home opener overflow - game 7
if you're bunting a guy from second to third, shouldn't the bunt go down the 1st base line? meh.
cards are having a great game against a good pitcher. enjoy.

I think the Cards get the choice.
In football, the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his recievers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! "I hope I'll be safe at home!"

this is true
I’d like to see him try for the shutout but I also don’t think he needs to be way over the century mark in pitches this early in the year
Because I like complete games.
And I like Wainwright. Like plus like equals awesome. And the fans will love it.
That’s my reasons. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter though.

Why risk sending people into space?
Why risk trying the 10-alarm hot sauce at Buffalo Wild Wings?
Because we are human and we’ve conquested the world through sheer risk-taking and brass-balling and these small conquests like early season CGSHOs keep us attuned to that important and admirable trait.
In short, try for the CGer because you damn well can.

I hope you aren't offended, vt...
I’m just saying it’d be cool to see them go for the CG. A win is a win, I know, but a team can rally behind those ‘personal’ glories. I used apostrophes there because, despite Wainwright getting the CG in his statbook, everybody on the field and off knows it’d be a team success and celebrate it as one.
Again, whatever…Motte did well and Wainwright didn’t risk his arm exploding. A win’s a win, right? Next time I’ll just leave it at ‘CG for Waino?’
I once shot a man just to see him die...then I got distracted and missed it.

It's a weird pitch. No one thinks he knows what will happen when it leaves his hand.

Motte may be better when he throws less hard
Seems to me that he gets the ball up more when he fires it in there. He can throw low fastballs if he takes a little off ’em.

But when it comes to this team hitting lefties, I’ll believe it when I see it. That said, I think they have more hits against lefties this year, than all of last.

Misspelling words in order to re-post and correct yourselves is funny?
Okay then.
You can read it in any tone you like.
one of my favorites
i have to give others the credit though, since i didn’t actually do it, else it get old. but those few comments where it was done were funny, all five or six of them (my numbers can be corrected at no offense to myself)
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
figure out the eye dominance thing yet?
"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum
i'll work on it
maybe i’ll do a post on it – i was with the hitting coach of u of miami is where it began, and how he was opening guys stances or not depending on eye dominance, a la luddy. we spent about a week together in the cages (i throw) and he gave me a lot of lit on it, but those pages are in chicago and i need to figure out where it came from.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."

"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum
who's in your league?
anybody i’ve heard of?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
nope
its a slow pitch softball league! Right handed, right eye dominant, I’ve got a mean 12 foot arc!
sorry, who do you throw for?
"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum
haha
actually that eye-dominance would be a benefit in slow-pitch, i’d think – don’t you face the plate the whole time?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
why?
how far do you pitch from?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
45 ft
with ball off bat speeds of max 97mph. I backpedal, a lot. I mean, like I can be the pivot man on a double play sometimes

Its not that big of a deal if you are confident in your reaction time, which I am. I dont see why old men pitch though, their reaction times are too slow.
Size isn’t everything in softball either. I’d put my buddy who is the exact same size as me (6’ ~170) up against anyone. Freakin sweet swing.

OT: Lookin' for a name for my next softball bat.
Had a 10-year old single-wall aluminum bat (Read: Piece of junk) that I’m finally retiring. I called her the “Dinger Bringer.” Gonna get either a DeMarini Juggernaut or a DeMarini “The One” (both once’s a -6, one’s a -4). Swung a friend’s DeMarini J2 all last year and lookin to invest in one.
Current favorite in naming is “Sally”

honestly, that's a marginal difference
beckett k’s more, and porcello doesn’t, but i feel like the difference is slight esp. given porcello’s upward projectability and beckett’s downward trend(see opening day). however, soto + mclouth for mccann should nullify the deal straight up. mccann is the 2nd best catcher for fantasy, 25 hr talent and such.

i think ur underrating soto
as much as i hate him, if he becomes an average starting catcher, i think i win this tradde easily
and porcello is supposed to decline because he was lucky last year

okay, so what if soto becomes an average catcher, you're trading
brian mccann, who if not for mauer’s explosion last year, could make a legit claim to being the number 1 catcher. You have to assume that Beckett does not regress at all and for some reason a 20 year old pitcher will DECLINE. But hey, it’s your team.

no no sabermetrics say he was lucky last year
which means if he progresses, he’ll just repeat his season
and beckett will get his wins and k’s
my SP sucks btw not sure if that changes ur mind at all
and i disagree with mccann as claim to #1 catcher…. joe mauer had it thru and thru
but i see ur point…..

yes. catchers are extremely valuable
it’s incredibly hard to find a catcher who produces like an outfielder, is a switch hitter, and is mostly durable(as long as his eyes aren’t blurry). sure, beckett is slightly (and i think you’re underrating porcello’s potential) better than RP, but McCann > Soto+McClouth(honestly, waste of space) and it’s not even close or fair.

that slider
doesn’t seem move side to side very much….I wonder if it’s more like a misclassified sinker or something….
i thought he looked good
he was down in the zone w/ his fastball. he only threw one real hard – it hit 95 on the gun – others were sitting low 90s. threw a coupla good sliders.
good to hear that he can reach back and throw some heat still

i was impressed. it was like bizarro motte. nothing was very hard and everything had good movement on it. the sinker has some nice break toward RHers and that little cutter thing is pretty tight and sharp
best of all, he was locating well. much better than he can locate hus fastball

I hope both turn out well but needless to say I have the wrong one at the moment. Also, Al called Colby smooth?! And as shown above my last name that everyone thinks is my first name is Painter, so A.D.A.M.=me?

What do you guys think of Jay Bruce for fantasy purposes?
He’s got the pedigree, but he only hit around .220 last year, albeit w/ a terrible BABIP. His LD% was also down and he hit a lot more flyballs than his career norm. To add insult to injury, he started out like 0-19 this year. You think he’ll turn it around?
I have him on my team
I needed OF power and he’s been disappointing to say the least. I think he does rebound, but I am pessimistic. I’m just glad at this point I drafted Nelson Cruz and Colby.

Absolutely, if he's cheap or a FA it's a good 4th of pickup
But don’t overvalue him or start him immediately.
OT: wasn’t he 10 times as hyped as weiters and heyward? And pujols was the sequel to ben grieve who couldn’t turn on a fastball and needed to be traded when his stock was high. Good scouting FESPN

He had hype, but Heyward-Wieters hype is the top of the top
Bruce mashed right out the gate when he got called up, too, before cooling off considerably. He was dropped by someone, and I wouldn’t need to start him right away by any means. I’m probably going to get him and hope he breaks out. He was hitting the ball hard tonight, and the announcers were raving about how unlucky he’s been thus far.
wait he was DROPPED!!!.. snag him that's a bargain

somebody was doing some home run pick game couple weeks ago and could write in a wild card – i suggested him, but not sure what he’s currently doing. you could check it out though. sorta know the dude and what he’s made of, so i might be biased, but i don’t see him letting an opportunity slip by once he finally got one.

by Cards Fan in Chitown on Apr 12, 2010 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions
that's unfair comparison, you only say that because they're or were both reds
Bruce is a much better fielder than dunn( i know fantasy), bruce also had a 10% walk rate which isn’t pedestrian.
i'd have to look at the numbers
but he’s likely been as good as colby, may be younger, and was more a can’t-miss – and we all think colby is gonna be good, right?
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
so i'd say he looks good
can’t fault a guy for breaking his wrist diving for a ball in the outfield – thus far colby has been much more injury prone
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Well Bruce has more pop and a better arm, has had his stats ripped by bad luck
And was supposed to be more “can’t miss”, but Colby is faster, has a better batters eye in spite of last year and is a better fielder. Im not saying that despite different attributes Colby wouldn’t be a good over/under for Bruce. Im just saying he, unlike Colby, was tauted as a no-doubt, franchise saving franchise player who could almost single handedly turn the reds into a winner. Even if he turns out good I don’t even think he’ll be a face of the franchise player and was way overhyped. Also on the Colby front even if he’s older he’s also blossoming more quickly, bruce’s slow start has been all injuries/adjusting to the NL. Colby has had to mix those with listening to Hal McRae and is already getting over it.

That’s my point. Bruce will be good, that’s why I stated immediately that he should absolutely be picked up in the fantasy league, but not Matt Kemp/Justin Upton good. It’s just that he was WAY overhyped.

how dare you try and end this conversation so short, I was enjoying it.
what I’m saying is that
Bruce’s hype=heyward’s
Bruce can very well have a breakout season when you compare the down year of a similar prospect with injuries(j. upton)
Bruce’s bad year was due to bad luck, that’s my reasoning.
heyward has more hype than bruce did

fantasy advice nite on VEB
I’m in a bit of a pickle here Dick. I’ve got the top waiver spot and this is what I’m looking at: There’s a trade going through tonight that results in a drop of Rick Porcello. Also, Rollins got hurt tonight. Someone dropped Howie Kendrick a couple of days ago. Ive got Zobrist and could slide him over to short and plug in Kendrick for however long and then use Zobrist’s flexibility to fill in at both and occasionally start in the OF. Top it all off, some * went and dropped Rajai Davis today. My OF is probably my weakest offensive area and with Rollins out, SB’s are going to be hard to come by for me.
League is a head to head 5X5 league so no need to worry about innings caps.
With all of that said, here is my roster:
Wieters c
Howard 1b
Zobrist 2b
Rollins ss
Longo 3rd
Lind OF
Ludwick OF
Rasmus OF
Garret Jones Util
Stubbs BN
Berkman BN
Waino SP
Josh Johnson SP
Wilson RP
Nuñez RP
Aardsma P
Jenks P
Sanchez BN
Price BN
Webb BN
Bedard DL
"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum
reports are currently saying May
I was considering dropping Webb before Bedard because Bedard is currently throwing 60 pitches off a mound and webb isn’t even throwing 60 feet. If I had it to do over I would not have drafted 3 injured players but they were such good values and its head to head league, so August is when I need them to be their best. That still doesn’t address which of the 3 I should pick up considering what is available.
"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum
i'd prefer rajai over kendrick

Kendrick had a great second half last year, he can be a 15-15 guy.

honestly, i think there’s a marginal difference between them, if you want a 2ber, go for it, there’s less positional depth there making him a more valuable trade commodity(maybe later on down the season)

"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum
I think
I’m leaning toward punting on steals and picking up porcello while dropping either bedard or webb. Maybe Kendrick slides through off of waivers, but I doubt it with the number of high profile 2baggers who are injured right now. Neither of those 2 are going to give much power. I’d agree with Cody though, a little more coming from Kendrick.

i upped the weight by 5lb on Wed, that’s when this started. and we are, but that’s where it’s warm & my bicep was a little sore but it’s fine now.

Are you using free weights or machines?
If you can get to a cable machine, do triceps pushdowns. If you’re using free weights, you can do triceps kickbacks or overhead triceps extensions with dumbbells.
You can read it in any tone you like.
WTF? GDM!!!
Curls are like the most useless exercise ever. Do some military press, lat pulls and the like. That’s way too many reps to be doing of any one exercise. You should only be weight training 2-3 times a week anyway. Your muscle tissue needs time to repair after break down. You have probably strained a biceps or brachialis muscle. Just don’t do anything strenuous with it for about a week. Give it time to heal. No heat on it. Ice it about 5-7 times a day for no more than 10 minutes each time and no closer than every hour. Take some ibuprofen if you can to decrease inflammation. Make sure that you arent on any meds that have adverse reactions to ibuprofen (like blood thinners).
/you have no idea how BFE I am right now. I’m staying with a family in a “modular home” down a gravel road that dead ends in a lake. I love it! (the lake part, none of the rest)
"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum
i'm really not smrt enough know know this, i just wanted big arms
i’m not on any drugs so i’ll take advil & a week off. i was doing bench presses at 150lbs & that’s when i felt my elbow started hurting btw
i grew up in a trailer on a gravel road so i’m well versed in Mizzou BFE livin. at least you have a lake, all we had were snake filled ponds

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
Snake filled ponds FTW!
Big arms arent really all that functional, no matter what the girls like. But, I could give you some better suggestions for an exercise program to get you whipped into shape if you’d like. Take that week off, do some light elbow flexion exercises (curls with like 5 pound weights a couple sets of 10) and see if your pain is reproduced. For the time being, make sure that you use your arm normally, just limit it to pain free motions. If it hurts when you do something, don’t do it.
Never mind what these clowns are saying about tearing a ligament. The motions you were performing wouldn’t over stress any ligamentous structures.
"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum

In case anyone wondered….he’s .300/.397.446/.842 for his career, but only 100 homers….funny, I remembered him as a good hitter, but as more of a slugger than a contact guy.

I was at the game today. 50 degrees warmer than last year’s opener. Adam looked to be in total control the whole game. I decided to check out the pitch f/x data from today’s start over at brooksbaseball.net and two graphs over there struck me as enlightening about what makes Adam so effective:

I cannot imagine how difficult it would be for a hitter when the ball keeps coming out of the same spot but never at the same speed.

Do you guys know that Tommy Hanson was most simliar to Javy Vazquez, Joba and Greinke in terms of his pitch location last year?
I broke down 2009 pitch f/x into 6 different pitch types
FF + FA = fastball, FT + SI = sinker, CH + FS = changeup, SL + FC = slider, CU = curveball, KN = knuckleball.
I then broke down the strike zone into 6 zones , and measured the number of each pitch type in each of the zones divided by total pitches. So, 4.24% of Hanson’s pitches last year were sliders in the low outside part of the strike zone, 26% were fastballs outside of the strike zone and so on.
I did that for all pitchers and compared the absolute difference of each pitch type % in each zone to that of Hanson. Joba had an absolute difference of 9.2%, Wakefeild was at 109%.
The next step is to include stuff and release points; however, those are in different units than the location numbers so I probably need to convert everything to standard deviations above average… unless you have any ideas?
by vivaelpujols on Apr 13, 2010 1:26 AM EDT up reply actions
Of course if you broke it up by batter hand and used more detailed zones this would be better

maybe it’s just another chapter in the incredibly long, strange saga of Rick Ankiel…..or maybe he really did hurt himself running into the wall last year, and it took the offseason to actually get healthy. Tough to say….not like there’s a precedent for Cardinals playing hurt for extended periods and coincidentally sucking during those periods….

it was momentous and all. not everyone was amused, but i was.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
ahhh that probably has restricted tv access as well

"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
is that why everyone frets about mlb.tv?

it's a great deal if you are out of st lou
like a 100 bucks for every major league game, except your market, which for me is texas. and the fox sat. game is a blackout.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
so if u watch most games, u'll get less than $1 per game
not bad at all

well, cincy and chicago are in fact blacked out in india
mlb.tv has incomprehensible rules.
"Some days I feel like the hypotenuse in a love triangle; others as if my lucky number is pi."
yeh i don't mess with that mostly because i don't need to
all 162 games are on television for me…. i pity those who aren’t same way

reading the astros site game one post was illuminating
as i hadn’t read over there before. the main poster i think has some fact-checking to do, but as always the comments are entertaining. this was my favorite of many (out of a total of about 110 for this game thread):
“The ballpark looks smaller when Pujols steps to the plate”

that there would make a nice sig
