this is the hazard of trying to sort out time zones late at night.

I don't mind seeing him bat there against a lefty

Because, for once, the guys who are getting moved above him in the batting order are not black holes.

Hey guys — we have no black holes in our offense this year! No Aaron Miles, no Adam Kennedy, no Joe Thurston.

Man, that’s so nice for a change.

though one could still argue boog is a black hole for the time being.

by stlcardinalsfang on Apr 17, 2010 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, because Santana is a FB/Change pitcher with a weak slider,

I think Colby (and schu) is more likely to do well against him.

Garcia isn't a good bet to get more than 2 ABs

so I guess Tony is thinking that L-L-L will be broken up by the time the LOOGYs start coming out of the bullpen

is tony really thinking about which side garcia bunts from?

he is crazy.

and the pitcher spot doesn’t matter

still not the biggest fan of skip getting to lead off against a lefty

but he told me to STFU on monday, so i guess i’ll just go with it. especially since there’s really no other options with boog sitting.

by stlcardinalsfang on Apr 17, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know if TLR is making the right decision for the wrong reason or what,

but I like Schu and Rasmus in against Santana instead of Perez, because the changeup santana throws so well is mostly a good pitch against right handed batters, while Perez’s slider is really hard on lefties.

i can understand that

i’m just saying i don’t like skip batting leadoff. i don’t really mind that he’s in there, but i think lopez would be a better option leading off today, as i think he’s more likely to get on base than skip is.

by stlcardinalsfang on Apr 17, 2010 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah.

Lopez is probably the superior lead off man in any case, but today especially.

warning SSS

lopez and boog both 0 for 7 against santana…skip at least has a couple hits

by TIII on Apr 17, 2010 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

for all we know freeze was destined to sit today in tony's original master plan

with lopex at third, but tony decided to keep it going for the rook. somebody had to sit, and lopex sorta had a good game, so…i doubt boog’s 0-7 was much of, if any, factor in tony’s mind (but he is crazy).

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

by cardball on Apr 17, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree that is very possible

and how was davids diving catch late last night? I was listening on radio so I didn’t get to see it. I was at the thursdays game sitting about 15 rows back on the third baseline and saw freese totally miss those two hits down the line as they went right under his glove…if that play last night was as good as it sounded i would give freese another start just on the hope his D is improving

by TIII on Apr 17, 2010 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

it was great, but there's also a little luck involved with those

maybe luck isn’t the right word, but as freeze said, he dove and got his mitt to where the ball was headed, and thankfully it went in.

facts is facts. Blues are sitting at home when hockey sends almost every team to the playoffs and Rams are sitting on the top draft pick, which means they were the worst team in football last year.

if you want to get technical

the Blues made the playoffs last year, didn’t this year… so that’s not really on the rise

and the Rams have went from 3 win, to 2 win, to 1 win….

but you can’t really decline from that

the Blues, i just don’t care

but the Rams should be great if they draft right in a few days

yes

if they fix their OL, get a QB, and get someone for that QB to throw to. Good luck with that.

being a 49ers fan i can see how you don't know about the Rams

but if you haven’t heard, the Rams oline is fine… its the rest of the team that needs work

Jason Smith, he's shows a lot of promise

you know, our 2nd overall pick last year…. and Richie Incognitio…. we are better off without him, he had issues

Jacob Bell is improving i hope and Mark Setterstorm is a solid start….. Jason Brown is an elite center… Barron is good enough

Just looked at the stats

We had 8 sacks against you in the season finale this year. Yeah, I’d say that O-line is solid.

you still don't have all the facts

our line was depleted by then not to mention we had QBs who had nobody to throw to so they held the ball

QB, #1 WR, TE, DT, DE, OLB.... that's it

so you think

you are going to get starters at six positions in one draft? Good luck with that. You realize you had top picks the last 2 years and went backwards, right? Did they get a new GM? (we don’t even have a GM right now)

I am genuinely concerned that Boog may be getting flashbacks to 08

That was one of the only downsides IMO when Lopez came in. There are not a lot of hot-button topics with Brendan, and injuries/playing time when he thought he’d have a shot at it after Eckstein … those pop up a lot in early interviews. prolonged slumps also get him off-kilter mentally.

I was hoping he’d turn it around during this series.

McCarver.

Jon Miller’s great. without Joe Morgan, anyway.

Miller is dragged down by the team.

He has to keep everything jolly and keep his mouth shut when Morgan says something he knows is stupid. He was much better as the Giants play-by-play guy.

well that is something

There is a world of difference between acknowledging the difference between parks and leagues, payrolls and disparity of resources and calling one league superior.
Yea the glorified T-Ball rule of the DH allows the AL a few more runs per team, but removes a lot of strategy that baseball was intended to have, without that strategy you have an incomplete product.

If for some reason you mistake having an Ortiz on the team without the tradeoff of his defense as superior I think most here would disagree

Belief that success is inevitable is as likely to hold you back as a belief that it is impossible.

That’s not exactly what I meant. I think the NL and AL have different lineups and stratagies. Penny is more suited to pitch to NL lineups than AL. The AL east is a tough divison, I don’t blame him for failing there.

Brad Penny’s ERA with Boston seems to have been inflated by bad luck.

As for Smoltz, the Sawks only saw fit to give him 8 starts before deeming him and his 3.67 K/BB a failure.

Tremendous argument.

Penny with the Red Sox:

5.61 ERA
4.49 FIP
4.68 xFIP
4.59 tERA

One of these is not like the others.

by mojowo11 on Apr 17, 2010 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think this guy is as bad as you're making him out to be

Most Red Sox fans have this idea that the AL East is like the majors and the rest of baseball is AAA. They see guys like Penny and Smoltz struggle and then rebound in the NL and they see it as affirming their beliefs.

The guy may not be trolling, he may just overestimate the difference between the NL and the AL (East).

by mojowo11 on Apr 17, 2010 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Thank you. It’s not just me, it’s most Red sox fans. I was Penny’s biggest defender in Boston. Then he goes to the NL and is lights out, and that made me wonder a little bit about the NL. I could be wrong, and probally am, and that’s why I’m here.

Something worth considering:

Penny with Red Sox:
5.61 ERA
4.49 FIP

Penny with Giants:
2.59 ERA
4.35 FIP

He was the same pitcher, he just had better results.

He seems to have improved this year, however, probably partially because he seems to have embraced the two-seam fastball. Also, it’s not hard to imagine that he could be dominant, considering how good he was before his injury with the Dodgers.

In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

Must have borrowed a little too much of Duncan's pixie dust today.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"
