Kirksville, MO
I am looking at moving to Kirksville, MO. I have been offered a job, and would need to move over there. Looking for apartments, have a bunch of questions, can’t seem to find any web sites for complexes. Anyone know of any?
My buddy that went to Truman
Said they’re easy to find and cheap

I'm kind of particular about
Things with the apartment, what with the little lady and all. She’s two, so I’m a bit picky.
I would love to have a gym/pool/etc. and have cable/net included. Not too worried about the rent, so….. Ya. any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
Well
Laundry in the apartment would be great, cable and net being included would be awesome, the pool thing is really important because my daughter is a freaking swimming FANATIC. Everyday we come home she says “Daddy, pool. Let’s play in the water daddy. Ooooooooh, water!” So, I wouldn’t want to break her little heart by not letting her have access to a pool. Other than that I’m willing to compromise. Proximity to the U is not priority at all.
you'll have to figure out how close you want to live to the university
if you want amenities you’re going to want to be on the edge of town, most likely. KV is a one-stoplight town that’s grown some due to the university there, but it’s still pretty tiny and most of the apartments are going to be geared towards students.

The Ville
1) Sorry…
2) Campbell Apartments are alright. They’re in the SW corner of town, but unless your job is out in the boonies, then you can get there in 10-15 minutes since K-Ville is so small.
If it makes you feel better
I go to school in LA and I’m done with this town. Permanently.
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
Small towns
I’m from a small town, (1700 people) and have lived in a town of 22,000 for MOST of the last 6 years. So, small towns don’t bother me. Plus, I kind of like the idea of small towns for me and the little lady.

I've already printed out a slip of paper that says 'Cy Young (2009)'...
…and place it on the screen when I review his stats page.
Lincecum be damned. Let’s switch his and Garcias position and see who really is the best head-to-head.
I once shot a man just to see him die...then I got distracted and missed it.
i thought carp should've won
wonder if a 2 has ever won – too delirious to think about it.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Doesn't the fact that you won a Cy young kind of make you the #1?
I'm one of those "I don't care how you killed the cow; just serve me a great steak" guys. If the results are logical and easy to understand, I'm pouring some A1 sauce on that formula and eating it. UZR qualifies. -Bill Simmons
if you win one as a 2 it makes you a 1
but has anyone ever done that is my question.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Plenty of times,
Clemens, Lincecum when they won their first times, hell, Mike Maroth started multiple years as a “#1 Pitcher”
I'm one of those "I don't care how you killed the cow; just serve me a great steak" guys. If the results are logical and easy to understand, I'm pouring some A1 sauce on that formula and eating it. UZR qualifies. -Bill Simmons
clemens and lincecum were 2's?
i’m talking reality, the ace of the staff, not who starts opening day or something frivolous. carp was the best pitcher on the cards last year, but had waino had a better year and also won the cy, i’d say he was the ace. so, has the second best pitcher on a staff won over the best pitcher on the staff, i guess i’m asking. looks like cody might have an answer below. apparently the third best pitcher on the braves in some particular year won a cy.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
that's a contradiction
ace of staff pitches opening day most years, unless you mean at end of year in which case this doesn’t make sense
"You’ve got to play every game like it’s your last because it’s definitely survive-and-advance or don’t survive and school," Tiller said.
by stlcardsfan4 on Apr 19, 2010 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions
i'm saying carp was ace of staff
at beginning AND end of year. had waino won over the better pitcher on his own team, that would be something.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
so 3 wasn't even 1 on the team?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
did anyone on his own staff have a better year?
like last year, had waino won it and carp the better year, that would’ve blown my mind. i’m just wondering if it has ever happened that the guy who won wasn’t even the best on his own staff that year.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
is that glavine?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
well if the other guys had a better year
(assuming smoltz and maddux) that is surprising. don’t remember the records, etc.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
really?
i don’t even recall their records or era or anything, so i don’t know.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Bartolo won it because he was 21-8, Lackey 14-5
Bartolo threw an extra 11 innings, but Lackey had a lower ERA, FIP, xFIP……everything.
Of course it was Johan who got utterly jobbed by that voting.
Not afraid to nitpick
yeah, those records on the same team
would not likely be ignored by voters. it’s a small innings pitched diff, but apparently they take that into account. carp knows (that was a bigger diff in ip, and i’m not bitching about it, just that i wish carp hadn’t hurt himself swinging and lost a cy)
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
ah, my impression of cy voters was different
didn’t realize they were so distinguishing.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
WINNER WINNER. double down for dinner
…if i wasn’t too drunk to drive to go get one
"The outfield is deep and playing him straight-away, and the infield is the same, except first, second, third, and short are playing him to pull."

Waino .178 (also .020 with the bat)
Ludwick .478
Rasmus .246
Holliday .147
Pujols was -.167. Not going to see that often.
WPA definitely understates the importance of starting pitchers, right?
If WW had allowed 2 runners in the 8th and gotten out of that jam, his WPA would have been higher than if he kept them off in the first place, is that correct?
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
that's messed up
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Waino did have a fielding error
I dunno if that counts in WPA, but it did allow an extra run to score.
WPA treats each event that happens as a discrete thing
So the fact that Waino pitched a complete game and pitched so well doesn’t count, it’s only the individual plays that he makes.
by vivaelpujols on Apr 18, 2010 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions
is there a different stat you would use
that better reflects what happened? I mean, I take it what you’re saying is WPA isn’t very holistic, it’s looking at the trees and not the forest.
interesting
the table for 2009 at the link is eye-opening. Basically there’s Greinke, and then everybody else is bunched up together.
Yes
The point of DIRVA+ is to separate pitching and fielding, unlike FIP, which separates things that pitchers can significantly control from things that pitcher’s can’t as well.
DIRVA+ is a much, much better measure of retrospective performance

Okay.
I’ll let his play guide my opinion, not his birth date. The ‘kid’ doesn’t look prone to serious arm issues, has a smart pitchers mentality, brass balls and a winners attitude. Add into that confidence, quality pitches, leadership and I’ll take him for the next eight to ten years to get right around 20 a season (assuming he’s a cardinal and the team, as a whole, is still solid).

He was pretty efficient.
Kept the pitch count down, without his best stuff, and got the curve working late in the game, shutting them down totally after the third, or so.
Still
Wouldn’t call him the ‘Ace’ over Carp, though. We’re just fortunate to have an incredibly good 1-2 punch, with Penny and Garcia looking exceptional as well, so far.

the 20 bullet points for 20 innings post on the front page is well worth a read
19. I recognize that it was late in the game and a lot of those guys had been in there for the equivalent of two ballgames, but to score zero runs against infielder Felipe Lopez in the 18th and just two runs in the final two innings against outfielder Joe Mather is depressing, embarrassing, and even a little shameful
20. And finally, the quote of the day: When Jerry Manuel was asked during the postgame interview, “In all seriousness, if you had taken out your cleanup hitter in a New York home game and have the pitcher twice bat with the bases loaded after Pujols walked, what would happen to you?”, the Mets’ manager responded, “Oh, you know what’d happen to me!”
Yup, pretty much nailed those two.
i liked 20

Game Recap
short but sweet tonight
Player of the Game – Waino – CG, 9 IP, 9 Ks, 2 ERs, W
Goat of the Game – Albert Pujols – 0-5, 5 LOBsters
Defensive Play of the Game – I’m not one to reward mets players, but jeff franceour’s throwout of ludwick in the 1st earns it
Stupid Quote of the Day – “That’s the problem, when you hit as good as albert, you think you can hit anything” – Joe Morgan
Hmmm……. honorable mention to Joe saying Waino had a bad curveball when the hitter fell out of his shoes
Stupid Play of the Day – Waino error in 2nd almost ruined his start
Umpire Grading – C+ – Umpires have generally sucked this series… better than last night, but not great

ESPN covering the knuckleball...
…I’d like to see them get Uecker’s quote on how to catch a knuckleballer: “Wait until it stops rolling then go back to the backstop and pick it up.”
I once shot a man just to see him die...then I got distracted and missed it.
Had a kid on the team back in high school
that threw a half decent knuckler. The catcher we had literally caught on his knees the whole game, just…trying to keep it in front of him. It was pretty hilarious, even though if he didn’t release it just right, he got battered.

VEB Weekend Recap Thread:
Thursday night: Friend flies in from Missouri to come visit me. I just turned 21 on Tuesday, so we have a few beers at a friend’s place, go to sleep fairly early.
Friday: Wake up, give him a tour around campus. Go to Santa Monica beach and hang out with some girlies, then meet a few buddies at the Yard House (I think there’s one in KC. It’s FANTASTIC. 100 beers on tap). Had a goblet of Maudite, a goblet of Delerium Tremens, and a pint of Warsteiner Dunkel. Was there until 11:30, come back, play some FIFA, go to sleep.
Saturday: Spend all day in Claremont watching the women’s Ultimate Frisbee team here play in their Sectionals. Come back just in time to watch the start of the 15th inning of the Cards game. Finished that out, took a few shots, went and ate Mexican food at Chano’s here. Took a tram to meet up with a friend downtown, where we went to an ULTRA-CLASSY rum bar that has a membership fee of $20 per year or something, some other random bar called the Golden Gopher, and then to the Standard Hotel for late night dinner.
One consequence I’ve noticed since turning 21 is that I no longer know when it’s socially acceptable to drink. Now, every time I go to a restaurant that serves, I feel OBLIGATED to buy a beer.
Of all sad words of tongue or pen; the saddest are these: 'It might have been!'
usually breakfast is a bad time to get a beer...

That feeling of obligation dies very quickly on a college budget
That was also beaten out of me by visiting the city of Prague: land of the $1 .5L beers and .3L waters for $2.50. By the end of the monthish, I dreaded beer (before 8 PM) but just couldn’t bring myself to spend 4x as much money on a beverage even at 10 AM….along with everyone else in that city.

More importantly for the social life: put it this way, the legal climate is effectively similar to Amsterdam except it’s 3x as large a city—-it has beer that is on par with Germany’s finest but ohbytheway costs $1-2 for .5L (17 ounces) in 95% of the places—-cheap public transportation takes you most places in the downtown—-once you get to the main square you can walk 2 miles in any direction and find endless restaurants/bars/casinos/clubs/"special"clubs so bar hopping gets taken to a whole new level, and the party goes all night. The only negative I can think of is that not everyone speaks English and some of the older people are a little standoffish to foreigners, but that’s kinda fun in a way.
If I could get a job and live there, I’d be learning Czech.

gdm's random thought of the night
after watching the replay again, if Luddy slides towards the inside part of the plate instead of the outside part in the first inning, he would have been safe. he ran right into the throw & it was easy for the catcher to tag him. there’s no way with the catcher going back to catch it like he had do, that he could have tagged Luddy out if Luddy slid on the inside part. his momentum would have been taking him away from Luddy instead of right at Luddy.
the question is, should or could Luddy have recognized that and been able to adjust accordingly? think about it, if he’s safe, Lego’s on 2nd with two outs & mayne has to pitch to Colby with a RISP & with as bad as he was pitching tonight, who knows what happens next? oh what might have been,,,,
this as been gdm’s random thought of the night. you may now go back to doing whatever it was you were doing

Didn't see the play
but, traditionally the on-deck batter should be guiding the runner where to slide, so colby could have helped to cue luddy in on the location of the throw and where to slide.

no, the throw was up the line & he had to reach back to grab it
he would have been safe if he went on the inside
Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars
yeah
can’t tell that from the still. But part of the problem may have been a bad angle around 3rd that put him too far in foul territory and eliminated the option of going to the inside completely. Luddy certainly looks like he was coming from an angle well into foul territory in the still.

Haha
That was my favorite show when I was a kid.
But the few times I’ve caught an episode as an adult it’s been truly terrible

You crazy?
That show will forever be awesome. Except for when they were little. Cory’s voice drives me bonkers.

Oh no.
But that was fine. I just meant after I finish watching the Nanny on YouTube I’ll watch Boy Meets World Seasons 4-7.

Awesome.
My friend downloaded that voice on her TomTom. She liked the idea of Mr. Feeny telling her where to go. We didn’t know at the time why he was an option. Them my mother explained. And I said I liked our way better.

I think I've pretty much hit all the "good" or great TV shows from recent years
so a lot of these shows are the right way to go. A-Team, Fall Guy, Gilligan’s, and anything kitschy. Also some cartoons. Thanks y’all.

i had to re-read the last overflow
it was excellent (the first 2/3). and shannon was never better.

i wrote it in response to him
about tony double-switching the pitcher into the cleanup. i wrote something like, “and on duncan’s forehead”

that's it all right.

Actually got up around 8:30 a.m. and followed it from the 12th. A couple of Thai friends came by and thought I was insane to get periodically rabid.
