Needs to learn to throw sinkers.
He will stay up then.
In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"
-George Carlin (RIP)

he’s working on the most difficult part of his game, and he’s not getting consistent play, he’s not making some of his D stick, and he’s getting unlucky at the plate. meanwhile his biggest competition can do no wrong.

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Well that was disappointing
I’m usually not much of a Tony basher but I have to agree that he really screwed this one up. WAY too many switches, etc. in a tie game so he ran out of position players, hung on to his last batter through not one, but two based loaded situations, runs out of pitchers, etc., etc.
Let’s hope Waino can keep the Mets batters looking as helpless as Jaime did today and our offense not only gets baserunner, but, you know, actual RUNS!
But when he did use his last batter in a bases loaded situation
Nothing came of it. So I guess I don’t really see your point there.
Weren't loaded
were they? wasn’t it just first and second? (however, only one out vs. two in other two cases)
I would have rather seen Waino bat, especially for Hawk.

I think the most impressive part of this game
was that the folks at Amazin Avenue did the whole thing without an overflow
Sorry but after this game
Both Tony and McGwire are in my doghouse. Tony for having Mather pitch a SECOND inning (just to name a few boneheaded moves he did) And as for McGwire I am NOT impressed with the hitters’ approach at all during this epic game except for Albert and Yadi. Ludwick and Shu stand out the most as being really bad tonight.
I guess Holliday was still sick but I can’t help but think this game would have been over with a LONG time ago if Tony didn’t switch him out of the game,

the baserunning blunders did suck, but i thought we were mostly talking about hitting.
the only person who did better at the plate than skip tonight was albert, partly because he got walked intentionally, being followed by a sick holliday and then pitchers.

It was a "logical" place for a double switch

Magnified
only because of the unusual circumstances of the game. Practically everyone on both sides had horrible at-bats at certain times of the game.
i think everybody had some bad at-bats tonight.
it’s frustrating to get 15 hits, 11 walks and one run. i think it’s as much bad luck and bad managing as bad player performance.

Yep
should of been someone else’s turn there. I can see TLR’s point of not letting Lohse or Penny pitch, though. It could, potentially, mess up the rotation since there’s no off day till next Thursday. One inning probably would be OK, but if whoever threw their bullpen today had already done so, I can see his point.

Nobody to blame.....
but the hitters in this game. I understand getting shut down by Santana, but we took some pretty crappy AB’s against some pretty mediocre relievers. Craig needs to be send down. Dude has hit the ball hard once this year. He looks completely over-matched right now. Mather looked better late in the game, but he has struggled mightily as well. Raz and Holliday…..both in 4-5 game slumps. Ryan isn’t hitting. Lopez would be my starting SS for awhile.
And hitless the couple of days before that
Cleanup spot tonight was 0 for 9. Of course, three of those outs were made by pitchers, but it makes it hard to win a game when the “protection” spot goes 0 fer.

Personally I think Tony kinda conceded the game in the 18th...
But the Mets suck so bad it still took them three innings against position player pitching to win it. JMO
We had ample opps to win, though.

I don't understand how people can be mad
Bad things happened, opportunities were missed, but there were also a slew of heroic performances by Cardinals players tonight. Hero of the Night goes to Yadier Molina, in my book.
I think it's because we did this before
and the outcome of that game didn’t greatly depend on the Cardinals making the wrong decisions. it was more on what players could manage on the field of play.

Agree...
This Game was one of the most heart fought games I have ever seen, even though I listened to it like I did when I was a kid. These cardinals are something else and this will be the turning point… Position players pitching and all the high fives and desire to win just set this game apart from anything else I can remember…
I stood where no man goes...
The pitching staff as a whole
17 innings, 6 H, 0 R
Give credit to the Mets bullpen for bending but not breaking — but the Cardinals pitching today barely even bent.
especially...not even

Game Recap
Player of the Game – hmmmm…. anybody remember Jaime Garcia going 7, allowing just one hit….. he also had a no-no through 5 (damn you Fox announcers)
Goat of the Game – Tony LaRussa…. whether you agree or not, he made some questionable moves….. here’s a couple
1. Let Motte bat with bases loaded in 12th
2. Let Hawksworth bat with bases loaded in 14th
3. hit and run with no one out and Albert up in 19th
4. Go with positions players to pitch instead of starters (this one i agree)
5. Other (there are at least 3 others)
Play of the Game – Kyle Lohse catching two fly balls….. seriously this is the equivalent of an ordinary person just trying out left field
honorable mention to Felipe Lopez’s pitching
Quote of the Night – TBD (this will take some time)
Stupid Play of the Game – Keeping Motte in to bat
two alternatives
1. put in Bryan Anderson….
2. put in Adam Wainwright/Kyle Lohse
instead he puts in a .212 career minor league hitter who hasn’t batted in 2 or 3 years….
Umpire Grading – D+ Wow you’d think the umpires would stop squezzing the pitchers in the 19th…. the outside strike was non-existent… he wouldn’t budge…..
A couple questionable calls at second as well (one for Mets, one for Cards – both out)
would be F, but the umpire mentioned to jaime that he could blow on the mound just like Johan…
will have Quote hopefully by tonight… open to suggestions…. stick to mccarver quotes tho

All I can say
Is, even though Larissa seemed to give up, the players didn’t. Boog diving into first, head hung when the ball got there first. Ujols gunning outthe runner at second. Craig with the diving catch. We’ve got players that care, and that’s why, after everything tonight, I’m still in a good mood.

With Garcia’s seven scoreless innings Saturday, Cardinals starting pitchers have now allowed just two earned runs in 36 innings in their last five games. The last time five straight Cardinal starting pitchers went at least seven innings and allowed two earned runs or less was August 6-10, 1993.

to try to explain the sport of baseball to a european: “no, this is not normal…we don’t normally do that…that either…no, he wasn’t supposed to do that…”

what the scoreboard is telling me
is that in 20 inning epic contests, you win by having more errors and less hits than the other team

a player can come up and be sent down immediately
but if I remember right there’s a time delay before the player who was sent down can be recalled.
Let me try to remember all the silly math
162 games
117 wins
5 starting pitchers get 32 starts each with 2 games left over (left over games called U for undecided)
The Cardinals win 4/5 of the games Carp pitches 24w-6l-2u (Carp goes 20-5)
The Cardinals win 4/5 of the games Waino pitches 24w-6l-2u (Waino goes 22-6)
The Cardinals win 4/5 of the games Penny pitches 24w-6l-2u (The Big Man goes 17-6)
The Cardinals win 2/3 of the games Lohse pitches 20w-10l-2u (Kyle goes 15-8)
The Cardinals win 2/3 of the games Garcia pitches 20w-10l-2u (Jaime goes 13-6)
That has the Cards winning 112 games. Out of the 12 undecided games, the cards go 5-7. All those are attributed to bullpen.
Starting rotation goes 87-31
Bullpen goes 30-14
Cards go 117-45 and become the “best” regular season team of all time
that's not simple math

The Nono is a bigger deal because A. my team won, in eighteen years we have never had a pitcher anywhere near this good he hit 98 against the final batter and B. OT: So I just read about the brawl that took place on CBS tonight that I missed
because I was watching a 6 hour baseball game.
Apparently, at the Strikeforce event tonight, Shields was talking to the commentator celebrating his win over one of his heroes. And Mayhem Miller, yes the douche from Bully Beatdown, jumps in the ring and asks for a rematch. One of Shields teammates takes offense to this and pushes Miller (I think it was Melendez). Then it turns into a brawl. The Diaz brothers, Nick and Nate, both jumped in to kick the shit out of Miller. It was on Primetime TV, all telecasted.
Does anyone know where I can see footage of this? I would love to see the real Bully Beatdown.
Bird is the word.
