t remember the name. Had dinner there about 8 years ago and really enjoyed it.
Chuck Berry’s place is up there too, isn’t it?

Listen to Flim here, Flim knows all
I am currently looking into Hotel deals but I should be able to get a 3 to 4 star hotel downtown for under $50 that weekend. The thing you should know about Saint Louis is that it is a driving town. Our public transportation is shit.
Wow!
Thanks for the suggestions all. I’m stoked I’m finally going to be able to go. Not looking at spending a ton of money where I sleep, since I’m not going to be spending much time there. More looking forward to the games and nightlife!

Geiger, lets go!
I’d stay somewhere decent in case you pick up a lucky lady, and I’d stay close to downtown. Stick with Flim’s advice.
Like many have mentioned, the bars just south of the stadium and Mike Shannon’s are great for pre and post game. the bars southwest of the stadium tend to run with a younger, more red bull infused crowd, the bars south east more of a laid back, but still partying crowd.
Washington Ave has some great bars, but most are a little scenester and douchy for my taste (no offense, anyone), I love Hair of the dog, though. Soulard is a great time esp McGurks, Mollys, and the Great Grizzly Bear. There are also a ton of good bar/resturants there if you want to go for lunch one day. Blues City Deli across the highway form Soulard in Benton Park is my favorite deli in the city.
Lots of other great places to go, too, if you get the chance (Central West End, The Loop, Dogtown, south Grand), but if you don’t you can always come back. Have a great stay and go with the flow!
